John Kasich: I STAND WITH FRANCE

Of coruse, the Son of a Mailman (Had you heard?) John Kasich can't wait to march under a foreign flag.

French President Emmanuel Macron's thinly-veiled shots at President Trump over the weekend won at least one hearty American "oui" -- from Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Mr. Kasich, a frequent critic of Mr. Trump, took to Twitter to second Mr. Macron's attack on "nationalism" at a speech Sunday marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

"@EmmanuelMacron is right," Mr. Kasich tweeted, going on to quote what the French leader said in front of Mr. Trump, who has taken much criticism as racist for calling himself a "nationalist."

As Trump pointed out -- probably correctly -- Macron is probably trying to increase his pitiful 26% approval rating (71% disapproving) by picking a fight with a foreign leader even less popular in France than he is.

But that doesn't stop Katshit from moving quickly to endorse a foreign impotentate.

Seems like Katshit is running for the Bill Kristol's Last Remaining Donors primary.

Ahoy -- or as they say in French, ohe'.

79 My willowed Linux rant from the last thread:

I loaded Mint on a W7 machine in a dual boot configuration, but the @#$%^&* Mint did not play nice. It screwed up inter alia my network settings, so a lot of things no longer worked in W7. Took me most of an afternoon to find and fix all the things Mint had changed.

I have two big problems with Linux.

1. Any time I want to do a non-standard thing, I try the obvious thing, Linux breaks, and it takes me a week of research to find the super-cryptic CLI command to fix it. I hate that.

2. Linux is a hodge-podge of design philosophies written by a ton of enginerds who have no interest, experience, or talent at design.

There's a reason Apple products "just work" for Apple people. That reason is Apple has a unified design philosophy and anyone who has used Apple for a while will feel like any unknown piece of software is INTUITIVE. It's not really intuitive, it's simply conformant to Apple design philosophy. The end result is Apple people can try a few things that have worked for similar problems in the past and the solution will probably be in those places they will think to look.

Linux is nothing like this.

Linux-heads can spit out "closed source" and "walled garden" and "Apple peeps are told how to think" arguments all they want, but at the end of the day, having an intuition for how to solve problems in a new piece of software is both comforting and extremely productive. CLI commands with archaic command flags and extremely forgettable executable names simply do not compare.

93 The entire contemporary left, and the whole concept of a "peace movement" and a "borderless world" -- began with WWI. People tend to forget that. Eveyone focuses on how WWII changed our world -- and change it it did -- but WWI was equally important. Because WWI was the final war fought "for no good reason." That is to say, it was the last war ignoted and conducted without any underlying ideology motivating either side. What exactly did Germany or France "stand for" in WWI? Nothing. In WWII, in contrast, it was very clearly defined that the Axis stood for totalitarianism, while the Allies stood for democracy. coughStalincough. Well, you know what I mean, at least. In theory.

There was a huge outpouring of anti-war books, poems, articles, novels, etc. after WWI, which launched the way the modern left still thinks.

Macron was re-iterating the feeling that emerged in 1918 -- a feeling which is now ludicrous and irrelevant. Kasich is equally a century out of date, trapped in Belle Eppch utopian fantasyland.

107 OT - Is it typical in a 'recount' to co-mingle all ballots in a county rather than keeping them sequestered into their precinct boxes and class (early, mail in, etc). Because based upon video Broward has lumped them all together.

In contrast - Michigan kept all ballots segregated in the original ballot boxes.

Hah - to impede any possibility to detect any 'compromised' ballot boxes of course.

179 Reposted from an afternoon thread:

392 Nationalism is people of every different race and religion united in one nation they love. It is as appropriate as families are. Do you parents want to live in a commune where your beliefs, traditions, child rearing styles, and family history become a generic meaningless blend of 29, 000 other families? Of course not. You value your family roots and traditions and history and you do it without devaluing anyone elses.

If you thought Nationalism had anything to do with white supremacy or hate its time to walk away from the mainstream news and dunk your head in a vat of dumbass remover.

p.s. for Pete's sake, study American history and learn why there is so much to protect and be proud of here. Enjoy your life here. Or continue to walk around an amazing country being outraged with every damn thing it does but being unable to articulate why (in which case, please refer to vat mention in paragraph 2).

Carry on.

194 The best part about WWI is that it brought the last Muslim Empire -- the Ottoman Empire -- crashing down forever. People forget that, before 1917, the West was always rivaled by this or that Muslim Empire, glowering at the civilized West from outside the ramparts, waiting for a weakness. Once the Ottomans collapsed, the Muslims have been discombobulated and at each others' throats in internecine battles for a solid century. Which I personally regard as A Good Thing. Better that than a unified Muslim world -- which is what both Al Qaeda and ISIS tried to resurrect.

For example, Levin disagreed with Trump's declaration of being a nationalist, but unlike Kasich, Levin is fair with his criticism and at least backs up his position somewhat logically. Even when I disagree with Levin, it's not a grating, supremely annoying experience.
It also helps that Levin will turn right back around and defend Trump against the many ridiculous claims and abuses. It's obviously not a personal grudge - compared to Kasich who comes across as a bitter little worm.

It carries a different meaning in Europe because their political architectures (and cultures) are all distinctly different from ours.

In America, we never even used the word - except for people who wanted more centralized power to try and turn our federal government into a national one. The only reason it was even introduced in this last campaign was because of the Eurotrashphile America-hating lefties, here. But it's really a European concept and has no real analogue here.

He lives on the street a block over from me.

In the year we moved into the new house, my neighbors would hit golf balls from their front yard into the undeveloped land next door, down the street, and send their daughters to fetch golf balls (they were about 10 and 12 at the time). So Kasich is about a par 3 from my house.

Some years ago, we went out to eat at Wendell's, and he and his buds were in the booth next to us. I was literally about 12 inches from his back, on the adjoining booth. And there was a plain clothes State Trooper sitting at the bar, as his security.

He actually is pretty goofy, close up. I used to admire him as a congressman, but he's gone off his rocker.

These snowflakes say that about all of the tech companies.

Because they're very merit based -- if you don't hit your metrics, you eventually get fired

Yes, that can be stressful if you suck at your job or don't put in the hours.

But then again, you're also getting paid very, very well, and if you don't like your "work-life balance," you are free to take a pay cut and work somewhere else.

I have several friends at Amazon (and other tech companies) who bitch and moan about these snowflakes (mostly women) who are constantly whining about how demanding their jobs are.

Like, yeah, you're making $250,000 a year. You're expected to work more than 40 hours a week. That's kind of a given at that salary level.

In any case, I think I got what Trump was saying and understood what Levin was saying... Not a big deal to me. Just a matter of semantics as I took it.

277 snowflakes say that about all of the tech companies.

It worked for a good long while ... until 2003 when the EU decided to play around with Turkey and told them that they had to take supreme power away from the secular military, in their constitution, in order to be considered for EU membership (though the EU never intended to ever allow Turkey in, for good reason). But they just had to get their kicks screwing Turkey up and allowing the islamists to gain political power, again. yay!!

That part I can believe. I worked in sales for a certain Bay area router and switch company you might have heard of in the early days of the internet. My customers were the original backbone providers of the internet and they built it on the fly.

It was going so fast they got their own code development team at HQ and new code was recompiled on a weekly basis, sometimes more, just to support the changes from the constantly changing demand.

It was a hoot and I got to see some incredible things and meet some amazing people but the pace was like nothing I've seen before or since. And I've done a bunch of startups since.

French translations of Shakespeare's plays are pretty funny too. He was natural and sublime, but he had not so much as a single spark of good taste, or know one rule of Drama. I will now hazard a random, but, at the same time true reflection, which is, that the great merit of this Dramatic Poet has been the ruin of the English Stage."

396 2 years at amzn (or Google) is equivalent to 10 years experience somewhere else.

Yeah, but it will take ten years off of your life.

I was heavily recruited by Amazon and was offered some serious coin as an architect to do integrations with their suppliers.

I remember touring the workplace and saw the third world working conditions. Bright fluorescent lights and the crappiest hardware on what appeared to be outdated Ikea furniture. Stuffed into a room with the desks organized in strict rows. Window blinds down.

To get back into that area, there was this depressing lobby. The building is new, but they managed to get a decorator that was skilled in Impoverished Freshman Dorm Room decor. The lifeless souls with dead eyes behind the lobby desk was depressing. The turnstyles between the lobby and the work area that had a fat TSA drop-out making sure that all thirty cameras scattered around the room would fully record your presence.

So you make a lot of cash but spend 90% of your waking hours in that depressing place surrounded by others condemned to a work-only lifestyle.

There is a quality of life issue that overrides all of that. I declined and they acted shocked.

(they still keep trying to recruit me back)

402 I've worked for a small business for almost 30 years. I can't even imagine what it's like to work for a corporation like Amazon.

Yes, you can make much more money at Amazon. But the stress must be through the roof and you constantly have to worry about not making your targets and getting fired.

You don't make as much money at a small business. But if you find a place where your personality meshes with the owner and your co-workers, nothing can beat it. There is a real sense of "we're all in it together" and if you can learn your job well enough to become indispensable, you need never worry about being fired. You might have to sweep the floor or clean the toilet now and then.

Small businesses used to be the backbone of the American economy, but I see them dying away as corporations and/or government swallow up everything in their path.
