Thread before the Gardening Thread, September 22 [KT]

farcedem.jpg

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Man, this week has been depressing. Dr_No lightens it up a little with the graphic above.

Here's a visual response to the conduct of the (cough*cough) 'democrats' during the SCOTUS appointment hearings ... it seems congruent with the etymology of the word 'farce,' too:

"from Middle French farce "comic interlude in a mystery play" (16c.), literally "stuffing," from Old French farcir "to stuff," (13c.), from Latin farcire "to stuff, cram," - and now it's available as a T-shirt ... life is good ... enjoy ...

You can vote on the graphic here. Might want to use a spare email address.

I'm not going to say much about this week's big fiasco, but I do have a couple of points that keep coming back to me.

1. As far as I am concerned, one of the main reasons NOT to believe the accuser is that she comes from an environment overrun by leftist professors and students. And they think like the academic quoted below. Byron York reports, via John Hayward, who wonders why the guy quoted should be allowed to remain a law professor:

Just in case: In NYT, law professor argues Ford allegation against Kavanaugh doesn't have to actually be true to disqualify him for SCOTUS. 'Credible' is good enough. 'The existence of credible allegations against Judge Kavanaugh should be disqualifying.'

There's someone familiar with Obama's Title IX rules, I would bet. Watch where you send your boys to school.

2. This:

credibly accused.jpg

And remember the Satanic ritual abuse cases?

From Quillette

I am starting to like Quillette. Here's an interesting piece on how hard it is to keep things heterodox even at Heterodox Academy.

The Left virtually owns the institution and a fair number of professors in the humanities and social sciences view conservatives with open contempt. Indeed, Heterodox Academy has been repeatedly attacked by leftist academics who accuse it of being a shelter for conservative saboteurs whose true intent is to poison the academy with their rancid ideology. Other critics have been even less gracious.
This places the leaders of Heterodox Academy in a difficult position. On the one hand, if they want to grow the Academy they will need to reach more faculty. This, in turn, means they will have to appeal to those on the Left--the group most suspicious of or antagonistic to Heterodox Academy's mission. On the other hand, these efforts may in turn alienate faculty in the center or on the Right. .

Preachers of the Great Awokening,

From the sun-blanched beaches of California to the snow-covered cities of New England, a religious fervor is sweeping the United States. PhD-toting preachers spread the faith with righteous zeal, denouncing those who violate its sacred principles. . . .

In the following article, we will explore this quasi-religion, Wokeness, as a status system that functions predominantly to distinguish white elites from the white masses (whom we will call hoi polloi). It does this by offering a rich signalling vocabulary for traits and possessions such as education, intelligence, openness, leisure, wealth, and cosmopolitanism, all of which educated elites value . . . From this perspective, the preachers of the Great Awokening--those who most ardently and eloquently articulate the principles of Wokeness--obtain status because they (a) signal the possession of desired traits and (b) promulgate a powerful narrative that legitimizes the status disparity between white elites and hoi polloi. The elites, according to these preachers, are morally righteous and therefore deserve status, whereas hoi polloi are morally backward and deserve obloquy and derision.

Heather MacDonald describes The Hysterical Campus from her own visits. Excerpted from her recent book. Wow.

Hope you get a break from school and politics sometime this weekend. Got anything planned?

1 I'm wondering if Ford has a picture of Kavanaugh at some party. Since all he can do at this point is deny being at any such event, the perfect impeachment would be a picture of him at a party: "See? He was there!"

To be really effective with this, though, you have to get him to testify first, relying on 36-year-old memories to deny a long-forgotten get-together where nothing memorable happened. That's how they want to turn Kavanaugh's innocence into a lie.

11 >3 If Ford has a picture, why isnt it released?

Because you don't impeach anything to show him at a party not raping anybody. But if you first get him on the record denying the party, then how far is it from proving he lied about the forgotten party to establishing that he is also lying about the rape assault? That's why they want him to go first.

If you show the pic first, he can always say "I have no memory of that trivial event", getting them nowhere.

This is the value of getting him to testify first. Anything they can refute, however innocent, is a form of impeachment.

33 farce?

for several weeks now we have seen national commentators, pundits and politicians chuckle at the verbal and physical attacks on the confirmation, offering that the dems and the left are foolish or pathetic.

it's an outrage. the rep politicians should be denouncing these storm trooper tactics, intoning that they are a threat to our republic and an attack on the constitution. the dems certainly would. this "farce", including the ford accusations, is an attack on the very functioning of the constitutional order.

35 this is a rumor from a commenter at Legal Insurrection, claiming it is from Ford's Facebook page, which someone copied before it was scrubbed. (because they had heard early rumors in advance that Ford's fake story was floating around)

"There's a very specific claim making the rounds that on May 17, she
posted a comment to the effect that someone should accuse Gorsch and
accuse every Trump appointee"

So they present her with this evidence while she is under oath, she can hardly explain it away. And if true, she has probably also heard about it, so won't testify. Maybe that was the (or one of) Ace up the sleeve. (or maybe that too is a rumor, but this activist came up with this recovered memory after Romney had Kavanaugh on his list, and her lawyer is strong with the resistance farce)

Is this the article gorilla pundit referenced? I think that was a chick, not a guy. And she never explained why she thought it was credible. It was a really weird article. She's an attorney who specializes in defending men against false charges of rape, although based on this, I don't understand why anyone would entrust their fate to her. She also claimed that she was molested as a child by her babysitter ... who was male. How plausible is that? Male babysitters aren't exactly common. She seems like just another paranoid, unreliable lib who makes weird, illogical assertions and expects people to believe them without question.

A teenage girl with zero job experience, who has autism and "extreme anxiety" and who would require a professional "job coach" to follow her around all day to "cue her with her job tasks," applied for a job at a retail store, and didn't get the job. Unsurprisingly. But now, the government is SUING THE STORE for the crime of not hiring her, because in so not doing they violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

So, wait -- does that mean that every company in existence must now necessarily hire the least experienced, most insane mentally retarded people for every position? If two people apply for a job, is it against the law to hire the most qualified of the two?

Hopefully even if she does not testify, that will leak at some point, just to reveal how corrupt and vicious these leftist fake victims can be.

71 So, in the Most Idiotic Drama Ever, Grassley confirms "an additional day of consideration has been granted" to the mob, er, the sensitive, deeply affected, memory-challenged, noble, lying/delusional/pile of garbage, "Dr" Ford.

In a completely jocular mode, just for yukks, let's hear someone's analysis of:

1) deadline last night was enforced, game over
2) new deadline today (tonight?) is missed, game over

I mean the different political impacts.

Hmmm, just as I thought.

The only thing I can think is that Grassley wants the Sunday talk shows (that nobody watches anymore) to talk about repeated deadlines she keeps missing for stupid reasons to build a narrative.

I honestly believe Flake is driving 90% of this.

Precisely. "He doesn't even KNOW that I EXIST."

Everything I've seen about this girl says she's, emotionally, permanently frozen at 15.

So, what's her next reason to delay? Dibs on broken fingernail.

"I have 'something' I'm already committed to" is my wife's guess. Or "That's when my bookclub meets."

And of course, if she has a surviving grandmother, she won't for long.

ford has no credibility whatsoever!. if she and kavanaugh had a relationship, dated knew each other, were placed in the same social contexts - then she might be credible. but they had no relationship, either personal or social, were in no social gatherings together, she remembers nothing of the event except him somehow: this the definition of lack of credibility. why hasn't anyone said this on tv? it only encourages the fraud.

Any leftist wanting to make him miserable, would not have the attention span or mental rigor required to find out his identity first. The blind spots of our enemy is so huge that we should consider ourselves lucky.

This confirmation fuckery is going to have 4 results:
1) Bring conservatives to the polls this November.
2) Cast the #meToo idiom as political, correctly. The polls reflect this.
3) Insure the next ~2 judges will be firebrands.

You misunderstand, the goal is to deny the seat by impeach___ his character and integrity. You don't get there by showing him at a party 36 years ago. You get there by having him deny being at a party, then proving him a liar by showing a picture, and finally by asking how we can believe his rapey denials when he won't even tell the truth about going to parties.

Cheap, fixed-focus cartridge-type "instamatic" cameras were common enough back then. There could certainly be pictures if there was a party.

Yet Pappas notes that Kav's name was not added to Trump's SCOTUS list until a year later (11/17).

Assuming this is correct, and it looks to be - hilarious. Only quibble would be to find if there were references to Kav as nominee earlier than that, but not formal inclusion on a list.

But it has all the hallmarks of a typical racist-authoritarian ("Democrat" or "progressive") hit job/media tantrum for years now - laughable, easily refuted, no factual basis, hysterically exaggerated and distorted. 144 IG, I've got to do a lot more off-hand practice with the M-1s (and the Mosins). Usually do rested, on the bench.

Have always wondered about the long-range training and practice, though. I think the average engagement in WWII in Europe was under 200 yds (quite a bit under), according to analyses that were done. Of course urban combat can tilt the stats or estimates a bit, but it seems reasonable.

I know Marines and others used to train with the M-1 out to 600 (!) yards. I just don't see the general utility or applicability of that. In almost all cases, that's just harassing fire, not serious aimed fire (I mean in real world combat).

145 In the following article, we will explore this quasi-religion, Wokeness, as a status system that functions predominantly to distinguish white elites from the white masses (whom we will call hoi polloi).

The irony here is that the soi-disant white "elites" are adopting ghetto usage in styling themselves.

You have to laugh.

146 At this time it's not about her any longer, it's about the Republicans and specifically Grassley making a mockery of the confirmation process by allowing the Democrats to get away with evil and satanic behavior during the hearings to the point that Kavenaughs wife and daughter had to be escorted out and could not watch it live because of the dangerous circus that Grassley allowed and for allowing the Democrats to possibly derail the nominee with a last minute smear that they have actually taken seriously.

Quite a few years ago, we had a "hearing impaired" gal show up with her state "advocate" (I work in education) who set up a meeting so "she could help us do what we needed in order to help her." Paraphrase but close to what she actually said.

We had two ap's, instructors and myself at the meeting. We went all out to accommodate this gal, because it was obvious from the get-go she was looking to sue the district for a nice lump sum.

In the end, she quit coming, because it was obvious her ploy wasn't working and she wasn't going to get the settlement she was trying to set us up for.

Fortunately, the AP's, being wise in the ways of the world, saw it coming a mile away and made sure they did everything they could to make sure the gal had no cause for complaint.

It was surreal, though, that we had to jump through these rather expensive hoops in order to avoid the even more expensive lawsuit the deaf gal was trying to set us up for.

I also think we got lucky, because the hearing impaired gal's advocate was quite aware of what was going on and was only willing to allow things to go so far.

I believe part of the driving force behind the AR-15 was the fact that most engagements are up close and personal.

But, there have been issues reported in Afghanistan where ranges tend to be much longer and shortcomings of the AR over longer distances are, supposedly, cropping up.

I have to take some of it with a grain of salt, because I think the military is still looking for that wonder rifle that does everything well and probably isn't above using Afghanistan as an excuse to fund their quest for a miracle rifle.

Levin logically reasons that a) The NYT never isn't lying, and 2) the info about Rosie was leaked to the NYT by Mueller's squad on behalf of McCabe.

I agree and I will go one step further: Why would the NYT turn on Rosie on a dime like this? Either 1) They are absolutely desperate about the midterms and so are trying anything to get Trump to fire someone so they can allege "obstruction". Or . . .

2) The NYT have discovered that Trump rolled Rosie within days of being sworn in because Adm. Mike Rodgers read Trump into the spying scandal (which is worse by orders of magnitude than anything any of us can even conceive), which Rosie was neck deep in, and so Trump allowed Rosie to appoint Mueller Special Counsel to buy Trump the time and distraction he needed to fully investigate the entire mess. And so the NYT can't reveal that Trump and Rod played them, so they throw their last gambit with this story.

Crazy? Maybe.

Just remember, Trump plays a long game and he never forgets a slight. And, he loves this country and doesn't give two shits about DC and its population of worthless scum."

The Right will get a pick-up in turnout. e.g., a lot of my male friends of a certain age are pissed off by this. We see Ford as complicit in Diabolical Left Wing Plot.

I think there may be a few optics involved. The mid-terms are coming up and what better way to blunt any Democrat takeover than putting candidates in the position of having to defend themselves against the charge they agree with the current insanity?

And, while I don't like it, still, it makes the GOP look at least somewhat like they are the actual adults in the room, compared to the constant temper tantrums the Dems are throwing.

"Brett Kavanaugh Bears the Burden of Proof"

________________________

That's bullshit. The accuser always bears the burden of proof in a court of law (in the U.S.). Of course, the senate is not a court of law, it's a circus. So the senate can do whatever it wants to do.

But the fact is that this woman's accusation can't be proved, and it can't be disproved either. Too many years have passed for any of the witnesses' memories to be trusted. So unless Christine Ford can produce a videotape of the incident, it's always going to remain a "she said/they said" type of deal.

Ford says there were a total of 5 people at the party. We know the identities of 4 of them: Ford, Kavanaugh, Judge, and Symth.

Kavanaugh, Judge, and Smyth deny any memory of the party Ford describes. Kavanaugh denies the alleged assault, and Judge and Smyth also deny that Kavanaugh ever assaulted any female in their presence.

We don't know who the 5th party-goer is/was, but even if that person is found, he/she was not in the locked bedroom with Ford, Kavanaugh, and Judge, so the 5th person could not possibly confirm anything other than that there was a party. Or they could say, like Kavanaugh, Judge, and Smyth, that they have no memory of any such party.

But whatever the 5th person says, it still won't prove Ford's claim that Kavanaugh assaulted her. Nothing will prove it, because it is now incapable of being proved, or disproved.

And that is why the claim should be ignored.

244 Does anybody recall during the glorious days of Occupy Wall Street when the up-twinkles and human microphone peoples decided that the only fair thing to do was to obtain a consensus for any group decisions. They settled on a 90% cutoff for passage of any motions, as opposed to a simple majority.

This meant that a relatively small cabal of oh, let's say 11% of the group could hold the rest hostage on any given issue.

This is what simple democracy tends to devolve into.

Now we have that concept carried to its illogical extreme. One person, a minority of epic proportions, is holding a nation of 330 million people hostage.

Democracy ==> mob rule

But I'm puzzled a bit by the latter - because the committee letter to Ford's team was extensive, comprehensive, detailed, and laid out the way it was going to be (on conditions of her testifying). I don't think they'd be entertaining any departures from that.

Of course, my 1st AR build consists of a lower receiver, some tools, and of course reloading dies and components for 5.56/.223 (this stage of the disease means you always have the reloading set-up before you even have the platform).

So my 6.5 AR project is in roughly the same situation as Trump's Wall, though I fear mine is more likely to see completion. (some day).

I know Marines and others used to train with the M-1 out to 600 (!) yards. I just don't see the general utility or applicability of that. In almost all cases, that's just harassing fire, not serious aimed fire (I mean in real world combat).

Posted by: rhomboid at September 22, 2018 12:13 PM (QDnY+)

That harassing fire is actually "gaining fire superiority", otherwise known as pinning down the enemy so that your assault element can use fire and maneuver on the enemy's flank to get close enough to shoot him in the face.

Armies are often criticized by their high rounds expended/casualties inflicted ratios without regard to the role of small-unit tactics. But BY DESIGN, the majority of rounds fired are not expected to hit an enemy soldier. Which is a big reason why the US military went with the 5.56 and the vastly larger number of rounds that can be carried by the average soldier.

The problem of the 5.56's lack of immediate lethality is real, but it has to be considered in the context of modern tactical doctrine.

320 Michael Caputo fundraising letterear Friend:

I'm sorry, I promised you I would stand tall in support of our President. But I don't think I can.

I can't, unless I can count on you.

This month, I am being forced to close my public relations business after 15 successful years. And for that, I can thank the radical leftists who oppose President Donald J. Trump. They have sworn to destroy him, his family, his businesses, and his friends.

Well, they have successfully destroyed my business. And they're not finished with me yet.

When the President asked me to join his national campaign in 2016, my wife Maryna begged my not to do it. In 2009, we moved home to our little village in Western New York to raise our family in peace. "Why risk everything now?" she asked.

I remember struggling with this decision live on the radio on March 31, 2016. Should I join the campaign and help my friend, or stay away and protect myself and my family? You can listen to that short audio clip here.

I disregarded my wife's advice (don't ever do that!) and now our family is paying for it every day. First came the legal fees, which you so generously donated to help me pay. I was able to pay other victims' legal fees too - including paying the fees for the plaintiff in a Supreme Court challenge to the constitutionality of the Mueller investigation. That case is still advancing.

I guess that was another mistake: I never thought I would need every cent of my fund just to feed my family.

Since then, Democrats in Congress, radical leftist activists and left wing media have destroyed my business:

- A Congressional committee investigator sent a threatening letter to my client, who then terminated our contract. The chief counsel of that committee said it was an accident. I'm not fooled.
- A group of radical leftist activists threatened to boycott a restaurant client if they didn't fire me. So they did.
- A reporter threatened to write a negative article about my pro-Trump company working for a national touring ballet. If I was no longer involved, she promised to write a positive article about the ballerina instead. So they fired us.

These actions and more have destroyed my company, and now I have virtually no income. I am looking for a new position, but the radical leftist attacks have destroyed my value in the job market. My frequent appearances on Fox, CNN and MSNBC in defense of the President are all unpaid - the only thing I get for doing those spots are death threats. And the billionaire donors who support the President tell me they will help, but they never get around to it.

The only person my family can count on is you. Your donation saved us before. I am embarrassed to tell you I need you to donate again.

I have hesitated to write you and confess this terrible situation we're in. I'm sure it will leak out that we are destroyed; Congressional investigators, radical leftists and left wing media will laugh and celebrate.

I'm sorry, but I have no other choice: I must ask you for another donation. I thought I was making the right decision for my family and yours by signing up to help Donald Trump win the presidency. Today, I know what a big mistake that was. I should have protected my girls instead.

I still expect to be asked to testify again soon, and I still have enough in my legal fund to pay for that. But here's what's worse: if the Republicans lose control of the House of Representatives, I will be targeted by leftists like Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) who will chair the House Intelligence Committee and start the bogus Russia investigation all over again.

His House Intel deputy, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), has even begun harassing me on Twitter:

Of course, Swalwell is lying in his Tweet. But when they take over the committee, they will clearly drag me in front of national television. I'm unafraid, but even as a mere witness, that will cost our family at least $30,000 of additional legal fees. I'm trying to keep my legal fund intact, but now I need it just to feed my family and pay our mortgage until this nightmare is over.

Can I count on you for another donation? I'm so embarrassed to ask, but I must.

I'm sorry to ask again. But I know I can count on you - you told me I could.

Thank you for being so generous. Maryna, Maria, Ana, and Lia thank you, too.

Sincerely,
Michael R. Caputo
East Aurora, New York

Millennial females are so infected by the virus that they're a net negative. Let's hope the next generation is more honest with themselves.

323 ITC, flawless point about tactics and long-range fire.

I was just always puzzled about the time and emphasis on very long range M-1 practice (out to 600 yds), for what was clearly harassing fire ...... which, to be effective, doesn't require anything like the attempt at accuracy implied by the 600-yd work.

The WWII training films for the M-1 spend lots of time on long-range techniques which in reality were rarely a thing in combat.

That's it. Just puzzled by the allocation of effort to a minor technique in the repertoire.

The Mosin-Nagants have sights that go out to ..... well, would have to go look, but it's 1,000 meters, or more. Obviously that becomes "indirect fire", a la mortars. But I believe in that case the idea was, in fact, for massed firing by large units, making it sort of a 7.62 artillery barrage.

325 So, per Grassley's 3rd "red line," Ford has about 1 Hr 15 min (2:30pm EST) to announce whether or not she will attend a hearing.

Of course, this means nothing. As I stew in my own anger over this, I sink to still deeper levels of anger as I think about all of the Democrat Senators, media personalities and Progressive activists that are this moment laughing at Grassley, Trump and the rest of us. Laughing. As they should. They're making this look easy. 36-yr old fact-thin allegation of a cloths-on groping that didn't go farther. No police reports. No telling parents, or friends or anyone... except DiFi and a team of insane Progressive/socialist moneyed activists, 36 years later.

Just tossing this grenade out there is all it takes for de jure hostile takeover of the Senate Judicial committee, headed by republican "leaders."

Personally, I'm tough on Grassley. But to be fair, he very well may have his hands tied by Collins or Flake or both (or others). Even one GOP senator can torpedo Grassley's efforts. Flake says, "I'm not voting up unless you give Ford whatever she wants." That's it.

But Grassley, if that's happening, should at the very least tell us THAT's what's going on here. If he doesn't name the GOP offender, at least we know it's time to organize an agitation campaign against the likely culprits. At first pass, I lean to preference of naming the offender by name so maximize pressure. Only problem with calling he/she out is that Dems too, will target that Senator with their own agitation campaign, and Dems do that WAY better than we do. They have media (print, TV, social) on their side to amplify. Weaklings like Flake and Collins have always proven susceptible to these Dem efforts.

I'll be honest people. This isn't looking good. Looks like one or two GOP Senators are not in line. And, if you're not in line on this.... If you REALLY are going to , or to pretend to, take Ford and the Dems at face value, then we can't win.

Because if you jump on the Progressive's train here, EVERYONE knows where it leads. What's Flake going to do? After 4 or 5 delays, we finally have a hearing, on Ford's terms, and then what? Flake straightens his tie and goes on Jake Tapper's show to announce that he doesn't believe the accuser and he's proud to up vote this fine man to the Supreme Court? Not going to happen. If Flake has already drunk the cool-aid, there is no path to nomination here.

And what's Flake's motive? Trump. 100% guaranteed. He's a grown-up baby man.

335 I think the plan here, currently being worked on, is to make it socially unacceptable to be a conservative.

I cannot remember the term they use, but its basically a war to make holding any non-leftist position a little bit awkward or less default. They don't need to convince people, they just need to make people uncomfortable, even a little, or hesitant and self-doubting to hold certain positions or support certain people. Basically, as ace noted a while back, its an attempt to control "cool" so that their position is always considered "cool" and anyone who disagrees, not so.

Thing is, I'm not really a long-range afficionado (tastes vary), nor a bullseye guy. It's OK to spend some time w-rking on "groups" at certain ranges, but for some reason I only really enjoy practical accuracy, using stock milsurp platforms. So, metal targets, 200 yds and closer, from cover, on the move, etc. Replicating real life to some extent.

But I still think my 2nd AR will be 6.5 or something else for longer range. First one will be a simple, iron sights-only carbine-length model.

Not without some concern and a little glance around at who's listening, yeah exactly. And while I think rudeness and personal cruelty should never be comfortable or easy to engage in -- society shaming people for being rude and mean spirited is proper -- its far beyond that. I'm gunshy about making common sense basic open statements about transexual insanity because my niece went berserk on me on Facebook and now I'm concerned I might be hurting and driving away others I care about.

That was my point, it's not fair. I'd never shot further than 100 yrds and that was with my only rifle at the time (AR). I'd always wanted something longer just to have and then grabagun had an unbelievable sale on the RPR for $980 (I think they're closer to $1100 now). What I hadn't anticipated was that scopes for those ranges cost damn near the price of the rifle but I bit the bullet and got a Vortex. The rings for it cost more than the entire scope setup on my AR.
It was a pain to get sighted in because no one could see where the bullets were going at 100 yds. So we got it on paper at 20yds, then 100, then the first shot at 900yds clanked the plate (with the help of a ballistics app to dial in the scope). Wasn't even fair, seemed to piss off everyone at the range that my dumb-ass just blew away all the snob $4-$5k rifles they had.

Progressive media and social media leaders just utter the customary oral denial that their biased or target conservatives, but then proceed -- right out in the open - to do the exact opposite. The "deplatoofrming" movement is real, organized, financed and well underway.

Conclusion to be drawn as a result of everything [Name news personality here, e.g. Jake Tapper) does or doesn't cover from a "news" perspective : "Trump and his supporters are racist, misogynistic, homophobic, dumb bigots and all of their policies are not only wrong, but evil. Obama is second coming of Christ, Hillary is an upstanding, moral, ethical, beautiful, friendly, insanely wise and brilliant world leader, and all of her policies are dripping pure gold, milk and honey. When facts surface that could arguably hurt the Progressive cause, I shall ignore them completely until, in very rare cases when news stories from Conservative channels somehow punch into the public ethos, in which case I shall cover the issue for the absolute minimum time possible, and that coverage will frame the issue (a) as a conspiracy theory, (b) "proven false by multiple news outlets," or (c) old news, already fully litigated by serious journalists and thinkers, and deemed false, evil and unworthy of public discussion. Good theory, but we were never going to engage at even 100 yards... engagement ranges inside a ship are measured in feet, not yards... and that is an entirely different technique.

360 Fortunately, in this case, my lack of great interest in long-range shooting coincides with my cheap bastid instincts - glass and rings etc. are pricey toys.

I admire the incredible set-ups I see at the range (as a range officer it's nice, there's an automatic "here, let me show you this, do you wanna shoot it?" reaction from almost all shooters). But I don't want one.

Problem is finding/helping set up a good action rifle shoot using steel/interactive targets from realistic ranges, with movement, use of cover, etc. There's a semi-OK one that goes on around here, but I think the difficulty/risk of having one that's open to anyone (and not just vetted members of a private club) is preventing anything like that getting going.

365 Turning to firearms, thanks for sharing your experience with 6.5 Creedmore. I hunt deer with .270, but I've been strongly considering moving over to the Creedmore based on stories from others, same as yours. Looks like it outperforms ballistics of .308 close in, and at range, with significant improvement on drop and wind-drift. As said many times before by everyone, ultimately hunting effectively and humanely is about shot placement, so any platform that can deliver sub-MOA groups, even for an amateur like myself, is very attractive.

Do any of you have opinion on 57x28mm (not for hunting)? CMMG recently came out with a new AR-like platformed 57x28 SBR and Pistol called the CMMG Banshee 57. See review of this round fired from CMMG platform at the video linked here: https://bit.ly/2xHDyCB

Looks impressive. Have read lots of debates about lethality of this round for home defense purposes, but US Secret Service, and others doing personal security work, have used this round in FN's PS90 platform for years (with the special armor piercing ammo not available to civilians).

386 The WWII training films for the M-1 spend lots of time on long-range techniques which in reality were rarely a thing in combat.

That's it. Just puzzled by the allocation of effort to a minor technique in the repertoire.

The Mosin-Nagants have sights that go out to ..... well, would have
to go look, but it's 1,000 meters, or more. Obviously that becomes
"indirect fire", a la mortars. But I believe in that case the idea was,
in fact, for massed firing by large units, making it sort of a 7.62
artillery barrage.
Posted by: rhomboid at September 22, 2018 01:30 PM (QDnY+)

The 30-06 was developed for long range fire, and the rifles in the 1880's and 1900's like the Mausers, Enfields, Nagants and Krags were set up for volley fire to engage columns and cavalry at long range. All of them except the Mauser had magazine cut-offs for that very reason. The Enfield No1 MkIII had a volley sight on the left side that you would crank up like a grenade launcher sight to lob rounds. You kept the magazine full for close up fire, and then when it got really close you used your bayonet.

Of course, this went away in the trenches in France, and later with the Germans and Russians developing the short cartridges for auto-loaders and group tactics that involved cover and concealment instead of columns, the long ranges were left to specialized arms.

In Korea, though, I am told that in dealing with mass wave attackes, the Garands were to take the longest range shots and the automatic weapons the close in ranges, because that was where they were the most effective.

Sure, even back in the day sometimes at parties you'd have someone taking snapshots with their Kodak Instamatic, but as a rule it was just people standing around, maybe a beer in their hand, mugging for the camera, but that was about it.

right, they now met the deadline, but didn't meet the agreement.

The whole time they have "agreed", but only with unagreeable conditions. The deadline was for agreeable conditions.

Saw one commenter another place say it was Flake (supposedly it was on Fox) that demanded the extension, not sure what Flake is demanding now. It actually seems Flake is in on the whole scam from the start.

499 Now the question is how they game the delays past the November elections. They only need one more month. Doesn't the committee require 5 days notice for their vote? That's one week. Then how many days of full Senate debate? How can they prolong or delay that? More hearings?

I wouldn't be surprised to see a push for five new federal holidays in the month of October to be passed next week.

510 sounds like Trump will have the IG determine if a few things should be redacted, which should protect Trump while not letting the guilt parties at the FBI redact the things that reveal their guilt (as has been the case)
allies don't want it exposed that they conspired with the guilty parts of our FBI/CIA to stop Trump before and after the election (and their help in framing Trump was probably part and parcel of protecting Crooked Hillary).

But being exposed is not what would cause "international tensions with allies", it is the fact they conspired with a globalist mafia against our Republic. Expose them, or (counter offer) bring us the heads of the traitors on pikes.

521 Involving the IG in the declass exercise makes zero sense to me. Not what an IG is for, nor functionally/substantively in an IG's wheelhouse (unless IG aggregates views of substantive players and presents some sort of neutral fer/agin' matrix to decision-makers).

As I noted at the beginning, with my usual impact on Horde understanding (heh), declass is a process, even under Trump's order - it's not a simple, instant release of everything specified.

But I don't get involving the IG. Normal process would be agency requests for redactions or non-release, to be reviewed up the chain, accepted or rejected. With POTUS being top of the chain.

Best viewed as a Black Box that will issue whatever it issues, probably. I am very skeptical of the likely impact of much of this material (not because it isn't incendiary - but because no press, and dumbed down electorate), have pooh-pooh'd it all along. Which puts me opposite Nunes, who knows a lot more than I do, so maybe it'll be good.

530 GOP Senate Judicial Committee, has been successfully hijacked by the minority Senate Democrats.

Hearing will be when Ford wants it, delayed further if she wants it, on whatever terms she demands, except that Kavanaugh will speak last, as of course was going to (that's why Democrats demanded the opposite, so they could "give" on something, and Grassley can rip off his shirt and show his chiseled six-pack to the world, and proudly proclaim his negotiating skill and GOP opinion writers can commend Grassley on his statesmanship and gentlemanly essence.)

Without evidence, because there is none, it is purely he said, she said, and the gallery will be full of SHES, She-famous celebrities, Green-haired fattie Shes that will endliessly disrupt Kavanaugh's turn to speak. Bras will be burned on the steps of the Supreme Court.

Behold Senators Flake and Collins, who in the teeth of all of this, are going to surprise all of us and publicly announce they do not believe the accuser and will confirm Kavanaugh. Right. Lol.

542 /531 I think he's the real deal, a gentleman and scholar. I think there is a good chance he will withdrawal. Not on his own account. I suspect strongly that he is the type that would tell Trump "I'll see it through all the way, if you want me to."

But if Flake or Collins privately won't vote to send the Confirmation vote to the full Senate, then Kavanaugh can't be confirmed, and won't be. There will be lots of behind-the-scene discussions with Senate republicans, lot's of yelling (no doubt), but the calls will conclude with Trump picking up the phone and dialing Kavanaugh to tell him that it ain't happening, and it's best for Trump, if Kavanaugh withdraws instead of failing to proceed out of the Senate Judicial Committee. Kavanuagh will pen a very solemn and classy letter, withdrawing from consideration based on "family reasons," and of course he'll have to reiterate that the charges against him are completely false. Maybe he goes back to the Appellate Court, works for a year, then retires.

Schumer, DiFi and the rest of them, and their media allies, activists and voters will drink champaign and hold pussy-hat parties. 43 days before the midterm elections.

Lol. (Cry.)

543 thanks rhomboid ... yeah, Trump says "unredacted" but was specific on certain pages, which I assumed someone had already reviewed.

What we have seen, Sara Carter says, her sources say ... they have seen the unredacted things and the ones that were redacted were to protect the criminals (FBI) ... they did not reveal sources and methods. And they have always hid behind that, and behind "under investigation/obstruction" ... as they run the coup.

Public opinion might change quite a bit if there are clear orders to (essentially) tell any lie to take down Trump, and protect Hillary. But I have no idea how the coup just continues, despite a few people being fired, and promises of prosecution.

if it is one giant Sting ... OK, I guess, maybe. But certainly the corruption is everywhere ... so we need more R senators.

Yep.
Kavanaugh goes to SCOTUS, more Rs are elected, wind for Trump increases, fence sitters sway to Trump.

Some Dems self immolate, others spontaneously combust. Slowly but inexorably through the year 2024 America will become more conservative.

Posted by: Braenyard at September 22, 2018 03:46 PM (mMMjw)

574 Rusty, not cowardly and wobbly, really, just a very poor reading of the politix. Julia (single young female voters, plus, in this case, select suburban female voters) are almost the entire point of this exercise, from the Dems' side.

But: I cannot believe this is getting major traction (i.e. changing any votes/getting anyone to the polls) with those dumb demos; further, the counter-reaction by "normals", indies, et al, I am confident, will greatly outweigh any small traction that is achieved.

As I've been saying - up until last night, Grassley's indulgent approach was perfect. Last night's "extension" could be seen as just one last bit of creating that image of total reasonableness and accommodation (I don't think it was needed).

Playing along further, now? THAT would be outright stupid.

Grassley should have had a nukyler, extensive response in the can/ready to go for this scenario.

Ford and Co. have beclowned themselves with amateurish, bad-faith stunts, all publicly documented. Julia will never be rational or satisfied, but the electorate is *not* going to see this as anything other than what it was. Ford and Co. have ensured this.

649 Had a little setback as far as my incision, so now, my family has to pack the wound twice a day. I'd do it, but I'm just not that tough to nonchalantly stuff gauze into my belly.

The doctor had to reopen the incision because it wasn't healing correctly. Instead of healing from the inside out, it was healing from the outside in, thus forming a seroma which contained a lot of fluid. No infection, thank God.

Getting referred to some wound care clinic Monday and get a wound pump installed so instead of twice a day, I'll only have to pack the wound every three days.

Kinda weird walking around with a gaping hole in my belly, but the oxycodone and gabpentin helps with the pain.

655 This Ford hearing has every chance of blowing up in the Republicans face

656 Ignoramus, highly recommend The End. Quick read.

657 On the plus side, no malignancy found according to the pathology report, so yay.

That's such good news. What a relief.

Gabapentin is good stuff and if you think too much just pop another oxy.

658 Skip - how do you figure?

Posted by: rhomboid at September 22, 2018 04:46 PM (QDnY+)

659 Thanks Blake.

The hubs surprised me.

The surgeon showed him how to stuff the wound, and after a momentary flash of shock, he followed her instructions to the letter this morning when he had to repack the wound.

This evening, going to show the daughter how, since she's going to do it during the week in the mornings.

The weird factor is off the charts at the moment as far as this situation is concerned.

Posted by: SMH - Future proprietress of Bartertown at September 22, 2018 04:47 PM (WEFox)

660 There was never going to be a hearing, IMO.

Ford was the Left's Plan C, and they never thought it would go this far.

Posted by: Ignoramus at September 22, 2018 04:47 PM (1UZdv)

661 Well Grassley remains silent. Even the 24-yr old doing his twatters.

They're gonna force me to go reload, clean guns, do some minor yard work, and maybe do a short bike ride on this gorgeous day.

I'll never forgive them.

Thanks. : )

Yes it is. Didn't know it is primarily an anti-epileptic drug.

663 Didn't know it is primarily an anti-epileptic drug.

Huh, fancy that. They pumped me so full of that stuff every bad joint in my body felt like it was brand new.

664 OK, so we're going to have rolling updates, right?

Tiger's first tee shot (Bander)

Oh, sorry. Missed my assignment by about 2 1/2 hours.

Tiger is playing lights out. Old Tiger. Vintage Tiger. He was like 5 under through his first six, he bogied somewhere.

Still, he's four up and there is not a pack at five and six.

665 The rules set by Ford's lawyer have everything upside down to normal. Kavanaugh is testifying first, then She speaks and Kavanaugh cannot be present like he actually raped her and she is terrified by him. No prosecution can ask questions only white male Republican Senators. He bad question and she will be crying like a fire hydrant with the sound bites how Republicans haved no sympathy towards abused women.

666 God Bless doctors.

Posted by: SMH - Future proprietress of Bartertown at September 22, 2018 05:00 PM (WEFox)

667 Gateway Pundit has excerpts of today's WaPo story quoting Ford's husband. From his attempts to paint her pathetically, she sounds nuttier than ever.

Female hysteria + feminist dogma + leftist urge to smash = lies of Dr. Ford.

Judiciary already said no to Kav testifying first and also told her no on the no lawyers demand. They also told her no on Thursday already. We will see if they stick to that.

That's the whole plan right there. Even according to the unseen letter to Eschoo and ChiDiFi, the guy she purports to be Kavanaugh merely fumbled at her clothes and supposedly put his hand over her mouth to keep her from screaming. That's as far as it went. And this has ruled her life for more years than seconds the supposed episode lasted. That, according to people who remember her, turned her into a drunken slattern who had 64 guys in a 48 month period after graduation from her exclusive all-girl school.

672 "she will be crying like a fire hydrant" Familiar to all of us who've worked with women in the office. Maybe she'll have a "panic attack." At least she won't be able to complain to the HR dept this time.

Posted by: Skip at September 22, 2018 05:08 PM (T4oHT)

Really? I've worked with women in the office. Never seen them crying like fire hydrants. They might. I just haven't seen it.

679 This whole fiasco has this natural optimist in the dumps. The injustice of it is too sickening to bear. I know Democrats are about deceit, control and ruining our Country but to go after a learned, honorable man is too evil to comprehend. Grassley should have stuck to Friday 10 p.m. and a vote on Monday.

682 SMH -- If they want to put you on one of those vacuum things for abdominal surgery gone bad -- check out how much it'll cost! I got put on one due to necrosis after surgery for endometrial cancer -- site became necrotic -- and the co-pay was totally unexpected, since I was on TriCare, and quite expensive.

Not saying not to get it, but might want to start a GoFundMe if they want to put you on it.

684 Then if they suggest the wound-vac, GO FOR IT! It's a whole lot better than the manual cleaning and packing. Might even want to ask about it.

Sorry about your disability ... but take advantage here, if you can.
