The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

242 years ago we told the British Empire to bugger off. They were the greatest naval power in the world, and had armies all over the globe. Why did we send that message? because the people of this fledgling country did not like being told what to do by unelected rulers three thousand miles away.

So I have a message for the International Court of justice (Hah!) and the United Nations; Bugger Off.

We are a sovereign nation that has the absolute unequivocal right to defend our national interests against all who would threaten them, and Iran is a particularly egregious example. It is a country that by all objective evaluations is the foremost promoter and supporter of terrorism in the world. Iran has, through its internal terrorist networks and its external proxies, murdered hundreds of Americans and supplied the technology and material to kill hundreds of American soldiers. It foments insurrection and instability wherever it goes, and has as its stated national goals the destruction of "Great Satan" (America) and "Little Satan" (Israel).

The United Nations and its various courts are nothing but apologists for third-world revolutionaries, and any country that displays antipathy toward the West and its obviously superior culture is immediately supported with funds and coddled in UN and court official pronouncements and holdings.

It is a farce, and the breathtaking arrogance that would allow them to attempt to dictate to the United States of America is disgusting, though not unexpected. To paraphrase Stalin, "How many divisions does the UN have?" [Not counting its military organizations that specialize in child rape]

U.S. ordered to lift some Iran sanctions by International Court of Justice

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The United Nations' highest court has ordered the United States to lift sanctions on Iran that affect imports of humanitarian goods and products and services linked to the safety of civil aviation.

President Donald Trump moved to restore tough U.S. sanctions in May after announcing he was withdrawing from Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers. Iran challenged the sanctions in a case filed in July at the International Court of Justice.

WWII code breaker buried in Nebraska with UK military honors
OMAHA, Neb. — A 92-year-old woman has been buried in Nebraska with British military honors for a secret that she held for decades: her World War II service as a code breaker of German intelligence communications.

The Union Jack was draped over Jean Briggs Watters' casket during her burial Monday, the Omaha World-Herald reported. Watters died Sept. 15.

The tribute honored Watters for her role decoding for a top-secret military program led by British mathematician Alan Turing, who was the subject of the 2014 Oscar-winning film "The Imitation Game ." Watters was among about 10,000 people, mostly women, who participated in the Allied effort to crack German communication codes throughout the war.

Our current focus is on much more unpleasant topics, so it is a pleasure to read of the honors afforded this woman.

We are so busy being excited by the intestinal fortitude being displayed by our otherwise craven and cowardly representatives that..perhaps...we have lost sight of the fact that yes, they are still Republicans, and will undoubtedly stab us in the backs when they see fit.

Until I see real change, and not just the (at least partly) ego-driven responses to typical Democrat behavior, I will reserve judgement. Well, except for the video of Graham down below. That made me laugh.

So here's a funny tidbit. I know someone who works for SCOTUS on their administrative staff.

Apparently, justices on the court have to serve on the various administrative committees, and the committee that they're on is determined by their tenure.

Guess what committee is reserved for the junior-most justice?

The Party Planning Committee.

I swear I'm not making this up.

Absolutely. I really think they expected Kav to withdraw or Trump to pull the nomination merely upon "there is an accuser stating groping" 3 weeks ago. They failed to game this out to the end. When what they wanted didn't happen, the call went out for the loonies to come forward and each one who stepped forward made the immediate previous one look more contrived and stupid.
Add to that ChiFi's handling of it and then the smears adding some momentum to R enthusiasm, this is a text book case of the "law of unintended consequences."

134 On the Michael Moore comment on Trump ending democracy on a fake emergency:

One of
the first things that Obama did as President was talk to the Joint
Chiefs of Staff. As a result of that conversation he relieved (military
speak for "fired") the Commandant of the Marine Corps. That was reported
in the news. What was not reported was why.
Recently I talked to a
retired Marine Sergeant Major who was stationed at the Pentagon at the
time, and he told me why. Obama's first question to the Joint Chiefs was
"Is the military prepared to follow my order to fight the American
people." The Marine Corps Commandant answered "Sir, that would be an
illegal order, and none of my Marines would obey it." Obama relieved him
on the spot.
The US military (which Obama went a long way toward
corrupting in his 8 years in office) was the only thing standing between
us and a Communist dictatorship.

1) Why should we have to think about ways to coax criminals into following the law, because one third of our government seeks to aid and abet them? Cut off access to that one third.

2) What percentage of illegals are employed as opposed to just collecting entitlements, or subsist as gang members/drug dealers? I honestly don't know. Is it like the UK? How many would it cause to move back? Certainly not all of them, so we still need a solution to those that would remain.

USA Today is complete garbage. Two years ago they bought up virtually all the newspapers in NJ. Yeah, most of them were liberal anyway. But the local paper is now one long anti-Trump screed from start to finish. The only thing that's not is the obituaries--which are of course the only reason most of the people subscribe to it.

If conventional wisdom holds (a big question mark, especially recently), then we could lose to the Dems. There have been a lot of new registrations in general, and newly-registered voters - when they vote - tend to vote Dem. This election will also be a major rage outlet for the anti-Trump part of the electorate.

I don't understand it, but it is distinctly possible that the Dems retake at least the house on the strength of newly-registered voters. Again, this assumes that the conventional wisdom is correct.

Part of conventional wisdom is that midterms tend to go against incumbents.

But, I remember years ago (2014) hearing that midterms tend to have higher percentages of older voters than presidential election years.

If the second is true, then that means that Democrats have to get to presidential election year numbers without Republicans gaining anything in order for any sort of major blue wave to happen.

It seems like an untenable assumption at this point.

No, he's definitely not. Learned at a meet-and-greet last night for Dan Crenshaw (CD-2 candidate to replace Ted Poe) that this is the last election we (Texas) will have with the option for straight party ticket voting. Harris County lost a lot of good county-wide Republican held offices (Sheriff, DA, tons of Judges) in 2016 when the Houston city core dems turned out for Ms. Bollard-Leaner and voted straight dem ticket. Everyone at the meet-and-greet got juiced at that info.
Also learned that Harris County has a population that exceeds the population of 26 states. Get that? A single Texas county is more populous than over half the states.
Also, Dan Crenshaw is one bad ass former SEAL, would make a great pirate (eyepatch due to IED wounds in 'stan) and is going to be our Mr. Smith in Washington.

If Kavanaugh was one loss after a long series of wins for Democrats, I'd imagine it as potentially being invigorating for them in a way.

However, Kavanaugh will be one more loss in a long series dating back to 2014 when Democrats lost the Senate.

McConnell stops Garland.

Trump wins.

McConnell takes over the judiciary, essentially.

They were even laughing at her when she said it.

Note she said "shortchanged on our criminal justice system".
Of course, that doesn't mean that the government is doing an insufficient job of combating criminals, it means that they are doing an insufficient job of permitting minorities to commit crimes with impunity.

Of course her stupidity is irrelevant, in fact it's a plus. She won't be authoring any bills like Henry Waxman. That's a plus for us. She just represents an yes/no vote on any bill, and if she weren't representing the district, they'd just elect someone who would vote the same way, so we're neutral on that aspect.

Most of her constituents probably don't understand English, and if they did they wouldn't care, since she votes the right way and comes from the proper demographic group.

If you don't know who's running, then all you really have are those signs as a voter.

Statewide senate races with national implications and attention? That doesn't quite fit that small, low information model.

However, that being said - this one was different, and while I'm loathe to praise the Turtle, he deserves it here. This was NOT a typical, or even an extreme case when it comes to confirmations.

This has unfolded as the most radically bitter nomination/confirmation proceeding in US history, with the *possible* exception of Roger Taney.

Whatever comes of it, Grassley, McConnell and Graham have comported themselves honorably.

346 FWIW,
My analysis does not take into account various candidates, funding, etc. but is merely historical based on similar past elections. Haven't done research nor worked in the field for over ten years. I have not tracked the House and Senate polling this election year nor campaign spending. But, my guesstimate below is based on a knowledge of political history, past elections in similar circumstances, and past work in political campaigns.

The Kavanaugh confirmation, more or less, made this midterm more like a presidential year in nationalizing the election for House and Senate. Repubs are going home to their party and Dems were already unified. Independents are split but many vote on the economy status. The economy and war and peace issues which often sway elections currently favor Republicans. Furthermore, the whole Kavanaugh issue has sucked any air out of the Dems policy proposals for 2018. It is a negative agenda similar to the Republicans in 1998 based on opposition to who is in the White House.

The good news is that energized Republicans will help hapless House candidates in Republican districts and might save the House due to many of the open seats having a Republican tilt (aka Normal vote). Many of these are in suburban districts which is why the dems went all out on war on women motif--the backlash might occur if the NPR polling is correct among suburban married moms that dislike trump but now view the dems as a threat to their males in their life.

Unclear how it will affect the Senate races but as most of the competitive races are in red states--I suspect these will go in a wave--odds on for the Republicans at this time if the current trends continue. If even Dean Heller is apparently holding his ground in NV, then Republican gains will exist, potentially large ones--like 5-7 seats.

The parties also have different media strategies--republicans usually spend money on ads during the last month or two, dems spend it early as many of their voters are less engaged so the dems try to keep them riled up longer. Unfortunately for the Dems, is that they handed the Repubs the equivalent of massive free advertising about how awful the Dems behave--doubt that it inspired enraged Dems to vote any more than they already were.

I suspect that it also turned off independent voters as the Ford and subsequent allegations appear to be crumbling--emotional responses to testimony die quickly while the drip of changing stories, the truthfulness of the charges continue to bleed.

Right now, I would say that the Republicans hold the House with a 5-10 vote margin and keep the Senate with a 3-4 seat gain. If Kavanaugh's confirmation goes through without further hijinks and the whole FISA mess comes to a boil, then possibly greater gains.
Start looking at early voting patterns where partisanship is identified instead of polling. Any polls should now use likely voter screenings instead of registered voters as well. Registration time is now nearly up in most states.

BTW, I have used the Cook report and their ratings in the past for research--their accuracy can be spotty as the internet has largely supplanted their model with quicker and better information. To be fair, I used their info for primary open seat House races and campaign finance research as control variables. Part of the issue is that polling accuracy continues to swirl down the toilet and early voting has made the problem more acute--votes already cast cannot be recalled. Cook relies on polling and to some extent contacts among party strategists but even there polling is used.

I suspect, like Helmut Northpol at Suny who called the 2016 race for trump in March 2016, that the future of electoral predictions will rest more on other factors than polling.

I'm a pessimist sometimes, but not an eyore , but I believe a Kavanaugh confirmation depresses the Democrat base. The types of people who usually vote Democrat--but who are not crazy--are seeing the leadership of their party for what they are, a bunch of raving lunatics and evil posers and they may either jump to the other side, or simply stay home.

For every Millenial LIV Sanders or Occassional-Kotex brings in, another middle of the roader habitual Democrat voter leaves....

I agree. The only ones getting riled up are the loony left. I would think that relatively normal Democrats must be increasingly horrified by how unhinged the loony left has gotten.

I think I see the problem here. Strange, only the Fox News article names him.

There are apparently 15 justices on the ICJ, most from places where 'rule of law' is practiced more in the breach than the observance.

We apparently DO have one seat on that court.

For my part, I've been working on the guy who runs my company's partner program, to convince him to drop Nike's insulation products from our preferred vendor list.

I think he's actually already done it, and it's just a matter of getting the memo to our different local offices to stop offering the product to consumers.

At that level maybe, but the shooters? No way. I worked on a lot of vet's harleys over the last few years, and I ask them all the time what they would do if they got orders like that. Needless to say they are not amused in the slightest over a scenario like that. The last dude was a 2 tour iraq war marine who said in no uncertain terms that they would shoot any officer that gave an order to fire on americans, disappear with their gear, and steal a few tanks on the way out and go rogue. He said that was a universal attitude in the rank and file. From others that I have asked before and after him, I would say he was pretty accurate.

415 Confirming Kavanaugh might energize the Dem base, sure. But let's not forget, there's still a month to the election, and the Dems are not going to greet this setback by just lying down and sullenly licking their wounds until they can take revenge in November. There are 4 weeks where their loonies will act out and indulge their worst instincts to scream, riot and make themselves a stench in the nostrils of all normal people. It may not be the VICTORY that energizes the Republican vote so much as the reaction to the stinking Dem maniacs that get people to the polls.

Bollard-Leaner and voted straight dem ticket

It didn't help that the DA threw a rape victim in jail, to force her to testify; and that the victim was put into the general population and attacked.

421 till, though, whatever his official status, it's good to see people see it from an entirely different angle.

I recently saw this tweet from a guy who said that he's been anti-Trump for a while and liberal, but with the Kavanaugh hearings he's starting to believe that the press *is* the enemy of the people--it's impressive when you hear people outside of your bubble confirm your speculations.

I'm hearing from multiple sources that the Dems are *feeding* WalkAway with this Kavanaugh crap.

I haven't heard any true rabid Lefties say anything like this, but I have heard moderates, LIV's and what I call "habitual" Democrats say similar things as you describe.
People are seeing the media and the Democrat leadership for what they are--lying scumbags. It's undeniable they they've gone overboard on the Trump hate.

Also--remember the words of wisdom fro Osama Bin Laden: People like a strong horse.

422 Holy cats. Just received an email from my friend who was mugged in the parking lot of our local Walmart yesterday.

She was loading groceries in her car and left her purse unattended on the front seat (which I found stunning), and turned and saw the thug grab it and head for a new Ford pickup (which turned out to be stolen). She reached through the window and tried to grab her purse and the thug warned her he'd shoot her. She clung to the side of the truck, begging him to take her money but let her have her phone and wallet. He threw the truck in gear and took off, dragging her. She fell, and he nearly ran over one of her legs.

Anyhow, she got a new phone, same number, and has alerted security here (yeah, we live in one of those awful gated communities---like Dana Loesch) that he has her address, house, and car keys. The police have told her she'll never see her things again.

She is bruised, cut up, and shaken. And damned lucky to be alive.

I think she's probably given up her SJW status now.

Elemental servers sold for as much as $100,000 each, at profit margins of as high as 70 percent, according to a former adviser to the company. Two of Elemental's biggest early clients were the Mormon church, which used the technology to beam sermons to congregations around the world, and the adult film industry, which did not.

Murkowski will vote based on whether it will help her or not in Alaska.

They all will. So if one will fare better with a neutral or no vote, they will do it because they have enough votes.

Murkowski and Collins love the fawning and spotlight on them. Makes them feel important. Same for Flake, the weasel. He said he would vote Yes if they looked further. It was done. He voted yes to move it from committee anyway.

I think they will all vote yes, maybe even Heitkamp and Manchin because they are losing ground in the polls.

I don't see any Ds crossing over if that's the case. Screw the bipartisanship BS from Flake. If Collins said there's nothing in the report and Flake agrees - and that was the whole purpose of the additional report - they'll vote yes.

I do NOT see how Murk votes no. Not given Mitchel's report on Ford plus Ford's ex (yes, perhaps with an axe to grind) with his letter. What's in a no vote for her? A lost seat on some committee and less federal dollars? They'll pump oil from ANWAR and the eskimos won't see a bit of difference. She'll have the wrath of Lindsey. And I do believe he will hold it against her. Not so much with Collins, but what is she going to say was her was the deciding factor? His temperment? Has she seen Lindsey's lately?

466 Re 362, you are welcome.

I worked in campaigns at the state, local, and national level for about a decade of my life and was a numbers guy. Then I studied the stuff and did research on it. That being said, you get a gut level feeling beyond the numbers at a certain point.

The Kavanaugh hearings and the reaction to it makes me think that the wind is now at the Republican's backs rather than the Dems. If the FISA drop occurs after the confirmation, the USMCA treaty, economy roaring, no war, etc, then the Dems are running on the Republicans are big meanies. Not a compelling banner to fight under. View most polling now as suspect, know several pollsters and non-response bias is seriously affecting results. If you must use them, only look at trends or where the results are beyond 6-8 percent in margin depending on polling size. Otherwise, a good get out the vote program counts for about 5 pct points but only works if your voters are energized. Most House polling other than expensive candidate internal polls is crappy due to the difficulties in surveying districts versus states. A bit better for states but even there predicting who will show up is difficult. Easiest to do polling on the national level. If the NPR Marist poll is to be believed, a +2 Dem advantage is negligible and a good GOTV gameplan by Repubs can easily overcome that.

Watch races where the party committees commit or remove commitments to spend money. They have the most accurate polls that money can buy and they are placing their bets like experienced handicappers. If you start seeing Republican cmte money showing up in long shots like NJ Senate, then a true red wave is coming.

I told her I had a thug follow me through the Sam's Club parking lot (next door to our Walmart) years ago. I had a cart load of food for a church dinner, and my car was the last on a row. Thug started walking faster and faster toward me, and I knew what was coming. I decided to abandon the cart and groceries, jump in my car, and take off. At that exact moment, an alert security guard drove up to the guy and asked him what he was up to. I loaded the groceries and left, and was so shaken I could barely drive.

Our son (as yours probably has) has taught me to always be situationally aware, head on a swivel. I'm about to take off to pick up a few things I need at a local mall, where a few years ago, a 15 y.o. yute shot a 61 y.o. woman, robbed her, and stole her new car. She barely survived. And he did this, as the Walmart thug did, in broad daylight.

All of their councils from Human Rights to Women's Rights are stacked with Muslims. They cited Israel as committing the most egregious violations against women's rights in the middle east.

That's what makes them such a joke. That's why when they publish a report on how the Rohingyas (Muslims) had been mistreated by Myanmar, you know it's total bullshit. When you look into the facts, you see that they brought it on themselves due to terrorist attacks. I hope Myanmar stands firm as well and just ignores them.

522 whig with some good solid polling/campaign strategery observations.

Someone yesterday recalled an interesting factoid to keep in mind, one that doesn't get much attention or recall. Dems on the Senate level underperform their final polling numbers, by up to 6 points. Based on past history (not an infallible guide, just above chicken entrails, but still).

And note that there's a much, much larger GOP GOTV operation this cycle (reportedly) than in recent history.

Actually, given the fundamentals (economy, virtually all "national" news with a political angle), and the number/nature of Senate seats up, and despite the historic pattern, the GOP *should* do very well this cycle. At least as well as 2002, but probably better. 524 That's why when they publish a report on how the Rohingyas (Muslims) had been mistreated by Myanmar, you know it's total bullshit. "

I've seen the sad sad stories about them in the MSM, and I tried to get worked up about it, but honestly I just couldn't come up with a shit to give.

Part of it was me remembering how Burma (Myanmar) was one of the most brutal and repressive regimes anywhere in the world for 30 years while their government was a puppet for the Chinese, and no one in the MSM ever said anything about it, or cared. So maybe they suddenly have decided to care now, good for them. Maybe in another 30 years I will too. But probably not.

No way he's doing this for free.
He likely got NBC, Showtime to pay for the rights to interview Swetnik. However, he currently owes people millions of dollars from his coffee venture, and just had an ugly divorce - both he and his client are in debt.

Who's paying the bills?
My guess: the Clintons, though probably not directly - maybe it's via Demand Justice, Fusion GPS or some other org.

553 I have a suspicion that their polling is partially off because of assumptions they made about turnout months ago that won't pan out."

I know in Texas that one of the biggest problems is that the pollsters focus their efforts on the 15 highest population counties (the major cities) and ignore the other 239 counties. The assumption is that they are all roughly similar - but the problem is that the 15 large population counties are the Democrat strongholds, and so in their poll numbers they end up polling Democrat majority areas and not even bothering to ask anyone in the Republican dominated areas.

The assumption that the State is homogenous is fatally flawed.

594 I remain puzzled that Manchin even has a chance. The governor there switched parties last year. That sort of partisan shift is extremely rare in a state, usually denotes a complete re-ordering of labels and affiliations in the dominant political currents. Barring individual, personal popularity + inertia as counters, swimming against that tide usually is hopeless. Jane, sorry to hear about your friend! Glad she wasn't hurt any worse, too.

My mom was mugged a few years ago as she was entering an upscale
mall from the parking garage --- with my then 10 year old son. After she
entered the first set of doors into Macy's the guy rammed her from
behind and grabbed her purse, dragging her ~ 5 ft while she clung to the
strap. This was at around 4pm on a Monday.

I am confident he remains far, far less than useless on huge issues like border security and immigration. Maybe re-election will produce some moderation on that idiocy, but I'm not holding my breath.

679 Hell, I heard the story about Obama and the Marine general years ago. Definitely in his first term. Didn't have a strong source, so I let it alone. But it's not that new.

681 Part of it was me remembering how Burma (Myanmar) was one of the most
brutal and repressive regimes anywhere in the world for 30 years while
their government was a puppet for the Chinese, and no one in the MSM
ever said anything about it, or cared. So maybe they suddenly have
decided to care now, good for them. Maybe in another 30 years I will
too. But probably not.

A good atlas demonstrates the lie. How many Buddhist countries are left? Bamiyan Buddhas wave bye-bye. No wonder the muslims want Rakhine State.

683 510,
The deal on polling is landlines and cell phones. The old model used landlines where the address, name, etc. could be reasonably determined and people used to answer the phone. Thus, random digit dialing often presented a pretty reliable sample.

This lasted up until the cheap telecom revolution where a deluge of spam calls began and response rates began to drop like a rock. An increasing number of people also went unlisted. Landlines were useful for all sorts of reasons and area code sorting worked to determine whether or not they were in the district polled. It was also easy to conduct cross checks on likely voter screenings due to a known name and address which allows cross checks to voter history files. This world is now largely gone. For that reason, Gallup got out of the presidential race polling due to their outdated model.

Cell phone non-response started out as higher due to the old way that you were charged per call. Then, people started moving with cellphones but keeping their original cellphone number including area codes. Now, with Random digit dialing, you don't know where these voters might vote and makes it difficult to check on likely voter status. Screening questions help but people lie as claiming to vote is a socially acceptable answer. The Univ. of Michigan NES (national election survey) which is conducted post election has got to ridiculous levels of people claiming that they voted but did not (15-20 percent the last I checked). Adding screening questions helps but each additional question increases non-response or partial responses where people just hang up. Due to phone scams etc. and even cruise ship stuff posing as polls, non-response is a very serious issue.

To compound problems, young people do not use the phone like old folks--texting and other means serve for that. Furthermore, to make sure that you have an accurate sample of the electorate, you are often required to oversample groups such as blacks, hispanics, very young voters 18-24, to have any information about voting and correct your sample for the expected partisanship of the district/state. You should also triangulate to determine from valid statistical models who is likely to vote and be able to ask enough questions to determine that. Voter intensity is still not well measured in polling. The smaller the district, the worse the polling problem is to get a adequate sized likely voter sample to correctly estimate the district. That means expensive as you have to survey a much larger number of people to make sure that the composition of likely voters is correct. It is a bit easier on state level and the easiest on the national level.

The secret sauce that each pollster uses to determine likely voters is basically their guess on the likely voter based on their survey screening questions. Last that I checked, registered voter lists average about a five point Dem advantage in polling and all adults somewhat over that. The likely voter screening then has to determine which Dems get to the polls--this is why the Dems have went to identity politics and the politics of outrage in order to motivate their voters to the polls instead of policies. The problem is that outrage gets exhausting and you have to keep ramping it up and it risks inflaming the opposite party's voters. At some point, the perpetual sky is falling schtick fails to motivate particularly if there is a lack of success. If the voters in 2018 give a good slap in the face to Dems in the election, then the more reasonable Dems might tone it down. For the health of the polity, we need a red wave in 2018.

685 Aw, hell, you just made me flash to a Lena Dunham "Girls" scene with nekkid Lena and Michael Moore.

There was a tv series last year (or the year before)that did that - the main character had a dirty secret, and she flashes back to a one night stand with Moore and EWWWWWWWW EYE BLEACH!!

689 I'm getting another .308 (shaddup) and I'm trying to decide between getting a BM-59 or another M1A.

Pros, cons, suggestions all welcome.

The M1A is simply the best rifle in my cabinet. If I can grab only one ... it would be the M1A.

691 668,
Do you want a historical obscurity that might bring higher prices in the future--get the BM 59. Or do you want a rifle that you can shoot-get the M1A which has superior accuracy and parts availability in the future. I am also assuming that you are not talking about a genuine NFA select fire BM59 but those that use converted Garand receivers. If you do get the BM59--treat those mags like gold as they are now over $50 bucks each--I would also get some spare parts like an op rod while they are available.

On one of the RV forums I haunt someone said they were over nighting in a Walmart lot when a motorhome pulled in with several Suburbans and guys wearing things in their ears. Justice and Mrs. Thomas. Guy said it was the most secure sleep he ever had.

Nebraska National Forest is the largest man made forest in the US, and was the largest in the world for many years. Teddy Roosevelt sent a man out to plant trees in the boonies, and decades later someone checked it out and found trees still grew there.

She posted pics of her scrapes and bruises. I'm just glad her husband and four grown children aren't planning her funeral. And for crying out loud, she grew up in the city of Chicago!

Maybe you, or your son should offer to take her out to the range, and get some practice with using a pistol. Her experience is exactly the scenario that concealed carry is meant to protect against.
