-----Going to be willowed but it may have been posted already but a Silver Star Vietnam Vet got a seven year prison sentence for having a fully auto M-14 he purchased from someone at a gun show in 1980. It was obvious that the gun was stolen as the serial number was scratched off but the guy foolishly bought it for his legitimate gun collection to just to display. Seven years seems a little harsh and by little I mean a lot. ---- And that painting can be replicated on Microsoft paint . Still I would hang that painting in my house . Gotta disagree with you on this one. Mrs VIA has two lap cats that once she breaks out the laptop or a book, will make every effort to block her field of view. If she moves the reading material, they will relocate tor e-block her view, and prevent her from reading. So yes....they do care if she can read or not. That's because your spellcheck knows you want a beer. I am by no means educated in art, but I think the test is whether it moves you emotionally or makes you think. "Oh, it's pretty" is dismissive. This guy is roughly contemporaneous with Picasso, and those guys were actively trying to change the way we see things. It worked. It's not possible to see thing in a pre-Picasso way any more. That's an achievement. Same applies to Warhol, Man Ray. We get a shit ton of drawings of perfect manners and religious allegory that just suck. There's no emotion in them. But that was the good old days when people knew how to draw. No. Art is supposed to provoke. Posted by: Bandersnatch at October 18, 2018 10:18 AM (fuK7c) 191

This work is from 1921.
At this time, art was undergoing a revolution. The Great War had really turned European culture inside-out, and those left behind were trying to figure out what had happened, even 4 years later. It was an apocalypse. Even though Cubism existed before WWI (created about 1911/1912), after the War, its flipping of the aesthetic table appealed to those who believed that Western Traditionalism was responsible and it had to be totally exposed and eradicated. Reducing the artistic elements to its most basic ideas: geometric shapes, primary colors, black & white was the visual representation of this idea. Society must be stripped bare and rebuilt on basic socialist principles. 166 I understand the criticism of a lot of what passes for modern art but Art / Painting is not just the technical ability to reproduce an exact copy of what we observe.
Posted by: Lancelot Link Secret Agent Chimp at October 18, 2018 10:14 AM (tqpcJ) Traditionalism agrees with this. A great artist back in the day was not great because he had good technical skill, it was because he could make is works seem alive. This is why the Royal Academies ranked and strictly enforced the genres. It is also why still-lifes were the lowest of them all. Skill just got you in the door. Willowed from The Morning Report:
511 240 "Greenfield: The Incredibly Fake End of Elizabeth Warren" The line that jumped out at me was this: Worse still, the legitimacy of the test depended on a theory that the Cherokee were descended from common ancestors who came to America over the Bering Strait, making them not fully indigenous. I guess I'm just ignorant, but I'd not heard that. What do they believe, then? That American Indians evolved separately from Old World homo sapiens? I guess anything is possible. Posted by: Eeyore, fomerly George LeS at October 18, 2018 08:50 AM (59GGI) I also found that line confusing at first. Here are several explanations: 1) Science shows that Asia and the Americas were connected several times for many thousands of years in recent geogical history. Traveling across the land bridge was merely an expansion, like traveling from Oklahoma to Kansas. 2) People emigrated from Asia to the Americas in waves over a long period of time. They often did not share the same genetics. Newer peoples often replaced older peoples. Thus, no one can really be said to be truly indigenous. Cat isn't actively interfering with the book. Interesting because as others have noted they do attempt to get between whatever you are trying to do. Had a cat that got between the piano keys and me (finally gave up and just sat next to me); another cat chewed the corners of whatever book I was reading; and current one, a black cat like picture, interposes himself until I send him off. Kitchen duties can be interesting with this one.

http://bit.ly/2yov9W2 ====== Thread by @LarrySchweikart: On Voting Patterns Posted by: Nothing is Gonna Happen at October 18, 2018 10:09 AM (sXyKU) *** Solid analysis. Had not thought of looking at this from a pure "registration coupled with ballot requests and early voting trends only" point of view. Needless to say - if Rs are outperforming in these areas over an election year it points to a very favorable trend for Rs and a possible ( hidden?) rejection by the electorate of the politics of division, race, mob rule and hatred being espoused by the dems/leftards (I know the left and MSM is saying conservs/Rs are doing all this but it is obvious projection). I have been pointing at the early vote totals in Florida as an example but this is expanding it all over the place and finding that trend in other areas as well. I also note that the DNC is pouring money into New Jersey, of all places, although I find that has more to do with Menendez himself, who is a demonstrably morally repugnant child molester and corruptocrat on a grand scale (which is personal to him and not part of a trend). Similarly - I do not agree with the correlation between the Senate and House as there are too many geographic issues at play, and local issues, in House races ( for example - look at the gerrymandering in Pennsylvania by Democrats on the State Supreme Court). That being said - I like the trend and I agree that the disgusting politics of personal destruction unleashed by power hungry Democrats on an honorable, distinguished, and kind, family man such as Kavanaugh, by a suborned perjury leftist plant (Blasey Ford) was extremely distasteful to the average American, and enraging to those of us to the right who stand for the rule of law, honor, decency and the Constitution. Again - all Winston Wolfe rules apply here - but I am liking the trend. Not a preference cascade yet, perhaps, but a definite flow in that direction. Now if Republican GOPe's can shut their f*cking mouths for the next few weeks we might just see a very solid majority of both houses delivered to Trump in the run up to election year 2020. Oh and Trump - not like previous R presidents - is an asset on the campaign trail and a tireless worker. More Rs should be standing proudly with him and telling the MSM to f*ck off. Oh - and Blue wave? Mmmm - not seeing it - but, again, the only poll that counts is election day. So VOTE morons, vote. And bring your friends. The Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, also known as the Snyder Act, was proposed by Representative Homer P. Snyder (R) of New York and granted full U.S. citizenship to the indigenous peoples of the United States, called "Indians" in this Act. While the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution defined as citizens any person born in the U.S., the amendment had been interpreted to restrict the citizenship rights of most Native people. The act was signed into law by President Calvin Coolidge on June 2, 1924. You may now continue.

What do they believe, then? That American Indians evolved separately from Old World homo sapiens?
No, the standard theory is (was) that Amerinds wandered over the land bridge (or ice bridge) during the last ice age. The cultural core is considered to be the Clovis Culture because the oldest artifacts were found in Clovis, New Mexico and date from 12 or 14 thousand years ago. So the reigning theory was that the Clovis people walked over from Asia -- regular homo sapiens sapiens -- and spread out and diversified. Now there's more evidence that they didn't just walk across, they took boats along the edge of a shoreline or ice line, which if you're a boat person makes sense. Also, and this is where things get problematic for the One Wave Clovis explanation, there is increasing evidence of sites predating Clovis by tens of thousands of years. There are supposed to be footprints on a Carolinas beach from 50,000 years ago. There's plausible evidence that Polynesians made it to South America pre-Clovis. So theories go in and out of fashion. My theory is that people have always gone as far as they can, boats helped the process, and there has always been intermingling between the different kinds of human because humans like sex. Dennis Hof, the famous pimp of HBO's Cathouse, was found dead on Sunday. Age 72, had just celebrated his birthday with a giant party that included Ron Jeremy and Sheriff Arpaio. Ron Jeremy found him the next morning, dead. Hof had just won a Republican primary earlier this summer for a state House seat. He had been under investigation for... wait for it...sexual assault complaints lodged by three prostitutes. The complaints were dismissed by the court as being past the statute of limitations and Hof had denied the allegations. He was a big Trump supporter. Art is supposed to elicit emotion.
===== Not really, per se. Art supposed to be beautiful. Beauty does elicit an emotional response. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, true, but we know it when we see it, don't we. Making something beautiful is not something just any old artist can do. So, they settle for making something else -- statements. That's not art as much as it is commercial illustrating . . . YMMV. There are supposed to be footprints on a Carolinas beach from 50,000 years ago. There's plausible evidence that Polynesians made it to South America pre-Clovis. "
And then there's the Solutrean Hypothesis, which notes that the Clovis cultures tools most closely resemble those of the Solutrean Culture in France and Spain about 20,000 years ago or so, and hypothesizes that some of them came across the solid ice cap that would have existed across the north Atlantic at the time and not only colonized the east coast, but that their advanced tool making culture spread throughout the peoples that were already here, resulting in the so-called Clovis culture. Even going over an ice cap (which would have extended down to where Labrador is now at that time) was possible in the summer, when temperatures weren't too brutal. Ancient explorers would have hugged the coast line, using small boats made of animal skins and hunting the plentiful seals they would have encountered. Each evening they could put in and make fires for warmth from the seal blubber they would have had in abundance. It's easy to see men (who would have appeared much like the Inuit) making 20 miles a day that way, and they could make 2000 miles over a summer.
-------- It seems improbable that in only 14,000 years two continents - half of the planet - were settled, and all of the separate languages, religions, cultures, crab dip recipes, etc. could develop in that relatively short period of time. Are we just differing about tastes? Are my "tastes" insane? Am I insane?
I sort of feel the same about, say, an art installation involving excrement (there have been many) as compared to Monet. It seems like more than just a subjective dispute about taste to me. I could be wrong. ====== Beauty is in the eye of the beholder . . . Subjectively speaking: crazy people would prefer things that normies would not prefer. When the culture goes crazy, a large enough market develops so as to incentivize the production of an aesthetic that appeals to crazy. Of course marketing, as we know, can create demand artificially. Culture shifted, opened a window for the crazy aesthetic. Since the crazy aesthetic is easier and cheaper to produce, the marketers were incentivized to build demand for crazy aesthetic. Spiral downward... Why do people begin to prefer the non beautiful . . . jaded, awash in profane, develop a taste for it. Posted by: simplemind at October 18, 2018 11:11 AM (C6xeQ) 487

Big editorial in my local NJ--owned by USA Today about Menendez being a champion of women. It dismisses allegations of sex with underage Dominican prostitutes as hearsay and "long-discredited" They claim that women, disgusted by Donald Trump and still smarting over the Kavanaugh confirmation are going to e the difference in the race between Menendez and Hugin.
Okay, this is NJ and the Democrats have a massive machine, so if Menendez survives, it won't be a surprise. But what kind of warped thinking is at play here? The evidence against Menendez is stronger by leaps and bounds compared to anything against Trump or Kav. I think they sound desperate. They are not 'good' but they are 'well'. Meaning well-executed. Some of it, even most of it, is well-shot. It has "thrilling" action and hooah motivated soldiers. I've thought about that, but I think the inland predators such as wolves and big cats would have presented a substantial threat to the children, women and any domesticated animals they would have brought. A coastal watercraft would have allowed the family to travel, escape the threats, make land frequently and transport (rather than tote) possessions and domesticated animals over great distances. The tools are mostly made of stone, and stone has no carbon 14 in it, so dating has to be done by analysis of the strata where it' found. The comet is an interesting theory, and the evidence seems to go back and forth for it. I favor it because I think it's a wonderful explanation for episode known as the "Younger Dryas" - basically the Ice Age ended, things started to get warm, and suddenly the Ice Age kicked back in and everything froze up for another thousand years, and then it thawed again. There's no good theoretical explanation for why that happened, although there are a lot of theories. It also would explain why the extinction of the megafauna was more severe and more total in North America than it was anywhere else on the globe. The older people I know who are gushing over Beto are universally people who consider themselves much better "educated" than the average person, and who were faithful and loyal democrats back in the days when Texas was still a one party Democrat state. (through the 80's) They have spent the last 25 years HATING the fact that Texas has been taken over (in their mental narrative) by an uncouth redneck culture made up of aggies and Baptists who shoot guns and are crude and don't know anything about Culture at all. BUT, being cowards who don't want to stick their necks out, they've been hiding their feelings and pretending to go along.
And now Beto comes along, and his cult gives them license to publicly proclaim the hatred they've always had for the rest of us, but didn't think they could get away with expressing. From my observation, that's most of Beto's upper class support. Posted by: Tom Servo at October 18, 2018 11:34 AM (Kpl3J) 608

Cruz and Beto did a 'debate' on Tuesday night. Beto never really answered any question but he made sure to include how bi-partisan he was, every answer had 'democrats and republicans' working, voting, singing, hugging and whatever other thing he make up about being together.
Cruz came back with specifics on every issue he was presented. "How do you pay for medicare for all Beto?" "First let's discuss the goal!" was his 90 second meandering answer. "Senator Cruz?" "Well if you tax every person making over $1 million/year at 100% it would fund Medicare for All for about 5 months out of the year, Medicare for all is a talking point". "Beto, you've called for abolishing ICE", "Actually I said replace ICE with more customs officers at the ports of entry!" "Mr Cruz what do you say to that?" "Build the wall, increase interior enforcement, prosecute VISA overstays and target very illegal alien with every agency of law enforcement we have and of course increase the ICE task force". Posted by: willow at October 18, 2018 11:26 AM (dPd5y) Willow, I've struggled with that question. Thanks for asking. First of all, I am afraid to annoy the person cutting my hair. I could switch barbers, but she is a long-time friend in my husband's work and social circles and also cuts my husband's hair. She understands my type of hair really well and she is virtually irreplaceable. Secondly, I am profoundly deficient in the persuasive arts. It's not that I can't make a logical case; it's that I can't make a case to illogical people. I'm the reverse-Pied-Piper. Thirdly, I suspect that these ladies' commitment to their ideology is beyond reason. Part of it is belonging to their group and anyone breaking away would risk social isolation. Independent thought is very socially expensive. What I have told my barber is that I miss the days when people could share opinions without the giving and taking of offense and that while I knew we had different views, I believed she had good intentions in her views. We both want what's best, but we have different ideas of what would bring it about. Posted by: Emmie at October 18, 2018 11:46 AM (4HMW8) 617
