EMT 10/6/18

What can I say about the last several weeks?

In a word, it has been infuriating. Yesterday I woke up, again, several hours before the alarm unable to go back to sleep as my mind raced with the thought that the fascist and fabulist Left just may win again over a subservient and unprincipled Right.

It would appear that those doubts will be assuaged, pending the votes over the next day or so.

Kavanaugh will be confirmed on almost strict party lines.

But...

But.

I must still explain to my politically detached wife why I have rings under my eyes.

So I tell her the recent news as it pertains to us:

Our son will grow up in a world where no matter how hard he tries, no matter how much he achieves and no matter how well he treats other people, at some point he may have everything taken from him by a woman who claims he gave her a bad touch decades in the past.

Our daughter will run the risk of being assaulted in a restroom by someone who "identifies as a woman" but swings an active crank, and instead of being consoled and defended, will instead be called a liar and have her parents referred to child services.

Both are growing up in increasingly violent times, as the Left and their mouthpieces dehumanize their enemy.

Rest assured, both will be given the benefit of home-schooling, and will be trained in physical and material preparedness.

But it is excruciating that I must do so. My kids deserve to grow up in the American dream, unburdened and unthreatened by those who despise me and mine just because I have the audacity to believe that gender is directly proportionate to one's plumbing, or that in a just society, guilt isn't presumed according to political affiliation.

I am tired. I am frustrated and angry. I miss the days of reasonable policy debate with my political others.

These November elections will be illuminating. The professional Left has staked its claim in paranoia and hysteria. The results this November will tell us just how damaging to a nation that claim can be.

After I hung up I got to thinking about 5 months ago I got a check in the mail made out to me for X amount. I remember laughing and tell Mr k. Notice they start by talking about a convert to "conservatism", but then talk about being "Republican". It doesn't even cross their mind that, perhaps, the reason for the lack of progress is that the Bushes, McCain and Romney are Republicans, but not conservatives.

And it is, indeed, everywhere. In NoVA, even trying to get a job promotion past a certain level requires that pedigree. In other words, know your place, trailer trash, and if you don't we will mercilessly pound you down.

193 As far as I know, the tiles are actually set on the concrete. At least that's what is sounds like when you step on one of them and it shifts. There seems to be a small high spot running halfway through the center of the room.

Supposedly this floor was "floated", whateverthehell that means, before I bought the house. That was right after a huge downpour that flooded the house. I guess as the ground dried it would've shifted a bit.

Hanging a house on the side of a hill is tricky.

Posted by: creeper at October 06, 2018 07:43 AM

If you have spare tiles around, then you can just do what Skip said, thinset and re-grout. If you don't -- don't despair. Since it's the center of the room, have someone make a design for you with some smaller mosaic tiles perhaps, or with another tile. Turn it into a 'feature' of the room.

201 " The grout is coming up in places and tiles are breaking. But it's not the entire floor...just the center"

Gonna agree with the other Morons who have said that the issue is probably with the surface that the tile is actually setting on. Tile will pop loose or crack from it and the subfloor no longer being in firm touching contact with each other. And that can be one or more joists sagging, or the subfloor moving up or down due to not being properly fastened to the joists. Or the foundation shifting.

I would lean towards a failed adhesive, except for the tiles also breaking. That leads me to think that the tiles in spots are still firmly fastened to the subfloor, but the subfloor is trying to bend under stress or foot pressure. And tile does not bend. It cracks.

And yet that's the stage where the doctor tells you it's terminal, then leaves the unpleasant options up to you. We're coming to the point where people realize that decision has to be made one way or the other, or it'll be made for them by people who hate them.

The truly interesting times to live in haven't really started yet. This is only the previews.

It's time to start worrying if you see fire, smell sulfur, and hear demonic voices.

Seriously, this may be a good time to call in a respected professional. It's probably due to changes in moisture in the surrounding soil. That can wreak havoc with houses, even those with a pier and beam foundation. A good engineering firm can recommend a variety of solutions to fix, stop, or delay the problem.

There are all-vinyl floors that go in like pergo (snap-in) that are pretty easy to install and less than $2 sq/ft. I put that down in a basement room two weeks ago.

I think slate is 99% waterproof -- somewhere in that area. I've never seen a stain that 'took' on slate.

Yeah, urine can mess up a wood floor, but I suspect laminates are fine. Some of them are pretty much indistinguishable from real wood.

320 Creeper - if tiles are loose it isn't going to make it worse to pull 1 up and see what is under. It might be possible to patch, since it's center of room and no where else a problem there from outside is probably not the total cause. Now we're getting somewhere. A hundred dollar repair project can turn into a couple thousand. We'll rip out the floors and walls, replace the floor with wood, drywall the walls then paint a light gray.

It's how men rock.

350 Skip, I can't see anything between the tile and the concrete. The work was done by the previous owner who was supposedly a contractor. My realtor pointed out problems with it when I looked at the house but the house was so perfect otherwise I accepted the problem.

The best view of the base was beneath an edge of door trim. There doesn't seem to be anything over the concrete. I couldn't get that tile (11-3/4" square) up without breaking it but where the grout is gone concrete is visible.

My wife, experienced in such matters, always takes my estimate and doubles it. Toughest part will be matching the grout color. Make sure you keep a sample chunk around.

Posted by: Embedded in my Pre-Frontal Cortex at October 06, 2018 09:25 AM (URwyc)

353 If a space between that was measurable ( say 1 inch or more) it was on a wet bed which means a layer of mortar was put down and tile on top. A much bigger but nonetheless solver problem. So if tile was just on concrete it used a thin set adhesive which is easier to repair. If tile was broke ( ) it should be easy to find a replacement, but any surrounding tiles are loose they should come up easier. After all tiles are up clean out all loose mortar, spread thin set per instruction ( probably a notched trowel) place tiles back.
Easy.

You cannot have reasonable policy debate anymore because of the massive historical ignorance on the Left, and their inability to exercise reason (as opposed to catechism).

In so many discussions that I've attempted, it becomes quickly evident that to even have the discussion, it is necessary to instruct them in things they should have learned back in High School; sometimes even Grade School*. Unless both parties are willing to invest the time and effort in this educational gambit, a "discussion" isn't going to happen.

* - This goes beyond politics and history: it applies as well to the STEM subjects.
