This Is a Thing: Young Black People Listening to Old White Rock Music For the First Time

This is a big YouTube genre, believe it or not. It's slightly addicting.

Here are some quick observations:

1, most of these channels of black people listening to white rock songs feature them listening to the whitest, really, of rock songs. They love Queen, for example. And Rush. And they really really love Pink Floyd.

2, some of these guys are very honest about whether or not they'e actually heard these songs before or if this is truly a First Time listening. The guys from Lost in Vegas, for example, are scrupulous about letting you know if they've heard this song in a commercial or something, or telling you, 30 seconds into listening, "Yeah, I've heard this before, I just didn't know what it was called."

Other people aren't quite as scrupulous about this. I kind of don't believe some of these guys that they've never heard Bohemian Rhapsody before, given that it was big in Wayne's World, or, if they're too young for that (and many are), was ubiquitous in the Suicide Squad ads. Certainly they must have heard at least part of it during that period.

3, sometimes I think these guys be playin', pretending they like the songs more than they do, because they'll get more clicks for liking a song. Again, I like the guys who seem more honest, sometimes really liking a song, sometimes saying "it's a'right," sometimes saying "Eh I didn't love that."

Below, some of my favorite Black People Listening to White Rock videos.

This was the first guy in this genre I listened to. He's got great reactions, and my God, does he love Pink Floyd and Queen more than any suburban white kid.

Sometimes I think this guy might be laying it on a bit thick, but I think he's mostly genuine.

I think he was born the wrong color. Man, is he a freak for Pink Floyd. He would later listen to every track in The Wall, which inspired me to listen to it front-to-back again myself a few times.

Here are the Lost in Vegas guys listening to Motorhead's Ace of Spades. They show a trope of this type of video, where they try to analyze the lyrics, usually thinking there's some metaphor to be found, before realizing, "Oh, there's no metaphor at all, he's literally just saying he needs the Ace of Spades to win the hand."

I love this one from the Lost in Vegas guys: Led Zeppelin's When the Levee Breaks.

The funny thing is, they keep saying -- apologetically, not wanting to piss off their white viewers -- "Guys, this is actually a blues song, it's not just pure rock and roll, we don't want to upset you, but this is black blues song."

Meanwhile, we white Zeppelin fans are thinking: Yeah, we know it's a black blues song, there's a legal judgment declaring that it's a black blues song -- Led Zeppelin were sued for cribbing the lyrics for this one from an old bluesman.

But they're really apologetic about letting their white fans know this is black blues. It's kind of cute.

This is a great one because Man, do they love this one when they start hearing the drums and blues harmonica.

Lost In Vegas guys listen to Rush 2112. I mostly listened to this to see if they could get me to like 2112, which I don't like and don't get. They didn't. They try to like it, but I'm not sure they really do. Which is pretty much my take, too.

I think this one is my favorite.

This is an example of a guy who is really expressive when he's listening to a song, which is fun, and seems honest, not just pretending.

He's listening to Bohemian Rhapsody. All black-guys-listening-to-white-rock youtubers must listen to Bohemian Rhapsody. Usually it's their entry into the field.

But here's why it's great: Can you remember the first time you heard this song, and it started to get really really silly, and you were like, "What the fuck is this stupid bullshit?"

Well, I think this is really this guy's first listen, because in the beginning he's digging it, and then the song starts to get, well, out there, and his reaction is honest, or else he's just a great actor.

What I think he's thinking is: ,"Are you White People putting me on with this nonsense?! "

BTW, he accidentally has picked a video where they just play the song twice in a row, which he doesn't know at first. Point is, once you hear the song once, that's really it, because the rest of the video is him just listening to a copy of what he just heard.

If you watch just one of these, watch this one. When he gets to The Part.

Anyway, if you like those, your YouTube sidebar should be quickly populated by the hundreds of other videos in this genre. The Lost in Vegas guys, by the way, are the most wide-ranging in their sampling, and don't just stick to British progressive rock; they also listen to country (including Jolene, for example, and of course Johnny Cash) and super-hard metal, like Gojira. (They're where I heard that Gojira song for the first time.)

So, I'll watch bohemian rhapsody where he's like what the fuck, that sounds what Queen was going for anyway

Side note, some of the best entertainment available is listening to a scanner if you live in an area where you can still listen to your local LEO. Just heard: "Two females in Popeye's Chicken uniforms. The fled the scene."

18 Having seen the Bohemian Rhapsody movie a couple nights ago, Queen started off as an Aryan band (it's funny because the Balsara family are literally ancestral Persians /ben) but Another One Bites The Dust did, in fact, take cues from black music.

Although Queen were already mega famous by then for doing operatic / prog anthems, and camp.

21 I don't get the "born the wrong color line." Music is one of the only constants that has bridged people of all stripes for many years. You like what you like. I like every genre of music except for opera and whatever passes for newer hip hop. (The older stuff at least had a beat and wasn't bad) It's cool that people of all walks like other stuff as well. To each their own.

26 It's not uncommon to see a young black dude (or girl) in a Pink Floyd, Metallica, or Iron Maiden shirt these days.

I actually think a heavy metal concert is one of the most diverse crowds you'll see these days. At least some of the small/medium size gigs I've been to. Certainly more diverse than a Hillary Clinton campaign office or CNN newsroom. And everyone is there to have a good time, no one cares about your skin color or nationality.

Yet the music media pans heavy metal as a white genre.

Go figure.

186 Yeah I found these a couple weeks ago. All three of the guys videos ace shows I've seen their reactions to this as well as Johnny Cash.

They are basically doing what others have done. There's a channel called Fine Brothwra Entertainment or FBE maybe now. They also own React. One of their video genres is having kids teens or old people listening to various music. They even got a bit of a backlash by trying to basically copyright reaction videos like that.

I assume there is a way to challenge/examine/trash the phony ballots????
***

My understanding is that they hold back real ballots from actual voters in Dem strongholds and replace them with fraudulent ballots...so the "found" ballots will come up as real when they introduce them later.

Not sure how you stop that...
The SoS in AZ is a hardcore GOPer so likely we are f*cked.

188 Reposting from the previous thread, it's too good. Actually the good stuff starts around 21 or 22 minutes.

I hope Ace can post the Obama video here. And there. And everywhere.

428 I hope this doesn't get willowed too soon, but EVERYONE should check out today's Klavan show. The part that matters starts about 29 minutes. He precedes it with the Acosta incident, and then the Tapper-Acosta interview. (And for once he doesn't suck up to Tapper.)

That's worth watching, but what matters is the tape of The One throwing a reporter out for being disrespectful, followed by the press corps chanting "Obama! Obama!" in support.

This needs to be seen more. I hope Ace puts it up, and every other conservative site. Everyone on Twitter (of course you'll get banned.)

Really, it's must see.

i think it was both a sample, a cover, and a collaboration with Tyler and Perry.

Funny thing is -- NEITHER BAND WANTED TO MAKE THAT RECORD! THEY BOTH THOUGHT IT WAS STUPID!

A producer basically bullied them into doing it.

2004 WA Gubernatorial election between Rossi and Gregoire.

1st count - Gregoire loses by 300 votes.
RECOUNT!

Oh wait, we found some votes in a closet. And a bunch of absentee votes got incorrectly rejected.

2nd count - Gregoire loses by a few dozen votes.
RECOUNT!

Oh wait, we found some votes in the trunk of a car. And somehow during the last recount some Rossi votes were mysteriously spoiled with marks in areas there shouldn't be marks. It's a mystery!

3rd count - Gregoire wins!
That's it boys, pack it in. No more recounts.

I'd also like to rewatch clips of the journolists when they went on and on over whether another guy's tough question was "disrespectful."

We need to hammer it in what lying propagandists they are. Whenever possible, confront them with it. (Another good one was election night 2016, when Tapper let slip "We need Pennsylvania." Mr Straight up the middle.)

But at least confront those conservatives (or "conservatives") who claim we're overstating. Nuke 'em.

Posted by: ace at November 08, 2018 07:37 PM (PbpT7)

Then you have a lot of dumb commenters, LOL.

I remember several years ago during a company retreat. First we got some really cool old school music (60s, mostly white stuff) and then they just had to switch to all Beatles all the time because the VP was a huge fan. I love dancing and had danced throughout to the other music. But I couldn't take the Beatles music so I left the dance floor. And I LOVE dancing.

That's when I learned that white folks like them some Beatles, because the previously half empty dance floor suddenly became packed.

It sounds like annoying baby music to me.

308 That's cool ace. I can relate on the election shit. Just confused being outta the loop today.
However..
Love Queen, hate the fuck outta bohemian rhapsody.
Not a Floyd fan per se but love comfortably numb and the song dark side of the moon.
I listen to a wide assortment of music from classical and opera to classic rock, motown, jazz, big band, pop, blues, almost anything really. I can listen to some rap but not much.
Hate blue grass, and most country music. But i can usually find something i like in any genre and even by artists I detest.
For example I loathe the Beatles and every person in that shitty band but I love the song live and let die.
Detest Willie Nelson, Love whiskey river.
Hate Rush, Lee's voice is like a black and Decker corded drill. Still like roll the bones and cold fire.
I don't like Johnny Cash but like the song ring of fire.
I dont care for country music but still think Pasty Cline had a wonderful voice and Martina McBride as a killer set of pipes. I still like the Statler Bros.
I have a bit of everything in my music collection.

336 Sorry. I just really, really hate autotune.

My young son watches a kid show called "Daniel Tiger". It's basically Mr Rogers' Neighborhood animated. The little boy tiger learns little lessons and they always have a jingle to sing about the lesson.

The most horrible part is the freaking voice actor they have playing the Mama Tiger can't sing a damn note. They have to auto-tune the crap out of her voice.

It's maddening. It's not like voice actors are hard to find. Get one who can sing a note without the autotune crutch.

Yes. Ike didn't want it because it was white music. Tina saw the potential.

All of music is a conversation. I'm in the middle of the Gimme Shelter video. The Stones were inspired by black American blues which was being forgotten in America. They got America to respond to it.

There really is no black or white music, it's all a back and forth.

Not to offend any Canadians, but Rush never mastered the ability to write a radio song. There are a couple that are OK, but some of their songs have ambiguous and impenetrable lyrics (Really, Today's Tom Sawyer gets high on you, and the space he invades he gets by on you??), plus so many of their songs are like "Well, we've got three songs here. Why don't we just jam them all together in related keys. A beginning, middle and end. Hey, that's all you need for a song." They were good technical musicians but would have lead fills that had no relation to the previous and following music line.

Posted by: Anonymous White Male at November 08, 2018 07:36 PM (3sjI6)

Where do they get these votes? They make them up. Democrats have always been very creative that way. It's their real superpower. And once again, the Republicans have no good answer. (One thing I have to give to GW Bush and Rove; they actually beat it. That's about it, especially Rove. But they did.)

In SW VA, in the 70s, they made a new courthouse. When demolishing the old one, they found thousands of votes which would have swung a D primary. Oopsie.

And, back then, the rest of VA was fairly honest, as was MN. The eternal sewers were places like NYC and Chicago. But now, it's all over the nation.

That is exactly backwards. The Beatles are important because they changed everything.

Was "Love Love Me Do" catchy? Sure. Was it important? No.

What's important is that they went from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to "Helter Skelter" in about three years.

And all of Sergeant Pepper and all of Abby Road, and all the stuff like Magical Mystery Tour that no one even listens to. Heck, I think they got to Revolver by 1965.

The Beatles changed everything and set the paths for everyone else to follow and keep exploring.

(btw, I say this as a committed Stones guy).

436 One of my favorite things is listening to Japanese people sing "Country Roads". There was a link to a video by Goose House on American Digest Then I discovered other videos. And there's a nice video of John Denver singing the song on a Japanese show, with a Japanese performer with a great voice. I think that's what started it.

441 >>>do the backup musicians, say the violinists and cellists in the background of a Supremes recording, share in residuals?"

no way, i don't think sessions musicians get a cut even today unless they're a name. I think sessions musicians just get paid for the session.

Back in the time of the Supremes, especially in Motown, I think, I think even above the name talent had trouble getting paid a percentage. I have a fuzzy memory of a Berry Gordy being a real sonofabitch about paying people.

455 i think when people say they hate the beatles they are largely thinking of Sgt Pepper, to be honest.

I don't really like that album. Well, a song here and there. but the praise for it is way out of proportion to its (current day) listenability.

yeah at the time, I'm sure, mindblowing. but a lot of seminal stuff dates really fast.

Posted by: ace at November 08, 2018 07:59 PM (PbpT7)

456 That is exactly backwards.

497 I can remember hearing Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time on the radio, and thinking "What the Fuck?" Then slowly, impenetrably it goes from pure cheese to something sublime.

It's overrated, but its big and bold and completely bonkers, and that what makes it great. Too much music today is afraid to go there - somewhere new and different and edgy and wild.

Even today, decades later, what other song is remotely like it?

I tell my kids the definition of good music, really good music, is that you hear it, and immediately know who made it, no doubt. Not only that, but years later, you can hear an unknown song by the same artist and immediately place it. So much rap, R&B, and pop music miserably fails that test - it could be by anyone. It could get remade and sound exactly the same.

Queen? Crashing guitars with the big Brian May scream and Freddie Mercury. 2 seconds you know exactly what you are dealing with.

My favorite Pythons/George story is about the funding of Life of Brian.

The Pythons (Eric Idle) went to him for funding assuming he had Beatles money. He didn't. But he mortgaged his house to put up the money.

When they found out the Pythons asked him why he did it. "Because I wanted to see the movie".

They called it the world's most expensive movie ticket.

You mean Meredith Wilson's "Till There Was You."
It's from The Music Man.

Wilson's widow once said that they made more money off of that one Beatles cover than from everything else combined --- the play, the movie, the soundtrack, other covers, etc.

534 Even today, decades later, what other song is remotely like it?

There have been attempts at rhapsody, or at least shaking up one (long) song with many moods within it.
- Pale Saints' "Half Life Remembered"
- Ride's "Leave Them All Behind"
- Peter Gabriel's "Family Snapshot" (thanks Jeff B for reminding me of this one).
- New Order's "Crystal"

Smashing Pumpkins did a lot of this too.

I think Jeff B wins this one: Family Snapshot is the heir to Bohemian Rhapsody. And better than the original.

Unfortunately, they are pretty weak. You can get some really good Phono Pre Amps for 150 dollars or so.

Of course, you can also spend 10k on one. All depends on what you need from it.

But, for a basic Moving Magnet Cart, anything over 1500 or so is a bit of overkill. It's only until you get to Low Output Moving Coils that you will find any benefit to spending over 2k.

It's really pop/R&B/hip hop with some Nigerian influence.

no way, i don't think sessions musicians get a cut even today unless they're a name. I think sessions musicians just get paid for the session.

Back in the time of the Supremes, especially in Motown, I think, I think even above the name talent had trouble getting paid a percentage. I have a fuzzy memory of a Berry Gordy being a real sonofabitch about paying people.

710 >>698 I remember the interview on the podcast. (It's the same guy, right?)

yeah, funny thing: I was deliberatelyh avoiding talking about politics because I always worry that entertainers don't want to be associated with politics, because it could get them into trouble or alienate audience.

Afterwards I found out he was disappointed; he said, "I thought we were going to talk about politics and he didn't ask about it."

711 yeah, another doc on session players showed how some guy in Nine Inch Nails was like "what's up, trent, you got a house and I'm living in my mom's basement..." trent was all like "uh start a band, sucker"

In the last few years Bob Dylan has recorded several albums of old standards from that era. In one interview, he said, "I'm not covering those songs, I'm uncovering them." Which I take to mean that he is trying to expose them to newer generations.

For example, I like this one (1941 original):

Show me a home,

Where the kids scratch and shout,
the dog barks to go out,
a typical, american, scene.

It is addictive, but there are some interesting reactors, one of whom heard the Righteous Brothers for the first time, "You've lost that loving feeling." His face, when he realizes that the "dudes" are white, is priceless. He's known as the New Renaissance man, and I think his name is Ty Smith.
