Sixteen Democrats Sign Letter Vowing to Vote Against Nancy Pelosi's Bid To Become Speaker Again
A candidate for Speaker of the House needs 218 votes. Assuming all Republicans vote against Nancy Pelosi (an assumption we shouldn't make, because Trump claims he'll get Republicans to vote for Pelosi), then she can only afford to lose 15 Democrat votes out of the 233 they have.
Sixteen Democrats signed a letter stating they will vote against Pelosi, and three other Democrats have vowed to vote against her previously. So unless Trump actually does convince Republicans to vote for Pelosi -- which would make her Speakership illegitimate to many Democrats (whoopsie) -- she can't win at the moment.Comments

The point of getting her the post again would be to maintain her as the face of the Democratic Party for as long as possible.
She's electoral poison for Democrats in swing districts (at least historically).
I'd rather chance that happening again with her than on anyone else.

Here's the correct strategy, the ones the Dems use, and it's something the debate-club Right isn't really capable of.

Figure out where you want to take the initiative, and on what policies, and then demand pain-of-political-death Party discipline from all elected officials and Party proxies. No deviation from the plan in front of the public.
Step 2 is not even discussing specifics of the plan with the public. This is where the emotion comes in. Attack the Left, insult them, ridicule them, demonize them. Trump is good at this. At the same time, underscore your own connection to the voters at an emotional level. That you like them, care about them, and that your policies (such as they know about them) are conceived with their best interests at heart. Limbaugh is very good at this part.

This is what I was wondering. I thought that Pelosi was like an old appliance, fizzling out but periodically functional, whereas Occasional was more like a lump of granite, completely nonfunctional. Therefore it would be better to have Occasional as the new speaker.
But if the script is completely outside their hands as regards legislation and priorities, then it probably makes no difference which one of them is speaker.

well, first of all, I am not one of the ones here that fantasizes about the romance of armed conflict or some split of the country. this is my country, I want it all, and I do not want to be responsible for its dissolution.
second, the majority of the middle does not have any fixed beliefs, politically, one way or the other, they can be swayed. the are most easily swayed by emotion but it is not lasting.
third, having spent the majority of my adulthood surrounded by and interacting with those who identify as liberal and democrat, I will assure you that they have a bit of a cognitive dissonance. frequently they will advocate one thing politically and another personally. for instance what they advocate for other people's kids in public school is not what they implement with their own kids.
I have had quite a lot of success explaining my position on conservatism and the Constitution simply asking them which of the contracts they have signed wold they like to be a living document with words and obligations that are able to be redefined at someone's whim. that argument does not instantly persuade everyone but it definitely sticks. more than half of the people I have had that discussion with have come back to me at some point to rehash the argument with me. they are not all instantly swayed, but the fact the it stays with them suggests they are not entirely unthinking and set in their positions.
lots of people in blue states and cities are more like us than unlike us.
