Ethan Hawke is a Twat

"Now we have the problem that they tell us 'Logan' is a great movie. Well, it's a great superhero movie. It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands. It's not Bresson. It’s not Bergman, but they talk about it like it is. I went to see Logan cause everyone was like, 'This is a great movie' and I was like, 'Really? No, this is a fine superhero movie. There's a difference but big business doesn't think there’s a difference. Big business wants you to think that this is a great film because they wanna make money off of it."

I'm not the biggest fan of James Mangold's film Logan. I think it over-relies on previous iterations of the character in order to create its emotional response from the audience. It doesn't stand on its own as well as I think it should. It's still a fine film, though.

That critique, however, does not dismiss the movie because it is about a man who has claws in between his knuckles. What kind of pretentious moron dismisses a film because it contains fantastical elements that are not the actual point of the story? A movie that marvels at explosions like Michael Bay's worst instincts? Sure, that isn't a movie about anything. But a movie that strives to be about the effects of growing old and losing your place in the world? It's suddenly not worth serious consideration because it involves things that aren't real?
Ethan Hawke is a complete twat.

Genre Storytelling

You know who was probably the greatest genre storyteller ever?

William Shakespeare.

The man wrote in a wide variety of genres from historical dramas, to sex comedies, to revenge fantasies, to ghost stories, and even drug infused trips into madness. He dealt with wizards, magic, and fairies all the time.

I sure hope Ethan Hawke swears off appearing in any production of A Midsummer's Night Dream or Macbeth for the rest of his life, or else he'll be an unmitigated twat.

Have you ever heard of a storyteller named Stanley Kubrick? The man worked war movies, science fiction, horror, thriller, and dystopian fantasy. He dipped his hands into the fantastical more than once, and his movies are all worthwhile as movies, not as genre exercises.

Oh, and Ingmar Bergman? One of the filmmakers that Ethan Hawke referenced in his quote? Bergman made a film and stage production of the silly little piece by Mozart called The Magic Flute which is one of the most delightful films I've ever sat through. Oh, and it deals with dragons, fairies, and magic freaking flutes.

I take it all back. Ethan Hawke isn't a twat. He's not a complete twat or an unmitigated twat.

He's a jackass of a twat that gives twats a bad name.

What the Hell was That?

I read that quote up above from Ethan Hawke and it enraged me in ways that I find confusing after it had passed. Hawke had shown that he's not actually terribly sophisticated even though his sentiment is designed to make him appear that way. He demonstrated with that word salad that he doesn't actually understand storytelling at all. He's shown that he's an unimaginative mental midget who can't connect with people who are different from him. He's made it plain for all the world to see that he is so unimaginative that he can't look through narrative conventions to view the humanity hidden beneath unless it's all stripped away and he's just left with the obvious message beneath.

This is actually something that I remember arguing about with a professor in college. We were talking about some upcoming movie and the director in charge. He said that he was worried about the quality of that film because the director's previous work was just genre stuff.

This was a man whose opinions on film I respected. He's one of the first people to encourage me formally to look beyond the movies of my youth and discover films and stories of a wider breadth and depth, and he was dismissing anything that dealt with genre off hand. It was as I considered what he said that I realized something: Everything is a genre.

Everything is Genre

As a quick little exercise, imagine a movie that someone might say has no genre. When I do it (or, when I did this for the first time over ten years ago), I thought of the movie In the Bedroom. It's a small movie from the first decade of this century about a family dealing with family troubles including a death. As I considered it, I realized that it, too, belonged to a genre: the family drama. It had its general rules that all such movies generally adhere to. The genre has its formulaic and stereotypical elements that come and go depending on the quality of the individual story being told. It's just like any science fiction, fantasy, comic book, or horror film. It can as easily fall into its own routines just like any other genre piece without actually saying anything about people.

Stories like the family genre have greater innate respectability from people because its trappings aren't as obviously entertaining. They tend to appeal to a different set of emotions from pure excitement or wonder or terror like some other genre pieces. But does that mean that the Lifetime movie about the woman moving back home from the big city is inherently more informative about the human condition than a movie about a man who dresses like a bat and tries to punch a man dressed like a clown?

Pretentiousness

What kills me is Hawke's obvious pretentiousness. He can't be bothered with genre filmmaking in serious conversation. It's an odd thing for a man who's stared in terrible horror movies (The Purge, Sinister), a terrible vampire movie (Daybreakers) and even an apparently really good time travel movie (Predestination). I'm sure if someone were to ask him his opinion of Bergman's The Magic Flute, he would wax poetic about it's virtues without making any connection to his dismissal of Logan because it's about a man with claws as opposed to Mozart's work about a magic freaking flute.

What does this tell me? For one, that Ethan Hawke is probably neither incredibly intelligent or self-aware, and that he is dismissive of some of the movies that have paid for most of his lifestyle (he's probably not making a whole bunch of money working with Richard Linklater all the time). Hawke is a microcosm of Hollywood in general.

He's happy to make money off the dumb masses who watch him chase funny named ghosts, but don't give those masses any credit for any amount of taste. Sure, Logan had its qualities, but did you see those dumb claws?

I don't know anything about his opinions on things, but I'd watch the hell out of Gattaca any day and twice on Sundays. There's nothing bad about that movie, and the musical score is stunning.

24 Soothsayer, yup. Some great episodes of that show. IMHO Jerry Stiller was *better* on KoQ than Seinfeld. Plus he got his son Ben to play his own father once on an episode.

The show also had some great cameos from Lou Ferrigno (as the Heffernan's too-nice, overly PC neighbor, Gavin McLeod, and Brian Cranston (!).

It's pretty simple: Ethan Hawke is one of the last generation of people who are born with their genetics left to chance. He always wanted to be an astronaut, but he can't because he wasn't chosen by a genetecist from the best of his parents' genes like his younger brother was. This makes him sad.

He meets Jude Law who is a GMO who got paralyzed while out of the country. His DNA checks out but he's broken. Now Ethan Hawke has the DNA to bluff his way into following his dream. Except he still has to do it with his crappy loser body. Awesomeness ensues. Watch it. It's really good.

70 I don't think Hawke is wrong per se. I like scifi and fantasy, but most superhero movies are stupid precisely because they are superhero movies. They are films with nothing to say that take about 2 hours to say it. Man gains superpowers, does heroic stuff, gains inexpicable nemesis, overcomes nemesis, bangs starstruck mortal wench. Same formula again and again. Or even worse: dispense with even that minimal character arc and have a team of superheros doing heroic things (by which I mean CGI-fueled action) for two hours. I started watch the old Tim Conway Don Knotts Disney Movies, with my 5 yr son and we watch the old Scooby Doo movies with the Celebs from my Youth and I think Cher is the only one that is alive from them and rest are all Dead and it makes me so Sad. Maybe some of the Harlem Globe Trotters are alive and I was shocked to see Scooby and Shaggy saying thier prayers before bed.

One of my very favorite movies. It sort of crosses genres doesn't it? I recall seeing with a boyfriend and he enjoyed the history and thriller aspect of it and I liked the romance. And Mel Gibson has never looked better on film. That scene where they drive though the roadblock - hot, hot, hot!

79 70 I don't think Hawke is wrong per se. I like scifi and fantasy, but most superhero movies are stupid precisely because they are superhero movies. They are films with nothing to say that take about 2 hours to say it. Man gains superpowers, does heroic stuff, gains inexpicable nemesis, overcomes nemesis, bangs starstruck mortal wench. Same formula again and again. Or even worse: dispense with even that minimal character arc and have a team of superheros doing heroic things (by which I mean CGI-fueled action) for two hours. They are generally awful movies for 12-year-olds or imbeciles.

Two of my favorite musicians are Yo-yo Ma and Aussie guitarist John Williams. They are similar in that each plays in a wide variety of styles. Yo-yo has even done two bluegrass / mountain music albums! Not all of their albums are winners, in my opinion, but both are genre blenders and that's one reason I admire them.

She has his healing factor though. That is his actual mutant power, not the claws though they were sort of retconned as being part of it. In fact that's the reason he has the Adamantium grafted to his bones, his healing factor keeps it from killing him. So X-23 is going to be fine.

185 I saw The Secret of NIMH recently, and I think it suffers from what all of Don Bluth's films suffer from--an inability to end when it's supposed to. Other than that, I don't remember much about it.

I remember seeing Superman Returns a few years ago, and thought it was a pure valentine to the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie. Same plot, same situations, hell, even the same dialogue.

The first Christopher Reeve Superman movie, by the way, ought to be a template for how the character is done. "Batman V Superman" could have been a struggle between Superman's eternal optimism and Batman's ingrained cynicism. Instead they went with "stupid" instead.

Tip for anyone who wants to make a Fantastic Four movie: study that first Superman movie. That's the way the Fantastic Four should be done--with a gee-whiz optimism and forward-thinking urge to conquer problems.

One of the more annoying things in the Marvel universe is the constant idea that the heroes create the villains. It's essentially the idea that one should not fight for what is right, that passivity in the face of evil is the better course of action. That is a purely evil idea in and of itself.

It shows up as a central idea in most of the MCU. All three Iron Man films, all three Thor films, two of the three Avengers films, Black Panther, The Hulk, two of the three Captain America films etc. It's tiresome. And it's slowly made me give up on the MCU.

After Magneto ripped the Adamantium from his bones it was revealed he had bone claws. However I believe prior to this any flashbacks of him pre-Weapon X did not have him with bone claws. So they made it a bit of a shock when he revealed that he had them in that comic.

232 The first Christopher Reeve Superman movie, by the way, ought to be a template for how the character is done. "Batman V Superman" could have been a struggle between Superman's eternal optimism and Batman's ingrained cynicism. Instead they went with "stupid" instead.

I don't remember which one it was I or II but When Reeves wanted to tell Louis he was Superman and looked into the mirror took off his glasses stood straight up and squared his shoulders that was good acting because he looked totally different and he showed how people couldn't see Clark as Superman.

Yet it's somewhat different in TDN. The Joker wasn't created by the heroes, he was innately evil and opportunistically took advantage of the situation. And most importantly, he manipulated Batman and Gordon into the "we are the enemy" situation/solution, which they took because out of many horrible courses of action it was the least evil.

That's infinitely more complex and interesting, which is one of the reasons it works so well.

I love the story of a Superman type hero mentoring a younger version of himself, you see the Kid grow make mistakes get hurt etc. the Female characters are treated equally and some even like to dress sexy.

They're not just looking for loose change - that's been happening a lot in a lot of places. I've had a cop I know tell me that a lot of times its young gang bangers, mostly mexican, who've figured out that there are way too many stupid people who will leave a handgun under the seat or in the console. That's what they're looking for. And yes, all you gotta do is watch the papers for how many reports there are of "yeah, somebody stole my gun out of my car, I forgot to lock it."

283 Just finished watching a Russian movie (via Amazon Prime) about the mission to salvage the Solyat 7 space station in 1985. Not a bad movie although I thought it went a bit too long. Very little in the way of CGI and it appeared that the Russians used a lot of models and mock-ups that actually gave a more "tactile" feel to the movie that the current Hollywood CGI-bloated movies.

It was interesting to see events from the former Soviet perspective and Uncle Palp would be proud of his fellow SMR. Of course, they gloss over the whole Commie Big Brother watching them.

Easily the most disappointing movie I ran across. I remember in early 2001 seeing the trailer for it, thinking that Pearl Harbor was going to be EPIC. The truth was far more sinister. I hear Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) was far superior.

I will say this about all superhero movies. They are not imaginative. Hollywood has very few good writers and studios don't want to pay a million dollars or more for a script. So, when CGI got developed enough so that your superhero moves didn't look like the Superman TV series of the 50's or the Batman series of the 60's, Hollywood jumped at the change to buy remade storylines. Storylines that were originally written for boys 6 though 16.

If you haven't seen it, you should. I have always considered Tora Tora Tora to be one of best/most accurate WW2 movies ever made. I suspect what (Hollywood) people don't like is that they don't have any big song and dance scenes to build up some "drama" about the characters or whatever nonsense it is that Pearl Harbor wasted 2/3 of the movie on. Tora Tora Tora shows you the forces, shows you the preparations of the opposing sides, shows you the battle as it happened, as accurately as they could, And it is brilliant! Everything that is important about that battle, you are shown as clearly and accurately as possible, and any bullcrap that didn't belong in a movie about Pearl Harbor got left out.

Good movie, Travolta is in it but hell it doesn't pull its punches about Terrorism and Terrorists. If you haven't seen it watch it. Very fun movie.

Although, it really isn't a Hollywood film as such, it's more a French production. There's not a lot to admire the Frogs for, but they've shown themselves to be MUCH more willing to make films showing the mohammedans as the savages they are.

337 291..... I have always considered Tora Tora Tora to be one of best/most accurate WW2 movies ever made. I suspect what (Hollywood) people don't like is that they don't have any big song and dance scenes to build up some "drama" about the characters or whatever nonsense it is that Pearl Harbor wasted 2/3 of the movie on.....

I am not a war-movie afficionado but I'll second that endorsement. VERY good movie.

BTW, I want the "drama," as you put it. I usually only like action or military movies that have interesting characters and personal drama.
(Bridge on the River Kwai is a good example.)

BUT I have discovered that, in war movies at least, I would prefer no "drama" at all to bad, cliched crap. I hated Pearl Harbor. It doesn't do ANYTHING well.

If you want personal drama in a Pearl H setting, watch From Here to Eternity.
If you want the war story, watch TTT.

Black Panther is much worse than those 3 because it tries to SJW about race. The others are just escapist entertainment, although they dabble in politically correct topics. Black Panther is the movie world equivalent of "black Africans created the Pyramids using their flying powers and are responsible for all the knowledge of the world which YT took from them and then sucked that knowledge out of their heads". Gattaca is one of my favorite sci-fi flicks. I kind of just like actors when they are saying lines someone else wrote. because her family is obviously too stupid to figure it out from the first or second thefts that leaving anything of value in your vehicle is an invitation to have it stolen.

385 Hawk isn't wrong. Logan is *almost* a great film, but they kind of gave up in the last half hour and finished it like a standard superhero movie. Should have come up with a better plot twist than super plot serum. Good movie, though.

I've had a cop I know tell me that a lot of times its young gang bangers, mostly mexican, who've figured out that there are way too many stupid people who will leave a handgun under the seat or in the console. Granted, there are a lot of good actors out there. But how rare is it when you literally forget who the actor is? I mean truly.

I offer two examples (granted, from a TV miniseries, but it counts, IMO)

Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones in Lonesome Dove. First time I saw it I was several minutes past the opening credits. Took me twenty minutes to holler "holy shit, that Robert Duvall. Took me even longer to recognize Jones.

That, my friends is rare. Very rare. And it was done without benefit of a lot of makeup.

Charlize Theron in Monster is another great example.

Been watching Game of Thrones lately. While it's impossible not to recognize Peter Dinklage, his performance as Tyrion Lannister is absolutely magnificent. In fact, as I read the books some years ago, I had Dinklage in mind.

Long before the MCU got established, many comics fans would go on about how this or that tale would make a great movie. I could agree, but what bugged me was the underlying attitude that the comic itself was not good enough to be treated with respect on its own.

Fandom was permeated with unspoken shame. I wondered, did fans of cozy mysteries or bodice-rippers have that same attitude toward what they ostensibly enjoyed? For that matter, why should we care about what some snot opined on our hobby?

My response is to buy what sounds interesting to me, and if it's good, hang on to it, even if I may not read it again for years. Sadly, this means that I have bought several comics that met quick cancellation.

When you think about it, making a good comic is damned difficult. In a just world, the good ones would have the respect due to them.

OK, this is getting away from me, and maybe I should have waited for the book thread. I'll wrap up with this:

On the flip side is an academic like Rod Whittaker, who wrote books on the side as Trevanian. Most famous for his genre books such as The Eiger Sanction and Shibumi, but he HATED genre. Most of them were actually written as spoofs of the genres he hated.

Fantastically talented writer, but a miserable pretentious prick. Which broke my heart because I really enjoyed his first five books.

This was a man whose opinions on film I respected. He's one of the first people to encourage me formally to look beyond the movies of my youth and discover films and stories of a wider breadth and depth, and he was dismissing anything that dealt with genre off hand. It was as I considered what he said that I realized something: Everything is a genre.

This is a discussion I've had several times with authors and the like. People who sniff and claim that they do not respect "genre" books are simply disliking certain other genres than the ones they prefer.

Literary misery pieces about man's inhumanity to man and so on ... that's just as much genre as a western or a noir detective novel. Its depressive and pretentious but genre. "Literary fiction" is not some unique category of fiction which transcends genre, that is its genre.

And people who sneer at books because they have an easily identifiable category in the book store are insufferable and pretentious themselves.

Forget about all the negative criticisms of The Shape of Water for a minute. Yes, it's got heavy-handed slams on Christianity, American military, and (human) males generally. Yes it's made by people that hate Normals like us.

But it's also got the beautiful naked Sally Hawkins, who really does give a stupendous performance. It's got great lighting and color palette. It does have touching moments, surprising because they are birthed in grotesquery. It has the very subtle, nuanced actor Michael Shannon ...

... OK I'm kidding, Shannon plays the scene-chewing damaged angry a-hole that he almost always plays, about the same character he played in that unwatchable Herzog eco-movie 2 years ago. I still like him, and maybe someday he'll try to stretch his range a bit. I liked his small part in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. He was good in that housing-collapse movie, 99 Homes?

There is a great small speech by the General Hoyt character at around 1:36:05 in TSoW:

"36 hours from now this entire episode will be over. And so will you. Our universe will have a hole in it with your outline. And you will have moved on, to an alternate universe: The Universe of Sh!t. You will be lost to civilization, and you will be unborn. Unmade, and undone."

That's Full Metal Jacket quality dialogue right there.
