Is This Something?

Surprise! Another remake of an 80s movie with some brand recognition.

And surprise! Another attempt to make money by imitating a recent success. (Here, the success of the It remake.)

Still... Kinda scary!

Because the geniuses that gave us the new Ghostbusters and Ben-Hur movies just know they are more wicked smart than the originals.

98 I'm watching Jay and Jack of RLM discuss "Re-animator" and "From Beyond", two B-movie cheez platters based on Lovecraft stories.

These are the apotheosis of 80's splatter effects, plus you have Jeffrey Combs' hilariously focused Dr. Herbert West.

Combs has been in many iterations of Trek. I loved him as the obsequious Weyoon, and best of all as Shran the Andorian. "Pinkskins!"

Truer words never said. In retrospect, we should have known when he picked "Compassionate Conservative" as his mantra. Yea, that "messaging strategy" worked out really swell. I guess without the strong compassionate leadership of Bush, Jeb, Romney, the Left would really hate us and call us Nazis and stuff. (side note: What do all of those dudes have in common?)

101 Never liked the first Pet Sematary. I don't read King but I did like the TV mini series IT until the end with the ridiculous giant spider. WTH?

The Shining was pretty good. Didn't like the casting of Duval though.

The rest of King's made to screen stuff is just meh.

OT but has anyone else seen the movie Dark Skies? I don't do alien abduction movies but came across this flipping channels. I thought it was really good for that genre which I normally don't like.

106 But seriously folks...

Stephen King has written so many books, and so many of them are SO similar, I think a computer could be programmed to write one by this time. All you would need is to fill in the following blanks:

- Name of protagonist
- horrific first event
- Type of Christianity the protagonist (and therefore the entire book) hates
- Republican bad guys/authority figures
- Types of confrontations/ending (bullying, harassment, obsessive, rape, apocalypse, demonic, supernatural, aliens)

Hmm ... how to fool such motion capture ?

Back when I was doing Image Shit, with Cognex and shit, those systems just looked at 0-255 for each pixel. Enough pixel numbers move ... and we have "motion".

Seems the answer is to drive all the numbers to very bright ... and bonus points for blinding the camera.

He could be taken ill and they don't want him to be stressed with a bunch of emails but a decent leadership place would have sent an email or if its more sensitive then 'he is sick' and they announced it in person this morning before I got here (I work an offset period) let me know. Posted by: Ace's liver at October 10, 2018 07:44 PM (h2Bdk)

One guy made a point that I think is pretty explanatory. The market has so many options now and is so niche oriented that there isn't anything that's definitive about pop culture any longer. So, if you are going to invest in a movie, you need something that is immediately recognizable. The last decade that had any sort of definable characteristic was the 80's (and I would say into at least the mid-90's). So, lots of remakes come from that time.

Look at TV shows today. They get ratings that would have gotten them canceled after a month in the 80's. Notice that people that grew up or lived through that time have lots of pop culture references to throw at each other? Meanwhile people born the 90's and on are stuck with Harry Potter and what else?

The odd thing is that his books are pretty straightforward and should translate on the screen.

A combination of those problems.

1) The Golden Rule. The movies that make the gold make the rules. Nobody's going to sink $200 million into something new. And nobody's going to do "intelligent and subtle" when they have to sell it to the average American (And the average Chinese a month later.)

So all the "new" stuff, if it gets made at all, will be at the indie/arthouse level.

B) Sturgeon's Revelation. 90% of everything is crud. So of those new arthouse movies, one in ten might be watchable. I think Theodore Sturgeon might update the percentage to adjust for Wokeness if he were formulating it today.

Nope. Experience.

Two weeks ago a ton of people on this site were losing their shit over Kavanaugh and Trump's eager acceptance of the FBI investigation.

Even the proprietor was pessimistic.

And yet...

Trump holds all the cards. All of them. He can dispatch Rosenstein at a time and manner of his choosing. He can order the release of anything he wants. He chooses not to do so because he knows things we don't.

It isn't "faith" to trust the judgement of a guy who achieved the presidency in the face of massive opposition over internet blowhards who don't even use their real names half the time. Those that do are being paid by plutocrats to toe the line no matter how badly they mangle their reputations.

Given that choice, trusting Trump is the only logical thing to do.

287 I don't get remakes. Have we, as a civilization, run out of stories to tell? And why would I see a remake of a movie I've already seen?

Here's where it comes from:

1) Old movies were successful and made money so they're safe properties
2) Horror movies are cheap as hell to make
3) These old properties didn't get broad international release so a remake gives proven properties a chance to make money overseas

Husband tries hard to woo wife back as she struggles through her TBI rehab. She eventually relents and they become couple again. They go on to have two kids together.

End of movie.

In real life, the woman says she never fell back in love with husband, but got back together with him because that's what everybody wanted and it seemed like what she should do. After 25 years of marriage, husband announces he's in love with another woman, and he divorces wife.

They should make a sequel to The Vow (which I never saw but was probably treacle-laden b.s. as these types of movies usually are). The sequel could be called "The Reality" and show the post-TBI wife feeling trapped in a marriage to a man she didn't really like much, and the husband sneaking out to cheat on the brain-damaged wife with his mistress.

It wouldn't be a hit, but at least it would be real!

Totally, completely OT, but this reminds me of a story...

Right after Episode I came out, I was out on the Official Star War Talk City site (anyone remember chat rooms?) and people in Australia and New Zealand were asking about what was in the movie because it hadn't opened there yet.

And I started a riff about how Natalie Portman's nude scene was very tasteful, not at all smutty and PEOPLE LOST THEIR SHIT.

It was glorious.

529 Disco (which I still refer to as The Disco Crisis) was a direct response to the album/art rock of the early 1970's. There were still plenty of hard rock acts out there, but the emergence of mostly-British "progressive" rockers like Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. - with their 33-side length single songs, outlandish and overdone solos and drug-enhanced lyrical stories - is what lead to the pendulum snap-back that was Disco.

It was the hard rockers who paid the price for that, especially after most of the prog-rock groups "re-branded" during the 80's

Posted by: Jewells45 at October 10, 2018 09:35 PM

I was there too and it did become snobby. However, there was a reason for the backlash. It wasn't disco per se... when there were good recordings, songs and it was just a variant of soul/funk, it was ok. Plus it wasn't shoved down your throat 24/7, initially. It was just part of the menu from the 70's. But something bad happened. Disco got really bad there, lost it's charm, became bland and truly awful. Worst of all it took over everything and all you got was shit disco, all the time. That's what caused the backlash. The excess.

In the late 60's, "rock" music --- which once was all about the beat and the dancing --- fell under the influence of "folk" music, among many other things.
It became Meaningful.
Instead of the earlier stuff that kids danced to, it became something you just listened to. Deep, man.

Disco is dance music. Not deep. Not political. Not mind-expanding. DANCE music.
The Left hated that, saw it as a reactionary force, as a sort of opium of the masses distracting youth from the "ideals" of Woodstock. Whatever.

I think that's the main origin of the hatred.
