The pious ones of Plymouth, who, reaching the Rock, first fell upon their knees and then upon the aborigines.

Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they were known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction, and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden.

If we open a quarrel between the past and the present, we will find that we have lost the future.

He is 53-years old, and his heart is filled with love. But just as important, he elicits the same feeling in others. If that is not the definition of being human, I can't think of a better one.

And I adore how his dad says, "You need a shave..."

***

One of the brats has exhibited a surprising and gratifying interest in history, and is wonderfully unburdened by preconceived notions. Well, to be precise, he is willing to discard those notions when presented with data, and I can ask for nothing better.

We were recently at the Imperial War Museum in London, which has on its top floor a powerful and respectful exhibit on the Holocaust. One of its themes is the careful grooming of the German people to accept genocide, and the first step was the dehumanization and, ultimately, murder of the margins of society; the sickly and the retarded and the crippled. As we were walking to the tube after the visit, we talked about it, and I pointed out that it encapsulated my objection to abortion, which is at its simplest a rejection of the humanity of the fetus. Beyond that, great evil emerges, because that is a line that we cannot cross.

Maybe I'm just being sensitive, but when one of the more significant terrorists of the last 35 years expresses support for you, maybe it's time to reevaluate...

My Twitter Feed
In case any of you actually read it, I have decided to be combative and inflammatory, and I am curious how long it will take for Twitter to marginalize me or just cancel my account. I am already blocked by a surprising number of people on the left...people with whom I have had no interaction. Why, it's almost as if they are keeping lists!

"The priests stretched out their hands over him, loudly crying, 'These are not men, but oxen!' and the surrounding crowd repeated, 'Oxen! Oxen!'... The victims were barely at the edge of the opening when they disappeared like a drop of water on a red-hot plate, and a puff of white smoke rose up against the great scarlet mass... This lasted a long time until the evening. By then the inner walls shone less brightly. Burning flesh could now be seen. Some even thought they could recognize hair, limbs, whole bodies."

Right you are. Like other "uncomfortable" or "divisive" topics, it is buried in silence by our media betters because abortion, like homosexuality, is sacred and never to be questioned in any way, regardless of what really goes on.

113 Bluebell - A couple of nights ago, we were talking about blue jean manufacturers on the ONT.

Meant to post this, FWIW:

"Wrangler Jeans were first made by the Blue Bell Overall Company, who acquired the brand when they took over Casey Jones in the mid-1940s. Blue Bell employed Bernard Lichtenstein ('Rodeo Ben'), a Polish tailor from Łódź who worked closely with cowboys, to help design jeans suitable for rodeo use. This was the origin of Wrangler Jeans. To everyone who's emailed me about my wedding adventures: My Part 2 story is in the comments in Thursday Sep 6's Overnight Open Thread. Do a search for "Lafayette" and the story should come up.

Unfortunately my Part 1, that I posted on either the previous Sunday or Monday night, seems to be gone and in the archives.

CBD, would/could you be so kind as to find my (very long) comment in either one of those ONT threads, and email it to me at QDPSJL at gmail? Doing a search for my nic, or "Lafayette," should also help there with finding it. Thanks in advance, if you can.

And I will have the exciting conclusion, Part 3, in a bit. Spoiler alert: I lived!

116 ...the careful grooming of the German people to accept genocide...

===

I think this is a very important concept that is missing from most peopke's conception if the Holocaust.

The Nazis didn't take power and then simply begin marching people into the gas chambers.

The mass murders were the culmination of a process of cumulative radicalization. Indeed they ere only made possible by this process.

The boycott of Jewish businesses which began on April 1, 1933 was called off after a few days because the German people didn't accept it. They marched right past the SA and into the same establishments they always patronized.

But by the time of Kristallnacht five and half years later, they stood by while synagogues burned and innocent people were murdered in the street.

I wasn't familiar with that quote, so I went looking for context. It appears to be from his "their finest hour" speech; at the opening of the third paragraph he's saying that there's no point in laying blame and recrimination within parliament about the defeat in France at that time, that it will be done to death later, and he's calling for solidarity and action moving forward.

Maybe this was common knowledge and I'm just not as familiar as I should be with Churchill's speeches. Anyway, there it is, in case anyone else was wondering what in particular he was referring to.

In the disturbing aspects of modern biomedical tech, we have posthumous fatherhood:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6147071

A very wealthy Brit couple's 26 yr. old son was killed in a motorcycle accident. His body wasn't found for two days. They harvested his still alive sperm from his body, had it frozen and then later found an egg donor and surrogate and then had their grandchild.

They had do the procedure over here in the US because it would violate UK law.

Now, what do y'all think of that?

I hate to burst any bubbles, but baldness does not correlate with testosterone levels. You can have bald soyboys and dudes with Jack Lord hair in their 60s with raging testosterone levels.

DHT, a metabolite of testosterone is what causes male pattern baldness. That stuff is funny. It kills the hair on your hear, but makes it grow everywhere else.

But it's the sensitivity of the head hair follicles to it that varies, and also how much DHT the body makes. There are several metabolic pathways for testosterone, and it varies from individual to individual.

As you get older, your body shifts T metabolism more into the DHT pathway. More DHT stimulates more body hair growth. In terrible places. How much more DHT varies.

This is why the nose and ear hair starts sprouting. Now, as the DHT rises, it starts thinning the hair on your head. How much depends on how sensitive your follicles are, which depends on your genes.

It was easy for me because I have outlets on the ceiling my from and back porches, but since the cameras are wifi, I didn't have to run any wires back to the DVR.

The picture is so clear and the colors true. And the night vision is fantastic. I should be able to see the coyotes that I believe are roaming my property at night.

Anyway, so far, at less that $200, I recommend this unit.

The girl is and was always a sweetheart, but the boy was - well, I remember being around the kid when he was 8 or so and thinking this was the sort of boy who would grow up to kill someone. He was flat out mean and bullying and just creepy, with no friends and serious behavioral problems. I haven't seen him since then, but I was told that after a lot of therapy, he seemed to get his act together. He's a college graduate and 25 now.

Last night, when he was very drunk, he got in a fight with his roommate and attacked the other man with a knife. The guy got it away from him. He also pulled a loaded gun on the roomie but thankfully was too drunk to shoot it. He collapsed and had a seizure after that and his roommate called 911. After being treated at the hospital, he was arrested and booked.

I had been happy to hear he had become "normal." I guess he's not. He's 25 now. His poor parents.

343 >> My bro is that taxes and government is socialism and that own nothing if the government taxes you.

That's a purely libertarian type of argument and it is valid. For example, take property taxes. Don't pay, state takes you property away. How can you really be said to own it?

I'm sympathetic to that. So you ask the question, what is just to tax, what are the limits on taxation.

Not the sales taxes, income taxes, excise taxes and all are taxes on transactions, not existing property. If you do no activity, you don't pay any taxes, and nothing you own can be taken away.

I did some clever math to determine that all the CO2 in the atmosphere, were it turned into dry ice, would be no more than a 1.5 inch crust on our oceans. That it could be a prime driver of climate is laughable.

Apparently sperm cells can remain viable for a while after the body dies, and they were able to get viable sperm out of him, then froze it.

My first reaction to this was horror, but it prompted to think about why, and try to analyze it. Would I really say this should be banned.

I think what makes it so creepy is that it was done after he died.

Suppose someone (and people do this) had his sperm, or her eggs frozen just in case. They do this as sort of insurance if say, oh, you get your balls chopped off, or have some disease that destroys your fertility.

Some women do it for career reasons. Save their eggs when they're young, then use them later when their ovaries are dried up if necessary.

You can construct an otherwise identical scenario as the Brit couple, save for the fact the donor is dead and it wouldn't strike me as so creepy.

419 "Socialism" was a word coined by Welsh textile millionaire Robert Owen. It is the theory that society is to blame for everything. And only when society is fixed, can individuals do what is right.

It is very associated with society. Where it came into the Marxist spectrum, is that Owen started a commune in NY State to fix all society's ills, and Marx observed that the problem with socialism was that it was voluntary.

The Brit couple are very wealthy, and so money for all this was no object. They wanted a blood heir.

Anyway, they had to do it here, because it would be against UK law. What's illegal in Britain has nothing to do with him being dead, but a matter of consent. The law says the "donors" have to give consent to have their sperm/egg used to fertilize and create a viable embryo.

So, being dead, the son couldn't consent. Note it was legal to harvest the sperm from the body. So they did, then brought it over here to do the procedure.

I saw something in Staples a while back that intrigued me: an inkjet printer with reservoirs that accepted bulk ink. That gets you away from the "death-gene" Hell imposed by the manufacturers of printer cartridges, who age them out, even if scantily used.

Easy solution: have firmware in the printer to trigger it to automatically print a test page two weeks after its last actual use, and every second week after that, unless it gets used again. So you burn up 26 pieces of paper, and a small amount of ink, but avoid trashing the print head and reservoirs.

More difficult solution: if the reservoirs are removable, pull them out, replace with reservoirs of cleaning solution, and "print" pages using the cleaning solution until the prints are quite blank. Cleaning solution formulated to be able to dry out without leaving solid residue behind.

Would you hold that it is conception by a dead man if the sperm had been extracted before clinical death (by whatever definition)?

Suppose someone had his sperm (or egg) frozen, died later, and then the wife used that frozen sperm to conceive a child. The IVF was done after the man's death, but the sperm was harvested before death.

496 Socialism is when a teacher tells each student to bring in 10 glue sticks which all go into a bin that she keeps in her cabinet. Six sticks are put in a basket at each table.

Taxation is when a teacher tells each student to make sure they have a glue stick in their own school box, but also bring in one to put into the bin in her closet for whoever needs one.

Owen invented the term. Marx changed it, but was mainly referring to what Owen was trying to do in his commune.

There was nothing to say "no" to, unless you can refute that Owen coined the word, that he ran a commune, or that Marx referred to that commune, and suggested that it ought to be a revolution of state not a voluntary association, as it was under Owen.

515 Easy solution: have firmware in the printer to trigger it to automatically print a test page two weeks after its last actual use, and every second week after that, unless it gets used again. So you burn up 26 pieces of paper, and a small amount of ink, but avoid trashing the print head and reservoirs. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

No, try every other day.

More difficult solution: if the reservoirs are removable, pull them out, replace with reservoirs of cleaning solution, and "print" pages using the cleaning solution until the prints are quite blank. Cleaning solution formulated to be able to dry out without leaving solid residue behind.

The ink cartridges are an integral unit; you cannot disassemble them anymore. They're chipped as well.

Epson has a different kind of reservoir and might be the optimal choice for ink jet but you still have to use them several times a week to keep the ink flowing.

Was replacing carpet tiles in the vestibule of the store we're working at. Pulled the old tiles up and there's brick underneath with loose underlayment. So we had to scrape and chisel the old stuff up and pour another thin layer of "fast setting" concrete. Unfortunately it takes up to six hours for this stuff to set.

I had some stuff that sets in 30 minutes, but not nearly enough. And the supply houses are all closed, of course. One of the bad things about working at night and something unexpected comes up.

561 " Marx got a distorted view of the industrial revolution. He lived in one of the grayest, and direst cities in the world,"

Yes, there were a lot of families, and devout believers there too. That would explain why he wanted to destroy both the family and religion.

"Abolition [Aufhebung] of the family! Even the most radical flare up at this infamous proposal of the Communists."

"But Communism abolishes eternal truths, it abolishes all religion, and all morality, instead of constituting them on a new basis"

572 So the next time we have a tree fall, we can just get it dragged to a neighboring marxist's house and demand payment for the firewood? Is that how this works?
Posted by: OldDominionMom at September 09, 2018 01:16 AM (t0Z53)
---
The stupidity of LToV, it's that labor is the only determinant. I guess you could charge everybody in your town, since Marx *insisted* demand plays *no* part. (Otherwise, wage would reflect the owner's demand schedule for labor, precisely what Marx denies.)

There is no scaling factor without demand. Notice how it easily becomes ambiguous how much one tree's work of labor is. But how much worth somebody it's willing to part with, becomes obvious as the limit.

The stocks and foreends of the CETME rifles were made from poplar. The popular (SWIDT) name in Spain for them was 'chopo' (poplar wood, of course), and consequently 'chopo' has become a not-entirely-uncommon colloquialism for any firearm in some Spanish-speaking countries.

AS LtCol Dubois mentioned, making a mud pie and an apple pie both involve labor. No matter how skilled the maker, no matter how much labor goes into it, the value of a mud pie is essentially zero.

Conversely, the same labor devoted to an apple pie creates more value than the apples, flour, sugar, etc. that go into it.

688 After that un-ranking loss by Michigan State, I turned it over to HBO, and there was this story on Vice about Evangelicals. And this stupid pastor plays right into the lefty's strawman.

The lady reporter asks him about Trump's personal morality, and he asks her if she's ever heard anybody argue anything different? (Good point, here).

She goes on, "But I thought that personal morality was very important to evangelicals? But they largely support Trump". And he goes into this thing about being "scared about the rate of change of society"!

Rate of change?! It's the *change*, not the rate. We've watched the left intrude again and again on basic liberties, like when Hobby Lobby was compelled by the state to violate thier conscience and provide abortifacients. Or the gay wedding campain.

It's not just the speed. It's a qualitative change. The day has been drawing ever closer when the left says that some earnest statement of the principles of conservatives is not "protected speech". The initial wave about criminalizing "misgendering" was the left leaning toward *forcing* words into people's mouths.

Conservative Christians don't need any more spokesman who are simply going to mouth what the left wants to hear!

Posted by: Axeman at September 09, 2018 02:41 AM (oqxAy)

689 One of its themes is the careful grooming of the German people to accept genocide, and the first step was the dehumanization and, ultimately, murder of the margins of society; the sickly and the retarded and the crippled. As we were walking to the tube after the visit, we talked about it, and I pointed out that it encapsulated my objection to abortion, which is at its simplest a rejection of the humanity of the fetus. Beyond that, great evil emerges, because that is a line that we cannot cross.

I have been working on a theory, a sometimes late-night theory, which could perhaps make it less then valid... that our very natural system of hormones is behind a lot of the divide between left and right. Between good and evil.

Specifically oxytocin. Not the drug oxycotin -- which is a strangely named narcotic. Oxytocin, a natural hormone produced by the human body. Some have referred to it as the 'love drug'. Fall in love, oxytocin is involved -- hugely. For a pregnant woman, the level rises sky high and her breast milk begins. Attend a wedding, and every one in attendance has their level rise higher. A bonding mechanism.

So when we bond with our own husbands, wives, offspring, perhaps even fellow attendees at a wedding, it changes us forever. The safety and security of our loved ones rises on a pyramid -- similar to Maslow's hierarchy of needs -- to the very top.

We don't see the issue of illegal immigration through some misguided altruistic prism, but through the razor sharp lens of, 'Does this threaten those I love?' Of course... those who would break in our homes, steal our food, threaten our children or health, these are people we have to place under the most rigorous of restraint. Because we love.

So if I might suppose, the left is the loveless. Ready, willing, perhaps even eager to end pregnancies. Ready, willing, and eager to engage in self-fulling relationships with no bonding. Ready, willing, and eager to engage in pure pleasure for the sake of pleasure, in any sort of imaginable deviancy which they now seek (even demand) to normalize, eager to move on and not bond. An emotional hole is in their souls. A hole that the human body is quite prepared to fill, but they subvert the process. Intentionally, I might imagine. For whatever purpose, I have absolutely no clue.

So when they point at us (as they always do, because they constantly project) and claim that we don't care about others, think about this... and perhaps wonder if this theory actually fits their behavior.

What I kinda get from what you're saying is that the left could be further along in a sort of sociopathic spectrum than conseratives tend to be.

It actually would explain how they are dead to 3 of the 6 moral values that convservatives identify, as Jonathan Haydt published. It would also expain the observation that liberals tend to be transactional in almost all interchanges.

Checking out one of his tests...

The big difference between liberals and conservatives seems to be that conservatives score slightly higher on the ingroup/loyalty foundation...

I would expect more then a slight difference. Especially when prefaced by the words 'big difference'.

How can there be a 'big difference' then a 'slightly higher' anything?

If you make a clumsy attempt to persuade them you are not evil, the will roll their eyes. If you make an excellent attempt, they will think you are Satan himself as demonstrated by the powers of your voice.

Don't talk to them. I'm not defeated to say DON'T TALK TO THEM. They knew they were wrong when Trump didn't round up all the gheys in his first month. This is where we are, locked in with lunatics. Fortunately they are a minority, or the civil war would have already started.

If it was an act he needs to be in Hollywood cause he sold being clueless so well. I especially liked the part where he cut off a large truck and blocked traffic. And then couldn't figure out how to get us near our gate, driving a good deal down, perhaps to pad the meter but costing himself a tip.

761 I think a key part of the Uber/Lyft business model was pioneered in Central/Eastern Europe.

I always (like other non-stupid people) knew to tell the cabbie immediately "I don't need a receipt". Then negotiate the fare before going anywhere.

The newer model is common sense applied, and the great benefit is that you don't have to agree the price personally, because most people don't like to haggle, and don't know how to do it.

A cabbie taking a fare to the airport and 'getting lost' makes more bank than a tip is worth. Especially in an area like DC where you can go miles out of the way at $2.16 per mile (on top of the $3 charge just for flipping on the meter). And if a cabbie gets stuck in traffic while 'lost', that's $2 for every five minutes not moving. A 'good' bad cabbie makes sure he gets a tip one way or another.

You have to read the fine print on the side of the cab very carefully. It might just say 'CAPITOL CAB' is large black lettering but 'and tours' in miniscule print.

Ah, I was distracted by the green crescent moon which had me wondering how SJW the taxi commission was.

The tip was lost by stopping like a block or more away from the gate as one of the traveling companions had mobility issues.

So that plus the wonder of what joys I'd experience trying to fly after losing/having my wallet (and thus ID) stolen did not leave anyone in a generous mood.

He wasn't legal. Couldn't be seen dropping you off.

A bunch of us were just using Uber in Spain. The software, the system, and the service was top-notch. It wasn't always cheaper than a cab, but it was nice knowing the price up front. Most of the drivers had luxury cars (compared to the general populace) and most even wore ties! Very impressed with the whole thing.

NYC has two types of taxis. The metered kind are mostly in Manhattan and the airports. Out here in the boroughs, we rely on car service, an older version of Uber. You call the office and request a car. They'll ask where you're going and give you the dollar amount for the fare, not including tip. It's supposed to be illegal for these car service cars to pick up fares on the street but they do it anyway. Unless a cop sees it, who's going to complain?

When I have to get somewhere in the early morning, I'll call the car service the night before and they'll have a car at my door at zero gawd almighty early no problem. I've 'reserved' a car for the morning often when I have to be at the hospital at 6:00 a.m. for some procedure/surgery.

The car services are cheaper because of the flat rate. And they get you where you're going in a hurry, too, because of the flat rate. The car service cars are roomier as they are sedan-type cars as opposed to the smaller medallion taxis which can break my knees as I cram into the back seat.
