---

The hospital filed for bankruptcy protection back in July. Admin was always saying they were trying to find new investors or buyers. Had a group come in in October pledging to get things back in order and sell off in 5 years once the hospital was sound, apparently they then saw how bad off the hospital was financially and said "sorry, we cant help." Admin tried to get the State involved as we were the only hospital in our county and the State ran it for awhile back in the 90s, but as we know, the government moves slow and we ran out of money before we could find new investors.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at December 05, 2018 09:35 AM (fuK7c)

I hope not. There's a difference between art history (which is where my training is and where my brain automatically goes) and art appreciation. I made a point of reading these manifestos to better understand the artists' motivations and the artworks' meanings. I do know that I really like Socialist/Communist art of the early 20th century, especially the Germans, so I know I can turn it off if I want. And I have here many times. (But I'm ashamed about how I feel about some Nazi art.)

I think here, today, I just wanted to inform. But I like the colors here. They are very bright. The faces look happy and life in this cityscape seems OK.

My recurring 30 year dream... I'm back in the barracks, trying to find a uniform in my wall locker before morning formation and inspection. The only one available is one of my old field BDU sets, which are faded, wrinkled, and have numerous repairs. I just KNOW that I'm gonna get dinged because everyone else is wearing the new digicams, in good repair. Funny thing, in the dream I know that BDUs are still authorized for wear, but frowned upon.

There are variations on the theme, but that's the gist.

180 *groans*

I just saw the Captain Marvel trailer.

And in the middle of it, they post alone on the screen in BIG letters, the words-

WITH HER

which morphs into

WITH A HERO

Welp, at least, they're not being the least bit subtle about this being another bit of Fymynyst Mary Sue Propaganda built in support of-

The Still Shambling Cultural Zombie of the Never-to-Be Hillary! Presidency.

Dear God, these people are tiresome.

I know I'm late to the party on this, but Ace is correct-

This has the smell of Ancient Childless 60's Generation Cat Woman Failure all over it.

A mohawk...better yet a Power Mohawk!

Are mohawks even a thing anymore? I hear the late 70's calling.

SJW concerns ("with her"- yeeesh!) instead of, you know, entertainment.

Looks like previous harass Nick Fury gets the All-Knowing Mary Sue Fymynyst Contempt treatment which made both "Ghostbusterettes" and "The Last Jedi" such a delight.

The people they're building this movie for, do not support superhero movies and/or comics,

S-o-o-o-o-o-o, no wonder Disney stock is plunging.

219 easy enough:

in the foreground are dishes on a table before a window. faces of the people i n the room are reflected in the window glass through which we see the city and its buildings from several vantages. simultaneously.

someone above said it the painting reminded him of the russian movie "man with a movie camera". it's pretty much a compilation of those techniques double exposure, fades, fast editing.

simultaneity was as much a concern as movement for the futurists.

My favorite was the old recurring one where I was being chased by a horse-sized dragon-like monster through an abandoned castle. One day I went a little lucid in it, and was like "wait a minute, this whole premise is stupid. I'm a f-ing wizard now."

I looked down, saw a spellbook in my hands, and started singing fireballs at the monster and chasing it through the castle. Haven't had that one since. I guess the monster didn't find it fun anymore.

Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again . . . well, actually the place I lived in as a boy on Bourbon Street. (Yes, really.) For some reason it was raised from the sidewalk, and inside it looked like the set to Doctor No's island base. I looked out where the yard used to be, and suddenly there were people asking me if I was a Dreamer. "No," I said firmly, "born in the USA of USA parents, and I have all the documents you'd ever need."

Then I woke up.

"Thermal paste" is a euphemism.

No, it's not seriously. Miley's old Toshiba laptop was overheating all the time -- the damn heat sink design was shitty and the fine-toothed fins would clog up with dust.

So, I tore it down an sure 'nuff, it was plugged solid. It's some heat pipe affair leading from the CPU over to the fan assembly -- all very tight tiny little stuff crammed into a laptop case.

The thermal paste was sort of dried, and hell, I went on a wild goose chase trying to find some. So I ordered some.

The Futurist philosophy was that the world must remain in a state of constant change, which may be interpreted as "progress," so the more change the better. This meant they were major supporters of war, and therefore major supporters of fascism. This also meant they believed in volatility, so they antagonized art patrons by being jerks. For example, they'd putting itching powder in the seats of theater chairs. They were a precursor to Dadaism, and have many impulses and beliefs that are common to the modern left.

The saddest part of modern Hollywood, I think, is epitomized by two movie franchises:

Fantastic Beasts
and
The Star Wars Anthology movies

Both are designed to expand universes that guarantee solid opening weekends, allowing for greater creativity in terms of storytelling.

"Want to tell a weird little story in the Harry Potter universe for $50 million and guarantee a solid return? Sure! We can do it!"

Instead, they're all event movies, costing $200 million +, requiring the studios to make a billion dollars on each film. That leads to sanitized and generic storytelling.

They have franchises that will allow them to print money, and a model that allows them to do that on smaller investments, but they're wasting all of it.

==========

That's a decision that I agree with.

They walked into a franchise to revisit it with the original cast. They could either navigate the vast canvas that was the EU, catering to fans instead of general audiences, or they could have wiped it clean and started fresh.

Maybe they should have ended up including more EU content into what they did create (like they did with Thrawn in Rebels) by adding in Mara Jade or something, but the base decision to wipe out the EU for the purposes of the franchise going forward was probably the right thing to do.

The thing died on her before she moved down here. I got her a new one, an HP and sent it up there in Penn. When she got down here with it, I checked it out. All it needed was a hard reset, turned out. Completely depower it and then start cold.

It started up, but the overheating problem became manifest and I looked it up. I was trying to update it and it failed. The hardware was getting flakey from getting too hot. It started acting flakey before it went into thermal shutdown, which told the story. The next morning, I booted it up and the update went through cold, and I learned about the overheating cause.

The fan blows through these little fins and it had become completely clogged with dust. Damn thing would get hot enough to burn you almost.

Oh, and decent writers and a willingness to let the story be as simple as it needs to be.

334 328 I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but it's so sad to think of how easy it should be. I bet a $3M-$5M movie based on Terry Pratchett's witches that sets the entire Discworld franchise into motion could be easily done, compelling, and require little more than a few farmhouses and simple sets.

Oh, and decent writers and a willingness to let the story be as simple as it needs to be.

335 The saddest part of modern Hollywood, I think, is epitomized by two movie franchises:

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, If you've read and enjoyed any of my works, please leave a review on Amazon. at December 05, 2018 10:45 AM (XSSCs)

It's a real shame that Hollywood doesn't seem to see the real artistic value in movie franchises.

A cinematic universe lets you shorthand certain things when you tell a story. You don't have to start from the ground up. If you're making a war movie, you don't need to explain to us why the Nazis were the bad guys and why we should be rooting against them. We already know that, so you can spend all your time telling the story you want to tell an don't have to waste exposition on setup.

Cinematic universes do the same thing for universes other than a strictly historical backdrop. The should let you tell any number of slightly fantastical stories on a familiar backdrop without having to explain as much as you would otherwise. Rogue One did this (mostly) well. It was a war movie set in the Star Wars universe. The characters we were already familiar with had cameos that helped ground us and connect us to what we we already knew about the timeline (in the same way that WWII movies will often show snippets of Churchill speeches, or have a scene about Pearl Harbor, or the D day invasion). Solo and Fantastic Beasts failed because they're putting too much stock into characters we already know about and whose arcs were already fleshed out in the existing lore. If Solo was a generic heist movie set in the Star Wars universe where Han Solo was only a tangential character, it wouldn't have been so offensive.

There have only been two Anthology movies so far, and Rogue One was the one that felt the most different.

Solo felt like a Marvel movie in the Star Wars universe, and it felt weird.

It also cost $250 million.

If they had made an actual heist movie set in the Star Wars universe (sure, include Solo himself), and spent less than $100 million on it, then it wouldn't have needed to make a billion dollars to turn a profit. And the haul that Solo did pull in ($300 million +) might still have been disappointing, but it wouldn't have been destructive for Disney.

The iron was hot right after Harry Potter ended.

Fantastic Beasts doesn't even include the words "Harry Potter" in the title, and the first one opened really well.

It's about the studio extending the life of the franchise to include new generations through new content, and the bridge is the parents who grew up with the original.

However, Boccioni started as a Divisionist and wound up doing . . . this kind of stuff. So maybe old Pietro had a point.

470 446 They make the mistake a lot of TV spinoffs do.. You take one character out of an ensemble cast and give them their own show..

Joey - spun off from Friends
The Tortelli's - spun off from Cheers (although Frasier was a big hit!)
Fish - Barney Miller

I could go on..

could be worse. they could take a character that is only alluded to in the series and give them a show.

471 It was intended to be a serious war movie set in the Star Wars universe. The producers required them to back off the war content, because Star Wars isn't about war.
Posted by: Rob Crawford at December 05, 2018 11:18 AM (ljEFa)

Except for the fact that it's in the title, and every movie has involved laser swords, ray guns, and a battle of good against evil.

Nope, totally not about war.

That's funny because the third act of that movie is the best part. It's sort of disjointed before that, but once they get to Scarif, you know shit's going to hit the fan, and you're just wondering if any of them are going to make it out of there.

============

The result of the reshoots was a cohesive setpiece that is the third act.

The whole movie is kind of a weird mess of a movie that ends up working despite itself.

474 Polling is underway to select a name for the new Seattle NHL team.

Candidates include the Sockeyes, the Steelheads, the Kraken and the

Grunge.

Seattle should break the patriarchy and field the first NHL all-womens team. Call it the Seattle Amazons. Good corporate tie in with that sweet, sweet billionaire guilt cashola coming in. Lesbians all over America will join the Seattle yutes in loving the team, and Bre Peyton can do promos on TV.

475 They've made short mini-series from "The Colour of Magic", "Going Postal", and "Hogfather". They're good -- not great -- and have some great names attached (Sean Astin as Twoflower, Jeremy Irons as Vetenari, Christopher Lee as Death).

"Going Postal" was great. Charles Dance as Vetinari was inspired casting.

There's also supposed to be a Nightwatch mini-series in the works, but it is coming pre-ruined as they describe Corporal Littlebottom as "non-binary", which is the precise opposite of her character.

Groan. The whole 'diversity' schtick is something Pratchett lampooned in several of his books.

I'd contribute to such a "Nurse and Insomniac Getaway" fund.

But we are going to have black bag him to get him to go.

We'll need to plan this out. We get Nurse Ratched all slutted up, garter belt, f-me heels, etc, etc -- 'Ettes can handle that and set her up in some getaway location.

Then we 'Rons black-bag Insomniac and get him to her.

Then, once she gets a hold of him and gets him, well "agreeable", then we can slip out and let them have at it.

On the other hand, Pete and Gladys, spun off from December Bride, was something of a hit. Look it up; it's ooooold.

But such a hit is rare. Honey West spun from Burke's Law didn't do well. The pilot of Assignment Earth on Star Trek (you remember, Gary Seven and the cat) never went to series.

493 Just spitballin' here, but I feel like I sorta understand what makes Insomniac tick.

Anyway, I suspect the most effective way to ensure his resistance is to amp up the coercion. The more control he feels is in the hands of others, the harder it will be for him to trust things will work out well.

If you want to do something nice for him, let him know the ball is in his court and just work on convincing him that it would bring you joy to give him a blessing. It has nothing to do with him deserving it (he will not be able to shake the feeling that he doesn't deserve nice things) and everything to do with people who care about him and just want a chance to show it.

Does that make sense? And Insomniac, if I'm off-base here, please feel free to clarify.

495 473 I guess I kinda mean, communicate that it would not represent a loss to his benefactors to do this for him. It would be more of a loss to not get the opportunity to extend this gesture than it would be if he accepted. And it would still not be a loss even if nothing came of it.
