So there. ITHACA, NY—A study released Monday by animal behaviorists at Cornell University found that dogs that twitch, move their paws repeatedly, or growl in their sleep are, in fact, dreaming vividly about tearing their owners limb from limb. “After thousands of hours of observation, we are forced to conclude that any dog witnessed making even the slightest of movements in its sleep is living out a cathartic vision of absolutely mauling their owners,” said lead researcher Dr. Hana Michaels, adding that any dog, regardless of breed, size, gender, or degree of training, was visualizing the act of devouring its master if observed fidgeting even the slightest bit while sleeping. “Many dogs will suddenly jerk their bodies as if they’ve been startled in their sleep; in fact, they’re seeing themselves pawing your face off, sinking their teeth into your neck, and feeling the hot gush of your life’s blood against the backs of their throats. It seems the faster they churn their little legs while curled up on their beds or favorite spots on the couch, the more intent they are about chewing off all your extremities and rooting around in your chest cavity. Hi everyone.
I want to super mega ultra apologize for my latest outburst. I understand that I upset a number of folks, and I want to especially apologize to those folks. They've been through hell and come out the other side, and it's terrible of me to equate my problems with their real life suffering. All I can say in my defense is that I've never been in these circumstances and I don't know how to properly react. (Again, a pretty pathetic excuse, but the only one I have.) What I want to emphasize is this: ignore me. Please. That's been the best strategy for the last ten years (at least) of my life. All of you, all of us, have problems. PROBLEMS, for emphasis. My problems are no way greater than yours. Everything keeps getting worse, but it's still less than most of you folks have suffered. I have been, and always shall be...nothing. At best, a footnote somewhere. Live long and prosper. BC Posted by: BeckoningChasm at December 01, 2018 09:46 PM (l9m7l) 24

The Trumps are nice people.
The Bushes are also nice people. I know it's popular here to be all RINO sellout globalist illuminati about them, but try to remember HW's time. Iraq had the world's fourth largest Army. America had lost the ability to project power except for tinpots like Grenada and Panama. We were still mentally in VietNam. HW put together a coalition including Arabs and French and supervised a near-perfect war which put America on the map in a whole new way. The Cold War was pushed toward and end by Ronaldus Maximus, but it ended on HW's watch. There was a lot that could have gone wrong with the dissolution of the USSR and the reunification of Germany, but it didn't. He was a world figure on the world stage. No one is that. God loves each of us. I don't know your circumstances, but I do know that the key to happiness is being able to see beauty in the smallest things, the most everyday things. Free your mind from yourself long enough to appreciate the beauty of Christmas lights against the backdrop of darkness, or a balmy day in December. That is what got me through the darkness after losing my husband. For awhile I really didn't value life at all. Think outside yourself, anyway. Try to help other people, even if incrementally. Posted by: publius, the Duke of Miley's Ficus at December 01, 2018 10:09 PM (NMAzL) Well for sure you'll want to get rid of that first, or else you won't get any metal-to-metal conductive heat transfer. Butter works but isn't ideal long-term; the article says it will liquify pretty much immediately. Also butter is for eating. Some other commenters have suggested less-silly substitutes. You can probably find something that'll work for a day or two until you can get real thermal paste. Getting the dust and gunk out should make a huge difference. If the fins on the heatsink are easy enough to get to, a couple drops of 99% isopropyl every once in a while helps too. Posted by: hogmartin at December 01, 2018 10:17 PM (t+qrx) 137

Laptop problems. I was having increasing difficulties connecting to the internet via wireless. It got worse and worse over the period of a few weeks. Became almost unusable.
Then, the 'Battery Low' warning came on. Whut? I mean it was plugged in. Checked the 'AC Adapter', i.e., in-line power supply, and sure enough, dead soldier. Apparently it had been on it's way out for a while, and was not not fully charging the battery. Now, it is simply a fact that RF receivers (and transmitters, for that matter) become less sensitive as their power supply droops. That seems to have been the case here. Either the computers internal switching supply was sagging, or the wireless link is powered off the unregulated battery. Which ever, I kludged on a Dell 18V supply in place of the Toshiba 19V supply, and everything has been hunky dory. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc.,etc. at December 01, 2018 10:22 PM (Vhoaq) 144

> I will say that GHWB was one of the very few veteran politicians that served honorably in combat during WW II.
Before JFK you're looking at guys like Eisenhower (way too high up the food chain for combat in WWII) and Truman (saw combat in France in WWI). JFK was in combat (although his biography puffed up his bravery quite a bit, he really was on a torpedo boat that got sunk by the Japanese). Ford was in numerous naval actions on board the USS Monterey. Of those who didn't see combat: Johnson was in the South Pacific, and volunteered for observer duties on a bombing mission on a Japanese base in New Guinea, though the plane he was on developed mechanical trouble and didn't complete the mission. Technically not combat, but neither was it the safest duty station in the world. Nixon was also in the South Pacific as a logistics officer (at his own request... he had a safe billet in Iowa, but asked to be transferred to a combat zone). Carter didn't graduate from Annapolis until '46, so didn't really have a chance to serve in WWII. Reagan's eyesight disqualified him for overseas duty. After Bush I, we're pretty much looking at Korea or Vietnam, not WWII. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at December 01, 2018 10:26 PM (8ecsm) 156

She chases it toward the buffet, catches it, then goes back under the kitchen table, loses it, we all run into the front room, they run around the desk, under the couch, and she finally loses it somewhere around a corner bookshelf, which Ony proceeds to stake out, pointlessly, for a long time. She's got her spotting and chasing and catching skills down. The whole killing thing needs some work. When I first got to college, My Roommate was an annoying geek. I became friends with a guy across the hall who also had an annoying roommate, I'll call Other Roommate.
I don't remember how it happened, but we managed to swap roomies so the annoying boys were together. And of course drove each other twice as crazy as either had been driving us before. One of the problems was Other Roommate's girlfriend. Anyway, Other Roommate ended up being one of the first folks I knew to move off campus, where he shacked up with his girlfriend, and My (Ex-)Roommate had the room to himself, so everybody was okay. I just mention it because I'm pretty sure the couple in the last pic are Other Roommate and his girlfriend.

Is that a reserve thing? I just looked at my DD214
and block 23 says "released from active duty and transferred to Naval Reserves" but it just means IRR. I guess I never thought about what it would say for actual drilling reservists. Posted by: hogmartin at December 02, 2018 12:12 AM I was "enlisted reserve" from the get-go... My only active duty was BT and the annual two-week ADT, so, I assume, I was officially done with the Army after BT... I recall I had to write a letter and wait to get documentation of reserve service and discharge status... I'd changed addresses after I separated, and the papers I got mention that I couldn't be found at the time for formal separation processing, or some such... Marijuana, a veritable gold mine.
Marijuana, pot, weed, ghanja, it all means the same thing - you smoke it and you get high. (I think that's from some ancient National Lampoon comedy album.) A Child's Garden Of Grass https://youtu.be/RY7voHJ8VDk Stereophonic stoner comedy that has held up pretty well. Went looking for one cut and listened to the whole thing again. The State of Oklahoma took years to repeal booze prohib. Took years more to get liquor by the drink. Still more years to be able to buy cold real beer and wine (finally just this year) even in grocery stores. Slow to change? I kind-of like being where change is assessed slowly and liberalities adopted hesitantly. It's real conservatism. Even when it comes to repeal of governmental tyrannies, remember Chesterton's fence. Now suddenly Oklahoma has legalized "medical marijuana." Pay a doctor. Pay a fee (over and over) and you are licensed to purchase from a cannabis boutique, or grow your own, up to certain arbitrary government-set amounts. Yay, freedom! And if you have a medical marijuana license, you must be so mentally ill that you can't be licensed to carry guns, THE STATE has so ruled. So... Can I stick a seed in the dirt and grow a plant and put it in my pipe and smoke it and shoot any SOB who tries to come and steal my plant? No? Still tyranny. I'd still rather live in Oklahoma than anywhere. We'll work it out. * tosses back shot of legal booze * Related quasi-autobiographical-maybe comic linked in nic. It's late. I'm babbling. My teeth cry out for brushing. My pillow-Siren calls to me. Rooster cat cries at dawn. Fred's mustache is against the wall. ------ That shit paid my way through school. All the people I still have as friends quit doing/selling them when it was time be adults. It's better than having debts, and all the idiots are dead or in prison, so I guess it sorts itself out. But... there was a lot of risk for everyone on every step of those transactions, and a lot of people faced consequences. What happens if it's all legal, and a lot of the consequences are obviated? I don't know if it ends like 19th century China, but that's a distinct risk. There's always the possibility that our society rots from the inside and some other one takes us down. I'm not saying that would happen, but it's still something to consider. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at December 02, 2018 01:25 AM (5aX2M) 425

with the size of the stones of everyone on our side in the fight you would think their ships would have sunk in port and the planes would never have made it off the decks. Posted by: yankeefifth at December 02, 2018 01:51 AM (MTjB1) 448

Counting Crows. That video reminds me of the most boring concert I've ever been to. It shouldn't have been that way. I had tickets to the sound check, and the Crow's Nest (a tiny backstage seating area with a bird's eye view of the stage). But these guys made Jeb look high energy. You've got to do a touch more than stand still for two hours playing like it's just another rehearsal of shit you've played a zillion times. I looked at my phone for awhile. I may have fallen asleep (okay, definitely fell asleep).
Not as bad as the unspeakable Alanis Morissette "concert". Just boring. Posted by: Rusty Nail at December 02, 2018 02:00 AM (SN4NF) 457

Y5, my own self and others have, more than once, made the same observation - what an incredible movie the Battle off Samar, the most dramatic and heroic part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, would make, if done properly (i.e., simply tell the actual story).
When the enemy fleet has its officers lining the rail, saluting your sinking ship due to their respect for your valor and warrior ethic, it's somethin'. (I believe this happened with one or more IJN ships with the demise of the USS Samuel B. Roberts, but I might be misremembering) Some of the naval battles of Guadalcanal deserve their own movies to memorialize the valor of *both* sides and the unbelievable ferocity of it all. But Samar simply begs to be told, straight. Have a friend who's father was in naval aviation, one time years ago visiting him I noticed a magnet on his refrigerator - "St Lo Survivor's Association" - he didn't know what it was about, I explained (father was not the survivor, but a friend of his father's was one of the pilots who was in the air when the ships was hit, and landed/ditched on the beach). But you sorta already knew that. Canuckistan got what you'd expect from an incredibly poorly played, weak hand. MX did much better. That is, if USMCA is approved. If not, both countries will be begging and screaming like Navajos (obscure Woody Allen reference) for something like USMCA. Bilateral trade deals to follow a no-deal period could be brutal. my second boss was the chairman of the company. he kept some dice in a cup on his desk, between his bloomberg monitor and computer monitor. sometimes when we were debating an investment he would have everyone involved in to debate the decision. sometimes, when the debating was done, he would lean back in his chair, fold his hands and think for a minute. sometimes he would "say this is a tough one." every so often he would grab the cup of dice shake it, toss them on his desk, study them, the do this two or three more times. then he would say "well, this is a tough one but I guess we have to go with it" or "I guess we have to turn it down." much later he confessed over scotch that he was just fucking with everyone and the dice meant nothing. Morning Horde,
No sleep for me tonight. Things suck here, and are about to get really bad in about a week. If you could consider helping, I would appreciate it very much. https://www.gofundme.com/help-with-time-to-find-employment The campaign tells the story, but the short of it is that I have been looking for any kind of work for 4 months. I am 56, partially handicapped but able to work phones. It is like I don't even exist in the job market these days. I have been everywhere, and gotten nothing. Public assistance is not an option, as I ran the evaluation and food stamps are the only available assistance for me, despite having tiny assets and zero income. Things get very bad here within a week. Anything you could do would be greatly appreciated. Be well. Posted by: Calm Mentor at December 02, 2018 04:18 AM (ffYR/) 492

The "Name that Tune" link is a nostalgia trip for a boomer. I've realized recently that we had, aside from the obvious ones, another advantage over other generations. TV for us was both ubiquitous and limited. So we ended up watching an unusually broad sample of eras; pretty much everything since the introduction of talkies. And of course, the music that accompanied it.
That did make us more open to things outside our own very brief time span. I've found the younger generation mostly unable to process stuff even from the 90s, let alone earlier. And don't even mention black and white to them. I've actually seen "all time" lists which don't go back 25 years. It didn't however, stop us from being a bunch of pernicious self-absorbed self-righteous shits. We've all been saying for years, it's rural vs. urban America. The big cities skew elections all the way to the left. In France, the socialist President sticks high fuel taxes on the population, knowing full well the worst burden will be on rural areas. Now it looks like the battle has begun in earnest as the 'rurals' have blocked the roads into the cities, cutting off the food supply. That was my prediction for a quick victory in CW 2.
