Gun Thread [Weasel]

2.1 John Browning.jpg
John Moses Browning

Designed by John M Browning, the M1911 and 1911A1 chambered in .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) served as the country's standard-issue sidearm for 75 years. As with the .38 Special, the need for a larger and more effective defensive cartridge became evident from combat experience gained during action in the Phillipines. Military testing began around 1906 and continued until the Colt - a magazine fed, single action semi-automatic pistol designed by Browning - was formally adopted in 1911. The autoloader design, based on the short recoil principle of operation, has been universally acknowledged for its durability, simplicity and reliability.

Popular bullet weights are 185gr and 230gr, and like all straight walled cartridges, reloading the .45 ACP is fun and generally economical. As a matter of preference I tend to stay away from the upper end of speed and pressure curves, and with this cartridge I look for velocities around 800fps using W231, Bullseye, or a number of other fast burning powders.

2.2 1911A1.jpeg
1945 Remington Rand 1911A1

Over the years, countless variants of the same basic design have been produced and remain very popular among shooters today. Millions were produced under military contract before being replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1985 in an effort to standardize ammunition among NATO allies. Production included several other notable wartime manufacturers, including Remington Rand, Ithaca Gun Co., Union Switch and Signal, and Singer.

Volumes have been written about the 1911, the quintessential military sidearm and the standard against which all other autoloading pistols are measured. The example pictured above, one of the last produced by Remington Rand in 1945, has been through the arsenal process at least once and remains a fine shooter to this day.

1964 Colt National Match

Based on the same design is this pre-70 series Colt 1911 National Match. Made of premium components and designed for the civilian competition market, the NM designation predates the Colt Gold Cup models marketed later. This pistol shipped to the John Jovino gun shop in New York City in 1964. It is extremely accurate and makes even this shooter look good.

2.5 M44 Inyo Ranger.jpg
Mossberg M44

From the collection of Inyo Ranger comes this M44 Mossberg, the Civilian model of an armed forces .22 training rifle. In a great example of a family's firearms being passed through the generations, he writes:

"My sons and I call it "Grandad" since it was given to my Father by his Father in '44. My Father used a similar rifle while taking basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Base in '47. It is the first firearm I ever shot."

Great story and the rifle is in remarkable condition! Congratulations and thanks for sharing, Inyo Ranger!

And I have Remington Rand WWII ..... grips .... for my 1911. It's a Springfield Mil-Spec, so looks a tiny bit different from your beautiful WWII model. Got the grips cheap from Simpson Ltd., I think they're in IL.

Like you I load 45ACP to just reliably cycle the pistol. And I believe 800fps is the mil-spec for the ball ammo load. My standard load is 200g semi-wadcutter (Missouri Bullet), BHN 12 (the softer ones), over 5.4g of HP

15 This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the 1918 Spanish Influenza, a name spuriously applied because only the Spanish newspapers reported the conditions in Europe accurately.

The only 1911 I have is a US PROPERTY, made during the height of the epidemic in October 1918. Between Sept. and Dec. of 1918, about 700,000 Americans died of the flu, and factories in the US were nearly crippled of production that autumn.

As a microbiologist, my Oct. Spanish Flu Colt 1911, and Colt 1903 .32 made the same month, are iconic.

The flu was the one enemy the 1911 could not slay.

18 One of the better stories about 1911's is the Singer contract. Not many were produced by them, as the government yanked the contract. Why? They were too good. Workmanship was of such a high grade it was reasoned Singer would produce very close tolerance products for the war effort, such as gyro parts. Most, but not all Singers were distributed to other manufacturers for process engineering use. Singer pistols are very rare.

I read a book about the Spanish flu a few years ago. It's author said the flu originated in Kansas. Because it was funneled through an army training base in Kansas to Europe, it was dubbed the Spanish Flu.

27 Thanks, Rhomboid.

The strange black finish on the 1918 ‘Black Army’ 1911’s, and their corner-cutting on the milling, and polishing, must have been due in part to the absenteeism during the epidemic.

33 Cicero, The origin of the flu to Kansas is a supposition which may be true. It is known the initial cases were repirted there, and shortly thereafter at Fort Devens, MA.

We now know the strain was a pure H1N1 bird flu, and did not require the usual cycling through hogs to gain human to human transmission properties.

This puts a dent in the Kansas hog farm hypothesis.

40 I have never seen a picture of Saint Browning smiling.

Did the bastard have any teeth?

Russia week. I took my 1943 Mosin-Nagant 91/30 Rifle and 1945 M44 Carbine version, which I like better, to the range this week.

The 91/30 is very accurate, but the finish is rough due to the wartime production. However, I read somewhere that the Russian troops had to keep their bayonets fixed at all times while on the move/attack, so the sight picture is a big bayonet blob when used that way and you have to guess at your aim point. Rugged and dependable if a bit clunky. After a 100 rounds, it will leave a nice red spot on your shoulder. Made in 1943, so it may have killed a Kraut or two, or a deserting Russian peasant.

The M44 Carbine is short, stocky and a bear to shoot, but accurate. The bayonet swings on a hinge like the SKS but to the side. It has a box marking for the 2nd GRAU Arsenal where it was refurbished. Don't know what a GRAU is but they did a nice job! Made in 1945 so probably never saw combat.

Dependable, tough and idiot proof-typical Russian weaponry.

If there's any concern, I don't know that I would risk it, frankly. I recently had to pass through Maryland and was a nervous wreck even though I knew I was within the law under the Firearms Owner Protection Act. Apparently Maryland will arrest you first and insist that you plead your case before a judge. An affirmative defense, IIRC. Worse, I've read that they have cameras that compare out of state tags to concealed carry records, and they'll target those people on purpose.

Yuck.

From my recent experience I'd just be sure I spent an extra few bucks and stayed in a safe part of town and carry a kid's baseball bat (and glove and baseball, of course) in the car. Assuming that's within the law, of course.

Good luck.

65 Hairyback Guy, have a bunch of 91/30s and an M38, the carbine version without a bayonet. I have a stack (literally) of Soviet and east-bloc surplus ammo in spam cans, so I shoot them without a thought to ammo cost.

Love them. I refinish the shellac finish when it gets too beat up, think I've come pretty close in replicating the Soviet "red" shellac look from the arsenal.

Don't know what "GRAU" is - I should know - but probably an acronym for one of the arsenals. Does the stock have the cartouche of the little box with the diagonal line through it (like a scuba flag)? That's the Ukraine arsenal, where it seems much of the Mosin stockpile was re-arsenaled.

Now I have a question for gun thread people that's not exactly guns but it is about splodey.

I watch and read pretty much all I can about military history and it's always this side dropped 5 trillion tons of high explosive on that side, or engaged in an artillery barrage lasting mumbledy hours.

I keep thinking about the resource of high explosives. I've looked it up a couple of times and just get chemical formulas.

How do nations produce endless quantities of high explosive? What do you have to dig out of the ground? Is it rare? I don't understand how large scale war works.

76 Wiki had it - GRAU - Glavnoye Raketno-Artilleriskoye Upravleniye - "Main Rocket-Artillery Directorate". Four or five locations carry the designation, so hard to say where your rifle was worked on.

77 I almost got kicked off the range one day when I was shooting my M44 Mosin Carbine. The range master guy came out of the big house and came over to the rifle range and said he thought I was shooting a .50 cal BMG due to the noise and muzzle blast on that thing.
Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at September 02, 2018 08:09 PM (JUOKG)

Yup......I try to keep an open slot or two between me and other shooters so I won't annoy any adjacent shooters. The muzzle blast alone will curl your nose hair. 7.62 x 54r is loud mother.

90 Bander, our usual chemists don't seem to be here, but explosives are chemical compounds, the conventional ones don't involve super-high technology or process, nor are the feed-stock materials rare.

As for large scale industrial war, and to tie in to this thread, the reloading industry/hobby partly arose from the fact that after WWII, there were tremendous stockpiles of gunpowder excess to national needs. I believe Hodgdon, one of the premier names in gunpowder for reloaders, literally had its start when the founder bought train-car loads of surplus powder for resale.

And I shoot Soviet surplus ammo (oldest has been from 1946), and many milsurp rifle owners still shoot WWII surplus, though it's finally running out, it seems.

Neon. Read this. Bigly important and absolutely material to your inquiry.

http://toolsofrenewal.com/?p=11543

Short version. Retire the Marlin, and don't spend another cent on the thing.

I had an early 1970s version of one, sold under the Montgomery Ward label "Glenfield". That's back when Marlin made some quality items. But I remember also, that the Glenfield was a piece of crap compared to my Remington 572 pump .22, or my friend's Remington 522 Speedmaster, semi-auto.

You've got so very many great .22 semi choices out there today. The 10/22 is out of patent, so there's a number of clones out there that improve on the breed. ANY thing by CZ is absolutely TOP NOTCH.

And dollar for dollar, pound for pound, you won't beat the value of a Savage, as long as it's a model with the Accu-Trigger.

The Marlin? Use it till it dies, then break it down, sell it for parts at a gun show.

That would be it's highest and best use.

149 In addition in New Jersey remember the following:
"Excuse me officer are you stating that under color of New Jersey state law that you are depriving me of my right to keep and bear arms?" If he answers "Yes" look to see if he is armed. If he is, state that you are placing him under arrest for committing a federal felony in violation of 18 U.S. Code 242.

Then say: "You have a right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have a right to an attorney, and to have one present during questioning. ITC, you'll be happy to hear that reloading components are now back to "normal" in terms of availability and price.

I actually weathered both panics (2008 and 2011?) OK, as I had the factory ammo I needed and plenty of components. Though I did buy some different powders than I might have, out of necessity/curiosity, which ended up being a good thing. Just got to taste/experiment a bit more than I might have.

"The database is directly connected to another Maryland technological

system synergized with the MCAC Hub.

All license plates travelling through ALPR assignments are
recorded. The system is set up to allow flags to automatically notify
local LEO. Every time one of the flagged license plates are detected
by the ALPR an alert is generated."

Read that last paragraph again. The article says some are stationary to let you drive by them, and others are on patrol cars to let them drive by you. I'd imagine tens of thousands of cars are routinely passed by one patrol car every day.

I'm not contesting your description of Percival's performance at Singapore. Apples, organges, and mangoes in some ways - but imagine Singapore holding out like Stalingrad, or even half as fanatically, with all the men and resources they had - might have introduced a wildly different vibe to the first 6 months of the Pacific War, which otherwise was one constant roll call of Japanese triumphs and Allied defeats.

H4895 for 30-06, and H110 for the carbine loads. I think what is now called Bullseye was in fact the powder used for mil-spec ball ammo in WWII.

There of course is a fundamental difference between today's reloader powder and that produced/used in bulk by govt. arsenals during the war, but the basic formula is the same, I think.

A friend from back when I lived in San Antonio had sent off to the State of Texas for the CHL package, as that was how it was done when CHL first rolled out here in the mid '90s.

He went to the class and qualified, but never did send the completed package and fee back to the State for her license.

Late last year, he drove to Galveston to vacation, and made a visit to Casa de Sunko, as well. En route, he busted a stop sign, and got pulled over by the Galveston P.D.

They didn't make it a felony take-down, but they did approach his truck guardedly, with hands ON their sidearms, and asked him pointedly about his permit, if he was armed, if there was a gun in his truck, and were NOT nice about it.

He did have a legally owned and carried gun in the console, per Texas law. And, he followed ALL the right advice about "how not to get yo' ass kicked by the Po Leesse", and actually was let go with but a warning.

Cops told him his plate spit out that he was a CHL holder.

Remember, he'd never completed the cycle to GET the damned permit. Just having sent off for that package over twenty years ago, was enough to trip the trigger. (how's THAT for a gub thread metaphore!)

RBC, If I had to go with just one powder (I shudder at the thought) it would be Unique. Within limits it can be used in almost any cartridge. Not good for high power rifle or full house magnum handgun loads but with cast bullets and moderate velocity it will keep you shooting.

One of the reasons I prefer revolvers, bolt action rifles and single shots is the latitude they allow with ammo and reloads.

At some point in the mid-'60s at the Camp Perry Matches he took it to one of the 'smiths who fitted a slide with adjustable "TRIANGLE" sights and a NM bushing. That bushing is ridiculously tight. Had trigger work done later. 221 ...I thiiiiink the .45ACP velocity for ball ammo was about 835fps. I try not to get anywhere near that with the Colt. When manufactured they lightened the slide by removing a bunch of metal inside and apparently it's possible to crack the slides with too hot a load. For that gun I think I'm loading around 750fps with W231.

1. Research Wolff Springs, and go up on the poundage of your recoil spring....I'm thinking a 4 lb. to 6 lb. stronger spring.

2. Get a JWB's original design firing pin stop. It's much more squared on the bottom. The Government Model's stop is fully rounded, to make the slide easier to hand-cycle. JWB's original design slows the slide's initial rearward motion, and lowers the overall slide velocity as a result.

Then your 835 fps ammo will work perfectly, as designed, without cracking your slide.

227 It's been a few weeks. Guns sent back to MFG, guns back from MFG.

The PPQ 45 didn't take the Insights class by storm. Several failures to eject. Not happy. Sent the gun into Walther, after a lot of back and forth from them...they didn't want to take it in...and they were unable to find anything wrong with the gun.

Joy.

Either the problem was with the magazines or 600 rounds of ball ammo would make it puke about 50 fifty rounds or so. And the failure to eject was not something I could tap-rack-bang my way out of. I have to strip the magazine, work the slide a few times and then re-insert.

So I'm back to carrying my Glock 21 again.
Ah well.

I love them, but I love all kinds of everything. Start with a Springfield or Ruger and you shouldn't spend much more than $500 or so, and you won't lose too much if you decide you don't like it. Or still like it but just keep it in the safe for other things you like a bit more.

Unless you mean laying the money down for a Colt, and I'd still start with the cheaper option unless you're viewing it as an investment.

If you love the 1911 and you're willing to put some time in with it...eh, go for it. It beats a revolver.

But it's not as good as modern pistols, in capacity and reliability. 1911's take a lot of 'fiddling', especially with their magazines. I'd suggest a M&P or a XD 45 or a Glock 21 over a 1911. Heck even a CZ 97, a SIG or even an old Ruger P90.

238 Jay - good idea.

Better idea - got to that big range in Poway, or the new-ish one at Gunther's up in Carlsbad, or IronSights in Oceanside, and rent a few handguns. Find what you like.

Even better idea - don't wait, buy one (what you like) soon. While some handguns are not available in CA, most still are, new, from dealers. And ....

EVEN better idea - haunt the private sales section of CalGuns, where you will find better prices than new for guns that are essentially new (most guns don't age much if properly used/cared for), AND "off-roster" guns that you can't buy new, from dealers (yeah, that makes exactly as much sense as you think it does).

You might need that thing in a month. Probably not, but "be prepared". Don't wait.

Apparently, our lovely, relatively new covered range was never approved via building permit through the town, and the Town found out about it nearly two years later.

Doesn't look good for the club as the Town appears to have an ax to grind. Said retarded president is so surprised that a simple paperwork error is causing such a problem.

Yeah, that's it. A paperwork problem. Not that the Town was looking for any excuse at all to shut down any firing on the range. Nope. A 'paperwork' problem. We're into the second month of this crap, formal notices posted at the gate that we can't shoot until everything is resolved.

256 Jay, I'd differ with Mark slightly on the 1911. Many don't require much fiddling, and if they do, only need to be fiddled with once by a competent mechanic. Magazines can be an issue, but not hard to find a kind that work reliably. Just my experience.

And my reason for saying get thee to a local range that rents, and shoot, is that you can see what a Sig220 is like, or an XD-45, and try the 1911 again (all 45ACP).

One point made by another commenter above that is key, which I stress to prospective first-time gun buyers: most quality firearms both retain their value and are easy to sell, if you should want to, later. It's not a "drive off the lot and lose 1/3 of your car's value" situation, with quality guns.

*how. ev. urrrrrr*

The Glock is now indisputably proven to be the most dependable, most reliable, and professionally relied UPON handgun in the world today.

I don't like how a Glock (doesn't) fit in my hand. I don't care for a Glock factory trigger. I hate the cheap-ass, horridly imprecise sights that the factory fits atop the Glock's slide.

But it can't be argued that a Glock is pretty much like a fork. Simple, and works every time it's properly employed.

1911s on the other hand, run the gamut from super-UN-reliable buckets of parts flying in loose formation, to ultra-accurate, high-precision masterpieces that should never be "carry" guns, due to being so tightly fitted as to introduce their own various UN-reliabilities.

Some 1911s are pure Hangar Queens (looking at you, Kimber, of 10 years back or so)

If you're going to carry a 1911.... I'd recommend at least two professional gun-FIGHTING 1911 classes, at least two THOUSAND rounds expended in said training, new Recoil Springs every two thousand rounds, and stick with the 1911 until it's SO very damn second nature to you, that shooting a 1911 and shooting it well, is more instinctive that even wiping your own ass.

Here's the payoff though. You get this good with your 1911....and you're gonna be pretty DAMN good with every other pistol, other than a double action revolver.

You master the double action revolver though, and THEN every other handgun is a piece of cake.

Which is why I compete in the Stock Service Revolver Class, to the exclusion of all others. I want to be accurate, and have to assume that I *must* connect, with each and every shot.

Only six on board before a reload.... does tend to focus one's efforts towards "Perfection".

Outdoor range where I RO has just about spent all its money, and reserves that were building for major capital improvements, to buy all the real estate in the surrounding area (three different properties came up for sale).

This is a rural area, but not unpopulated. The few locals are friendly to the range, for the most part, but the board is taking no chances. BLM land on several sides, so that's fine, and looks like there's almost a complete "cordon" of land surrounding the club now. It's CA, so - no chances being taken.

Best thing is the general use permit allows shooting up til 10PM. Military uses that a fair amount, some day going to host a twi-night BBQ and low-light shootin' party.

I just got one in .45ACP, and I agree about the trigger. The reset is amazing!

My only complaint is that it is so light that the recoil is quite different than my 1911.

Yup. I'm damn accurate with the PPQ, in 45 or 9mm. The gun is like magic, accuracy-wise.

I found I couldn't 'stage' the trigger during the class though. It was like solid wall and then 'bang' with only slightly more force. May try to do some more with with that in my next range session (and I need to nail down the cause of the FTE)

280 I can't believe you didn't link to The Holy Gospel of John (Moses Browning) as translated by Father Frog. (http://www.frfrogspad.com/jmb.htm)

1 In the
beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good.
And behold the Lord said, "Thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's
design for it is good and it workith. For
John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the
Lord, gave him upon the mountain."
2 "And shouldst
thou muck with it,and hang
all manner of foul implements upon it, and profane its internal parts, thou
shalt surely have malfunctions, and in the midst of battle thou shalt surely
come to harm."
3 And as the
ages passed men in their ignorance and arrogance didst forget the word of the
Lord and began to profane the 1911. The
tribe of the gamesman did place recoil spring guides and extended slide releases
upon the 1911 and their metal smiths didst tighten the tolerances and alter
parts to their liking, their clearness of mind being clouded by lust.
4 Their artisans
did hang all manner of foul implements upon the 1911 and did so alter it that it
became impractical to purchase. For
lo, the artisans didst charge a great tax upon the purchasers of the 1911 so
that the lowly field worker could not afford one. And the profaning of the
internal parts didst render it unworkable when the dust of the land fell upon
it, and these profaners didst try and fit more rounds of ammunition into the magazines than the
holy number of seven, appointed for the .45.
5 And lo, they didst
install adjustable sights, which are an abomination unto the Lord.
For they doth break and lose their zero when thou dost need true aim.
And those who have done so will be slain in great numbers by their
enemies in the great battle. a
6 And it came to
pass that the Lord didst see the abomination wrought by man and didst cause, as
he had warned, fearful malfunctions to come upon the abominations and upon the
artisans who thought they could do no wrong.
7 Seeing the
malfunctions and the confusion of men, the lord of the underworld did see an
opportunity to further ensnare man and didst bring forth pistols made of
plastic, whose form was such that they looked and felt like a brick, yet the
eyes of man being clouded, they were consumed by the plastic pistol and did buy
vast quantities of them.
8 And being a
deceitful spirit, the lord of the underworld did make these plastic pistols,
filled with tiny springs and parts that were easily lostc,
and they were unmenable to the artisans of earth so they were unable to muck much with the
design, and lo these pistols did appear to function.
9 And the
evil one also brought forth pistols in which the trigger didst both cock and
fire them and which require a "dingus" to make them appear safe.
10 But man
being stupid did not understand these new pistols and didst proceed to shoot
themselves with the plastic pistol and with the trigger cocking pistols for lo their manual of arms required great
intelligence which man had long since forsaken.
Yet man continue to gloat over these new pistols blaming evil forces for
the negligent discharges which they themselves had committed.
11 And when man had
been totally ensnared with the plastic pistol, the lord of the underworld didst
cause a plague of the terrible Ka-Boom to descend upon man and the plastic
pistols delivered their retribution upon men.
And there was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth in the land.
12 Then seeing that
the eyes of man were slowly being opened and that man was truly sorrowful for
his sinful misdeeds, the Lord did send his messengers in the form of artisans
who did hear and obey the teachings of the prophet and who didst restore the
profaned 1911s to their proper configuration, and lo, to the amazement of men
they didst begin to work as the Lord had intended.
13 And the men of
the land didst drive out the charlatans and profaners from the land, and there
was joy and peace in the land, except for the evil sprits which tried
occasionally to prey on the men and women of the land and who were sent to the
place of eternal damnation b by the followers of John.

283 Rhomboid,

Yeah, we're in a rural but not unpopulated area too, but in NH. Seems like many of the towns are being infiltrated by MA residents who like the low/no taxes and then are bent on getting rid of the icky guns. Having people running our club that are naive or idiotic as to the Town's intentions is beyond irritating.

As I've been telling friends who live in other states, we're purple here, but we're rapidly moving towards blue.

It is disheartening, especially since we spent a lot to uproot the family specifically to move to a 2nd amendment friendly state. (from CT to NH)

284 214 ... " JTB - though it's only a contingency thing given the abundance nowadays, my universal powder is ..... well, Universal. It's extremely versatile in the calibers I load, can do all of the handgun ones, anyway."

Can't argue with Universal for handgun ammo although I think Unique has more latitude. I've only used Universal in shotguns.

There is a good amount of info on the internet, like the Cast Boolits forum, for Unique or Red Dot in light to moderate cast bullet rifle ammo, especially for bolt actions and lever guns. I think I mentioned last week a friend asked me to work up a cast bullet load for her 30-30. For medical reasons she can't take much recoil, even with a pad. But I can give her a 100 to 150 yard load that will feel like a popgun.

For laughs, I have used a 10 grain Unique load behind a 405 grain bullet in a 45-70. At 200 yards, you almost have time to pull the fired case and load the next round. It rang the steel gong but I would never hunt with it.

And BTW, I think there's a decent case that NH was stolen from Trump in 2016. Don't know if a thorough examination was ever done, but the Hildabeast's "winning" margin was substantially less than the # of same-day voter registrations, and a follow-up on those registrations showed initial hallmarks of fraud (voters did not subsequently get any NH state documents, like driver's licenses, etc.). Quite an interesting, specific case of potential voter fraud that, due to the numbers, might be resolvable with a high level of confidence.

300 Ignoramus, I don't see it as "greedy".

It's both substance, and principle.

Substance: several large population states infringe their residents' 2A rights in indefensible ways - that is, almost any way, since .......

Principle: if rule of law is ever to be restored, the very first element must be "words mean what they say".

The "levels of scrutiny" crap is just audacious (and not very artful) lawlessness, in which the courts have substituted their own confected "system" for common sense, and the meaning of words. What's worse, almost all the objectionable gun laws fail even *those* artificial illegitimate standards.

I'm pretty sure SAF and NRA et al try to think strategically here. Seems just two big SCOTUS cases - on concealed carry/right to bear, and guns in common use standards - could wash away a large % of the worst laws nation-wide, in two swoops. Here's to hoping.

But negating/amending the constitution with "levels of scrutiny" and other, again, artless and sophomoric horseshit is the essence of lawlessness. It's one of the most insidious forms of lawlessness - in that it proceeds mostly without notice, incrementally, but renders all laws and the constitution just arbitrary tools in the hands of men.

329 How do nations produce endless quantities of high explosive? What do you have to dig out of the ground? Is it rare? I don't understand how large scale war works.
Posted by: Bandersnatch at September 02, 2018 08:11 PM (fuK7c)

High explosives, and explosives in general, are organic compounds that serve as fuels, with oxgen chemically attached in such a way that fuel and oxidizer are contained in the same material - the explosive burns the fuel with internally-contained oxygen - no air is needed.

Attaching the oxygen to the fuel molecules generally requires nitric acid and sulfuric acid, which are industrial comodity chemicals. These are mixed together and used to treat organic "fuel" compounds to introduce nitro, nitrate, or nitramine groups - the nitrogen atoms hold the oxygen in place. The process is called nitration.

Sulfuric acid is made by mining sulfur out of the ground, burning it with air over a catalyst to make sulfur trioxide, and combining that with water to make the acid. There are large deposits of sulfur in Sicily, the US Gulf Coast area, and elsewhere. Sulfur can also be recovered from hydrogen sulfide gas that removed when purifying natural gas.

Nitric acid can be made by heating a nitrate salt mined from the ground (sodium nitrate for example, big deposits in Chile) in sulfuric acid and distilling off the nitric acid. It can also be made by catalytic burning of ammonia with air to make nitric oxide, wich is combined with oxygen from the air and water to make nitric acid (synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen anb hydrogen was developed in Germany in WW1 when their supplies of Chile saltpeter were cut off). Lastly an electric arc in air can be used to make nitric oxide, which is then combined with oxygen and air as above.

The fuel part for high explosives can be someting like phenol or toluene (make picric acid and TNT respectively), originally found in tar distilled out of coal. Toluene is also found in petroleum. There are other organic compounds of course, but I won't get into that.

Fuel molecules for smokeless propellant are usually from natural sources. (There was WW2 German military smokeless that actually had some TNT in it.) Double-base powder has nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose, single-base powder just nitrocellulose. Glycerine is a byproduct from heating fat with sodium hydroxide to make soap. Cellulose is either cotton or wood pulp.

All the chemicals used to make explosives have other industrial uses.

331 Heads up......Sept 4th is the very first day the forms to get a 'gummit" surplus Colt 1911 from CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) can be post marked to get into the lottery to purchase one. They will take applications through Oct 4th. They only have 8 or 10,000 they can sell per year. I got my form all filled out and waiting.

I also filled out another form to get some more M-1 garands. I got a Springfield a few years back when they only had H&R's and Springfields (luck of the draw). I ordered some IHC (International Harvesters) this time, another luck of the draw hoping I get a H&R this time and saw where they had Winchesters but sold out. I really need to check that website out more often.

I guess these Garands must be from those Philippines returns that the SCOAMF wanted to grind up rather than sell to us icky bitter clingers. Just one more of the myriad reasons I ask God to bless President Trump.

333 My first pistol was Rem's 1911 R1. No Gold Cup, but not bad, either. I also bought a reloading press, dies, bullets, and powder BUT due to fears Obama was going to lower the ban hammer, there wasn't much to pick from to reload with. I bought a can of Clays and used Lee's dipper. Too weak! Now its easier to find .45 acp and my time is more valuable, so no more reloading, though i kept all the gear, just in case!

334 "Millions were produced under military contract before being replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1985.."

Not quite. I was in the army between 87-92 and carried a M1911 on my hip in Korea, Europe and SWA as it took years to fully implement across all units. I did hear of some grumbles about the M9 and rumors that some .45s were reissued, but who knows.

335 On nitrogen; German chemist Haber invented Haber-Bosch process to extract nitrogen from air circa 1914. Nitrogen and its derivatives are key to explosives. Also key to fertilizers. Without Haber Bosch world could not feed its expanded population.

336 The license plates in TX are associated with LTCs? Not in my experience.

You want to be stopped by cops in TX? Drive in the Panhandle. In my previous 23 years of driving I had not been stopped by DPS a single time. Since moving here DPS has stopped me three times. As have two other departments...and each and every time, all post-LTC era (for me), the cops ONLY asked about firearms AFTER I showed them my LTC.

None issued me a ticket...DPS issued warnings (they HAVE to issue something now when they pull you over).

337 As for MD and NJ...police states, both. I suspect that if I were to pull over on the Beltway on the MD side, grabbed a rock, and threw it in any direction, I'd hit five MD state troopers. NJ is just as bad.
