Pretty
Scenic
Soothing
Cold
Desolate

desperately struggling to claw off a lee shore to avoid shipwreck on the rocks
then wrecked, tossed into frigid waters, drowning in heavy clothing.

Oh those poor people!

I grieve to leave my comrades all
And my aging parents whom I've always hold so dear
And the bonny, bonny lass that I do adore

Farewell to Nova Scotia, the sea bound coast
Let your mountains dark and dreary be
For when I'm far away on the briny ocean tossed
Will you ever heave a sigh or a wish for me

The drums they do beat and the wars do alarm
The captain calls, we must obey
So farewell, farewell to Nova Scotia's charms
For it's early in the morning I am far, far away

Farewell to Nova Scotia, the sea bound coast
Let your mountains dark and dreary be
For when I'm far away on the briny ocean tossed
Will you ever heave a sigh or a wish for me

61 Farewell to Tarwathie
Adieu Mormond Hill
And the dear land of Crimmond
I bid you farewell
I'm bound off for Greenland
And ready to sail
In hopes to find riches
In hunting the whale

Farewell to my comrades
For a while we must part
And likewise the dear lass
Who first won my heart
The cold coast of Greenland
My love will not chill
And the longer my absence
More loving she'll feel

Our ship is well rigged
And she's ready to sail
The crew they are anxious
To follow the whale
Where the icebergs do float
And the stormy winds blow
Where the land and the ocean
Is covered with snow

The cold coast of Greenland
Is barren and bare
No see time nor harvest
Is ever known there
And the birds here sing sweetly
In mountain and dale
But there's no bird in Greenland
To sing to the whale

There is no habitation
For a man to live there
And the king of that country
Is the fierce Greenland bear
And there'll be no temptation
To tarry long there
With our ship under full
We will homeward repair

Posted by: Farewell to Tarwathie at November 14, 2018 09:44 AM (CDGwz)

62 I am so impressed with this artist. I had never heard of him but will do some research. The way he captured the texture and color of the ocean water, the cold mist gradually obscuring the land in the distance, the weathered look of the islet is all realistic without being photographic and conveys the feel of the time and place. The sailing ship in the background must have been a damn cold place to serve.

I've seen a few of his other paintings now and they share the sense of atmosphere that today's example shows. And that he accomplished some of this with watercolors is even more remarkable.

Thanks, CBD. Learning of new-to-me art and artists makes these threads so valuable.

113 Well, the shit is officially hitting the California fan this morning. PGE has disclosed today it may have some responsibility for the initial start of the "Camp" fire that has burned over much of Cali and killed some large number of people.

In anticipation of claims the company has drawn down all it's bank lines and alerted its insurers. Companies do these things when they are getting ready to weather financial storms that could kill them. California won't permit new power plants to be built and has significant restrictions on power infrastructure in place, and now looks like they may have to execute their largest power utility. The next few years could see some ....ahem.... "disruption" in the supply of electricity to the state. Like in Venezuela or other countries the President might describe as shitholes .

116 As long as we are on songs:
Oh In eighteen-hundred and-forty-four
Of March the eighteenth day
We hoisted our colours to the top of the mast
And for Greenland bore away, brave boys
And for Greenland bore away

The lookout on the mainmast he stood
His spyglass in his hand
"There's a whale, there's a whale, there's a whalefish" he cried
"And she blows at every span, brave boys
And she blows at every span"

The captain stood on the quarter deck
The ice was in his eye
"Overhaul, overhaul, let your jib sheets fall
And go put your boats to sea, brave boys
And go put your boats to sea"

The boats were lowered and the men aboard
The whale was full at view
Resolved, resolved was each whalerman bold
For to steer where the whalefish blew, brave boys
For to steer where the whalefish blew

The harpoon struck and the line paid out
With a single flourish of his tail
He capsized our boat and we lost five men
And we did not catch that whale, brave boys
And we did not catch that whale

The losin' of those five jolly men
It grieved out captain sore
But the losin' of that sperm whale fish
Now it grieved him ten times more, brave boys
Now it grieved him ten times more

"Up anchor now" our captain he cried
"For the winter stars do appear
And it's time that we left this cold country
And for the England we will steer, brave boys
And for the England we will steer"

Well, Greenland is a barren land
A land that bears no green
Where there's ice and snow and the whalefishes blow
And the daylight's seldom seen, brave boys
And the daylight's seldom seen

You don't understand. It's not sloppy work. It's intentionally skewing the numbers so they fit a narrative. Everything they do is exactly on purpose. This is not a mistake. This is their standard response when somebody actually takes the time to grind their numbers and finds they are bulls#it. And they find that every time. There is nothing even resembling real, actual science when it comes to "Global Warming."

Four-Feet

("THE WOMAN IN HIS LIFE")

"I have done mostly what most men do,
And pushed it out of my mind;
But I can't forget, if I wanted to,
Four-Feet trotting behind.

Day after day, the whole day through --
Wherever my road inclined --
Four-feet said, "I am coming with you!"
And trotted along behind.

Now I must go by some other round, --
Which I shall never find --
Somewhere that does not carry the sound
Of Four-Feet trotting behind."

The Fleischmann-Pons and Wolfe-Simon fiascoes are examples. The Sokal Affair was an indicator of how eager some communities are to seek/accept confirmation bias without any thought or examination at all.

I read the PG+E lines and a failing transformer sparking may actually be
the cause. Our electric grid infrastructure in this country is so past
its expected life it's scary that it still works at all. But.. as long
as it works, it doesn't need fixing, right?

Posted by: IP at November 14, 2018 10:19 AM (dM3St)

There is nothing wrong with out electrical grid other than some parts of the country don't want any of it near their property. They believe in magic. CA and the NE do have a severe problem though. Anytime it gets abnormally hot or cold their wires are overloaded because they have to import so much electricity from other parts of the country.

I told this story the other day. SF had an article about a 65 year old woman who was wakened in her trailer outside Paradise by her smoke alarms going off. She grabbed her three small dogs and got into her car, started driving out of the area until she came to a tree down across the road. She got out , left the dogs in the car and ran down an embankment and got into a stream, where there were two other people sitting. She said she had to keep dipping her hair under so embers falling wouldn't catch her hair on fire. She was sure she was going to die. When the fire passed , and fireman arrived, they fished the three of them out of the stream. Her dogs survived in her car and she is now in a shelter with her dogs and her pajamas, which is all she has left.

This fire was so wind driven that there was virtually no warning.

350 332 It seems every decade the political elites in Europe talk about an integrated military force. So one is cobbled together and just might work until funding is discussed. Then it all falls apart.

Why bother? WE are the European military. God forbid they should cut off funding for free tuition and guaranteed income and this and that just to defend themselves. Let Yanks and Canucks and Brits do the dying.

If we think of how the U.S. was "not prepared" going into the major wars in our history, it's a simplified thing to say we were not ready, but we were, because we bred men who could be enlisted, trained, and sent to fight in a relatively short period of time.

What a difference 28 years makes.
My unit deployed from Germany for Desert Shield/Storm. Before we left, the mayor of Augsburg held a wonderful reception for the Commander and staff and the troops had a special farewell party. While we were there, we received regular letters from the mayor telling us of the continuing security for our families. And upon our return there was a hell of a Fest in town. The Germans were fantastic.

434 Very interesting backstory to the JJS link this morning on Morning Report, covering the Orson Welles movie newly released on Netflix.

It seems this is a huge movie, and critics are going slightly nuts. It was originally scheduled to be entered into the film competition at the Cannes festival, but Netflix withdrew all their films, including the Welles film. Cannes has a new rule requiring all festival films get a French theatrical release, and France has a law requiring films shown in French theaters not be streamed until a three year delay is completed.

The whole idea is to maximize French theater owners revenues, I guess. Anyway, Netflix, which makes a lot of films now and paid for the completion of the Welles film (and supposedly did a fantastic job according to the critics), said "screw you! Our business is streaming, not theater revenue enhancement", so they wouldn't do what Cannes wanted on French theatrical release and avoided French legal restrictions.

So the movie didn't get a shot to win the Palme d'Or but French Netflix subscribers can see it right now, without a fake three year delay. Netflix subscribers are happy, and Welles family hoping for more honors for old Orson are not. Thank the French. Again.
