The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“If Beto O’Rourke wants to go and run for president, God bless him, he should put his hat in and make his case. But, he lost. You don’t usually promote a loser to the top of party and then take a winner and say, ‘We’re going to take your knees off.’” Rahm Emanuel

Quote II

"What I find uncomfortable is coming home to find out that six people I barely know went into my bedroom without permission and went through every single one of my drawers, without any regard to my privacy whatsoever," Pirnie said. "My landlord's e-mail, though carefully crafted, showed tremendous prejudice against my right to legally have firearms." Leyla Pirnie

Quote III

“It is advantageous to have many women on board. It will be a natural thing and a completely different environment, which I look at as positive,” Lieutenant Iselin Emilie Jakobsen Ophus

Quote IV

"Building buildings in Moscow, using stolen material from Assange. These are not crimes. He has no authority to be a roving commissioner to find political sins. So far, I don’t see any evidence of crimes except for ones that he helped to facilitate by getting people to lie in front of his own investigators." Alan Dershowitz

Why isn't this bitch congress critter in handcuffs?

Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (Wash.) joined the migrant caravan on Saturday in their attempt to cross the border, condemning President Donald Trump for "creating the crisis." She said she was able to help five asylum seekers gain access to the United States.

"I was able to successfully assist 5 asylum seekers – 2 unaccompanied minors, a mother and her 9 year old child, and a young man with a serious medical condition – into the United States," she wrote in a tweet.

I don't know about you but I'm sick and fvcking tired of the double sets of laws that this country has.

Remember when President Trump was alleged to have said, "certain countries were 'Shit Holes'?

Perhaps using the term 'Shit Hole' is not presidential. But, even the Democrat's flavor of the month thinks that Central Americans fleeing to this country come from 'Shit Holes'.

"It should tell us something about [a refugee's] home country" [with its] "underlying conditions that are causing them to flee in the first place"; "People are desperate" to get out of the "violent countries where they fear for their lives"…

Sounds like a 'Shit Hole' to me.

She hasn't even been inaugurated sworn in yet and Ocasio-Cortez's ego is right at home in Washington, D.C.

Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Friday compared her 2018 election victory to American accomplishments such as the moon landing and the establishment of civil rights.

During a press conference meant to publicize her support of a Green New Deal, a nebulous government spending plan promoting ideas backed by lawmakers like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), Ocasio-Cortez equated Democratic elections victories like her own with other seemingly "impossible" U.S. achievements.

For the time being, Driving drunk with auto pilot on is not working.

DUI On Autopilot
At approximately 3:37 am, an officer pulled up to a stationary Tesla Model S with sirens blaring on Highway 101 in Palo Alto, California. After chasing the car for seven long minutes at 70 mph (the Tesla was driving just over the speed limit) the officer finally managed to get a peek at the driver.

But the driver was completely “unresponsive,” according to the Los Altos Town Crier.

Florida has not seen the last of Brenda Snipes. Instead of walking off into the sunset with a kick ass pension, she has rescinded her resignation.

Snipes now says she’s rescinding her resignation and will fight the suspension. The Sun-Sentinel reports:

Broward Supervisor of Elections Dr. Brenda Snipes announced Saturday she will fight her suspension by the governor, and rescinded her letter of resignation that preceded it.

Gov. Rick Scott suspended Snipes late Friday afternoon, citing mistakes her office made in recent elections.

The elections office attorney, Burnadette Norris Weeks, said the governor is holding her to a different standard than other elections offices in Florida, “as if there can never be a mistake made.”

In a room filled with black pastors, elected officials, community leaders and her fellow “Deltas” sorority sisters in their trademark red clothing, Snipes thanked her supporters.

Youth smoking has plummeted with advent of e-cigarettes.

One argument against vaping is that it might be a gateway drug for smoking by getting youngsters hooked on nicotine and used to the physical actions associated with smoking. The argument strikes me as implausible. Vaping might well hook people on e-cigarettes, but it seems like a stretch to argue that it will hook them on the thing they took up vaping, at least in part, to avoid.

Now comes a study showing that the advent of vaping is associated with a remarkable decline in smoking among young people. The study is by David Levy, a professor with the Georgetown University Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, D.C.

Vaping bad, bad, bad. Legalization of marijuana, good, good, good or so it seems.

Not sure what was going through the mind of Detective Specialist Raymond Williams.

The New York City Police Department has suspended a detective after learning he recorded a 32-second video of his testicles on a body cam in what appears to have been a horribly ill-advised prank, the New York Daily News reported on Saturday.

According to the Daily News, law enforcement sources and internal police documents said Detective Specialist Raymond Williams of the 79th Precinct was suspended Thursday after the video was inadvertently discovered by a female staffer at the city’s Legal Bureau during a review of recordings. Williams worked as a neighborhood coordination officer (NCO), which the NYPD wrote on its website are liaisons between community members and the police.

The Daily News wrote the hairy situation also involves another NCO:

Gutless bastards desecrate a vet's flag. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Earlier this week, "Fox & Friends" reported on a Vermont veteran who says that a vandal removed his "Trump 2020" flag from its flagpole, burned it and left it on his front porch.

Gus Klein, who served two deployments in Afghanistan, said he isn't sure if the flag was burned while laying on his porch, but that the alleged vandalism was "not right."

"There is fear in my mind," he said. "We should be able to sleep at night in our own property, so there is fear."

Despite that, Klein said that the incident won't stop him from campaigning for President Trump.

Luckily for Klein, he's getting a replacement flag, courtesy of the president's son.

11 I am become willow, Destroyer of Threads.

I saw the movie Mile 22 today. Lots of gubs. And grenades. They LOVE them some grenades.

A few things about it - one of the writers mighta been a moron. John Malkovich (with a flattop toupe that would look totally real if you didn't know he was bald) quotes the AoSHQ header. I know, Mencken is kind of a well known guy, but it was a bit out of place with the action at the time.

Ronda Rousey is in the movie, but she is wasted as a talent and a character. Some other chick kinda plays who Rousey should play. But kinda not.

59 Westchester Barbie came out with another great Tweet today:

Also, pretty sure one Dante's Circles of Hell includes scrolling through a mirror-hall of agonizingly similar healthcare plans like "UHG Choice Master HMO 1800" vs "RedGo Option Plus EPO 2000."

Uh, yeah. Obamacare requires that all plans be one of three types, "bronze", "silver", and "gold", with almost no deviations from the template allowed. The plans look identical, because the government requires that the plans look identical.

Insurance companies aren't allowed to be innovative: for example, having a catastrophic plan where you pay all your medical expenses under $10,000 a year, and the plan covers anything over that. I'd be happy to pay for my own damn checkups and lab tests, in exchange for a healthy reduction in premiums.

Or an insurance plan where chiropractic, acupuncture, "sexual reassignment" surgery, and a bunch of other things that I'll never use aren't covered.

Westchester Evita's solution to "agonizingly similar healthcare plans" is, of course, to force everyone into one health plan - the mandated government health plan.

110 The Portland Timbers soccer team is going to the US soccer championships in Atlanta.

The Timbers fans are screaming that only 1300 tickets are allocated for them in Atlanta.

Timbers fans tend to be young, and left-wing, even for Portland. I'm sure that 95% of them believe that global warming is an existential crisis, the biggest challenge ever to face humanity, and that Miami is going to be under water in ten years (some of them truly believe this). They think that we need to ban cars, and need to force everyone to live near a mass transit line in order to Save The Planet.

This doesn't stop them from getting into a carbon-spewing jet aircraft, and flying to and from across the country to go to a soccer game, of course, because That's Different.

Flying from Portland to Atlanta and back emits 1200 lbs of CO2, according to my trusty carbon footprint calculator, so for 1300 people, that is 780 tons of CO2 emitted. You could drive a standard car 2400 miles for 1200 lbs of CO2.

Remarkably, Timbers fans don't want to hear this - their defense appears to be that the airlines will fly in any case, so the fact that they are flying to Atlanta and back doesn't actually increase carbon emissions.

Of course, you can apply this logic to any commercial air travel - so you can now fly to Europe on vacation guilt-free, since the plane was flying to Europe anyway.

Well, dashboard lights used to be a subsystem of the headlight switch, but these days, more and more seem to be driven by the engine management computer, or maybe the body control module.

Failure to crank could be a bad battery, or loose battery cable, especially that going to the starter. Another thing to look at is bad ignition switch, or neutral safety switch.

Many cars now have a "crank relay" in the fuse box, and many of those relays have their wiring diagram embossed into the case.Remove the relay, identify the two pins that are the relay contacts (as opposed to the relay coil), and jump those two holes in the socket with a piece of wire. If the engine cranks, the problem is upstream of the relay, or rarely, the relay itself.

If the engine doesn't crank, look to the heavy battery cable leading from the battery (+) post to the starter, or to the starter itself.

The above all assuming the battery puts out OK.

Weird that Florida oceanfront real estate prices haven't collapsed.

Some environmentalists have noted that continued high real estate prices makes their "Miami will soon be underwater theory" look bad - so they have concocted an explanation that rich people owning waterfront property know that the government will bail them out, so they feel no pressure to sell their soon-to-be-underwater properties.

I've had that towing insurance. Once had a car quit on my way home from IL to GA. It would have caost me about $200 each way by cab to get it done locally and go back and get it. Insurance covered the tow.

172 Failure to crank could be a bad battery, or loose battery cable, especially that going to the starter. Another thing to look at is bad ignition switch, or neutral safety switch.

Starts, then no dashboard lights, then won't restart.

Sounds like a fuse blown. The fuse blew out just after the engine started - may have been the load from that or a short that happened once started.

Root around under the dash looking for a thicker red wire and see if it has power. Pull down from the intraweb a service manual for your car and start your search at the power feed to the dash lights and ignition switch relay.

2. the word "orange" first appeared in the 1300's in reference to the fruit (from the persian "naranj") and it wasn't until the 1500's that it referred to the color. but what was the color called before that?

Baking is more science than art as opposed to cooking in general which is more art than science. Baking also requires one to have special tools, like Crisco shortening, measuring spoons, an electric mixer (either stand or hand-held), along with various sizes and types of baking pans (sheet pans, 9 x13 pans, spring-form pans, glass or metal pie plates/pans), cooling racks, a rolling pin, an oven with reliable temperature settings, etc. Needing those things disqualifies most people from baking because beer, cigarettes and crack cocaine take precedence when it comes to spending one's entertainment/welfare dollars. Besides, most people can't boil an egg at home these days. Easier to go to a bakery and bitch about the taste or the price of the goods sold. That's the American Way.

Speaking Saturday night at the 19,000-seat Barclays Center in Brooklyn as part of her promotional book tour, former first lady Michelle Obama shocked attendees by comparing a prominent piece of feminist self-help advice to "shit" that often "doesn't work."

Obama told the sold-out crowd that women can't experience equality in both their professional and personal lives "at the same time," calling the idea a "lie" and arguing that "marriage still ain't equal, y'all."

Then, in an unguarded moment that sent the crowd and social media ablaze, she added: "And it's not always enough to lean in, because that shit doesn't work all the time."

Obama, seemingly flustered, quickly remarked, "I forgot where I was for a moment" as attendees laughed and applauded.

"I thought we were at home, y'all," she added. "I was gettin' real comfortable up in here. Alright, I'm back now. Sometimes that stuff doesn't work."

330 I'm an idiot, wife couldn't pick me up so I called a cab. $30 + $3 tip. When I got home irealied I have towing insurance and could have gotten it towed and got home for free. If you don't have it on your auto insurance it's cheap, well worth it.

I had a friend who had a small kitchen fire. Mostly just smoke damage (and second degree burns on his hand). Most of the smoke damage was to the ugly acoustic tile ceiling, and the ugly fluorescent light fixtures on the ceiling.

No big deal, friend and his wife were planning on remodeling the kitchen anyway, this just forced them to get off their butts and actually do it. Of course, this meant remodeling the adjacent hallway, master bedroom, and master bathroom as well. Removing/moving walls, completely reconfiguring how the three rooms interfaced, all new electrical, new floors, drywall, etc., etc...

Friend did all the work himself, except he hired a contractor for taping & mudding. Forgot how long it took... months.

So a couple of years later friend & wife are at a company Christmas dinner, chatting with colleagues & their wives. Somehow the story of the kitchen fire gets told. Colleague's wife says, "But at least you got a new kitchen from the insurance settlement, right?"

Friend looks at wife. Wife looks at friend...

"Doh!"

The "friend", who shall remain anonymous, is by far a bigger idiot than you...

379 The festivities in Paris are just the tipping point of something apparently building for a while, it's not all about idiotic "climate" extortion and rent-seeking, and the violence is mostly the handiwork of some usual suspects - apparently.

There have been peaceful demos against the carbon tax for a while, apparently. Only the addition of usual suspect "anarchist" nutcase criminals resulted in the rather more colorful and kinetic phase we all enjoyed this weekend.

And apparently Paris has been at war with, for lack of a better term, "automotive freedom" for some time, with lowered rural speed limits, and predatory traffic cams (hmm, sounds familiar) to enforce increasingly stupid and freedom-limiting rules on drivers. The carbon taxes are the last straw, for at least part of the populace.

So - same/same, "climate" nonsense mostly to blame, but more going on than just that.

Apparently.

I meant that the fact that the Clintons could have any public tour at all, much less one in GHWB's sorta hometown, during his funeral week, was (another) devastating indictment of a collapsed civic culture. Even if it's mostly empty, and tickets are $8.

On a brighter note, we got some rain, finally, and the pesto made from the last basil of the season right before the trip was pretty good with the grilled chicken.

393 No, they weren't "successful" in any meaningful way, and they showed no savvy en route to their lack of success. And "America first" is even more meaningless in this context than usual. They got elected and re-elected. Thus ends their tales of "success". And if one finds "savvy" in any of those four events, one needs to either cut back the recreational drugs or become more familiar with recent history.

398 I baked a pie this afternoon. I took the refrigerated dough out of the fridge and let it warm up a little while the oven preheated. I then unrolled the first layer, tucking it nicely into the pie tin. The Exec opened the jar of NoneSuch and I poured it into the pie shell. Then I carefully unrolled the second pie crust, placed it over the first and the filling, then fluted the edges. The Exec was really impressed that I cut a six pointed star in the center because he would have just scored the top two or three times to let the steam out. I have now fulfilled my every three years or so baking requirement.

He got nothing stupid that he wanted (even against a fairly pathetic GOP), he got regularly rolled and humiliated at home and of course abroad (non-stop), was idiotic enough to get impeached (by the GOP!), and only survived because of the essential cowardice and emptiness of that same GOP. If he hadn't happened to come along when a generational technological/economic boom was occurring, he would have been a 2nd Carter (who actually had a few decent domestic accomplishments), one and done.

His ability to get away with crimes and criminal levels of malfeasance, with body counts, says nothing about him and everything about the country.

That electorate was at least partially degraded by Clinton's political skills.

And I don't think his lack of achievements means much. When you're president and the other party controls the House, you don't get much of what you want. Trump won't get anything from a Democratic Congress unless he's promoting something they want.

Beyond that, I don't think Bill Clinton cared one little bit about policy beyond its effect on his political prospects. The wife is the one who actually wants to make changes.

447 Yes, this is me in the prayer chain.

I am writing to ask for your help. To be clear, I asked for and received help already. I wanted all to know that. Circumstances are such that I find myself needing ask another time.

https://www.gofundme.com/help-with-time-to-find-employment

The campaign tells the story, but this is my situation:

I am partially handicapped, with limited mobility and only 25% use of my strong right arm. Up until June, I was still able to drive for Uber, and did so for over a year. I was deactivated as a driver at that time.

My only family is a brother who I was helping financially while working. My "friends", I found, consisted of those from a marriage of 17 years which ended three years ago. I have been turned down for welfare benefits because, as reported, I made too much money this year to qualify. I applied for SSDI in July, and am awaiting their first denial, as I'm told this is their standard practice.

While working, I had built up a small reserve of money, one that was used up recently to pay an oral surgeon to treat a badly abscessed tooth.

I have been everywhere in applying for jobs, and in the past 4.5 months have only gotten 3 days of good freelance work, and 5 days of temp work. I will find something, as failure is not an option. In the meantime, I am looking at homelessness next week. This is the reason for my request. Anything you could do would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for listening, and I have put my email in my nic if anyone would like to contact me off of the board. I will post this once only per thread for today and tomorrow. Be well.

449 Time for the old folk.

Be thankful that you are blessed to live in what is still the most exceptional
country on the planet.

Each of us must continue or begin the task of restoring the place to it's former glory--by becoming involved in your community. Attending school board meetings, working the elections (phone calling, signage, door to door etc) writing your rep with your concerns--being an INVOLVED citizen.

I do all this stuff, sometimes it's a real pain--but overtime it does have an effect.

This is YOUR obligation for living here, to ensure that the country endures.

So in the midst of all this remember we are Americans, so that head is held HIGH and PROUD.
That's how you recognize an extraordinary person in an exceptional country.

Goodnite, good people. Be safe and sleep well.

It would be funny if it wasn't so pitiful. The dude drops out when clinton seemed like he was doing good. Soon as it looked like bush was doing good he jumps back in and fucks it up. Perot was a scam, and it was so obvious.

That was and still is one of my tinfoil hat moments, what did Bush do to piss off the deep state...

Didn't Perot and Bush have a history? I thought I read somewhere there was bad blood between them prior to Perot's entrance into the race.

What I'm gonna do is leave this machine as is, which is currently my best, and upgrade the other one, so as not to have to tear this one down. And when I get it going like I want, I can then just swap which one I use most of the time.

Ram slots are motherboard things, not CPU. And when you get a motherboard you have to commit to a certain CPU slot for it, thinking more about upgrading your CPU in the future than RAM, since even the cheapest motherboards have room for decent amounts of RAM (and fast RAM) these days.

I'm busy looking at various mobos and trying to get up to speed on the latest.

Something intriguing is these "M2" slots for SSD crap. There's a bunch of stuff, and I see you can set something up to sort of cache a hard drive with the SSD cards. Sort of like a RAID array, but the idea is to use the SSD for the frequently accessed stuff.

It appears to the OS as a single drive. I'm looking at that.

I'm going to go with the 8th gen Intel, probably a 6-core. I'll probably start with 16GB RAM, then add.

But this SSD thing is intriguing me and I'm reading about that.

I last upgraded my whole system a couple of years ago. Things have changed a ton since then - mostly CPUs growing exponentially in # of cores. I stick with AMD because Intel is just too pricey for the performance.

One thing that bugs me is that memory has been sky high for a while. Ridiculously expensive. ANd not just for the hot shit stuff but even for the pedestrian RAM.

I've seen that M2 stuff. Personally, I would rather have huge RAM disks than SSDs (even though they lose everything with the power off) ... but, as I said, the RAM prices have been insane and I'm not sure people make those types of boards - separate PCI RAM drives rather than just board RAM - though I'm sure somebody has to be interested in that sort of thing.

Anyway, I'm probably not going to be upgrading anything again for a little bit. The last CPUs I looked at were the AMD ThreadRipper line. Crazy stuff. Not too expensive, either.

Her husband took her to the ER yesterday because her right side went numb. Her face is paralyzed and she cannot see well. She is very shaky and can't see out of one eye. They are checking for stroke, TIA and Bell's Palsy, and also a lupus flare which may be the underlying cause.

She asked me to let you all know and to please pray for her that goodness and mercy may follow her all the days of her life.

Please pray for her complete healing and for peace and comfort for her, and also for the Rev and her family. This dear lady who is so much a part of our "family" here has prayed for all of us and now needs us to do the same for her.

Please pray in any way you see fit. I invite my fellow Catholics (and anyone else, for that matter!) to join me in praying Mother Teresa's emergency novena, which is to recite the Memorare Prayer nine times in a row:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

I will send this prayer request to Fenelon and also post it whenever I can today. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything else from her.

Thank you!
