28 Funny kind of tentacle arm she has there... but, being me, rather fetching.....

Posted by: kraken at October 17, 2018 09:35 AM (ffWPP)

29 She actually lived in the purple era, died in 1957..... was rich, as you might have guessed.

Without question, the Marchesa Casati was the most scandalous woman of her day. All the while, Luisa journeyed wherever her fancy took her,Venice, Rome, Paris, Capri collecting palaces and a menagerie of exotic animals and spending fortunes on lavish masquerades.

I'd say she lived her life to the hilt...

41 Heh. I try to comment on the art without noticing anyone else's comments first, but I just saw "Gibson Girl". That works for her face.

The face looks different from the rest of the painting, which makes shapes out of slashes of color.

Her gloved forearm is compositionally nice, but it portrays a curve above the wrist that's painful to look at.

Verdict: too much purple.

She's wearing long opera gloves with buttons all up the side. Bunching of the fabric at the wrist gives the impression of an awkward angle. But it's just the gloves.

The girl, or the painting????

Posted by: kraken at October 17, 2018 09:42 AM (ffWPP)

73 Two superb portraits in a row. Nice. The Manet-like style of painting really gives her this image of a modern woman on the go, full of energy and life. The paleness of the face allows the viewer to really notice her eyes. If the face were darker, they'd get lost. And those red lips... just enough to complete the personality.

She must have been a handful.

"While many have admired heiress Casati over the years for her life led entirely based on her aesthetics, when you examine her biography, you find a woman who was incredibly selfish and was even described by close friends as megalomaniacal."

So everyone who said she looks like trouble gets a cookie.

Question: Richard III

"The purple testament of bleeding war"

What does it mean?

Certainly no Shakespearean, but looked it up. It's from Richard II, and is from a speech Richard gives when confronted by the rebellious Henry. In it he says, by my reading, "shall we fight and cause the death of our fellow countrymen, or will you submit to lawful rule?" Given the "purple" reference I'd assumed we would be talking about royal fighting, and that's what it was.

Here, you can read it for yourself (line 1735) and see if you agree.

299 Girlfriend had a retired Greyhound. Sweet dog, subdued, clever, but not bright.

The animal DID NOT like to ride in the car, which was pretty funny at times. Said girlfriend drove a VW Beetle (the real one), and when she would try to lift the dog into the back seat it would spraddle it's legs to resist.

Trying to get a spraddle-legged Greyhound into the back seat of a Beetle is quite a contest.

Damage or training and lack of human bonds kill their spirit. Jaxson the current kimhound grew up in our house from a puppy. Somehow we found him on craigslist, a lady had an oops litter she was adopting out. Hes been a very god dog.

322 >>Respectfully, JackStraw.... but do THEY even matter???

I suppose it depends on what you mean by matter.

If you mean will the media cover it as if this were a Republican scandal then of course not. That seems to be something some people care about even while they trash the media for being biased. I don't give a shit what the media says.

Papadopolous has been dropping hints for weeks that he was illegally taped by agents from Australia and the UK on orders from someone in the US. That seems important to me and it doesn't seem to be a big coincidence that Brennan, Clapper, Hayden and the rest have gone to ground. Dropping a dime on a couple of our biggest allies seems kind of big to me.

Page is suing Fusion GPS, the DNC, Perkins Coie and both Elias and Sussman personally. He could be a one man wrecking ball against groups that have been building fake narratives against Republicans for years. That seems kind of important.

Flynn has yet to sentenced almost a year after he was found guilty of a process crime and just Monday the FBI released evidence of who leaked about him.

The media isn't covering this because it is no longer good for them not because things aren't happening.

My guess is that Mueller is going to find a way after the election to back out of all of this and finish things up, except for some procedural stuff that will go on for a while. The entire thing was a play to try and swing the mid-term elections; once they're done there's just no reason to milk this dried up cow anymore.

Trump is never going to have to take the risk and try to kill the investigation; he waited it out long enough, and now it's going to sink of its own weight.

I agree. But that's not the point. Not "charging" but "releasing" allows the "resistance" to continue (i.e., gives them a reason) because "conviction would not occur, but that doesn't mean shady things didn't happen."

IOW: It's going to be what it's always been.

377 When I first looked at this with the slightlydark colors, exaggerated arm, stance and pallor, I thought of a Chas Addams image. Looking more I realized it was a very effective portrait that was showing the lady just as she wanted. Everything contributes to focussing on that pale face and staring (perhaps challenging) expression.

There's nothing straight in the painting; everything swirls and twists in different directions. Perhaps that alludes to the approach of the woman to life: nothing predictable.

For what it's worth, I like the dog.

There were a few points during the 2016 primary where he seemed to go wobbly. Like agreeing with the MSM that the violence at Trump rallies was the fault of Trump's rhetoric, rather that Soros funded leftist agitators. Or welcoming illegals across the border with Glenn Beck and handing out teddy bears. Despite that, he's obviously vastly preferable to O'Rourke.

Question: are their enough white conservative voters still left in Georgia to outvote 95% of the Black vote + white libs? Dems are betting no, and we will have to wait and see.

True story.
Fall of 1971 I was driving to college and as I topped the hill that provided my first view of Pullman WA and Washington State University, Maggie Mae was on the radio.
Four years later in June, I was a graduate and a newly commissioned officer in the Army headed for my Basic Course. As I looked in the rearview mirror at my last view of Pullman, Maggie Mae came on the radio.
A VERY goosebumps moment.

Does that jive with past early ballot trends?

Posted by: Froderick Wonkensteen at October 17, 2018 10:55 AM (+dsLj)

***
The answer is, historically, the Dems have always dominated the "early voting" in Fla as this type of voting was added, specifically, so dem skewing portions of the electorate would find it easier to vote (and also because it is a "ripe environment" for fraudulent voting practices that dems favor). 2016 early voting in the general election was a +150K for Dems, btw (and we all know how that turned out in the final tally). Republicans in Florida dominate election day in "live turnout". So--if the Dems are nto leading by a LOT in early voting in Fla - this is a very good sign.

I have been beating the drum that this is an early bell-weather for a while. That being said - all Winston Wolf rules still apply. Get out and VOTE folks - our lives and Country depend on it.

474 407 303 Can anyone tell me why people on the right don't like Ted Cruz? I honestly don't get it."

In Texas, *everyone* on the right loves Cruz, except for the few where he's done something to piss them off personally, and yeah there are a few. Now nationally, I've noticed that Cruz tends to irritate people because he seems to often take the position of "You know you fucktards out there in your fucked up states could fix just about all of your problems if you would just do things the way Texas does". And that doesn't bother anyone in Texas, because we all think that, but it doesn't work so well when he's talking to voters outside of this State.

And for the national name recognition. I think he intends to pursue a political career of some kind. I suspect they may consider him a future Presidential candidate (2024 and beyond), not as much because of him per se, but how weak their bench is. Their current crop of potential candidates looks like they raided an old-folks home.

Then he'd better move to a different state. If he can't take a statewide race in TX now, he never will. And if he can't win a statewide election he's not going to be seriously considered presidential material by the moneymen. The time for an O'Rourke style candidate in the Democratic party is over. Too white and too centrist.

535 Ah, yes, an appointed position to ensure he shuts up and follows directions from his 'betters'.

I need an effective brain working in the Senate, not only representing TX, but all of us who want something different.

The idea that the AG, DOJ, or appellate judges just do what they're told doesn't bear much resemblance to reality. We complained about Holder precisely because he was very effective for the other side, and we complain about Sessions precisely because he is not. Cruz is a lawyer's lawyer and ideal for a law-related position where he can call the shots within his own sphere. Instead he's 1 of 100 in a chamber well to his left. He's a backbencher who is not getting anything done in the senate beyond the occasional red-meat speech. Not his fault, but there's not a lot he can do there that anyone with an R. behind his name couldn't, given the senate's unfortunate make-up.

536 The last time I know I had my passport was coming back into Canada from Las Vegas in August so I know it's in Alberta.

537 220 Lurch Mueller says he's ready to release findings from his "investigation". Just in time for the election.

I suggest it would be safest if he does so from the sanctuary of the Saudi Consulate. Excellent security.

But seriously, you do not want to piss off Trump, like Obama did at that WH Correspondents dinner. Whatever is holding Trump back from dropping the Big One could suddenly become unimportant.

539 I was gonna call it "The Octopus Dress"...then I realized it was the dog's legs & tail. lol I did not see the dog at first. I suppose if the painting was enlarged I would.

The lady's proportions are elongated. Look at her shoe & how long her legs would need to be.

Omgawd!! It's Maris Crane! Remember when Niles got a dog that looked like her? This is so what Maris Crane would look like.
