Gun Thread: Quarter-Ass Effort Edition [Weasel]

9.1 poptart 2.jpgStrawberry Frosted Pop-tart in .45ACP

So some crazy people invited me to a party in Texas this weekend, and by the time you read this Sunday evening I will either be relaxing at home, or sitting in jail. Whichever the case, I will almost certainly need to spend some time explaining to WeaselWoman exactly why we spent two days hanging out with such a collection of reprobates. But never fear - I'm making what can only be considered the absolute minimum effort now to pull together some gun thread content before heading to the airport.

Content!
I guess we need some content, so let's experiment with posting video!

Some of you have seen this material before. The Uzi is a lot of fun to shoot, however, the hanging steel target turns out not to be the best choice with an automatic weapon as the front to back swinging requires frequent pausing while the target is reacquired. Still, if you get a chance to pick one of these up for cheap at a farmers market or in the parking lot of a gun show, by all means do. Also, buy lots of ammo. LINK to video

And speaking of targets, what do you use at the range? When I'm outside just shooting for fun I like steel because it's just fun to hit. If I'm outdoors practicing for a match, I use an electronic target, and we'll have more about this in a future thread. If I'm at an indoor range, I use a plain sheet of copier paper and draw a dot on it with a Sharpie, or use adhesive 1" dots in bright, contrasting colors. I've used the day-glo reactive targets and they work very well, but they seem a little pricey to me. How many of you use steel? What has your experience been with bullet splatter and ricochet?

*******

Astute commenter Mr. C. B. Dildo sends us the following video review of the Canik TP9SF Elite by Colion Noir on his First Mag video channel. It's worth your time, and I may include more of these from time to time when I'm too lazy to do the real work of writing semi-original content. LINK to video

OK, that was fun but now I'm tired of embedding videos, and I'm not entirely certain they're working, so I will just link the last one. Many of you will have seen this in the news, but these guys are simply acting too retarded for the Gun Thread to ignore. Retards at the Range I don't want to get hung up on this but it's just about the dumbest thing I have ever seen. While I have seen some pretty stupid things, never have I seen anything that approaches this level of stupidity. This is epic stupidity.

What's the stupidest thing you have seen at the range?

What's the stupidest thing you have done at the range?

***This Old Gun***

This weeks old gun comes to us from Lurker with a Musket who has absolutely nailed it for this week! I know a bunch of you are very knowledgeable when it comes to weapons of this era, and hopefully you can bitch slap us all with some knowledge on this particular gun.

9.3 musket scaled.jpg

9.4 musket scaled.jpgMusket courtesy Lurker with a Musket

Lurker with a Musket tells us:

This musket belonged to my great-great grandfather, Adolphus, who was in the 1st Regiment New York Mounted Rifles during the Civil War. I'm told it is an 1845 Towers (maybe Powers) but I'm skeptical of that claim because I can't find any information on that manufacturer. It looks a lot like the 1842 Springfield which is consistent with it's .69 caliber smooth bore although my father disagrees (I'd love to learn more if anyone can identify it). At the age of 15, Adolphus walked from New York to Richmond, VA where he enlisted. He eventually ended up marching under General Sherman during Sherman's March to the Sea. After being discharged, Adolphus then carried the rifle, which was taller than he was, all the way back to New York. We believe it was last fired on July 4, 1913. The ramrod was subsequently turned into a fishing rod which is in my possession. My father has the musket itself but has resisted all my attempts to convince, cajole, bribe, threaten or guilt him into giving it to me.

This is just cooler than shit. Thanks Lurker with a Musket!!

23 Thanks, Weasel, and esp for the autographed Deplorable Gourmets (with which we at the (5th annual!) Southwest Ohio MoMe raised almost $60 for the Family Research Council.

Question for The Horde: I've been looking at a widget called the iTarget Pro, which purports to help with aiming. Anyone familiar with this device, and/or opinions about it. It's a dry-fire excercise enabler.

TIA!

I don't think that guy was a POW. He is not listed on any of the Vietnam war POW lists.

There was a German Soldier who was a POW in the US during WWII "for a short time" who has a Wikipedia page for something else related to paper money. Same name. And one of the Dallas news articles I read, and the Wiki article, use similar terminology (see quotes above) to describe his time as a POW.

Posted by: Skip at October 21, 2018 07:31 PM (T4oHT)

48 What's the stupidest thing you have done at the range?

20/20 hindsight, of course.

After arrival at 2d Ranger Bn, I had to go through the Ranger Indoctrination Program. One of the numerous live fire we did exercises was an ambush. I got chosen to be the claymore guy.

I set myself up behind a fallen tree that was about 3 ft in diameter. The claymore was about 10 ft in front of that. Now, the distance is supposed to be 18 meters. But, I figure that big of a tree would stop fragments. Besides, I had my trusty earplugs.

Now back then, most mid-grade NCOs were Viet Nam combat vets. The SSG instructor that settled in next to me was such. He did not know where I put the claymore.

When I set it off, it felt like I was picked up and slammed back down. Prolly, not, but it sure felt like it.

The happy ending was it got me designated as a demolition guy in my platoon. The instructor looked at me and said, "Hey, you love that shit, doncha Ranger?" I was kinda dazed. I must've grinned and nodded.

Looked that way. Wonder if the weapon was retuned to them in operable condition. Or in three or four major pieces, depending on how it breaks down for cleaning.

Posted by: Weasel at October 21, 2018 07:36 PM (MVjcR)

60 I keep saying this on the gub thread, but this time it is freelz, and finalized.

I have my concealed carry figured out. I have finally landed on a deep concealment elastic shoulder holster. And after seeing how much the black one kept showing through dress shirts, I ended up with a white one.

Something I did not research a lot, and something that did not just pop up in the "so you want to carry" searches was that it would take a while to find the right combo of comfort, security, and concealment for EDC.

There is all this talk about IWB and OWB and all that, but we are all sort of shaped differently. And wear different attire.

The belly band reviews I saw were by people who were, well, trim. Trimmer than I, at least. The best I could do with the belly band was small of the back, and that was only kind of. Plus my belly band did not have a retention strap which resulted in a pop out at the grocery. Boy was my face red.

I tried using that in shoulder configuration, but had to make it too tight for comfort. So got shoulder one with a strap that goes over the shoulder.

This is the best location for me - I typically wear dress shirts and a sports coat to work, so excellent concealment, and yes it means I have to unbutton my shirt to get to my pistol, it is the best compromise.

And I am carrying a Keltec PF9! I canot imagine what I would do with a 1911!

A dedicated

Cool musket. Mrs Hades and I went to Colonial Williamsburg last year for our anniversary and the gunmaker shop there still makes muskets. Pretty neat process making the barrels out of flat iron and etc. BTW, they had a machine to rifle the barrels there, yes Virginia there were rifles way back then, not just smoothbores.

86 That musket looks like the Springfield 1842 as Lurker with a Musket suggests. The 69 caliber is correct for that model, it isn't a conversion of the 1816 flint to percussion (no sign of the conversion process), and it should be a smoothbore since there are no sights.

I know more about long guns of earlier eras but the 1842 would have been a very versatile firearm for civilian use. The 69 caliber round ball would take any game in North America. With shot you have the equivalent, roughly, of a 16 gauge shotgun for anything from squirrels to deer. Also, the musket was made with interchangeable parts, so repairs would have been easier.

Weekend after that: Family guntogether.

Then, November really get's going because: IDPA and M1 Garand match and Turkey Shoot. Hopefully, the M1 match won't interfere with Steel Challenge, but, sometimes, sacrifices must be made.

Someone pulled the PACER documents on other gun boards that included allegations of child abuse of a daughter that were apparently documented and presented to the judge. The indictment that he pled guilty to also included the fact that cocaine and marijuana was found in the house thus federal mandatory minimum sentence applied.

The thing started with the dude threatening hospital staff apparently and referring the Las Vegas incident and implying topping that. Search warrants and a tip then revealed the illegal M14 with defaced serial number. It is unclear whether or not it is selectfire from the reports.

The big problem with being behind the claymore isn't as much the blast as it is the steel plate that flies to the rear.

The 105s had been retired by the time I joined up, but we still had the M67 90mm up in Alaska (in lieu of the Dragon missile, which was a dangerous piece of shit). Seriously fun to shoot, especially with the flechette round.

Going on forced marches with that sewer pipe strapped to your ruck.... not so much.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at October 21, 2018 08:05 PM (vbvxt)

131 The M14 is select fire capable with certain select fire components installed. The M1A sold by Springfield is a cloned semi auto that has features making it very difficult to convert.

BTW, even having a select fire sear and certain other components (depending on the rifle/machine gun) without a stamp and BATF approval is liable for a jail sentence. This goes for the M16 as well.

The sears are registered parts and the Hughes Amendment froze the registry in the 1980's to new applicants on parts or firearms.

133 I agree, 1842 from the far-side serpent, or whatever it is called that holds the screws holding the lock-plate on from the opposite side. It is a hold over from the earlier flintlock muskets

Check to see if there is a hole drilled from the underside in front of the trigger guard, this was a hole driven to help drill out the stock for the lock. If this musket is a later modificaton of an 1816 musket or variant it should have that extra hole on the underside, but not if it is the '42 or later . . . . I think.

From the story:
"In exchange for Pick's guilty plea to the charge for which he was convicted, two other charges were dismissed: possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number."

He wasn't punished for the unlicensed machine gun nor the serial number but for having firearms with cocaine and marijuana. That is a mandatory sentence there.

172 Here's something from a recent range trip that maybe y'all will have some ideas about. I got a new (old) rifle, a Schultz & Larsen M-54 that has been rebarrelled in .308. I mounted a SWFA 16X scope. After sight-in, I was gettting 3/4 - 1 inch 5-shot groups at 100 yards with Federal 175 gr. Gold Match. I was pretty happy with that so I moved out to 200 yards and my groups opened up to 5 - 6 inches. I realize that group size isn't going to be linear with respect to distance but that was disappointing to say the least. I estimated the twist rate by pushing a tight patch down the bore and marking the rod with a sharpie. It came out to be roughly 14.5 inches. So I think it's just not fast enough to stabilize the 175s. I see that Sierra has some "Palma" Match Kings in 150 or 155. I haven't started handloading yet but I wonder if I need something like that instead of the popular 168 and 175 MKs. Open to other suggestions.

Posted by: Bob the Bilderberg at October 21, 2018 08:18 PM (cTajt)

173 I've got the Canik Tpsa9. For the price a very nice setup.

comes in a hard case with a hard type holser and two mounts for the holster for either paddle or belt. Also has 2 back straps to adjust the grip. And includes a 2nd magazine, a barrel brush and a manual loader.

All for $359 from Gander Mountain back in 2015.

Has decocker 2 loaded chamber indicators and 1 cocked indicator. there is a trigger safety but like most of these type guns, no positive safety. The slide latch is a bit tricky to grasp the slide as it's a bit small and close to the frame so you sometimes can't get it in place. Latch back on empty magazine. Has a rail below the barrel. Two steps to release the slide and barrel to clean. Can switch the magazine release to the opposite side. (think you'd better have a gunsmith do it. It's possible for dyi but tricky)

Over all I like it and I especially liked the price being 200 to 300 less than most Glock copies (actually this mimics the Walther ppq more so and can even accept their mags but those are more expensive)

Fired maybe 200-300 rounds with no misfires. YMMV

Original reporting claimed the guy bought the gun 30+ years ago and is going to jail for having buying a stolen weapon 30 years ago.

However, most recent reporting is saying the guy is one very bad dude that deserves to be locked away for a long time.

If it was just the gun and 30 years later, I'd think it was overly harsh.

206 I use a shoulder holster for both my 9mm and my .45 as I am a big guy (fat ass to you) and a hip carry prints and stomach carry or in the waistband is very uncomfortable (remember: fat. ass.)

I got the best shoulder holsters for the cheapest price by using a holster made for AirSoft.

I had to "adjust" so it wouldn't activate the magazine release and put velcro straps on them in a differing position than how they come from the Factory. They're secure they have straps to use your belt to keep them from flopping around and the straps keep them secure no matter how much twisting and bouncing you may do.

They're also real comfortable for driving and you can actually draw while seated.

Don't get sucked into a leather one. They're hot and they can deform over time and fold up and possibly engage the trigger. this has happened with belt carry leather holsters that are not well made for longevity.

232 I have no idea where I got that idea about the hole from, except I am an idiot. I went and finally looked at my pictures like an adult.

That musket looks like an 1842 Springfield except for the offside (right side) plate that supports the bolts that hold on the lockplate.

I have a picture of a Harpers Ferry 1854 in my picture archives that looks much the same, except for the offside plate/serpent (or whatever) on yours, that looks like it came off the 1816 flintlock.

It may be a conversion after all, that offside plate style was not the sort of thing that got used, but it wouldn't be modified in a refit. Even the picture of the 1841 Whitney I have has the straight offside plate, not the swelled one like yours.

The muskets had thinner barrels, and I have read that there was an attempt to shorten them and rifle the barrels to use a minee ball, which the troops considered dangerous.

I wonder if under need for arms, the older model muskets were gathered, and the stocks and fittings were used when the barrel and lockwork was replaced, and then given to cavalry since at the time they were supposed to be used for something other than fighting like infantry.

240 exdem13, if you're still here - shop used gunzzz.

Not sure exactly what you're looking for (you said Kimber ..... Taurus ..... High Point), but I'm assuming 1911, or other semi-auto handgun?

Unless you're in a remote area/very small town - and then there's GunBroker - shop the local online wanted ads. Many areas/states have local gun forums online with for-sale sections.

Most of my gunzzz are used - all but 2, actually.

Guns hold their value, when of quality and well cared for, much more than most "consumer" items. Yet - they also make good buys when used.

If you're not completely hung up on cosmetics, or something non-functional, and in you're in a decent sized market ..... used is the way to go for the budget buyer.

One final thought - Springfield XDs are excellent, and priced low to start with. I see them used (sometimes, barely used at all) for what I imagine your budget might be. All the time.

The caravan of thousands of Honduran migrants wending its way through Mexico has grown more stretched out in the blazing sun, evolving into long lines straggling for miles.

Mexican villagers have organized to offer them water, food and clothing. Dozens of Mexicans in pickup trucks have pulled over to let 10 or even 20 migrants hop in back.

One of the drivers is Jesus Valdivia, a resident of Tuxtla Chico, Mexico. He says it's important to help others: "Today it's for them, tomorrow for us."

267 Re 165
You are welcome. Part of the problem with our gun laws is that we have the NFA, the GCA, FOPA, the AWB, and so forth and then regulations off of these. I collect (really just accumulate) old WWI and WWII era surplus firearms and steer well away from any of the smg disassembled kits as these were mostly designed around an open bolt which is an instant no-no from the ATF. Bolt actions are almost impossible to convert and are relatively safe for now. Just not the importation of certain parts of them.

It is difficult to retrofit most of these to semi-auto without access to a machine shop. In a similar way, the whole AR pistol and uppers is legal right now via ATF regulations but could be an issue. For example, it is legal to convert a dedicated AR pistol lower to a rifle but not vice versa. Lots of gray area there to entrap those who are not careful.

Firearms laws and sentences are draconian and perhaps no agency has a greater power to tweak regulations and make a significant number of law abiding citizens into criminals via a change in agency regulations. BTW, NCIC background check is now recording Driver License numbers.

Lots of stuff went wrong in the Iowa incident. From what I remember there was some question about the powder being unstable because it was blended with older powder and the ram went in too far. I don't remember anything about the bags, but if they were switched from silk (which does not generate static electricity) to polyester (which would) that could conceivably be a contributing factor.

There weren't any more incidents like that until the battle wagons were retired, so I'm guessing the safety center investigation (which would have been different from the criminal investigation and aimed at finding causes to correct and not criminals to prosecute) found the reasons for the incident and corrected them. I do remember that the criminal investigators certainly did not cover themselves with glory, and in fact not soon after that they changed their name from NIS to NCIS.

310 For those confused by some of the nomenclature in firearms, here's another one.

There used to be something called a 'smooth rifle'. That sounds like a contradiction in terms but it was an accurate description. It was essentially a rifle with the proper shaped stock, sights, and barrel but the bore was not rifled. It was usually a smaller caliber than a shotgun, sometimes down to 32 caliber. The big advantage was it was less expensive than a full rifle. The rifling process was labor intensive and required extra tools.

It might have been less prone to fouling and easier to clean, but I'm not sure. If so, it would have been somewhat faster to reload.

This long ago English major still has a problem with the name.

That would make it a smoothbore, not a rifle. A rifle must have rifling in the barrel, otherwise it is not a rifle.

That is what caused the discussion on another forum. In this case, the rifle shape and configuration, vs. a shotgun or fowler shape provided the 'rifle' part of the name. And it stills sounds odd to me.

Turns out I have one. I had a drop-in barrel for a T/C Renegade 50 caliber reamed out to a smooth 62 caliber. Thus, a rifle with a smooth bore.

394 That is what caused the discussion on another forum. In this case,
the rifle shape and configuration, vs. a shotgun or fowler shape
provided the 'rifle' part of the name. And it stills sounds odd to me.

It should have sounded odd. The term "rifle" insists upon a rifled barrel, otherwise it's a smoothbore. The shape of the gun has nothing to do with it, and whoever insists otherwise is...misguided at best.

A shotgun, on the other hand, is designed to fire multiple projectiles, and because of the whole multiple projectile thing rifling would be...somewhat less effective. Unless you are shooting slugs, I guess.

There is this fantastic and comprehensive news thread to start the day. We do not mention that in the comments.

Then there is a picture of one of three different simians, a gorilla, a punk, pierced chimpanzee, or a gibbon. There is an epic rant against some world problem. We do not mention that in the comments.

Finally Ace wakes up, and there are incisive, topical, humorous, and sometimes savage commentary in a number of posts. We do not mention that in the comments.

The gun control group "Guns Down America" is asking citizens to send a text alerting authorities if they see an armed citizen near a polling area.

They suggest their request is made out of concern of the political climate under President Trump.

USA Today quoted Guns Down America director Igor Volsky saying, "Given the troubling political rhetoric we've seen over the last two years, and that guns are far too easy to obtain, this campaign will help the majority of Americans who believe that fewer guns keeps us safer fight back and cast their ballots free from fear of intimidation."

A shotgun with the barrel swapped out for a rifled one, firing saboted slugs, is a very common deer gun in flatter states. Some states don't allow rifles for hunting because of how far the bullet can travel past the intended target if it misses.

474 Late but so much content to read...

I had a good range day. I'm amazed at the XD9 to make tiny groups if I can focus. And I'm amazed at my inability to focus most times.

The 4" duty version doesn't seem to group well at 25 yards but at 45 feet or less, the gun is quality.

Speaking of, the Canik TP is one of the best value pistols out there today.

475 421 I just read an article about not counting Hillary out for a 2020 presidential run. Besides being batshit crazy, I don't she can physically handle another primary, let alone a presidential campaign.

She'll require one of those Rascals and an IV whiskey drip.if there's a party that needs some new blood, it's the Democrats.
====
Like Aerosmith said, dream on until your dreams come true. No, no, if the Hildabeast is still alive and coherent in 2020 it will be amazing, let alone her being the candidate. I hereby disqualify the Wicked Witch of Chappaqua for the following reasons.
1. She lost a "sure thing" election against a man with no prior experience who didn't have the support of his avowed party's leadership and network.
2. She is a senior citizen, and the active base of SJWs, the fighting antifa-hai, and Berniebots have no love for her.
3. She has some serious health problems, which will haunt her no matter how much $$$ is spent on health care.
4. She is an ungracious and ambitious person who never gives a compliment or is nice to the little people. So after two chances there will not be a third one.

476 How many toast their pop tarts vs. eating them raw?

Trying to get the thread to 500 again? Raw, because it's by definition a food of convenience.

477 Actually rifled barrels for shotguns are used for slugs. Which makes them large rifles, I guess, but that would be technically illegal since they are over 50 caliber, so for shotguns the BATFEIEIO has issued a ruling saying that if it was a shotgun and you just put a slug barrel on it, it is still considered a shotgun and not a "destructive device".

On Amazon Prime is interesting.

Big deal on women being oppressed. It does make some points, but is a lot of propaganda.

=====
Given as how the Democrat-Socialists and the fighting antifa-hai are the ones blaring the most troubling political rhetoric, Mister Volsky can tell them to shut their belligerent pieholes first. Then maybe we'll talk about intimidation-free elections.

495 Some time back my mother in law gifted me with a display rack that was originally meant for collectible plates. It has what looked to me like columns, reminiscent of train stations in eras past, so I use it to display my model trains.

This weekend while mucking about in thrift shops I came upon an identical display rack that was only half the width. Now I have to find room on my train room walls to mount it. I'm thinking N scale standard gauge in the wider one and N scale narrow gauge and Z scale in the smaller one.
