1 Good Morning Morons; today is Sunday, October 14, 2018. On this day last year a gun shop agreed to pay the city of Milwaukee and two police officers $6M in a civil suit because they sold a gun to someone who was buying it for an 18 year old yoot who could not legally buy it. The gun grabbers had a field day with this BS civil suit. Despite a federal law shielding gun stores and gun makers from civil liability when a criminal uses one of their guns to commit a crime they agreed to pay this totally ridiculous payout. The gun shop owner was supposed to magically know the purchaser was not buying it for himself despite signing a federal form swearing that he was not buying it for someone else.

Once went without power for 2 weeks. The power company restored power sector by sector. (ice storm) Of course I was at the bottom of the list. Used my kerosene heater and went into the city to movies. I remember the moment the power came on and the furnace started up.

We never lost power here. All of our power lines though are underground. My MIL who lives over in town though lost power. But she and her neighbors were paying the penalty for living in a neighborhood with a lot of live oak trees.

Utilities have a set schedule of the order that they restore power. Generally speaking they will get hospitals and other emergency services first, then they restore power to customers who are on their list of "emergency" needs for health reasons, the last of all general customers with in order of the most number first. If you live out in the sticks somewhere all by your lonesome you will be among the last. That is what my younger brother is, he is out in the sticks with no neighbors.

There is a point in time, where the police's assumptions about your vehicles presence on the road turn from "That guy has been drinking" to "That guy must have to be at work early".

I believe that change occurs around 5 a.m.

So if you out drinking at a friends house, rather than leave at 3 a.m., pound another brew or two, hang around unwanted, and make your way back home at 5:00 a.m.

You can even stop for breakfast, if you like, but I would recommend using drive thrus and avoiding doughnut shops. Big, fat nosy cops like to hang out at breakfast joints.

66 We finished the first day of a three day estate auction of the Old Man's stuff yesterday. Cleared all of his antique medical collection and most of the antique furniture. The model of the Chinese junk didn't go for as much as we hoped, but the appeal of an 8-ft long model is pretty ... selective.

It was kind of fun talking to the people there, even if was a bit mentally exhausting: they were just amazed at the extent and variety of his interests. Lots of people would look at his private library and the art-work he painted and describe the Old Man as a "genius."

The primitive tools, knives and Western American fur trade stuff goes on the auction block today. Then the books (all 20,000 of them) go next Saturday.

I did a tour on Essex when she was stationed in Sasebo.

Can't tell you how many times I would go over to the smoke pit in the wee hours of darkness, and realize that we were doing 20 its weaving through fleets of small fishing vessels with CPAs looking to be less than 1500 yards, or less.

And I'm not talking small fleets either.

Yep, we used to lose about 1 or 2 a cruise, usually due to falling (or jumping) overboard. We had one idiot jumped overboard because he thought he could swim to Singapore while we were headed for the IO. But he got picked up by the helo. We also used to lose a lot of aircraft on launching. We lost more due to that than we lost due to enemy action over North Vietnam.

The Old Man has not passed away,yet; but in poor health and living in a nursing home. He has lost his battle with dementia. He still knows who we are and where he his but is completely disoriented as to time: he will talk about events that occured decades ago as if they just happened. He doesn't like the loss of independence but will say, "The girls take good care of me," when talking about the staff at the nursing home.

It's just time for a new generation of collectors to enjoy all the goodies the Old Man has accumulated over the years.

I did a bathroom makeover and did the long countertop with two sinks. When the wife is getting her act together she uses about seven feet of the eight feet width. Stuff everywhere. Hairdryer, curling iron, makeup, sprays, lotions, etc.

My son has the better set up -- two sinks and counters, but separated by a doorway.

The damage control teams we had top side were awful. We used to send teams from the engineering spaces to help them when we had a real fire. We had one fire where the top side OBAs were inop because someone had been "gundecking" the canister rotation PM. The captain was real pissed.

But I have been impressed by repair teams needed without warning for decades, from the USS Stark, Cole, Fitzgerald, etc. Alas, those ships needed a lot of time to repair. But the crew did an amazing job. Not just Repair 5.

One drone hit put a CG out of action for 6 months. Implications for force structure are clear. You need more ships to fill in for damage, if you do not have a lot of armor.

When the stuck in the last century lab did semi-annual power downs that affect even the computer rooms those sys admins would do things like schedule "shut down in 10 hours" for computers running automatic jobs on shoestring budget instead of shutting them down on Fri afternoons for a Sat morning power loss. And then they would work on Saturday afternoon to get computers back up and take flex time later.

I did appreciate them doing that but not sufficiently. Now we have an incompetent plus lazy senior sys admin and the younger, newer hire guy who is great got fed up with the doing 90% of the work and is only still here to take advantage of the great education bennies the company offers.
