17 Saw a good show on cable last night about Leningrad (St. Petersburg) during WWII. Apparently, Leningrad was cut off from the Communist Central Party during the war and they pretty much made their own decisions and ensured their own survival.

One man rose to the top of popularity in Leningrad because of his natural leadership abilities.

Once the Nazis were defeated, Stalin had him report to the Kremlin where he was tortured and shot to death.

Posted by: Adirondack Patriot at September 12, 2018 09:49 AM (vbJig)

18 Went to Leningrad in April, during high school. Ice floes on the Neva. Asked our tour guide when spring starts. He looked puzzled and said, "This is spring."

"So good to see you General Flynn, could you help us out with a few of these details?" next thing Flynn knows he has to sell his house to cover legal fees, and then confess to a non-crime to keep Mueller's thugs from destroying his son.

63 Fascinating use of color and damn! you can feel the cold. This is rather Impressionistic compared to many of Aivazovsky's paintings which tend toward more realistic. His use of light in his marine paintings is especially effective and this one seems to be an outgrowth of that technique. His works are often very powerful. It is bothersome that he isn't better known.

90 It's one of my romantic dream vacations to travel across Russia on the Siberian Express. It's probably one of those things that's better in my head than in reality, though.

Agreed. I think the more romantic or exotic the fantasy is, the more disappointing the reality becomes. The movie playing in your head - the Siberian Express! Romance! Intrigue! Adventure! - conveniently ignores the realities of delays, surly service, bad food, substandard hygiene, rotten accommodations and unpleasant fellow travelers.

For example, I would love to go to the Vienna Opera Ball and dance with a princess, but if I ever did make it there, I know I'd be stuck alone at a table among snotty Europeans laughing at my ill-fitting rented tails, sweating, fat and incredibly unhappy watching beautiful duchesses, countesses and noble ladies sweeping across the room in fabulously expensive gowns.

Why pay money to be miserable when you can stay home?

Serious question, Muldoon. Do you have a book of assorted limericks from which you grab these?
Or do you really write these things in like 10 minutes, whenever the mood hits you. Cause if it's that it freaking impressive.

I tried to do one once for a morning thread and by the time I was done the ONT was closed.

It was Christmas Day evening / Boxing Day morning when they crossed the river / fought the Hessians. The point being regarding timing was that the Hessians would have overindulged themselves on Christmas revelry.

A bolder move in military history would be harder to find, IMHO.

Polls always have to be reweighted according to region and population and then have a turnout projection model factored in.

Take in pollsters who seem to be generally leftist biased and just can't help but put their fingers on the scales and the result are polls that are either psy-ops gaslighting bullshit or forever hopeful that the democratic turnout will fit their optimistic projections.

* The sun came up at 9:30 and was setting by 3:00.
*Half the employees came to work on snowmobiles.
* Cars had safety orange flags mounted to them so you could see cars coming at an intersection the snow was piled so high.
*Maintenence on the shipping docks was done there. Was horrified to see 18 wheeler service trucks loaded with equipment parked on the ice.

You know, there was some discussion yesterday about using a nuclear bomb to break up a hurricane, and we agreed it was probably futile. But what about detonating a line, or double line of them diagonally across its path, at about a thousand feet underwater? Bring up some cold bottom water, and starve it for energy. Might even divert it out to sea?

Back in my Army days in Alaska, we used frozen lakes as helicopter LZs all the time. Which could get dangerous, not from thin ice but from the ice getting slick from the melted water on top. Did a landing in Hueys once where the bird I was on slid forward as soon as the skids touched down. Had a blade strike on the tail rotor of the bird ahead. Really exciting, especially when pieces of the rotor came flying through the windscreen and laid out the crew chief. Luckily, he just ended up with cracked ribs.

Clearly I have no sense of scale here, so I'm just assuming, there's a point at which jeeps are safe, but trucks are not, and a point at which a single truck is safe, but a buttload of deuce and a half type trucks, attempting to supply a major city, would not.

The goal Is to complete the course in the fastest time. After the start and the skaters are away, the mortar team members of each team are free to drop mortar rounds in the opposing skater's path.

You're going to see more of that as September rolls on. The battlefield isn't nearly as broad as the Dems/Media/NT's (BIRM) once thought.

If the Dems topple the House it will be with no more than 225-seats (that would be +30, which is an outside possibility) - a barely functioning majority.

GOP will add a bare minimum of 3 in the Senate, could easily be anywhere from 5-10 though depending on who shows up (and how many dearly departed get their votes counted)

The amount of energy from a nuclear detonation is miniscule compared to the energy of a hurricane.

And yet, as I mentioned yesterday, the Watermelons want us to believe that mankind has the ability to change the weather of the whole planet.

340 You know, there was some discussion yesterday about using a nuclear bomb to break up a hurricane, and we agreed it was probably futile. But what about detonating a line, or double line of them diagonally across its path, at about a thousand feet underwater? Bring up some cold bottom water, and starve it for energy. Might even divert it out to sea?
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

It would require a lot of energy to move that much water--more than a nuke can provide. Plus there's the question of how much energy would be imparted to the water in the form of heat...the summary of what I've seen about such things is "probably not".

342 The more carbon emissions rise in China and India, the more the US has to sacrifice to combat global climate change. That's what the Left says.

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh

Absolutely! In fact, we should be paying "carbon credits" for all the carbon we produce.

And that money, after a suitable skim-off for the noble Leftists in charge, should be given to these poor, downtrodden nations.

So that they can get closer to a first-world existence, with all the energy demands and carbon-creation that entails.

...wait a minute, this is sounding like a scam to enrich Leftists and impoverish the USA, and not a way to reduce carbon at all!

I was wondering when someone would point that out. Even the Tsar Bomba is barely a wet fart compared to the energy in a hurricane. Probably you could knock out a tornado with one, but that's not a very good trade-off, is it?

always curious how one proposes to decrease the energy of a system by adding energy to it - hurricanes are the Earth's mechanism for absorbing excess heat from the tropics and transporting it to dissipate in the temperate zones. Adding heat is not the kind of thing that's going to make them go away.
