Clay Travis On ESPN's Turn to the Militant Left: When Their Business Model Began Failing, They Sought Salvation In Appealing to the Buzzfeed/Jezebel Online SJW Mafia

I will add some claims made by Diversity & Comics, explaining how and why Marvel Comics decided to set its glide-path towards bankruptcy by pursuing a "phantom audience" of women, soibois, and other people who simply do not read American superhero comics and never will, no matter how many characters you gender-swap or make gay.

He notes that in the old days, people communicated about these interests on message boards. But leftwingers began seeking out moderator positions on these boards, and then would only permit their leftwing friends to become moderators.

Once they were in control of moderation, they began purging every single non-leftwing non-SJW commenter from their sites. Or at least the ones who didn't learn to be Silent. The ones who had learned to be Silent and accepted the leash of their leftist masters, well, they could stay. As long as they stayed Silent.

Now, why does such a minor thing as comic book message board moderation matters? Well, because at the same time, Social Justice Warriors within the company -- hired to appease Social Justice Warrior agitators at Buzzfeed, Jezebel, the Mary Sue, etc. -- began agitating to take the company full SJW.

When Marvel started experiencing poor sales, the Social Justice Warriors claimed that turning white characters black, male characters female, and straight characters gay, while filling every story with loads of clumsy, blunt leftwing political messaging, would attract a New, Better, Woker audience and bring sales to new heights.

Now, back to that purge-of-non-SJWs-from-fan-message-boards: When Marvel Comics now looks for evidence about this theory, they naturally look to fan message boards for either support or refutation of the theory.

And what do they find there?

Well, now that the only people permitted to comment there at all are all SJWs, they find that the theory seems to have a lot of support behind it. Why look -- on all these comic book message boards, everyone's just ga-ga for more leftwing politics in superhero comic books!

The higher-ups at Marvel Comics don't know the secret about why these message boards are all Full-On SJW, and the SJWs within the company don't share that information with them.

So-- Marvel Comics decides, hey, we looked at "the data," and this SJW Plan sure seems viable!

Spoiler alert: It was not in fact viable.

Marvel's (and DC's, too) sales keep falling, year by year, and more and more comic book shops keep shuttering, unable to sell the dreck that these onetime titans used to sell by the literal hundreds of thousands.

Now only a couple of books sell 100,000 reliably, and most "hit" books sell around 30,000.

Many sell 8,000 to 10,000 copies a month.

The line at which comic books used to be cancelled for low sales was around 60,000 in Jim Shooter's day.

Now, you're writing a "Hit Book" if you sell half that.

One wonders if something similar happened at ESPN's various chatrooms, with hardcore SJWs driving out non-SJWs. Making it appear as if Social Justice Warrioring was the way of the future for ESPN.

Of course, sometimes they can't drive out dissenting voices, so they simply begin brigading campaigns (brigading campaigns are organized efforts to simply have many people keep saying the same thing over and over, to falsely simulate an "organic" expression of a widespread idea) to deem everyone who disagrees with them "alt-right Nazis."

So, even when a company does see some dissenting voices, there are dozens of people (running maybe hundreds of accounts) calling these people "alt-right Nazis," and who's gonna listen to an alt-right Nazi? Once you subtract out all the alt-right Nazis, it appears, once again, as if by some coordinated astroturfed magic, that once again nearly 100% of the people who count agree that Social Justice Warriorism is the golden path for success for every ailing corporation.

Meanwhile, our TruCon Betters keep telling us we have nothing to fear from the coordinated mass-purging of conservative voices from every electronic street corner.

By the Way: An important part of Hitler's control over German thought was the Nazi Party's takeover of all social clubs people belonged to, so they would never, ever have respite from Nazi-approved propaganda and Nazi-appointed Thought Minders.

These things may seem silly in isolation, but in combination, this is how you radically transform a country.

It took a while, and started back in the early '00s, but by the time Gamergate started it was an absolute snakepit. You can get banned for the most meagre infractions (such as mentioning various things they abhor in even a neutral light). It's one of the things that drove me from the hobby.

I think the idea that it's hard to find water comes from the example of Mars, where people figure it must have had water, but has lost most of it due to not having much of an atmosphere.

Planets hold vaporous molecules based largely on their mass. Earth's mass is too small to hold tiny atoms like helium or molecular hydrogen, but it holds nitrogen, oxygen water vapor, etc.

Very large planets would hold easily hold water, and the only real question (I think) is what form it's in, liquid or (as in Jupiter's case) ice.

78 It's pretty amazing. Marvel had some heavy-SJW comics that didn't sell at all, so they finally cancelled them. Then, in response to a whole bunch of message board comments, they said "I guess these were popular" and un-cancelled them.

As the Diversity and Comics guy noted, Iceman has been a character for decades, and we have followed him and read his thought bubbles on the printed page. He was a womanizer. But then very recently, ver suddenly: he realized he was gay. Not just bisexual, oh no, full-on gay. And his parents reacted as if they were sterotyped 50's parents, and he not only decided to be gay but he changed his behavior and started acting like an 80's stereotype gay man. And none of the drama was dramatic, and nothing was fun or fresh or interesting. But the SJW message boards were all in favor of it.

This train wreck of a comic is being brought back, with the person who caused the ruin also being brought back. And the message boards approve.

But will message board approval translate into sales? Spoiler: no. SJW snowflakes who live with their parents have little disposable income and don't seem to spend it on comics, even SJW comics. They approve on message boards but that doesn't translate into sales. Dumping the traditional customers in favor of SJWs is a losing tactic.

The Diversity and Comics guy also thinks the SJWs at Marvel are terrified now, because IndieGoGo projects for non-SJW comics are blowing up and making huge money. With no advertising budget, with no big company like Marvel behind them, they are selling strongly. In the best-case scenario, Marvel (or their Disney corporate overlords) will wake up and say "hey, maybe going back to non-SJW comics is the way to make money." And purge the SJWs and start hiring people who actually love comics and have a track record of making comics the fans like to buy. And then we all win (except the SJWs).

I don't hate the SJWs... they should be free to go to some indie publisher and make their SJW comics. I just want them kicked out from Marvel.

Cost. $4.99-$5.99 for a book that is one-sixth of a complete story, so $30-$36 for the whole six-issue or trade.

Location. You can't GET comics at the toy stores, spinner racks at paper stores, or at the grocery stores. Gone are the "Look, Kids! Comics!" racks. To get them you either go to a specialty comics store, a Newbury Comics, or other place you need to know to look for.

Decompression. Add to the cover price the fact that most modern books read in about five minutes, and it isn't really decent entertainment for the dollar. Writing for the trade isn't helping, nor is the death of "done in one" books that used to exist.

There are other reasons, the constant rebooting among them, but I think cost, location, and the WAY so many books are written don't help at all.

But yes, SJWs are killing comics as best they can.

Because it's a microcosm of the culture. At the beginning, a lot of people (including me) asked, "why do video games/gamers matter?" We all learned. "Gamergate" was critically important in the modern history of western culture, and it shows that other "marginal" things could be extremely important, too.

Gamergate was the first time that a confederated (not allied) group of individuals went up against the SJW machine. They won. It was important. When Marvel fails, or ESJWPN, or whoever else, it will again prove the point that we don't need to agree with each other - we just need to disagree with *them* and they can be defeated.

We normals can work our mutual differences at the ballot box and in the legislatures. The SJWs need to be deleted from our culture and even the loosest confederation is capable of that.

Remember comic books were just little fringe throwaways for kids that never made any money for a long time - the industry got lucky with the rise of a writing genius like Jack Kirby and a marketing genius like Stan Lee. But Kirby is gone, Lee is 95 years old, and accountants who understand nothing are attempting to milk the biz for cash now, and they've had great success milking Kirby and Lee's cash cows with the movies.

But that only goes so far. It was a fun ride, at times, but it's over. What we're seeing are the death rows. In the future I suspect some comics may survive as art projects for bored millionaires, but that's about it. There's no reason for comic book stores to exist anymore, the entire idea is past its sell-by date. In 10 years, finding a comic book store will be about like trying to find a Blockbuster video rental store today.

This won't last for much longer. The goal has nothing to do with "gay" storytelling as such. It has to do with deviancy. Homosexuality used to be deviant, so they started shoving it into cultural content. It worked. It isn't deviant anymore. So while gay-characters-that-don't-need-to-be will still be a thing, their density will go down. Look at what deviancy the Left is trying to mainstream, and you'll find it showing up with greater momentum in your programming.

But yeah, why would there then not be water in some form, on other planets? But the "rivers" could be made by other liquids, or other glaciers.

The Bible story of the great flood, I'm kinda thinkin that could be read as if the water came from "space". The time line may be off by a couple billion years, but still interesting if that concept was introduced, and is accurate according to current science.

It's a lot closer than that, even looking at it scientifically. During the last ice age, sea levels were 400 feet lower than they are today. Between 11,000 bc and about 7000 bc, sea levels rose by 350 feet (and another 50 feet more slowly between 7000 bc and today) When you consider that because of easy food and moderate temperature, the vast majority of humanity would have lived relatively close to the oceans (almost certainly including civilizations we know nothing about) it's not hard to understand why humans everywhere would remember the stories of everything they knew being wiped out by massive floods from the sea.

At one point a while back the entire floor of the Mediterranean was gentle rolling grasslands dotted with small lakes. Then the Atlantic rose high enough to bust through the ridge on the western end, leaving the Pillars of Hercules (one being the Rock of Gibralter) as the remaining evidence of the rock wall that had once held back the sea.

Well ... the melt wasn't totally homogeneous, but even so, localized flooding has more to do with the local topography. Some areas might have experienced mild, constant rises in water levels. Others, which had natural barriers, might have experienced devastating floods as those barriers finally gave way catastrophically.

I saw a neat program about a guy who was looking for the location of the Garden of Eden. He made a decent case that it was a bit offshore, into what is now the Persian Gulf but that would have been dry land back then. He claims to have found dry river beds from satellite photos that correlate with the rivers named in the Bible that met at the Garden, but two of which no longer exist. Interesting program.

Vox Day started a comic book publishing house, and it looks like there's a fair amount of interest in the product. But I have a feeling comic store owners will be hounded out of business if they dare to carry it. These poor people are between a rock and a hard place - their product has been tailored to the tastes of people who don't buy it, and those same people will attack them (sometimes physically) if they try to reach a broader market.

That was the last point at which individual issues would sell over a million copies with any consistency. There was a backlash after the pop of that speculative bubble ( million unit issues do not become rare collector's items ). There was a spectacular crash in 1993 and 1994 if I remember correctly. After that video games and the internet became more and more successful and interesting, and the mass youth market for comic books never recovered. Out of curiosity I checked out the individual issue numbers for July 2018, and I was honestly surprised by how high they were. The top sellers still only make it over 100K, but this is actually much better than the late 1990s or the oughts. It turns out that all these comic book movies have been have been creating some spillover.

But they're never going to compete with video games or snapchat for the youthful eyeballs the way they used to. I agree that Marvel's turn towards SJW representation was way too large, and they are currently in the process of over-correcting. It was a desperate attempt to snag some relevance with younger readers. I'm now a middle aged man, but in most comic books shops, and in most of the monthly market for comic books I'm a youngster. Marvel's SJW turn did offend the majority of their old, white, male market. They tried something new and it failed. This guy's attempt to use this recent failed attempt at a rebrand to explain a decades long trend is more than a bit silly.

Also, it wasn't even necessarily a failure. The folks who buy individual comic books every month are old white guys, but in what I think is a larger market for collected editions, SJW stuff does very well. Here's Amazon's current best sellers. I would say at least 6 out of 10 of those has some heavy SJW component.

The only "new" thing here is that someone pointed the Lidar at the jungle to see what's underneath the canopy. Also the Mayans were in central America, not the Amazon. I think what they must have done was point the Lidar at the jungles in Guatemala and southern Mexico.

No they're not. They need a whole lot more correcting before they're aligned with their biggest potential customer base.

This is a logical fallacy that assumes the market is fixed in size, but it's not. People won't buy comics if their choices span the range of "objectionable" and "low quality". Seriously, Marvel hired someone who's never written for the industry to write Riri Williams because she looks like the character.

I agree the industry will probably never return to its heyday because of the internet and video games. But Japanese manga sales are chalking up YoY growth at the same time Marvel and DC are experiencing 10% YoY declines. There's definitely a quality problem here.

Nope. Why do I know? Because I was part of the founding fathers of the first "webcrawler" technology and we sold that technology to OlgilvyOne Worldwide. Other "branders" soon followed and sold to other big name marketers.
The technology was crude, sure, developed out of years of "moderating" old fan websites like "The L Word" from Showtime and others places. But the idea was simple - to comb the web everywhere for comments related to the client's brand and then insert "influencers" as moderators to steer people to a narrative.

507 Golfman - the idea wasn't to influence Morons - it was to strip away negative brand comments so "fence sitters" were influenced to feel positive toward a brand or, perhaps, an ideology.

We sorted by repeat responses on "key" words. Today that might be "cuck" or "SWJ" and "NeverTrumper" and such. These commenters were then targeted for banning or shunning, if possible, usually by "ghost" moderators or influencers. The idea originally was to steer "positive" comments toward the brand. That has changed to SWJ and Prog ideology fairly recently, perhaps the last five years.
Its a depressing path I no longer tread.

Marvel movies are just about Disney's biggest moneymakers right now, and a large part of the reason for that is the great casting. But those actors can't keep playing the same roles forever. Robert Downey, Jr., for example, is 53 years old, a bit long in the tooth for an action star by most standards.

Eventually, these actors will have to be replaced. And who's gonna be able to take Downey's place in the role of Tony Stark? Who's gonna be as beloved by the fans? If past superhero movie reboots are any indication, nobody; that's who.

So, rather than try to replace Downey, they take it a step further and replace Tony Stark with someone completely different, a young black girl named Riri. Now when they have to replace Downey in the movies, they don't have to find someone else who can fill his shoes; they can just bring in this new character instead. Without that daunting history for her to try to live up to, audiences might be more accepting of this all-new Iron Man.

I really think there's something to this theory. It makes a lot of sense!

I'm not saying it's a great plan, mind you; I still think the scab heroes suck, and I hope this bright idea fails spectacularly.

Marvel Comics has to be losing money right now. Disney probably accepts this, since the movies more than make up for it. But they're eroding the support structures of the comics industry while they're at it, and the industry edges closer to total collapse with every passing day. Especially on the retail side, and once enough stores shut down, Diamond Distributors will no longer be a viable company. What'll happen to those Marvel properties when there's nowhere left to buy their increasingly terrible comics?
