It's Friday's ONT, Vile Thread of Misery, To Thee We Cling

Here's something fun to do that I pull with my Commenwealth-born wife all the time. Whenever someone from the UK wins an Olympic event, I ask her innocently “Why are they playing “My Country 'tis of Thee”?

Tonight's thread title was inspired by R. M. Huffman who is, quite honestly, one of the most talented people to claim membership in the Horde. On a website full of talented and brilliant people (and Brent Cochran), he truly shines. Not only is he a physician, an accomplished artist, and a published author, he is also a poet of no mean skill whose poems, and I say this with all sincerity, compare favorably with those of Dr. Seuss. His latest effort recounts the trials of one Garmond, who only wanted to open a successful sidewalk cafe.

You can read it here.

Enough culture. Time to come back down to ONT reality.

Politics

Couple of political links to get out of the way:

5 Dumb GOP Mistakes We Better Fix Before 2020. Good article, Kurt only makes two mistakes. He assumes that A) the GOP wants to hold a majority and B) if they do, that they'll actually do what they say.

Why Republicans Need To Self-Deport From Washington DC Self evident, and something that I would fix if I with writing a Constitution for a country that had just won its independence today: “All Congressmen and Senators shall maintain an office in their home district or state, and all Congressional functions and votes must be conducted from that physical location except in times of war or declared national emergency”. The Capital building should be ceremonial.

Why Democrats Would Dare to Steal Elections in Plain Sight A portent of Civil War II, perhaps? I wouldn't bet against it.

I'd Buy That

I read a lot, but I've never been a fan of audiobooks. I'd buy this one, although the 18th century Scottish accent would probably give me no end of trouble.

While we're at it, check out this thread of images from a Japanese illustrated history of America from 1861. Sample:

Sex Stuff

Inside Texas sex doll party where middle-aged men FONDLE each other’s silicone lovers There's even a video tour at the link, narrated by one “Brick Dollbanger”. That name sounds like something conjured up by Stuart Woods on a bad acid trip.

L.A. Band Threatin Faked a Fanbase To Land a European Tour No One Attended

Talking up your own band a little bit to make it appear that you’re more popular than you are is a rite of passage for young acts. We’ve heard of plenty of bands that’ve exaggerated sales or live show numbers to land a gig or two, or talked themselves up to national media for some press attention. It comes with the territory, and it’s usually harmless.

But the Los Angeles band Threatin have taken that idea to a level previously thought unimaginable: the band was able to book an entire tour of Europe despite having no fanbase whatsoever, and it’s all in the process of crashing down around them.

More at the link, it's quite the story. If Hebrew ideation were popular in heavy metal circles, I'd say that the band should change its name to Chutzpah.

Question of the Day

So, Mary is the mother of Jesus, right? And Jesus is the Lamb of God. Does that mean that Mary had a little lamb?

This May Be The Most Incredible Thing I've Ever Read

THAT TIME AN ASTRONAUT LOST HIS WEDDING RING IN SPACE

Apollo 16 command module pilot Ken Mattingly lost his wedding ring while orbiting the Moon. Nine days later, on their way back to Earth, they stopped 50,000 miles from the Moon for a spacewalk. Suddenly the ring floats by and lunar module pilot Charlie Duke is able to grab it. I would pay real money to know what the actual odds of that happening are.

Rotary engines... man, i just don't even know what. Not Wankel rotaries, WWI-era airplane rotaries.

So, Mary is the mother of Jesus, right? And Jesus is the Lamb of God. Does that mean that Mary had a little lamb?

So, I'm triggered... or culturally inappropriated... or something... about this.. dagnabbit, I'm sorry, I just can't remember how to meme the psychos sometimes.

107 Kurt only makes two mistakes. He assumes that A) the GOP wants to hold a majority and B) if they do, that they'll actually do what they say.
----------------------------------------
Nah. Only the second assumption would be a mistake, IMO. The belief that the GOP (or Dems) don't want the extra perks and power that come with being in the majority strikes me as silly.

Just because they don't want to use their power for the things WE want, for the things they promised to voters, doesn't mean they don't want it.

That's been thought of before. Atheist Dan Barker (founder of the Freedom From Religion Foundation) before he deconverted was an evangelical composer. He wrote two musicals "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "It's Fleece was White as Snow".

On the other hand, it would include Napoleon, and possibly a few throwaway lines about how inferior the Viennese whores were compared to Berlin. So....good enough for an off-Broadway musical, maybe.

124 Dr. Mrs. T. and I just got back from seeing "Bohemian Rhapsody" with some other normal, happy people. It's a biopic about Freddy Mercury.

I give it three stars out of five. It gets a bonus star for actually showing the Eighties promiscuous gay bathouse culture as being a bad thing -- but then loses one star because you wind up staring at the freaky dental appliance the guy playing Mercury wears throughout the film.

Apparently the other members of Queen had leverage over the moviemakers (because they have the rights to their music) so it kind of winds up being a sneaky paean to normal, sensible life.

Was given morphine after abdominal surgery for cancer. Projectile vomiting again, with so much liquid loss they kept me an extra two days due to dehydration.

The opiates didn't do all that much for the pain, either. Naproxin is, for me at least, a whole lot better for pain control with no side effects.

Correct, they had to be hand propped for the initial start but surprising they are easier to hand prop then a radial like the J-5 Wright on Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis. The rotary engine is like a big flywheel, it doesn't take much to get it moving and it stays rotating for a long time. The prop on a regular engine like a radial will stop a lot faster, it's doesn't have a lot of mass and it's fighting the compression stroke.

I beg to differ.

Christianity is based on Jesus dying on the cross for man's sin, and He conquered death.

The Bible, imho, from Genesis to Revelation, is all about God's love for us, in the form of Jesus Christ.

Jesus is God that was made flesh.

Sorry, but the more I read the gospel, the more I realize that God is truly great.

A LOT (most?) of early airplanes used rotary engines, and yes, there were wheeled vehicles that used it too, but none come to mind. It must have had some advantages, but I have no idea what they could be. It seems like any benefits would be completely lost trying to overcome the difficulty of feeding it air and fuel while the entire engine is spinning at the speed of the driven element, but clearly it made sense to do it that way for a while at least.

256 I beg to differ.

You should read, The Case for Jesus by Lee Strobel.

270 149 -- "Has anyone ever had a root canal?"

I have. They will give you light sedation through an IV if you are really having problems, but it's A LOT more expensive to do that way. They did mine with local + Valium (I didn't feel any different after taking the Valium than before, though). Some people opt for local + laughing gas. Practicing "square breathing" during the procedure helped me more than anything else because it gave me something active to do while I was sitting there. Went to see a movie after.

Then I had a provider of 'biomimetic' dentistry put an onlay on it instead of a full crown. My case was a good candidate for that, but not everyone's is.

I ended up needing a steroid about a week later to get the swelling to finish going away, but most people do not. Apparently the procedure stirred up some germs or something and my body mounted a protest.

Spouse has also had a root canal. They did not do a crown because spouse already had veneers. A couple of months later, the tooth broke off and we had to pay for an implant on top of what we'd already paid for the root canal. Because of that, spouse had encouraged me to just pull it and go directly to an implant.

CalFire is a state agency but they use Federal resources often, ie Air Tankers, Air Tactical aircraft (me) and Helos, engines and ground crews under a MOU Memorandum of Understanding. The Cal Fire fucks are so arrogant they get into turf wars over tactics, they hoarde resources when they could help somewhere else and just generally gum up the works. They'll burn down a subdivision while arguing over suppression tactics. I have a sticker on the back of my helmet that says 'Fuck the way they do it in California'

Ahhh... different kind of rotary engine.

Wankel engines used a single rotor that was roughly triangular shaped (technically, a curve of constant width).

The rotary engines mentioned above are conventional piston-and-cylinder engines, but with the pistons arranged in a circle, rather than inline or in a V arrangement.

Yes. The one above is a radial; the cylinders are all arrayed around the moving crankshaft which is attached to the propeller. The cylinders don't move.

A rotary engine - like the old WWI biplane engines - has the stationary crankshaft fixed to the airframe, with an engine bolted onto that, and the propeller bolted to the front face of the engine. The entire engine spins around the crankshaft, turning the propeller along with it.

Shit is bonkers.

A poor aviator lay dying,
At the end of a bright summer's day.
His comrades had gathered about him.
To carry his fragments away.

The airplane was piled on his wishbone,
His Hotchkiss was wrapped round his head;
He wore a spark-plug on each elbow,
'Twas plain he would shortly be dead.

He spit out a valve and a gasket,
And stirred in the sump where he lay,
And then to his wondering comrades,
These brave parting words he did say:

"Take the magneto out of my stomach,
And the butterfly valve off my neck,
Extract from my liver the crankshaft,
There are lots of good parts in this wreck.

"Take the manifold out of my larynx,
And the cylinders out of my brain,
Take the piston rods out of my kidneys,
And assemble the engine again."

Well, if you adopt the rightful, subservient position in relation to an all powerful God that can breathe all of creation into existence, you kind of recognize how foolish it is to try to place limits on what such a God could do with "my scientific models".

We are limited by time and scope as to what we could possibly understand and then try to reconcile an incomprehensible to our comprehension and then pretend that if the two were not reconcilable that we would reject the primary for sake of our secondary.

It would be like telling a writer of Star Wars novels that a "Jedi could never do that" because of your attempts to determine what the rules and limitstions are. But the writer is the creator, and the creator makes the rules, whether you can reconcile them to your own or not.

Seems to me the whole design is inherently unstable. If one prop stops turning, the whole thing will topple over in a heartbeat, because the center of mass is well above the center of lift. If the props were arranged in a canopy over the pilot's head, if one prop failed, the thing would tilt over a bit, but might still be controllable.

Just one of a million things I believe atheists don't understand is, the scientific method is NOT designed to, and never was designed to, investigate EVERYTHING. It is designed to investigate conditions that exist on our planet, in this universe, in our system of physics.

God exists outside of physics, and is way too big for those rules. He makes the rules but He doesn't have to live by 'em. Therefore, the scientific method is worthless with regard to the study of God.

407 All four of my wisdom teeth came in perfectly, straight and true, with little pain.

But almost immediately, the bottom ones began to disintegrate, with pieces breaking off. Before long there was hardly anything above the gumline. The upper ones were fine.

Anyway, the dentist said I had to have all four of them extracted because he said the upper ones would continue to grow and cause problems with my bite if only the lower ones were removed. It seemed a shame to waste two perfectly good teeth.

Not one of the calls to my work cell phone yesterday were from the same number. Five were the exact same recorded "Hellooooooo! Three were about the student loan refi I applied for (I haven't had a student loan in 20 years), three were about the job I'd applied for (because I put my work cell on my resume, don't you?), and one was from a guy in my department.

The city is laid out along one "freeway" parallel to the coast. Tall buildings crowd along each side.

Say what you will about the UAE, they got the cash to try out crazy things.

My beautiful twin sister, I'm doing well. For certain values of well.

Gotta open up a wall behind the washing machine, tomorrow morning. Something leaking, most likely the washer drain down-pipe. And it's ruined an area of hardwood flooring in the dining room, 'bout 2ft by 7ft.

Good news is, I've got about that much leftover hardwood from when I installed it all back in '08.

Bad news is, I've got to do framing, plumbing, sheetrock, tape, float, texture n' paint, and then re-flooring...

Good news though. I've got all the tools and skills and experience necessary to do the job.

Bad news is, the new Zero Volatile Compound paints.... they don't lay down smoothly like the paints of a decade ago.

Good news is Flowetrol. I'll mix it 50% if I've got to. I'll not have brushstrokes remaining in my paintwork. It's offensive.

Changing subjects, slightly. In my one USAF hitch, I was on the base Rifle n' Pistol Team and an alternate to the Air Training Command team.

Tinnitus is a constant companion.

Age *cough sixty* Twenty Nine.

Mrs. Krebs and I were talking about unsolicited phone calls today. You know, the types of calls that registering with the feral gubmint's "Do Not Call List" were supposed to have curtailed. Long story short, we're getting more and more such calls despite having registered our phone numbers on said list.

My conclusion? Add "Do Not Call List" to list of things gubmint not only does not do well, but does badly. Move over, low flush toilets, compact fluorescent lightbulbs and all you other misfit "helpful" things that our betters in gubmint established for us, there's a new kid joining you on the Group W bench.

425 Moar History with rotary engines!

Early airplanes like the Sopwith Camel had clockwise rotating rotary engines and propellers. The engine and propeller are a gyroscope and have a great gyroscopic effect on a light airplane like the Sopwith Camel. Gyroscopic procession for a clockwise rotating engine and propeller meant that right tuns tended to force the airplane down into the ground (bad) but left turns tended to force the airplane up (good as long as you don't stall). Also, pilots sit in the left seat, so they can see where they're going in a left turn.

This is why modern standard airport traffic patterns have the airplane turn left.

Your decision, of course. But when I got a percentage added, and reconciled with a record of having seen a doc while I was still in, but not having the percentage make it onto the total assessed at separation, it got backdated and I ended up with a tax-free check six months later, for the rating difference multiplied by the number of months between then and the original claim.

So, your decision.

448 @ hogmartin. Alas, I never made a complaint while in service.

Here's the rub. I've still got very good audio acuity. I can sit in the booth, and "detect" the sounds IN SPITE OF the tinnitus.

Because the ear, like the eye, "hears" everything. The brain is the filter.

I practice and make use of as much of my peripheral vision as possible, and it pays dividends even now.

Audio-wise, I do the same. I hear the ringing tinnitus. And can still discern subtle nuances between high-end Hi-Fi systems.

It's just that the tinnitus keeps creeping ever upward above my audio horizon, so to speak.

Dammit.

Take a toy gyroscope, and set it spinning upright. Push down on the frame at the six o'clock position. It will resist that motion, and instead dip at 3:00 or 9:00, depending upon spin direction.

I'm sure it is - the same recording comes from all different numbers, some with different area codes. Lately they seem to have stopped trying to spoof the NPA-NXX so it looks like someone with almost the same phone number as you, too. If I could be sure that getting a real person on the line and stringing them along would run up their bill and blow out the gossamer-thin margins these muppetfuckers operate on (since their whole scam is that it costs them nothing to spam tens of thousands of numbers if a just few fish bite), I would. I have hours a day where I'm just watching computers not do something, I could use a chat. But, they're undoubtedly paying nothing for the phone calls to begin with.

A lot of modern steam engines use that same mechanism, except that the cylinders are powered by steam instead of gas explosions, obviously. It has that wobbly look from the off center hub. Kind of weird.

522 Well, the ongoing saga of my Ford transmission goes on. Got most of the guts in the case, including the intermediate clutch. Last component in is the front pump, which includes the servo for that clutch. Take the servo apart, the rubber lip seals on it are, not surprisingly, stiff and worn out. Go to get the new ones out of the parts kit, and there aren't any. Didn't come with. Damn.

One other puzzle: there's this six-inch snap ring I can't find a place for. All the clutch drums are assembled, and their snap rings in place. Had the guts in and out of the case twice, looking for the home for this stray part. I'm getting pretty quick at it, now, by golly! Finally found it on an exploded view on the Internet. Turns out I could have left it out, no problem. It simply rests on a ledge in the rear of the case (case standing upright on its tail end to facilitate loading the guts in it), and acts to keep the low/reverse band from falling too far into the case, as an "aid to assembly". And then it just sits there, doing nothing, for the life of the transmission. But I put it in, anyway.

Now I have to wait until Monday, to get the two lip seals.

I will be glad to see the end of this one.

Yes, certainly I'd take a prayer. Thank you so much. It's an amazingly small group of people that fly fires. Maybe 300 People. Every one I know would give their life. It's sort of an unwritten code amongst us but there are some grim faces in the morning briefings in situations like CA now. I flew Napa last year. I try to avoid CA but fly there often.
Jim-
The A-10 I think was a good idea but the airplane was built around the gun. The gun is 37 feet long with ammo bay and the tank it was conceived to carry was in the ammo bay which was in the wrong part of the airframe for center of gravity reasons. I fly Air Tactical so the King Air is my Favorite. Used to fly Barons which were a hot rod. Super fast roll rate to look at things which I loved but the FS wants turbines now so we fly C-90A's and B's. Turbo Commanders are the worst. Orphan airframes, vendors scrounge salvage yards for parts. Wouldn't own one

General anesthesia is considered dangerous, since people occasionally don't wake up. I think I actually got a general when I had some teeth extracted as a child, which surprises me in retrospect.

For a recent surgery, they ran tests of my heart, kidneys, and liver so the anaesthesiologist could judge the risk, since it's his career on the line if too many patients die.

There remains no more need for the Turbo Commander, given that Eisenhower passed HOW long ago?

Gorgeous airframe though.

And a reference from today's news.

Roy Clark has passed. Everyone knows him rightfully, as the musician beyond compare, because he was.

Hot stick on the Mitsubishi MU-2, as well.

That's not a ship for the raw, the new, the inexperienced.

Business Jet speeds on pattern, approach and landing, and with some VERY unique Advisories as to engine out procedures in the pattern and landing.

Given his dexterity on the strings, I expect the MU-2 wasn't much of a challenge to him. And it wasn't.

He died of old age and illness, not in a smoking crater of another MU-2 crash.

This is a 4r70w. A rework of the old AOD, with electronic shifting. Problem is mainly parts, and lack of experience on my part, compounded by less-than-perfect documentation. I have the ATSG "Techtran" manual in front of me, and it neglected to mention the snap ring to hold the rear band up, and it also neglected mention a tiny anti-rattle spring clip that gets shoved into a slot between the intermediate clutch plates and the case.

Neither one is hard to install, but both just fell out as I was tearing it down, and their proper installation is far from obvious on sight.

The next one I do, perish the thought, will be a piece of cake.

Can you not apply for accident forgiveness? I notice some companies are advertising it now.

If I were hiring drivers, I would regard years of experience and a drug-free lifestyle as more important than a minor non-injury at-fault accident.

You run some combinations of "Roy Clark" and "MU-2", and you'll get some stories.

The man was an accomplished pilot. Read of what his instructors *and* FAA check pilots said of his skills.

"Good Hands" is prominent in those descriptions.

They said that also of Arnold Palmer in his Lear Jet days.

He died of old age and illness, too.

Payne Stewart died of hypoxia and poor maintenance and fuel starvation and subsequent impact with the ground.

But mostly, hypoxia.

Mitsubishi lobbied HARD to get the thing Type Rated, and the FAA refused, because it wasn't a Jet, nor a large, heavy turboprop such as a King Air or Swearingen.

That lack of a Type Rating lead to a great many deaths from inadequate training as to that airplane's foibles and quirks.

Great damn plane. I mean that. Very UPPER right corner of the envelope performance, but manageable.

With the right training, which a Type Rating would have required.

Sometimes, the FAA fucks up.

They did so with the MU-2.

Side note. You'd have enjoyed conversations with both high-hour pilots at this October's Mo Meet, as well as a very SENIOR design, development and test engineer of a very large airframe aviation company I will not here name.

Watching sumo on TV at the hotels the past 2 weeks, starting to get some of the rules strategery and rituals.

A Georgian (republic, not state) just lost to a Japanese wrestler. Between bouts, which tend to be brief, guys parade around the small ring, like "card girls" at boxing events ..... just, less scenic, natch.

751 Skip, actually up your alley, today went to the Takenaka carpentry museum in Kobe, Japan.

Extremely well done.

Traces development of woodworking tools/techniques in Japan from the Stone Age, and of course there is a lot to talk about as Japan saw amazing carpentry for many centuries before "modern" tools existed.

There were excellent detailed exhibits on construction of famous temples/shrines. Complete tool sets from ancient master carpenters. The design and work, needless to say, on some of these massive wooden masterpieces are amazing.

As they say, if you ever get to Japan, this museum alone is worth the trip to Kobe (1 hour or less by train from central Osaka).

Japanese planes are "pull", AFAIK ours are mostly "push". One of the curious things I learned today. Only did half of the outstanding audio tour, which is detailed and perfectly executed. Expect to visit the place again in the future.

753 Actually pondering some saucy comment at passport control on return.

Along the lines of "why do we even have passport checks at the airport? Border not secure, massive catch/release sham with "asylum" seekers, lawless states and cities sheltering felon illegals, massive visa over-stay problem not being addressed. Why not save money, eliminate passport controls?"
