Meet The PetMorons

IMG_20180628_191234.jpg

Pictured below are Riley the Border Collie and Haggis the West Highland Terrier. Riley has been lonely since Allstar (once featured in PetMorons as the one-eyed pirate terrier) passed away last year just shy of 13 years. Haggis who is 8 months old, spends his days bedeviling Riley and generally committing all manner of mischief and mayhem. Its true that dogs are man's best friend, but it's a joy to behold dogs who are best friends. - The Butcher

Sorry to hear about Allstar, but happy to hear you have found a substitute for him. Good looking crew you have there Butcher. Thank you for the story.

My Yorkie, Bug (11 yrs-old and going strong), loves the beach on the Outer Banks. She likes to walk on the hard sand and let the incoming waves cool her belly -- have to keep her on a leash because sometimes she get washed away. She's so short that blowing sand gets in her eyes. I found these goggles at a local store so I guess it's a pretty common problem. Also good for fishing trips on blazingly bright days.

I always look forward to Sunday morning and the Pet thread. Keep up the good work!

liz953 thank you for taking the time out to deal with your bumbling Cob. I finally got Bug's photo up. We appreciate the insight into goggles.

This is Big Boy(aka ciccano). Originally from Arezzo Italy in 2009. His first mom left him and went to Austin. He had bad teeth when he moved in. But the three that are left are perfect. The next picture is Pugs, or Pugsy, adopted in 2015 and the best dog ever. The last picture is Mittens, Jr. a walk on and twin to our first Mittens. All have been in the pet hoard before.
Big is doing what he does best, Pugs resting from the Texas heat, and Mitten waiting for 5:00 so she can try to get my wine. Lurker, annieb

Annieb it appears that most of them have been sipping on the wine. It's always 5:00 somewhere, amirite? Great looking crew!!! Thanks for the submission. Best of luck with them.

CFO Moms cats being herded. Video.

This you tube video is of my "boys", 3 littermates I adopted in 1998. The last one passed away this past January. In their prime the spent all day having their staff man the door so they could come and go at will. But in the evening, I would ring the bell to let them know it was time to come in for dinner. The video shows how well they knew what the signal meant.

My current cats are Spike (the black one) a rescue who acquired us 3 years ago (The Humane Society estimated his age at about 3 years when we got him. He is seen here in favorite spot - my desk.) and Gigi (the gray tuxedo). Gigi showed up on our porch last summer and took up residence. She was kind of thin and a bit fearful at first. We captured her and took her to be fixed but it turned out she already had been. As winter neared we decided to just bring her inside and she resides under my bed most of the time but she is happy, vocal and not "tiny" anymore. In fact Gigi stands for" Greedy Gut".

Thank you for the weekly thread. I enjoy it very much even tho I sometimes have to read it too late to be able to comment.

Thank you for taking the time to submit the photos and to make the You Tube video. A fine herd of cats you have there cfo mom. I appreciate your kind words.

I've read content at AOS for years and have lurked in comments for a while. Last Saturday (8/4) I de-lurked as Evasiveboat42. Here are pics of my current dogs.

This is Moose, he's an Icelandic Sheepdog, he's a good herding dog and all around great farm dog, and of course my best friend. He's the only one here that knows exactly how much livestock and poultry we have and where they'll belong. He'll certainly alert us if anything is out of place.

This is Sunna, also an Icelandic Sheepdog. She's an AKC Grand Champion and Canine Good Citizen. She enjoys chasing wild birds out of the yard, playing frisbee, playing ball, and laying on my lap.

This is Clover, she is Sunna's daughter, thus another Icelandic Sheepdog. She's a good herding dog/farm dog and wonderful pet. She also earned her Canine Good Citizen. She is also a bit of a goof.

This is Osita, a Schipperke. She has a collection of tricks she does, the first one is free then Osita has to get paid. Smart little dog, if not a bit hard headed or bossy. She was a gift to my wife one Christmas, it was almost Christmas and I hadn't found a gift yet, how much trouble could a little tiny puppy be? She's very much loved here.

Thanks for letting me share my pets!

You are most welcome Evasiveboat42. I've never "met" an Icelandic Sheepdog. Very cute. And I suspect with most herding type dogs they always need something to do to keep them busy and fulfilled. They look happy and healthy abused and mistreated

But the medicine he's on is working, keeping the symptoms down and keeping the condition from getting worse. We were steeling ourselves for the worst and instead got the best news possible.

Horses are terrified in this type of weather. I turn mine out to the back pasture. No barns, etc., to turn into death traps. So much can happen in this kind of weather, most of it bad.

27 Cats are funny when they think they attack you. Don't let this video perpetuate stereotypes and prejudices in your mind. You may lose a few drops of blood. You'll live. It's entertaining. Besides, if you train them early enough they won't bite (so I've been told by someone who devotes a lot of her time to it).

35 Friend of mine has a new dog, a female mutt, looks like a mix of border collie and aussie shep. He got her as a rescue, she's about a year old, and has the sweetest temperament imaginable.

She is absolutely constant with him. Stays right next to his leg wherever he goes, no leash required. In the first few week he had her he trained her to not jump out of the truck unless commanded, to shake vigorously an extra time after climbing out of the water, to lay right next to his chair when he sits, and more.

She does not bark at people or other dogs.

She's the perfect pet.

So, how do you find rescues like her?

36 I wrote a long post last week about how we had to put our darling wee Puska to sleep. The post was fubar somehow and did not post.
She was the most.sweet and loving dog I had ever seen. She was so brave and fought cancer for 4 years and I had posted here some time ago that she was all clear. In the last.few weeks she was not herself and we thought it was the medication causing her problems. Took her to the vet on Friday , the ultrasound showed he liver had many spots and she was bleeding into her abdomen. We are heartbroken. We spent the night crying and telling her how much she meant to us and that we loved her. Puska was with me 24 hours a day but I still did not have enough time with her. The vet came around on Saturday and made it all right for her. She slumped into my arms and was at peace. See you on the other side sweet puppy, our Poggle Woggle dog.

44 So, how do you find rescues like her?

Two places to start are 1) local vets-- they often know of people who can't/won't keep a pet, and if the vet has cared for the pet, he/she knows the pet's personality; 2) no-kill shelters-- they keep dogs long enough to get to know them well, and are happy to help match potential adopters with the right dog for them.

I once had a border collie mix adopt me. It showed up on my doorstep and barked a few times. I opened the door, and it walked right in like it was already her home. No collar/tags and no chip.

That dog was scary smart. I could tell her to go find my daughter, by name, and off she would go. Great and sweet disposition too.

Agree with checking the local vet first. Someone tossed a tiny kitten in our front yard one night and the first thing we did after we fed her was to let the vet know she was up for adoption because our dogs would kill her if she got in the house or the backyard. They got her a home in less than 3 weeks.

Much sympathy across the interwebz about your loss of Puska. It is so hard to part with a beloved pet. Of my four cats who are presently chasing St. Francis around heaven, one died in my arms (vet thought her spleen had ruptured) but the other three had to take that last sad trip to the vet. One of the three had rapidly progressing cancer-- it is a nasty disease and I do understand your grief.

58 This is going to make me super unpopular here, but I stay away from no kill shelters. Many times their dogs are sick, unhealthy, unsocialized, and on their last legs. I've dealt with no-kill shelters where local authorities had to intervene because of disease. They simply do not take proper care of their dogs. I'm not saying all - but definitely some - no-kill shelters are run by nutballs. There, I said it.

64 There, I said it.

I adopted my first cat from a local no-kill shelter with a very good local reputation. It's been around since 1947 and takes excellent care of its cats and dogs. I insisted on a tour of the entire shelter before adopting Princess. I'm sure there are bad no-kill shelters but this one is first-rate. I know that when I took Princess to the vet for her first annual checkup after I adopted her, I gave her shelter records to the vet, and he commented that he thought very highly of this shelter. Maybe one way to sort out the good from the no-good no-kill shelters is to ask around the local vets.

Working for the vet is how I got to know the various shelters. LOL. This one no-kill we had to endure, was run by a witch. No, a real witch. Another one had annual parvo contests. The problem with no-kill shelters is that often, the owners take no-kill to an extreme, and refuse to put down a severely ill and contagious dog, and let them run in the general population, because, No Cages!

I'm sure there are very fine no-kills. It's just my preference to start looking for a pet in other avenues. For those who have found a good pet thru no-kills, I think that's awesome, and makes me glad to know there are some good ones out there.

Also, some people who run no-kills do so because they are hoarders. It's a real thing.

I'll shut up now.

69 Great week! So many adorable moronimals!
Love cfo-mom's video, especially the big ol' black cat coolly sauntering in at last.

That Golden puppy reminds me of our Cooley, who had his own favorite baseball as a pup and still prefers them to tennis balls.
We got Cooley just at the time our youngest was obsessed with baseball...and the new puppeh. So I guess it makes sense.

77 Taking a well-earned rum-and-cola break here. Just finished mopping the asphalt tile floor with a sloppy-wet string mop, and then wet-vacuuming the areas mopped down. Floor is basically clean, but still shows a few streaks, but a huge improvement overall.

I think I will purchase a squeeze mop with a double bucket, and give it a touchup later.

78 Grammie--

Re: no-kill shelters. My late mother had a rather "persuasive" friend who took her to a no-kill shelter when she was grieving after the loss of her two Siamese.

Mom adopted three cats. The little female died within weeks after adoption. Don't know exactly what was wrong with her, but she was clearly ill when adopted.

Her brother lived for several years, but had severe allergies. My mom tried to care for him, but ultimately the allergies killed him.

The third cat was always "odd."

FWIW, I think caution with respect to no-kill shelters is warranted.

Yikes! I hope the local Polizei are doing their job. The first year I lived in my present apartment, some drug dealer fleeing from downtown crashed his SUV into a telephone pole and a parked car two doors down from my house, totaled the car, and took off on foot toward the local park. There were four squad cars blocking off the street within seconds. My cats sat in the living room window enjoying the blue and red flashing lights as well as all the humans in uniform running around. And yes, there were car parts all over the street too.

Perhaps, but they generally take a passive approach as to make it appear an accident. Rather than jump in front of you, they'll usually be sprawled out and only become a tripping hazard to those who don't look where they walk. This is completely in line with my giant tuxedo cat who is sprawled at the top of the stairs just outside my bedroom every morning.

118 Been a little over a month since we had to say goodbye to our li'l calico, Bug. The vet was wonderful. She fed Bug some really good smushy food that Buggy scarfed down. So, in the end, she passed with a full tummy, cradled in Mrs. Mahon's arms.

Our other two kittehs are adjusting. our old lady (20 years old next April), Dame Mischa, was the one I was worried about. but aside from sometimes wandering around looking for her best good friend, she is doing well. My Casey is more actively sneaky-- he'll walk in front of me and then stop suddenly with his front paws stretched out and his rear in the "elevator butt" position. I'm used to this tactic by now but the first few times he did it I almost did trip over him. I've warned him that I'd be hard to replace if he ever does succeed in tripping me.

132 Random stuff---That photo of Bug the Yorkie was taken over a year ago...
Update on the Bug: Vet suspects Cushings b/c she's hungry all the time and eats 3 big squares a day....have done lots of blood tests without conclusive diagnosis. But she's lost weight in 4 months (9.1 to 7.6 lbs). Otherwise, she's happy and up to her usual Yorkie hijinks. Well-wishes all accepted with gratitude.
..........
So, how do you find rescues like her?
I once picked up a really ugly mutt from the side of the road. One of the best canines created by God. She'd run into a burning house if I asked. A true pet-friend for 8 years. If you're looking for a new best friend, you need to look into their eyes to see if they are paying attention, mess about with their feet, and see if they love a good scratch behind the ears. If it's a puppy, do the "submissive" test, where you lay it upside-down in your lap, and see if it struggles to get away. (check for fleas, too). When I got the Bug (at 7months old), she laid there as if in a hammock, totally relaxed. This little test has always worked for me.
