Jared's Diamonds Promotes Notion of Women Proposing to Men

Is this crazy? I don't know. A lot of men delay marriage. Maybe there shouldn't be such a stigma against women just being the initiators.

I realize that's not super-romantic but neither is the the current alternative course for a woman who wants to be married to a man who's delaying, which is dropping a lot of naggy hints combined with some semi-ultimatums.

In both cases the guy is being prodded along.

At least in one case, he doesn't have to shell out for a diamond.

Or does he? Maybe the girl is supposed to just get him a cheap diamond ring, with the expectation that he then has to reciprocate with a one-and-half-month's salary jobber.

I'm not entirely trolling with this #HotTake. A lot of people think that marriage is the answer to a lot of social dysfunction -- but men are said to often be in a virtual marriage strike. So anything that kind of pushes the ball towards the "marriage" side of the field would be an improvement, right?

Eh, okay, I'm mostly just trolling. But not completely. A lot of people hang out in not-going-anywhere relationships without making a real push to find out if it's going anywhere. Like dumb guys who become Friendsies with a girl and pine for her for years without ever just manning up and asking her out. And then they wonder why they spent the last two years alone.

As to the diamond, if he's going to marry her, and she wants one, then yes, he still needs to buy one. An unwillingness to make that purchase suggests lack of seriousness. It is, in some sense, a statement of commitment. Of course, if they'd both rather spend the money on other things, that's fine.

I can completely understand men not wanting the State to get involved in their marriage. Once you say "i do" you're life is basically in the hand of some divorce judge/bureaucrat. And 9 times out of 10 the system is made to benefit women.

I actually bought it and read it. It's fascinating stuff, the actual facts, I mean -- the business about how a lot of animal diseases like cowpox mutated and moved to humans, who lived in close proximity to their farm animals, as smallpox. Or why certain large wild animals were easy to domesticate, and others, like bison, were not.

But then his conclusions, that New Guinea tribesmen for example are at least as intelligent as the average European and that they didn't conquer the Americas because they didn't have big animals or certain crops -- No. Those factors might have contributed. But IQ and culture have even more to do with it.

Listen - even if you're a decisive guy, marriage these days really is kind of a sucker's bet. Unless most of your assets are unknown to the woman, and offshore, and you don't have any kids together, and don't plan to, I wouldn't recommend this in good faith to any man.

191 I don't have a problem believing that most populations have a pretty similar IQ potential. But one can train one's IQ to perform better in certain areas. A civilization that has writing, technology, etc. will push IQ to be strong in those areas, including abtractive thinking.

A bushman's IQ will be very trained to recognize landmarks and patterns in the stars for purposes of navigation. His brain will be attentive to details in the physical environment in a way that no civilized man could equal.

But ultimately, that kind of mental focus isn't what builds advanced societies. And advanced societies quickly get beyond needing that skill-set in the first place.

Apologies if this is too politically incorrect, but I'm willing to concede that certain races could have athletic superiority compared to other races. The average asian is not going to have the upper body strength of someone of African descent, etc.

the idea though that other parts of the body besides muscles (like the brain) could also have differences among races is an uncomfortable idea that may go against everything we want to hold dear, but it's not an outrageous idea imo

Contrary to the "Idiocracy" hypothesis, IQs have been steadily increasing. See the Flynn Effect.

They've been increasing at about 3 points per decade. IQ is normalized at 100. That is, the scale is defined so that the mean is 100, and the SD is 15 points (IIRC).

Every so often they have to renormalize.

The question is, are we really getting smarter, or just getting better at taking IQ tests.

Nutrition has probably had a lot to do with. I remember reading that iodine fortification probably was responsible for 10 IQ points increase.

I'm on my third ring now(gold then titanium then tungsten) I'm hard on rings. 24 years later. my wife has her original gold ring with upgraded yet smallish diamonds. Marriage is work and commitment all rolled into the ups and downs of life. Proposals and rings are theater that should not matter at all.

There are many examples of people changing more rapidly than one might expect. I'm in my mid thirties and it kinda sucks for dating. Twenty-somethings aren't interested, I'm not interested in the forty-somethings because they're too old to have kids, and women between 30 and 32 are mostly married or in long-term relationships that won't fall apart for another few years.

I'm 36, hence mid-thirties. I made a cut off of 32 because I want kids and the average woman's fertility starts to rapidly decline after 35. Once you factor in dating and an engagement, you're looking at marriage at late 33 or 34 if she's already 32. Not good odds.

The courts only try to determine the primary caregiver.

Child support laws, too. A woman can be the primary breadwinner but, depending on state, sure, the man will be required to pay x% depending on a formula that doesn't account for that. Nor does it factor in geographic factors, lots of fun if the state is where the median income is much less than where the man lives.

Bottom line, a guy could be making money in a state where he is barely getting by but considered solid middle class in another state, and be required to send a LOT of money. I'm not saying child support in and of itself is wrong or bad, but it's also used as a way to punish men in too many cases.

When this thing was in committee, the divorce lawyer's sent their lobbyists to the open hearings to have their say. They said, in no uncertain terms that they didn't care WHO the laws favored, as long as it favored one side or the other. And that if the bill made it out of committee they'd do everything in their considerable power to get all of those legislators out of office.

438 Divorce stories? My ex-wife remarried twice after me, had a kid with each one while I was raising our daughter. One of the guys was a hard core criminal and ended up vandalizing her apartment when they broke up. Then she left her third husband claiming abuse, moved in with my daughter, got drunk at a bar and tried to drive my daughter's 4-Runner home with two flat tires. Cops pulled her over in a shower of sparks and threw her in jail and impounded my daughter's car. She then fakes suicide by pills, ends up in psych ward, then rehab then is released to her ex-coke fiend born again friend (my daughter refused to let her come back) That lasts about two weeks, now she is on the loose again back with her third husband.
And my family wonders why I never remarried.

Different cultural expectations(among other things men are expected to take oaths seriously). However, consider if a guy had gotten CS, lost the house, but still had full custody? That's a pretty solid win.

Hmm, you must know me. I did that to my ex. I waited patiently, because I knew she'd screw up and I took the kids away.

I intentionally didn't ask for support, because I knew I could use the threat of going to court for support to keep the ex off my back. Worked like a charm.

449 Both daughters understood there would be no living together before marriage and no longer than a year engagement. There is a lot to be discovered in that one year engagement because things change once you put the ring on the finger. One daughter ended up giving the ring back at 6 months, and met and married a wonderful man. The other daughter married her hubby and they are so happy even after 11 years. Both have confirmed that we were right after all. There is a reason for successful marriages and it has a lot to do with respect.

450 Ace is 100% wrong that women should initiate a marriage proposal. I'm a woman in my late 50s, never married. I never understood men and if I was interested in one, I went after him and gave him whatever he wanted - total role reversal.

In my mid-40s I was like, "Why isn't this working?!" I read Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and Mars and Venus on a Date, and The Rules, and by the time I finished, I could see ALL the mistakes I made. I even experimented when I dated guys, took the advice, and it worked like a CHARM! Men would do what The Rules authors said they would, in about 15 seconds.

It was too late for me, I wanted a family, but it is what it is.

So, combine the effect of crazy women like Steinem, the horrors of divorce for men, women who were never told how courting worked and our anti-child tax code, for our birth rate decline. I would have happily had 3 or 4 kids, but I lived in a very confused time.

Very sad about it.

I do divorce work, some, and it's bad for men, but slowly judges are coming on that are children of divorce and thus fairer. Also, the laws in my state are less harsh than they used to be to men. Imperfect, but less harsh.

With so many women marrying and then divorcing (with the accompanying split of property in most states regardless of who provided what and of course child support whether the children are actually the man's or not) and the man then forced to pay through the nose for what ever some feminist family court judges is sufficient penalty.

Or even if they remain in the marriage it winds up being too often where they are nothing more than a cash box supplying the woman with her every whim.

Of course this is only at the upper middle class marriage levels. It can be the reverse at the lower income classes but even there there is quite a bit of onesidedness in the marriage.

Men have found they can do just as well without marriage as with which didn't used to be the case.

Many cases on record where the man has proven the children are not biologically his yet he has been forced to continue child care payments.
