F-Class Competitive Shooting

What happens when high-power shooters grow old, feeble, and their eyesight becomes too weak for iron sights? They put scopes on their rifles, lay on the ground to shoot and call it F-Class, that's what!

F-Class is a precision rifle shooting sport with targets at known distances between 300 and 1,000 yards. Mid-range matches are 600 yards and under, and long-range matches are 800 yards and over. At 1,000 yards the center or 'X' ring of the target is a five inch circle. The object to place shots as close to the center as possible, with a match typically consisting of 20 shots for record fired in relays.

Originally started in Canada, F-Class matches are now held in many countries around the world, and are governed by the international regulatory body ICFRA (www.icfra.com). In the U.S., matches are sanctioned by the NRA, with programs and rules administered by the NRA High-Power Committee.

F-Class competition falls into two separate styles; F-Open and F-T/R. The primary differences are rifle weight, caliber and the front rest system allowed to support the rifle. F-Open rifles must weigh less than 22 pounds, be .35 cal or under, and may employ a variety of front rest supports. F-T/R is more restrictive; with rifles weighing under about 18 pounds, chambered in .223 or .308 caliber only, and be supported in front with a bipod only. The targets and scoring for the two styles are the same.

Anyone with a reasonably accurate scoped rifle and good quality commercial ammunition can participate and have a LOT of fun in an F-Class match. Stock rifles by Savage and Remington are often seen on the line at club matches where most F-Class shooters begin in the sport. Custom equipment and advanced reloading techniques can be added later if desired, but you do not have to spend a lot of money to get out, have fun, and learn from the more experienced long-range shooters. What is important is to take the leap, find a match and sign up - the most you have to lose is an afternoon!

***This Old Gun***

This week's old gun comes to us courtesy of commenter Bob the Bilderberg:

The story my father told is that one day sometime in the 1910s or 20s a Texas Ranger stopped at the farm. He was riding to Victoria, TX and asked my grandfather if he could loan the Ranger a concealable gun. My grandfather gave the Ranger his .32. The Ranger left his Bisley and said he'd be back in a few days. He never came back and the Colt has been in the family since.

It taps into your weather app and crunches the numbers from where ever you zeroed your rifle. Pretty damn slick, still have a elevation cheat sheet on my scope cover just in case

20 Weasel, Thanks for the thread and the explanation about long range competition. I'll have to stick with my shorter range shooting from a bench for fun. Getting down to the ground is possible but difficult. Getting up would require a sky crane copter and a three man work party. SIGH!

I use a ballistic app sometimes to model the effect of large swings in atmospheric conditions, and a software package called QuickLoad for rifle load development. Great tools.

25 If you're going to be shooting F-T/R, what factors would lead you to choose a .223 over a .308? Would competitors be able to choose to switch chamberings in different events or would a .223 shooter be facing some competitors with .223 and some with .308 in the same event?

28 I would really like to get into long range shooting, but I'm not sure to go around here. We live in a hilly, wooded area of Southwestern Oregon and not too many places that are accessible and wide open enough to get a shot at 300 yards, let alone 1,000 yards. I don't think our local gun club goes out that far.

I recently purchased the Ruger Precision Rifle in .308. Any moron recommendations for a good solid scope in the medium price range (under $500)???

30 On the matter of guns with weird provenance:

25 years ago (when I was four) I made friends with a neighbor who was into shooting. I had just "inherited" Dad's rifles and was getting into it. (He was rapidly declining due to Parkinson's and they were better off with me than with him).

So, neighbor new friend and I met at the range a few times and he said "I don't care about small calibres any more" and gave me a High Standard .22 nine shot revolver.

36 This week is Vz 58 week for me.

I have one which is Czech military surplus and shoots the 7.62 x 39. The second is a new rifle Vz 58 from CzechPoint but chambered in 5.56 x 45 and .223.

Both are light, accurate and fun to shoot but the 5.56 has a cheek slap that would make Hercules dizzy. It has an M4 adjustable stock so I have to get used to cheek welding that mother in place when shooting it.

The 7.62 X 39 version is a soft shooter with the correct muzzle brake and while a little rough around the edges has no issues what so ever except it gets hot in a hurry.

Now to see which one wins at 100 yards and 40 rounds each, iron sights only.

Standing, sitting, kneeling and prone.

Well I didn't want to assume, because I don't know, but that's pretty much what I was wondering. Unless the course of fire is over so many rounds that recoil fatigue gets to be a problem, I can't think of a compelling reason to choose .223 over .308 for that kind of range if you're going to be keeping score.

47 Haven't been to the range in a couple of weeks, still doctoring Mrs Old Blue's eyes after her surgery and the timing for her eye drops is just off. My goal is to increase the range to the target each time I go and work on increasing my accuracy with iron sights. At the range I go to right now, 25 yards will be the max so I'll have to start looking around for an outdoor range where I can go longer. When I bought the Ruger, it came with a Weaver scope, but I haven't used it yet. I'd like to get good enough to compete in some small bore rifle matches that I've seen advertised in my Shooter Illustrated magazine that I get from the NRA.

Nope. Same class. Scored together. Which begins to show the disadvantage of the smaller caliber. I've been in matches where the top 20shooters were separated by x count.

Thanks for the recommendation!! I have a friend that really likes Vortex too. I will check them out. Another friend will only consider Leupold Scopes, and I know they are great scopes and made in Oregon. But still a bit too rich for my blood.

63 Question for the Horde. The Sportsman's Warehouse here locally has a sale going on. I'm going there because they've got some really good prices on .22 ammo. Now, they have a a Walther P22 QD pistol for $239.00. I know it's only a .22 pistol, but like I've said before, I wanted to start small and work my way up. Any ideas on this? Thanks!

68 Okay a dumdum story.

I have started carrying recently. It isn't EDC because I work in a building where I can't.

So had my CHP for a few weeks and have been working with my belly band to find just the right way to carry.

Had a good one today but a little bit uncomfortable. Got home and adjusted and found a slight variation that was a LOT more comfortable.

Go in the grocery store and walking normally feeling like hey this is it when my pistol pops out and lands on the floor right by he checkouts. That's a loud sound and everyone looks of course. Luckily my foot was fast and the pistol is small enough that my foot completely covered it. I don't think anyone saw it I was able to drag it under my foot to an empty aisle.

But jinkies. That is a lesson learned.

Absolutely! If you like the way the .22 feels, then by all means get one. I have a few and enjoy getting them out when I can. One word of caution on .22 ammo, though. Buy a small amount until you find out if your pistol likes the brand. Some .22s can be finicky.

70 Was at the range this Monday to break in my spanking new Smith & Wesson Victory SW22 .22lr pistol!

I'm not a good shot. But I was amazed at how much my accuracy improved with this entry-level target pistol.

"How bad a shot are you?"
I print bullseye targets on 8.5"x11" paper. Shoot at 7 yards. I often have 1 or 2 shots that completely miss the paper out of 9 fired.

With this SW22 my 2nd target had 8 of 10 shots in the 8 ring, 1 in the 6 and a flyer in the 2 ring. When I tried quick firing from 5 yards (40 shots) I left a ragged hole where the bullseye used to be! 1 shot on the 4 ring - everything else inside the 6. That's not especially good shooting... but it is for me!

Such a good shooting gun!

Done. You can buy a shooting rig that hooks up a laptop to a long-range rifle. You pick a target on screen, tell the program to shoot and it will shoot when it thinks it will hit. It's stupid accurate past 1,500 yards.

Here are the Rangers killed in the line of duty up through the 1930s. From 1910 through 1929, it looks like 20 or so Rangers were killed.

Of course, the Grandfather in the story may have had a nicer gun than the Ranger (or a ton of other reasons for his not returning).

Lancelot, I just bought 2 BX-25 magazines for my 10/22. Technically illegal in CO, but I had no problem ordering and getting them. By the same token, most CO Sherrif's and PD's have already said that they wouldn't enforce that particular law regarding magazine size. So now I have two BX-25's and four BX-1 magazines and can go 90 rounds without having to stop and reload.

75 66 ... Old Blue, I haven't shot the Walther but it gets decent reviews. Not intended as a target pistol but more for plinking.

For fun and plinking, would you consider a single action revolver? (The cowboy style.) If so, check out the Heritage Rough Rider. I have several and they are a lot of fun. They generally cost well under 200 dollars. But not everyone likes the slower pace of single action revolvers.

77 I went to the range today after a long absence (nearly 3 months) since there has been illness in the family taking up most of my weekends. The takeaway is handgun shooting is a perishable skill; I shot terribly at first until I stopped myself & starting thinking through fundamentals. I use my most beloved CZ-75B as my range pistol. If I'm not shooting right I know it isn't the gun.

87 Thanks JTB! I don't mind the slower pace at all. Accuracy over speed. I can send a lot of rounds down range pretty quickly, but if only 2 out of 10 are hitting the target, then I'm wasting a lot of ammunition.

Disclaimer: I don't know anything about that particular pistol, so this is general Walther stuff.

I've never had an issue with any Walthers. That P22 grip kind of looks like my carry PPS M2*, which I wouldn't have chosen if it didn't feel comfortable. Something about the grip angle makes recoil feel milder on the little Walther than on a full-size VP9 with the same rounds - not that recoil is an issue with 22lr, but clearly they got the grip right. They'll have a lifetime warranty but I've never heard word one about whether their service is good or not because I don't know anyone who's had to send one back. Walther triggers are very nice - I've never used one that wasn't good to very good out of the box. I've never had a .22 auto that liked the Remington Thunderbolt ammo that they sell for $1.96 per 55 gallon drum nor one that didn't loooove CCI Mini-mag. Not sure what the rail is for, but it's free so I guess put a bayonet on it. I'd look around to see if magazines are commonly available for that model. Walther magazines aren't expensive or hard to find, but for some karmic reason I never see the ones for my pistol on the rack.

Don Q, If you hand load, try making some black powder rounds for the 45 Colt. It means more careful cleaning of the gun and the fired brass but is worth it to me. And the feel of those BP loads is different. A lot of fun.

102 Didn't have a great range day yesterday.
I shot my Kel Tec PF-9, about 25 rounds in, my hand started to hurt. Yeah, it works but full power loads through a subcompact isn't fun.

Then I took out my PPQ 45, freshly back from Walther where they were unable to find anything wrong with it.

In 100 rounds, I had three malfunctions.

Sigh.

This time, two failures were failures to fire. I was riding the reset and twice the striker didn't seem to reset. I pulled the trigger...nothing. No mark on the primer, so it didn't strike it. Third was probably a dud round. But that's still not an encouraging thing.

It's a shame, the PPQ is a stunningly accurate, lightweight pistol and it fits my hand like a glove. But if it won't go 'bang' every time, it's just a range toy.

Also, I didn't shoot to my own standards of accuracy. Just didn't focus well and my grip was off, some flinching took rounds off target low.

All in all, not a great day.

106 Also got talked OUT of getting a new PPQ 22.

The feedback from wise morons here wasn't promising. The trigger felt great, though. (tested using snap caps)

But the rear sights were cheap, cheap wiggly plastic things. And the salesman basically talked me out of buying one. Said it wasn't reliable without expensive, high powered loads.

Fuck it. Maybe I'll get a revolver instead. Or nothing.

That is a helluva deal. I have that exact same pistol, had a powder river 2 lbs installed. Great .45 to shoot. Might have picked up a 25 round pro mag for it. I like gainzz at the range.

I wanted to optimize my trip to the Post Office so I put in another packet for 3 Garands ,

1.) a service grade luck of the draw HRA or SA,

2.) A Service grade IHC

3.) A CMP special (HRA or SA receiver Field grade with pitting above the wood line with a new stock , new barrel in .308.

In other news I picked up another CZ 82 (my fourth one). I really like those pistols.

AND.....

A Yugoslavian M-56 military 22 trainer patterned after the Mauser with same type of safety and general appearance. It has a heavy barrel. As part of military firearms collecting I collect .22 trainers.

Jah. The P22 is a smaller .22. The PPQ .22 does have a hammer (internal) but it's exactly the size of the 9mm version. Which is one reason I wanted it: same size factor for cheaper training.

I understand.

My Glock 21 feels like a plastic brick in my hands. My trigger finger can barely reach the trigger with my small, womanish hands.

But it will put in 3" groups at 25 meters and will cycle every good or bad .45 ammo I put into it and it runs fine when dirty as a pig.

So...that's what I'm carrying it. I dream about replacing it but so far I'm just wasting money.

handguns and shotguns in nyc should have fairly different rules unless they have changed very recently. handgun licenses are $600+, just to apply for and the with little likelihood of getting approved , that is for the permit to own, not carry.

It's a carbon fiber mirage shield. It keeps the heat rising off the hot barrel from distorting the image through the scope. You could use a piece of cardboard or Venetian blind, but the carbon fiber looks cooler and costs a lot more.

The guys in the pit called a hold the first shot I made because they heard a boom before the impact on the target, and they were concerned there was a misfire.

Although when you're in your 20s it can be a little tedious.

Back in the stone age, when I was on my battalion rifle team, we practiced at the known distance range with the battalion machine gun team who were shooting M60s. We'd shoot all morning while they pulled targets, then we'd switch out at lunch time. The only problem is, since us rifle guys pulled targets for the machine gunners, and they'd walk the rounds in (depending on the course of fire they were shooting), we'd get pelted with gravel for half the day. It got old fast.

So some smart aleck rifleman suggests that we should each put a whole magazine into the berm just to give the pig gunners a taste of their own medicine. Yeah, it was fun.

Then at lunch, we passed each other while switching out, and every one of those fuckers had an evil grin on their faces. Grinch grins.

I swear, each gun had to have strung together about 200 rounds of 7.62 and just PULVERIZED the berm. I had gravel and dirt crammed into bodily crevices that I didn't even know existed.

Good times, good times.

you might be misreading the shotgun part. never had any concerns or problems with the shotgun and spent lots of time with guys that went hunting and shooting with shotguns in nyc. not that that is legal advice, but no one had worries about shotguns, pistols were another thing.

one thing that might be helpful with the shotgun is that everyone I know who had / used shotguns bought them outside of the city before moving into the city or at a vacation home and brought them in which only required a license to own not permit to buy.

maybe you have a relative who could gift you one?

The NYC "pistol permit" app is a complete waste of time unless you are law enforcement, ex LE, a movie star or a high level Democrat politician.

The NYC "long gun permit" is entirely a creature of NYC. There is no such thing as "long gun permit" in the rest of the State. So, you should be free to transport your long gun outside of NYC to anywhere else in the State. There is simply no "permit" involved.

However, there are specific rules on transporting firearms. Notably, the gun has to be in a locked case. And, ammo in a separately locked case. Its debatable whether a long gun also needs be "disabled" in its case (i.e. some type of lock on the gun itself, in its locked case). I really don't think so.

And, of course, not in the passenger compartment.

However, if you get a pistol permit (i.e. have residence in another county and get one there) then you can't bring it to NYC without their permit, i.e. it won't ever go into the Shitty.

As to transporting a firearm, for a pistol (which again is a moot point unless you apply from County outside one of the NYC Counties) then I believe you do need a trigger lock on the gun, as well as the separate locked cases.

Pro tip: never a good idea to leave guns in the car (however locked in a trunk) for any period of time except in a safe neighborhood driveway, and that for a limited time. You should invest in good /lockable gun cases. I personally like soft cases with large zippers in which you can use luggage locks. Simple, deters casual theft, safe from inquiring children/non gun people. Check out "Tactical Tailor" for some discreet offerings.

Also, for any "long gun" stored in NYC there is a ridiculous limit on the amount of ammo you can store, something like 200 rounds, which is basically a good day or two at the range, vs the amount of rounds that any actual gun owner (portrayed as a "gun nut" after any shooting) will want to keep in his/her safe.

There is also exactly one range in Manhattan (West side range) which is not great for a long gun (50 foot indoors, no hardball, etc) but it is what it is. Something similar in Bkln.

Basically: get long guns, keep em in a safe, get membership to a real range Upstate and so long as you store them in the trunk and have decent cases to discreetly take them out of your car at your destination.

First, read about the history of the NRA. It was established, in part, to compete in long range internatonal competition. Of course this was all black powder, predating the invention of smokeless.

Second, Ned Roberts' "The Cap-Lock Muzzleloading Rifle" deals with long range shooting matches among other matters. The book is considered a classic. (The author developed the 257 Roberts cartridge.)

It's amazing what those guys were able to achieve back then.

A 450 lb. 30mm Chain Gun mounted to a 15,000 lb. Apache Gunship works due to weight/stability damping effect of the much heavier airframe.

A 15 lb. semi-auto rifle mounted to a 30 lb. drone? Ratios don't favor success, or damn sure, not quick follow up shots.

Conversely.

Drone with quality, lightweight stabilized optics. 10,000 ft. AGL. Spots & locks in on target. Eject/detaches 1/2 of each wing's span, trading lift & drag for speed and roll rate.

Drone points nose-down at target, then fires non-throttle-able 4 second burn gas/catylist rocket, which accelerates it to +/- 300 mph.

The swift, silent dive terminates with the blast of a Claymore-like, multi-projectile warhead, approximately 20 ft. above the target.

Drone dead, target dead.

Reload time for 2nd shot though... launch another drone!

Equipment mostly. And ballistic advances in bullet design i suppose. In a 20 round 1000 yd match it's not unusual for a good shooter to keep half those in the 5 inch x ring. Human head averages 9 inches, or so I'm told.

i shot competition M-60/GPMG with the CA ARNG for 3 years back in the mid-80s... if they were walking the rounds in to hit the targets, they were shit for shooters and/or had shitty coaches, at least on a KD range.

the Pig could be damned accurate, if you treated it right, and the iron sights were dead on, assuming your barrel wasn't a shot out POS.

we'd sit in the neutral space between each 3 target set, just to avoid ricochets coming down through berm. no sense getting blown away at a friendly shooting match.

I will probably try to find some spent brass, and reload them with black powder, and use that liquid primer that is sold for reloading .22LR. Bullets, I can cast from scrap lead (being careful to ensure that they are not too large to pass through the barrel, of course.)

I was an M60 ammo bearer, assistant gunner, gunner, then weapons squad leader in the 82nd. I was married to that weapon for almost four years of my life. I miss it. A funner thing to shoot is hard to imagine.

209 I'm a damned lucky old fart in Central Texas with an embarrassment of riches in shooting events to go to. There's a 1000 yard steel Haji match four times a year, a 200-1000 yard 80 round Black Powder Cartridge Rifle match two or three times a year. Action Pistol, Falling Steel and Steel Challenge pistol every month. F class looks like a hoot but I don't know how I'd fit it into my schedule.
