This Is a Thing: Young Black People Listening to Old White Rock Music For the First Time
This is a big YouTube genre, believe it or not. It's slightly addicting.
Here are some quick observations: 1, most of these channels of black people listening to white rock songs feature them listening to the whitest, really, of rock songs. They love Queen, for example. And Rush. And they really really love Pink Floyd. 2, some of these guys are very honest about whether or not they'e actually heard these songs before or if this is truly a First Time listening. The guys from Lost in Vegas, for example, are scrupulous about letting you know if they've heard this song in a commercial or something, or telling you, 30 seconds into listening, "Yeah, I've heard this before, I just didn't know what it was called." Other people aren't quite as scrupulous about this. I kind of don't believe some of these guys that they've never heard Bohemian Rhapsody before, given that it was big in Wayne's World, or, if they're too young for that (and many are), was ubiquitous in the Suicide Squad ads. Certainly they must have heard at least part of it during that period. 3, sometimes I think these guys be playin', pretending they like the songs more than they do, because they'll get more clicks for liking a song. Again, I like the guys who seem more honest, sometimes really liking a song, sometimes saying "it's a'right," sometimes saying "Eh I didn't love that." Below, some of my favorite Black People Listening to White Rock videos.This was the first guy in this genre I listened to. He's got great reactions, and my God, does he love Pink Floyd and Queen more than any suburban white kid.
Sometimes I think this guy might be laying it on a bit thick, but I think he's mostly genuine. I think he was born the wrong color. Man, is he a freak for Pink Floyd. He would later listen to every track in The Wall, which inspired me to listen to it front-to-back again myself a few times.Anyway, if you like those, your YouTube sidebar should be quickly populated by the hundreds of other videos in this genre. The Lost in Vegas guys, by the way, are the most wide-ranging in their sampling, and don't just stick to British progressive rock; they also listen to country (including Jolene, for example, and of course Johnny Cash) and super-hard metal, like Gojira. (They're where I heard that Gojira song for the first time.)

I actually think a heavy metal concert is one of the most diverse crowds you'll see these days. At least some of the small/medium size gigs I've been to. Certainly more diverse than a Hillary Clinton campaign office or CNN newsroom. And everyone is there to have a good time, no one cares about your skin color or nationality.
Yet the music media pans heavy metal as a white genre.
Go figure.

I think it's just those are the ones that get the most hits and among the first of this type. So when someone decides to mimic this type of video, they do Bohemian Rhapsody.
A common thing is that these guys don't really know what songs they "should" listen to; their viewers suggest songs in the comments. Since they don't know which songs to listen to, they usually go with one they've seen other people do, which is Bohemian Rhapsody.

First we got some really cool old school music (60s, mostly white stuff) and then they just had to switch to all Beatles all the time because the VP was a huge fan. I love dancing and had danced throughout to the other music. But I couldn't take the Beatles music so I left the dance floor. And I LOVE dancing.
That's when I learned that white folks like them some Beatles, because the previously half empty dance floor suddenly became packed.
It sounds like annoying baby music to me.

Love Queen, hate the fuck outta bohemian rhapsody.
Not a Floyd fan per se but love comfortably numb and the song dark side of the moon.
I listen to a wide assortment of music from classical and opera to classic rock, motown, jazz, big band, pop, blues, almost anything really. I can listen to some rap but not much.
Hate blue grass, and most country music. But i can usually find something i like in any genre and even by artists I detest.
For example I loathe the Beatles and every person in that shitty band but I love the song live and let die.
Detest Willie Nelson, Love whiskey river.
Hate Rush, Lee's voice is like a black and Decker corded drill. Still like roll the bones and cold fire.
I don't like Johnny Cash but like the song ring of fire.
I dont care for country music but still think Pasty Cline had a wonderful voice and Martina McBride as a killer set of pipes. I still like the Statler Bros.
I have a bit of everything in my music collection.

My young son watches a kid show called "Daniel Tiger". It's basically Mr Rogers' Neighborhood animated. The little boy tiger learns little lessons and they always have a jingle to sing about the lesson.
The most horrible part is the freaking voice actor they have playing the Mama Tiger can't sing a damn note. They have to auto-tune the crap out of her voice.
It's maddening. It's not like voice actors are hard to find. Get one who can sing a note without the autotune crutch.

Not to offend any Canadians, but Rush never mastered the ability to write a radio song. There are a couple that are OK, but some of their songs have ambiguous and impenetrable lyrics (Really, Today's Tom Sawyer gets high on you, and the space he invades he gets by on you??), plus so many of their songs are like "Well, we've got three songs here. Why don't we just jam them all together in related keys. A beginning, middle and end. Hey, that's all you need for a song." They were good technical musicians but would have lead fills that had no relation to the previous and following music line.

(One thing I have to give to GW Bush and Rove; they actually beat it. That's about it, especially Rove. But they did.)
In SW VA, in the 70s, they made a new courthouse. When demolishing the old one, they found thousands of votes which would have swung a D primary. Oopsie.
And, back then, the rest of VA was fairly honest, as was MN. The eternal sewers were places like NYC and Chicago. But now, it's all over the nation.

I think it's a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony or something. And then Prince comes out for a solo. It's amazing and the look of on Harrison's son's face when Prince is playing is priceless.

no way, i don't think sessions musicians get a cut even today unless they're a name. I think sessions musicians just get paid for the session.
Back in the time of the Supremes, especially in Motown, I think, I think even above the name talent had trouble getting paid a percentage. I have a fuzzy memory of a Berry Gordy being a real sonofabitch about paying people.

And speaking of having British taste in music, I've always liked Brit prog bands, particularly ELP, Yes and King Crimson and Peter Gabriel. Only American band that came close was Kansas.
Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Stones, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Fleetwood Mac, all the British Invasion groups were pretty good. I'm listening to some William Orbit of late.

I tell my kids the definition of good music, really good music, is that you hear it, and immediately know who made it, no doubt. Not only that, but years later, you can hear an unknown song by the same artist and immediately place it. So much rap, R&B, and pop music miserably fails that test - it could be by anyone. It could get remade and sound exactly the same.
Queen? Crashing guitars with the big Brian May scream and Freddie Mercury. 2 seconds you know exactly what you are dealing with.

South Africa has always been the king of African music, IMO. Nigerian music just relatively recently became big, and like other things Africa like fashion and Nollywood, we have taken over. My Italian-American friend married a Kenyan several years ago and they played Nigerian music at the wedding, LOL.
But Congolese music is also very good. I also like some Senegalese stuff.

I'm reading now they make turntables now that have the phono/RIAA stage built in, so the output is standard line level.

Long story short, I had an MRI of my brain two weeks ago and they gave me a disc to take to the oncologist. I peeked at it on a computer at work. I'm not trained to interpret those things, but I didn't like what I saw.

Unfortunately, they are pretty weak. You can get some really good Phono Pre Amps for 150 dollars or so.
Of course, you can also spend 10k on one. All depends on what you need from it.
But, for a basic Moving Magnet Cart, anything over 1500 or so is a bit of overkill. It's only until you get to Low Output Moving Coils that you will find any benefit to spending over 2k.

Yep, America rules culture all over the world. We add our own beats (the beats are pretty Nigerian and similar to some Latin American and Caribbean stuff). Then we add pidgin, etc.
It's really pop/R&B/hip hop with some Nigerian influence.

We did a dance to it when I was in the 6th grade. (We used to put on plays and other productions. Mary Poppins, Sound of Music, the Mikado, and other mostly British classic movies/plays.)

no way, i don't think sessions musicians get a cut even today unless they're a name. I think sessions musicians just get paid for the session.
Back in the time of the Supremes, especially in Motown, I think, I think even above the name talent had trouble getting paid a percentage. I have a fuzzy memory of a Berry Gordy being a real sonofabitch about paying people.
