Hurricane update: Right now the hurricane models are focusing on a landfall somewhere within a range of 100 miles north and 100 miles south of Wilmington, NC. After that, it meanders NW and stalls, which would mean a lot of rain and flooding if it does.
This is obviously Sunday night, and a lot can change and it will change based on new guidance, including landfall location, strength, speed, whether or not it stalls, and if it does stall, where. That being said if you're in NC, SC, GA, VA, MD, Delaware, PA, NJ, and DC in particular pay attention. If you're in the Carolinas and southern VA get prepared. I actually thought Trump would win the popular vote and lose the Electoral vote. I thought he would be very close in the usual blue state blowouts but still lose the state. I didn't think he was going to actually win a couple of these blue / purple states. The Dems didn't either and thus forgot to turn on their fraud machine in those states.

Some great hidden gems on the Grease soundtrack, especially Cindy Bullens' tracks.
I especially still love "It's Raining On Prom Night" and She Na Na's "Those Magic Changes." Bullens' story is especially sad. She was all set to become a superstar around the time the Grease soundtrack came out... then she had a child (daughter?) who got sick with cancer and ultimately died. Drove her so crazy that she's now living as a man and has changed her professional name to... Cidny Bullens (not a typo). Posted by: qdpsteve at September 09, 2018 10:26 PM (feaxc) 112

I will call BS on the dynamite story. Number one: very few people have dynamite lying around. Number two: it doesn't come with a fuse in it. You have to make a hole in the dynamite stick with a brass punch, and then insert an electric blasting cap, or a regular blasting cap crimped onto a length of waterproof fuse. And that fuse will normally be a foot long or more, to give the user enough time to unass the area. And it is real hard to light it, too. The Constitution is designed to protect citizens from the tyranny of the majority, including where amendments are concerned.***
And this is the genius of it. By splitting power in so many different ways the founders made it impossible to "fundamentally transform" the country...at least quickly and without extreme majorities. And this in turn gives people time to see how that "fundamental transformation" turns out in states or localities that try it. But the left knows they aren't being honest in what they are selling so they have to make their changes all at once and permanent in one go. Like, you took control of our government despite having fewer votes because of our poorly designed Constitution.
Trump won seven of the ten most populous states. Five of the ten least populous states were won by Hillary. Trump won the popular vote, excluding California. The entire argument that "Hillary won the popular vote, so she should be President" rests on the assertion that since she ran up a huge vote margin in California, that should invalidate the results in the other 49 states. That is **specifically** what the Constitution was designed to prevent - you have to be generally popular to get elected President, not just run up the vote margin in a handful of big states. Don't argue with liberals.
True enough. Conservatives like Thomas Sowell asked and answered the question why can't they govern? Nobody wants their own state run like California, New York or New Jersey. Nobody wants their own city run like DC, San Francisco, Chicago or Seattle. It could by a pirate curse I think. FDR stole pirate gold accursed by Aztec gods, and until he returns it the dems will be cursed forever ... this is my new position. I will tell all my friends. Who will be the quickest to correct me, Democrats or Republicans? Who can fix them without their consent? What does it matter, when if they don't want to know what is in their own putrid little black hearts? Make them invalid at the national level. Trump has started this. If the parties need to split or shift (because I don't think a single-party country is healthy) then we will deal with that later. Posted by: BourbonChicken at September 09, 2018 11:12 PM (rnAwa) 267

Poor Paul is heading out on a business trip tomorrow, will be home Thursday night, then is going to see our oldest daughter over the weekend. Question/answer at Quora I just have to share:
What is the deadliest amusement park ride? Pam Nathanson / Answered Sep 2 The most dangerous attraction ever in Disneyland was the People Mover. A leisurely, elevated 16-minute ride through Tomorrowland. This Goodyear-sponsored attraction required a D-coupon. You and up to three others in your party rode in one of the 62 four-car trains. Your PeopleMover train doesn't have a motor; the motors are on the track. Every nine feet or so, you'll pass over an electric motor turning a genuine Goodyear tire. The tires turn against the bottom of your vehicle, propelling you forward. There are 517 of these motor-driven units on the 3/4-mile elevated glideway. They range from 1/3 to 3 horsepower each because the glideway sometimes goes uphill or downhill. Your speed ranges from 1 1/2 to 7 m.p.h. Yes, you read that right: from 1 1/2 to 7 m.p.h. So how on earth could that make it the deadliest attraction in Disneyland history? On August 21, 1967 17-year-old Ricky Lee Yama fell from the People Mover and was crushed to death beneath the ride's wheels. Seems that Ricky and a couple of his friends were jumping from car to car when he slipped and fell to the track. A security officer who was called to the scene looked under the car and noticed the victim's head had been cut in two. The ride had to be dismantled to remove the body. The vicious People Mover would strike again, but this time it would take on many people at once in 1968 when, during a rain storm at the top of a steep bend in the track, one of the car's wheels would begin to slip. The car began rolling backwards, smashing into the front of the trailing car. Then those two cars skidded backwards causing a chain reaction as it threw passengers from the seats and into poles, bars and surrounding walls. One woman smashed heads with her daughter cutting her cheek open on the girl's hair clip. Of course, lawsuits were filed and Disneyland settled with the 23 injured parties (amount unknown) before finally installing non-skid pneumatic tires. In 1972, four teenagers riding the People Mover met tragedy when a gust of wind blew the Mickey Mouse cap off the head of one member of the group as the ride made its way past the Progress City Exhibit. Two of the girls exited the car by climbing over the side to retrieve the hat. They then thought it best to run along the track to hop aboard the next car. One young girl made it, the other ran out of the end of the tunnel and off the track platform before free falling to the concrete 30 feet below. But before landing, the 14-year-old hit a railing which surely added to her injuries which included bruises, cuts, a broken leg, pelvis, and hip. Three months in a body cast and an inserted steel plate and pin in her leg helped the girl eventually walk again. Naturally, she sued the park asserting that there should have been a guard rail at the end of the tunnel. The court disagreed and Disneyland prevailed. In 1979 a similar incident occurred when a 4-year-old boy decided to crawl out of his slow-moving People Mover car to join his parents in the trailing car. At the time, the car was 30 feet above the Tomorrowland complex. The boy fell and landed on the pavement between America Sings and Mission to Mars. Fortunately the boy survived, but he did suffer a double skull fracture. On June 7, 1980 during Grad Night celebration Gerardo Gonzales drove up to the park from San Diego and thought it would be a good idea to jump from car to car on the People Mover ride. Naturally, he slipped and was crushed underneath the ride's wheels after being dragged for hundreds of feet. The People Mover unfortunately has no "dead man switch" which quickly shuts down the ride when something goes wrong. It's important to keep in mind that the evil people-eating People Mover ride "zips" along at a blazing 2 miles-per-hour. Perhaps it's that calm sense of "Disney" peace that allows people to put their brave faces on and act carelessly around what should be a harmless attraction. Another accident occurred on the People Mover ride in 1993, though this time it wasn't from someone being stupid. An electrical fire broke out on the ride as it passed through Tron Tunnel near the America Sings building. Ride operators and automatic sprinklers quickly extinguished the fire before it was able to injure any park guests, though several employees suffered minor smoke inhalation. Unless it's left-handed threads. There's quite a few of those out there, usually on rotating things like pulleys and gears. The idea is to make the torque tend to tighten to the nut, not loosen it, and sometimes that requires left-handed threads. I've got a Woods 3pt hitch mower that has left handed threads on the blades. A few years ago, my 80+ yr old father was taking those off to sharpen the blades. He had got out our big 3/4" impact wrench, cheat bars on a 3/4" drive pull handle and all that. He had forgotten it was left-handed threads. I simply said, "Daddy, it's left-handed", flipped the direction on the impact, and it came loose. Well, it had to hammer a bit because of how much he had tightened it trying to loosen it. He gave me a look. There was a mass-knifing in Paris a few hours ago. Most news outlets are being very cagey and intentionally vague as to the knifer's identify. But of course, the Paris knife attacker turned out to be "Afghan," yet his motive is (needless to say) totally unknown! The one thing we're sure it isn't is terrorism, the government assures us:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45468082 Yeah, not terrorism -- it's just the craziest coincidence that 99% of the time, when someone goes on a murderous mass-killing rampage in Europe, he just happens to be Muslim. Slaveholder vs slaveowner, by most dictionaries they are equivalent. I suspect the quote was in reference to the laws that required slaves who escaped to the North be returned to their owners in the South. The Fugative Slave Act required it, although to be completely accurate the law was usually ignored unless slave catchers forced enforcement. My home town (Syracuse) famously has at least one enraged mob break into the local jail to free a resident local escaped slave, as sometimes happened elsewhere.

Re: the Electoral College, the original purpose was two-fold, (1) to allow for 18th century travel time and
(2) to prevent Super-Sized States (then being Virginia, now being California, New York, etc.) from being able to ramrod their candidates into office without the consent of the rest. Thus requiring candidates for the most national of offices (P/VP) to appeal to a national voter base instead of a regional one. Obviously, reason #1 doesn't apply anymore. However, #2 still does. And given (D) abhorrence to requiring (free) voter ID to vote, brings us to reason #3..... (3) to serve as a firebreak vs voter fraud from mono-party states like CA, NY, etc., where one political party is so entrenched that the vote count can become questionable. If all of a state's EC votes are already pretty much guaranteed to go to one party, additional voter fraud only affects local elections, not the presidential one. So even if the dead rise from their graves to vote (D) and the Alzheimer's nursing homes mysteriously have identical voter registration signatures for their residents and all vote (D), and any other vote fraud scenario gets enacted by the Ruling Machine the presidential election - at least - won't be affected. Much. Posted by: BobM at September 10, 2018 02:49 AM (Xbthd) 434

Pretty sure it's benign, but something that large gets staged (if cancerous). Yep, winter's coming. Will have to turn on some obsolete desktops just to keep the office warm. Might as well turn them into file servers. Posted by: Konrad Oh Cho Hausen Zee at September 10, 2018 07:43 AM (I9Sw7) 545

I'm convinced the man goes to sleep in his suit, the alarm goes off at 04:30 and he rises ram rod straight up in manner reminiscent of a Noseferatu to start his day and conduct his business. The man needs an action figure. Posted by: Kreplach I would not vote for Hillary. I doubted Trump! would do any good. About 2 weeks before the election and he was campaigning. it seemed, everywhere at once. My doubts started to ease. Posted by: Bruce at September 10, 2018 07:46 AM (8ikIW) 548

> Upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04, 'Bionic Beaver.'
Upgrade from what? 18.04 is very stable in my experience- also 18.04 is a LTR (Long Term Release), so support will be available for quite a while. 18.10 comes out in 6 weeks, for those chasing the bleeding edge Posted by: Layabout Union Rep at September 10, 2018 07:48 AM (Xw5Ml) Posted by: rhennigantx at September 10, 2018 07:48 AM (JFO2v) 551

At work, we used to fly Southwest from Norfolk to Jacksonville because they were the only airline with a direct route. They don't anymore, and most flights layover in Baltimore.
Since we also fly regularly to Spain via American, we've just sucked it up (and layover in Charlotte or Atlanta) and flown with them, even if their miles program is awful. Posted by: Jeff Weimer at September 10, 2018 07:54 AM (cvabZ) 556

Ah, liberty in Jacksonville. Brings back memories, so it does. I suppose they figured that they owed us for when the Forrestal was in Blighty, but damn that was thirty years ago.
Forrestal was home-ported in Jacksonville then. Oh what fun we used to have... I'm sure the statutes of limitations have all run out by now. Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at September 10, 2018 07:58 AM (vbvxt) 562
Actual Comet Song Lyrics, as I remember them....
Sung to tune from Bridge over the River Kwai... "Comet! Will make your mouth turn green! Comet! Will make your mooooother scream! Comet! Will make you vomit! So get some Comet! And vomit! Toooodaaaaay!" Repeat chorus endlessly....... Alternately, sing The Plastic Bag Song..... Not sure what you call the original tune..... "Suffocation! Let's play suffocation! Suffocation! THAT's the game to play! First you take a plastic bag. Then you put it on your head. Go to bed. Wake up dead. Whohohoho...." Reappear endlessly..... Great song to teach your kids in the car on a long drive. Just make sure to point out the point of the song is NOT to put a plastic bag on your head - kids being idiots. Still shake my head at a neice who - leaving the theater after a viewing of Pretty Woman - got the impression from the happy ending that this was the typical end game for a prostitute - forgetting the in-movie rant about how dead-end the job normally is......
