EMT 09/22/18 Enough already.

I'm just one voter.

But this voter's decision on whether to vote in November will be based on whether the current Republicans in office actually vote on confirming a new SC justice next week.

Stop playing silly games and get your job done.

11 Good Morning Morons; today is Saturday, September 22, 2018. On this day in 1823 Joseph Smith supposedly found the golden plates after being directed by God through the Angel Moroni to the place where they were buried. These 'plates', which none in the public has ever seen, supposedly contained the text of what became the Book of Mormon. I have no problem with the Mormon sect, after all they are Christians, however, I think all this Angel Moroni stuff is a load of hogwash.

This line of lying speculation comes with no evidence what-so-ever. Typical NBC. Fake News indeed. I have some news for you liars at NBC, fly ash is not discharged into any river, lake, or other such impondment that has flow to a river. It goes into what is called 'settling ponds' which have to be manually pumped to remove water after the fly ash has been separated out.

Other online reports also cite she was suffering from Gender Dysphoria and in the process of transitioning.

And that she committed suicide after shooting her co-workers.

So a neighbor asked my what the transgenderism had to do with the story.

And I told her that it had as much to do with the story as when a former military member commits a crime, that the prior military service is always mentioned.

Oh, and the roughly 40% suicide rate of those suffering from gender dysphoria.

Always remember, Kavanaugh wrote the Starr Report -- a report which went into much detail (some say perhaps too much detail) of the Clinton sexual tryst with Monica Lewinsky. If there was anyone that the (D)'s were going to drag through the mud it was him.

They've known for years he was on the 'short list' of SC candidates and they've had years to prepare. This is a well prepared operation, despite it being made to appear somewhat last minute.

The Ford woman will never testify under oath because she knows the real truth.

Heh, yeah.
First, Joe DiGenoa made s strange comment about Ford on Laura Ingraham's show - he said to ask PGA players about Ford. That's it, no details.

As for NYT, who leaked this? Apparently it was leaked to a reporter that Comey favored for leaks. Trump will fire Rosenstein if/when he feels like it, not when Comey, McCabe, Mueller or whoever decides it should be done by stirring up the outrage mob.

*We know that there have been plans in place for over a year to mass protest if Rosenstein is fired - wouldn't the Resistance just love such a distraction/mid-term GoTV event like that right about now?

55 Hey, I'm on a roll.

The Book of Wisdom, Chapter 2 (tell me it does not ring true today)

Reason they offer, yet reason all amiss. Their hearts tell them, So brief our time here, so full of discomfort, and death brings no remedy! Never a man yet made good his title to have come back from the grave! Whence came we, none can tell; and it will be all one hereafter whether we lived or no. What is our breath, but a passing vapour; what is our reason, but a spark that sets the brain whirling? Quench that spark, and our body is turned to ashes; like a spent sigh, our breath is wasted on the air; like the cloud-wrack our life passes away, unsubstantial as the mist yonder sun disperses with its ray, bears down with its heat. Time will surely efface our memory, and none will mark the record of our doings. Only a passing shadow, this life of ours, and from its end there is no returning; the doom is sealed, and there is no acquittal.

Come then (they say), let us enjoy pleasure, while pleasure is ours; youth does not last, and creation is at our call; of rich wine and well spiced take we our fill. Spring shall not cheat us of her blossoming; crown we our heads with roses ere they wither; be every meadow the scene of our wanton mirth. Share we the revels all alike, leave traces everywhere of our joyous passing; no part or lot have we but this.

Helpless innocence shall lie at our mercy; not for us to spare the widow, to respect the venerable head, grown white with years. Might shall be our right, weakness count for proof of worthlessness. Where is he, the just man? We must plot to be rid of him; he will not lend himself to our purposes. Ever he must be thwarting our plans; transgress we the law, he is all reproof, depart we from the traditions of our race, he denounces us. What, would he claim knowledge of divine secrets, give himself out as the son of God? The touchstone, he, of our inmost thoughts; we cannot bear the very sight of him, his life so different from other men's, the path he takes, so far removed from theirs! No better than false coin he counts us, holds aloof from our doings as though they would defile him; envies the just their future happiness, boasts of a divine parentage. Put we his claims, then, to the proof; let experience shew what his lot shall be, and what end awaits him. If to be just is to be God's son indeed, then God will take up his cause, will save him from the power of his enemies. Outrage and torment, let these be the tests we use; let us see that gentleness of his in its true colours, find out what his patience is worth. Sentenced let him be to a shameful death; by his own way of it, he shall find deliverance.

So false the calculations that are blinded by human malice! The secret purposes of God they might not fathom; how should they foresee that holiness is requited, how should they pass true award on a blameless life? God, to be sure, framed man for an immortal destiny, the created image of his own endless being; but, since the devil's envy brought death into the world, they make him their model that take him for their master.

When you read left wing newspapers which appear to support Trump or Kavanaugh in some fashion your radar should be set to maximum level.

When DiFi was criticized for waiting so long to release the Ford letter -- know that that was part of the strategy. The criticism is just cover smoke.

Rosenstein? Probably an attempt to gin up (D) voter outrage if Trump were to fire him.

THIS.

Much as I can understand the sentiment behind not voting in November if Kavanaugh is allowed to be torpedoed by the GOP (yes, it will be solely their fault), the repercussions of letting the Dems take power are unimaginable, even if PDT has two more years.

I think they will not only try to wipe him out but pull out every stop to steal 2020 and then openly overthrow the government and seize permanent power. Or try to.

2020 depending on what happens in November will be for all the marbles.,

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at September 22, 2018 06:49 AM (/9p9e)

78 >>Please, ya'll...could we wait and see what happens on Monday?

Yes.

Per the Breitbart article:

If Grassley and his fellow Republicans on the Judiciary Committee stick to their announced plan, the committee will convene for a vote Monday. If, as expected, the Republican majority votes to approve Kavanaugh's confirmation, it will pass to the full Senate, where a vote for cloture, setting up a final full-Senate vote, can be taken Wednesday morning. That final vote could then be taken Thursday, allowing Kavanaugh to take a seat on the Supreme Court in time of the start of the Court's October term.

and good grief, Grassley extended again? man, I was sure I'd this morning it would be a done deal ... why even make a deadline just to show you have no integrity on deadlines?
I think they can still vote Monday, and PERHAPS they really would prefer she testify since they (perhaps) have some ways of revealing she is lying. Or perhaps they KNOW she won't, so by giving her more chances, it just shows she is only pushing a lie.

R's seem to have had the "she needs to be heard" strategy from the start, and are revealing she only wants to be heard in favorable settings, not under oath. This activist's (Soros funded) recovered memory only popped up when (I hear) Kavanaugh made Romeny's list. She doesn't want to answer those hard questions.

90 Personally, I'm blaming Grassley less for this than I am blaming Flake, Murkowski, Collins, etc. On paper, Republicans control the Senate. In reality, they don't, not as long as the easily-flipped squishes can make themselves the most important people in the room by stamping their feet and demanding to be pandered to. I live in Oregon so my vote is almost assuredly not making a difference, but I vote anyway. If worse comes to worst and we get a floor vote and fall short of 50 because a few "R"s thought twelve chances wasn't enough and we should have given her at least sixteen, that also means that the Democrats were united against him as well, and we'll need the motivation to recapture every single one of those red-state Democrat seats and render the RINOs powerless for next year's renomination and confirmation.

"Despite the fact that the July 30 letter remains hidden, my committee has been investigating the allegations and has heard from multiple witnesses since Sunday. Ms Katz has discussed Dr. Ford's allegations in numerous media interviews and said on TV Monday morning that Dr. Ford wants to share her account with the Senate Judiciary Committee. It's Friday night and nothing's been agreed to despite our extensive efforts to make testimony possible," Grassley said. "I'm extending the deadline for possible response yet again to 10:00 this evening. I'm providing a notice of a vote to occur Monday in the event that Dr. Ford's attorney's don't respond or Dr. Ford decides not to testify. In the event that we can come to a reasonable resolution, as I've been seeking all week, then I will postpone the committee vote to accommodate her testimony. We cannot continue to delay."

Totally guess: there's no cost *if* it doesn't jeopardize Monday plans. This assumes that he's extending the time for her to decide to testify, but NOT the date she would have to appear.

Also, if he's holding firm on refusing her other demands (i.e. refusing to accommodate that Kav goes first, no lawyer interrogation, etc.) then he's doing a bit of theater to make himself and the Republicans *appear* accommodating knowing full well an additional 24 hours to decide won't matter; she still refuses if she doesn't get her demanded appearance conditions. This may also be theater to placate squishes like Collins and Flake.

161 "I still think Ford agrees to testify on Wednesday this morning and then pulls another "I can't do it right now, I still feel icky" come Tuesday afternoon."

It still amazes me that people rule out that she is a bald-faced liar or has no recollection of anything that may have happened to her.

And then there is pretty much the fact that an attempted rapist continues to rape so I wouldn't be surprised that the D's have 5 more paid activists ready to roll.
Watching the R's continue to try and play the compassionate adults in the room has run it's course.
It was a big mistake to give in to her time demands, especially given her details on her claim are only 1/4 of the way filled in.

Oh, and the bit about her telling her doctor about "an" event a year ago. There is a list out there of potential picks that have been made public and I'm sure that by now that a woman is prepared to step up and say that they were raped by their designated judge.

It is a way to simple to go with this he said/she said nonsense that happened decades ago and IMHO, should be completely ignored if there is no police report or something that can prove their claims from that time period.

O.k., but it's odd to remember the *age* that you were without tying it to some event--from which you could calculate a year date. So, if you spent 7th grade in Hawaii, and somebody asks you when you were in Hawaii, you could put that in the context of the school year that you experienced there, and say, "When I was in 7th grade." But to say, "I remember that I was 15" doesn't have an obvious context. Maybe it's just me.

190 11 Good Morning Morons; today is Saturday, September 22, 2018.

I use mine a lot (older Android), mostly for an ebook reader. I've gotten to where I don't carry a laptop on trips, even. I don't know if that is because I'm getting old or because the tablet serves all my needs for that short amount of time, so ymmv.

I like Android tablets because they let you control what you do. I REALLY like that they have memory card slots so you can carry what you want without worrying much about space limitations.

We have an ipad and, while it is slick, I borderline hate it. It's great to use on the surface, but it doesn't have expandable memory (no slot), and it often won't do what you ask it to do with deleting movies or videos that are taking up space. It really is infuriating to work with sometimes. Add to that the go-between requirements of itunes in order to connect it to your computer and it's just too much of a PITA for not much reward ***unless*** you're fully dedicated to the apple system and have iphones and i-whatevers everywhere. Then I'd imagine they'd all talk to one another and you'd put up with the PITA stuff just for convenience. And that's how apple gets you, now that I think about it.

Amazon's stuff is cheap but I'm guessing they're monitoring you and everything you do in exchange for that slight price reduction.

That's pretty much where I've gotten to, too.

Androids can vary wildly in build quality and screens ($80-$400+). Ipads are gorgeous and well made but ultimately want - and will exert - absolute and total control over everything you are allowed to do that isn't superficial screen-time stuff. It's part of what makes them "just work," and that's good if that's all you ask of them. I personally prefer the greater user options of Android, but they both have their good qualities.

I think I've seen Samsung's for about $200 at Costco. Might be a good start.

Family is stirring so I'm off to make pancakes.

Good luck.

All Grassley has to do is maintain the requirement that Ford testifies under oath and she'll never show up. Not that lying to congress or giving false testimony is any big deal.

I am pretty disappointed in Grassley's overall management of the process though. He let it get way out of hand. The Senate is a silly place.

262 hey Bruce, if you are gonna be working on the tablet you should look at either an Ipad or a nice Android. Samsung is a good brand.

Check which apps you think you will need most first.

If you are just gonna be watching streaming videos, browsing the web, and reading ebooks, the Kindle Fire is good value. But as was pointed out upthread, apps are a limited subset of what's on the Google play. It is possible to.sideload but it's a big pain to do.

I think one main difference between all three is how idiot proof they are:
A regular Android tablet will give you the most freedom and great bargains, but also the most rope to mess up or get malwared etc. It's basically the wild west.
An Ipad will give you a lot of apps and function but you pay $$$
A Kindle Fire is the most limited but you can basically treat it like an appliance, and it does have excellent customer support.

281 Here is an excerpt of the latest letter from the lawyers to Grassley - do not have breakable objects in reach while reading ---

The imposition of aggressive and artificial deadlines regarding the date and conditions of any hearing has created tremendous and unwarranted stress on Dr. Ford. Your cavalier treatment of a sexual assault survivor who has been doing her best to cooperate with the committee is completely inappropriate

The 10 PM deadline is arbitrary. Its sole purpose is to bully Dr. Ford and deprive her of the ability to make a considered decision that has life-altering implications for her and her family. She has already been forced out of her home, and continues to be subjected to harassment, hate mail, and death threats. Our modest request is that she be given an additional day to make her decision.

Right now there is a committee meeting scheduled for Monday to vote on nominations and a couple of bills. Kavanaugh's nomination is at the top of the list.

Grassley has offered a Wednesday hearing to Ford. If that happens, after the hearing it's expected that he'll move to vote Kavanaugh out of the committee and to the full Senate. If that offer doesn't come to fruition, the committee will meet at 10 a.m. on Monday and at the top of the list is to vote on Kavanaugh.

If the committee vote happens on Monday, the latest Kavanaugh will be confirmed is Friday evening or early Saturday. If it happens on Wednesday, the latest he'll be confirmed is late Sunday or early Monday, just in time for the new SCOTUS term.

320 A Senate where we have 51 on paper but only 47 or 48 in reality that doesn't get much done, that's one thing. If we can get past 50 in actual legitimate R senators, ones who will actually vote for things and not decline on grounds that Trump is being a meanyhead, then we've got a shot at some real legislation. Even more so if the minority throws enough tantrums to get the filibuster rule tossed.

Agreed. This whole process reminds me of how things work out in about 90% of lawsuits, which most people never see, and it's frustrating - it's more like high stakes poker than anything else. One side makes demands, the other side makes counter demands, both set deadlines, one breaks the deadlines, one cuts off all negotiations, then negotiations reopen, then they break down again, and then, as the witnesses are all seated and the jury is filing in, a settlement is announced and everyone goes home. (and it's usually the exact same settlement that could have happened the day after the lawsuit is filed)

I myself have been sitting in the courtroom several times when that has happened. That's how all negotiations go these days.

Confirmation of judges and executive branch positions is entirely the Senate's duty. The House only gets involved if someone needs to be impeached and removed from office. The House impeaches, the Senate decides whether or not to convict.

There's a memorable riff on this idea built into the end of I, Claudius, for anyone who remembers that miniseries. (and admittedly this is Author Robert Graves thoughts) and it portrays Claudius, at the end of his life, accepting Nero as his successor even though he knows Nero is a psycopathic killer, because he tells himself Rome will only clean up its corruption if it goes all the way to the bottom.

Of course, reality is that once the leadership goes all the way to the bottom, it stays at the bottom, and the nation proceeds to destroy itself for good. See today's Venezuela for modern confirmation of the observation.

This is the Rubicon. If we give up in protest, they win and they make Christianity a crime, they make the 'OK" sign a jailable offense. BTW, there's a great podcast at Powerline. The guests are Julie Kelly and "Lucretia", and they say the words no man can utter. I first heard them from my wife. In the beginning, one of them says "Every girl knows how to handle this. If it's never happened to you, you must be really ugly." Wow.

My own take is that she'll manage to somehow agree to Weds, then she'll have to do her hair, or her grandmother will die, or anything to delay again. From all we see, she's a real wackadoodle basket case; someone they don't want on the stand. That's why they don't want women questioning her. When she inevitably goes bananas, they could yell "patriarchy" if it were the senators. As it is, she'll just expose herself as an overaged snowflake.

So she'll agree to the later date, then back out, figuring Grassely will cave again. Frankly, my money's on her.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at September 22, 2018 06:08 AM (mpXpK)

It's not a question of Mormonism being basically Christian with a few other peripheral odd beliefs bolted on (like Jewish American Indians, disproven by DNA). Joseph Smith created a fundamentally different religion. He just kept certain labels such as "God" or "Jesus" but assigned them different meanings.

Christians think that God and Jesus are necessary beings. We are contingent. We may possess the Imago Dei but we are not sinless (by nature), omnipotent, possessing aseity, etc.

Mormons OTOH believe that God and humans are basically the same kind of being. God was once a man from another planet who became God of this world, and we can do the same if we follow the rules. It is completely arbitrary that God happened to precede us. Had we been the first to exist, we could have been God's god. We could have been his savior.

They also believe that Jesus and Lucifer are brothers, although according to Christianity Jesus (the second person of the trinity) is uncreated unlike Lucifer. It's also a salvation by works type religion. So underneath the hood, it's not really very Christian at all. And look at all the backpedaling they've had to do over the years, from polygamy to saying that black people's skin color was proof that they were "cursed" and could not occupy a ministerial office.

I do agree with your sentiment "I have no problem with the Mormon sect". They are for the most part decent, upright, moral people (well, except for their politicians, but that's true of every religion, ex. Pelosi). They are infinitely preferable to the depraved secular left who completely lack a moral harness.

375 "It's not a question *of Mormonism being basically Christian with a few
other peripheral odd beliefs bolted on (like Jewish American Indians,
disproven by DNA). Joseph Smith created a fundamentally different
religion."

That is a fact.

Smith said the angel or "God," or whoever, told him that all of Christendom as it existed in his day (meaning Prot and Catholic in the U.S) was irredeemably corrupted and without the vital truths that could get someone to Heaven...thus a new revelation was needed to restore those lost truths, and Smith was the guy picked to find the magic golden plates. That led to what you describe: a wholly different religion that just uses many of the same labels, but which have been fundamentally redefined.

His fundamental mistake is one common to people even today: confusing Christendom and all it entails (Prot, Catholic and otherwise) with actual, unadulterated biblical faith in Christ via the saving good news of God's grace.

In 99.9% of cases, where you find one you cannot find the other.

This is Ford's attorney, standing among protestors, saying on camera that they will resist Jeff Session's selection as Attorney General. Nice.

377 OK, I'll wait for Monday's developments. In the meantime, prayer for justice. Read that two ways.

I'd always maintained that God didn't care which way the country lurched as we passed through time, but Trump's miracle election has caused me to rethink this. I believe he is the latest of imperfect people God chose to carry out his plans.

I just hope some on our side publish history books.

378 Does anyone actually expect the Washington Generals to be trying to win? Senator Grassley dribbles the ball off of his own foot for the 5th time in a row. If the future of the country weren't at stake it would actually be funny watching the Republicans snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

380 Maybe I'm being insensitive, but...Ford says she was groped (while clothed) by a drunk high school boy at a party when she was herself a teenager. And, apparently, it wasn't even bad enough where she felt she needed to report it or even tell her parents or friends. I don't get why the Dems and the media are treating her like she went through the most horrific ordeal ever.

Compare it to someone like Elizabeth Smart, kidnapped at 14 and held as a sex slave for months. She testified, faced her accuser in court, seven years later, and has spoken often about her ordeal publicly.

It's just hard for me to believe that the Dems/media really believe that what Ford claims was all that bad.

381 "It's just hard for me to believe that the Dems/media really believe that what Ford claims was all that bad. "

"...actually happened."

Fixed!

They have to have a Senate Floor vote at any cost. Need to put these Red
State Dems on record. that is why flake is so crucial being on the Jud
Committee.

Posted by: Jonah at September 22, 2018 08:22 AM (CVCKl)

Agreed. But the red dems aren't voting for him - see McAssKill. Say something about his prior writings/opinion on whether the president can be indicted and "dark money" campaign contributions.

383 This is why I'm no longer a Republican. Changed my party. They can't call me, they can't count on me for money and I hang up when they do their ridiculous polls. Live in worry oh spineless ones.

384 If Republicans do not confirm a conservative Justice with a majority in the senate, they are worst than useless.

Good for you Sally. So your determining factor is money and being called. Great principles.

Posted by: Steve_in_SoCal at September 22, 2018 09:42 AM (b8J4P)

386 I understand the frustration, but not voting for conservatives because of liberal attacks sounds - frankly - like not the good kind of moron talk.

You would surrender to the people who are attacking you because you don't think the defense offered on your behalf is strong enough?

I hope people reconsider.

Posted by: doomed at September 22, 2018 09:52 AM (Jw4ci)

388 Wrong answer. The correct response to one or two backstabbers is not to punish the the 95% who have their head on straight, it is to go punish the democrats at the polls for pulling this kind of sh!t and give the Republicans a big enough majority that they can afford to peel off one or two of their losers in any given vote and still prevail. This kind of crap should motivate, not cause true conservatives to crawl off into a corner and curl up into a ball while they snivel.

389 Flood Grassleys office with calls and emails. Stop kowtowing to the left. Confirm Kavanaugh on Monday.

Posted by: Andshesaidthis1 at September 22, 2018 10:18 AM (KbQIV)

390 It's been ten minutes since I last checked, so this may be wildly outdated info by now:

I think the current deadline for Ford to "confirm" she's "decided" to show up at some future date uncertain ... is 10PM ET tonite.

Not reassured by Grassley's late nite tweeting.

We're going to lose this one, aren't we? It's sinking in.

Posted by: gp at September 22, 2018 10:26 AM (mk9aG)

391 I used to feel that way too. BUT, any Rep is better than 10 Dems. If the Dems win then not one new judge at any Fed level will be appointed. Just think about that. If not Kavanaugh then Trump will try again, unless the Dems win. Remember Hillary is still not Prez.

Posted by: LYNN HARGROVE at September 22, 2018 10:42 AM (jHdOj)

392 Not voting in November will. Not hurt Flake at all.

Posted by: Anchovy at September 22, 2018 11:06 AM (srWwQ)

393 Yeah, that'll show Flake, put the democrats in power. Idiot.

And yet, how many times do the Repubs back down in the face of Leftist retardation and sell us down the river? How many Repubs actually take a stand and don't constantly equivocate on just about everything? I'm glad that the answer isn't ALL OF THEM, but it sure is darn close, and I'd rather we jump into the pool instead of slowly inch our way in. Trump has certainly done well with his judge appointments but is seems to be to little much too late...

395 It's not a question *of Mormonism being basically Christian with a few
other peripheral odd beliefs bolted on (like Jewish American Indians,
disproven by DNA).

There are many issues with Mormonism. But, at its core, it isn't monotheistic. They hold that if you do x, y, and z that you get your own universe and become a god. That's tough to reconcile with anything from Abraham on down.

398 Every Mormon I've met has been so morally upright as to be considered square, which I count as a good thing to be.

On the other hand, every Muslim I've met has been friendly, generous, almost obsequious. So observer bias, plus small sample sizes.

399 Sorry, I'm voting Republican no matter what.

The hell we will go through if the Democrats get power back is not worth my making some kind of statement by staying home.

400 Ditto, I'm voting Republican no matter what.

Sin-enema in the Senate is not acceptable.

Posted by: Zionist Redneck at September 22, 2018 01:40 PM (i4jWn)

401 It's not about the current R clowns in congress. If you don't vote or vote D, you are cutting Trump off at the knees. The current crop is better than having D's in charge of either house.

Posted by: GlobalTrvlr at September 22, 2018 02:39 PM (fKlwN)

402 So seriously, your plan is if the GOP lets you down, you're just going to stay home and let the chips fall where they may, even if means the Dems retake the House?

I'm pissed too, but that just sounds plumb stupid. Cutting off your nose to spite your face.
