Saturday Evening Movie Thread [Guest Blogger: Moviegique]

We are going to try to expand the topics a bit for this time slot, so it is entirely possible that you will see fishing, Yoko Ono, macramé, Mechanical Engineering 228: Shelf Design, hacky-sack, the psycho-sexual politics of veganism, and other interesting topics. Or not.

It was an inauspicious start to "Incredibles 2" where some people who made the film (actors, in this case) come out before the movie to tell you how much you're going to like the movie that you paid for and are waiting to see. It feels positively needy. But "Coco" turned out okay,

The next thing that hits you—hard—is that they're all 15 years older. I don't know if Holly Hunter smokes, but her voice has gone from a charming whiskey-soaked Southern twang to...your grandmother. Craig T. Nelson is no spring chicken either. Writer/director Brad Bird's Edna Mode is fine, but she was an old lady all along. And while this may not bug most people, I sorely felt the absence of the late Bud Luckey (who plays agent Rick Dickey, the guy in charge in keeping Mr. Incredible employed, and the narrator of the charming "Boundin'" short that played before the first "Incredibles").

"Old"

movie8-18-1.jpg

The political correctness of the film is the next bump on this ride. I would argue that the first movie, while a philosophical muddle, was at least not overly SJW. To elaborate it helps to get a light summary of the story:

We begin at the exact end of the previous movie with the Underminer running amok and our newly united super family ready to face him together! Except this is a new movie and we need a new conflict, so let's pretend nothing was resolved by the last movie—the number one way sequels screw up their classic origins—and let's use the same conflict again, to wit, the Parrs are at each others' throats and superheroes are still illegal. The Incredibles defeat the Underminer, but heroism backfires due to collateral damage.

The Parrs are broke because the government can't get them jobs any more.
A reprieve comes in the form of a Jobs/Wosniak-style brother-sister team who assure the Parrs that if they wear body cams people can see what more than just the damage. They can use this to sway public opinion and get supers de-criminalized. Because Mr. Incredible tends toward the more destructive, Elastigirl will be the pilot, and her target is the mind-controlling Screenslaver. Bob will stay home and take care of Jack-Jack.

The "Mr. Mom" bit was reasonably fresh when Michael Keaton did it in 1983, and it doesn't have to be the case that this kind of storyline is SJW, but the Bob Parr of this movie is more than just a middle-aged man looking to relive his glory days: He's borderline psychotic, usually on the verge of a murderous rage. When his wife tells his how well the crime-fighting is going, he's so riddled with envy, his heroism is that he is actually able to congratulate her.

Mr. Incredible in one of his happier moments.

movie8-18-2.jpg

He's completely unable to do the house-husband thing at first. About the time I was starting to ready to check out completely, he has a good moment and I thought, "OK, at least he's not a complete boob." Except that the next scene, he's back to being utterly overwhelmed. It doesn't help that Elastigirl's feistiness gets knocked into 12th gear here.
She's utterly unsympathetic to Bob, with only a token nod toward missing the biggest moments of her baby's life.

Once you notice one of these things, they start to pile up fast. In the brother-sister team, for example, it's the sister who's the world-wise Wozniak (technical wizard), and the brother who's the bubble-headed Jobs. The sensible Violet is victimized by her father's blundering attempts to help while Dash is basically random uncontrolled impulsive destructiveness.

Then there's the second string heroes. In the first movie there's a quick run-through of all the (murdered) super-heroes? You probably didn't think anything of it, but all those characters were what you might call "conventionally attractive" and even "rather idealized". In this movie, all of the heroes (apart from the Parrs and Frozone) are what Diversity & Comics would call alt-lifestyle-freakazoids, except for the one white male who's old and has irritable bowel syndrome for his power. The most prominent wannabe hero even sports the classic "mentally disturbed" hairstyle: blue and shaved on one side.

They look like a latex fetish convention.

Who WOULDN'T wanna look like these guys?

movie8-18-3.jpg

Bird, whom I have loved since his early days on the "Simpsons" and "The Critic" was wrong to bristle at the Twitter dad who said his kid had trouble sitting still during the talky parts. There are two lengthy, pointless speeches that I think a more engaged John Lasseter would've gently guided Bird away from. At 2:05, it's too long for woke, girl-power speeches which literally do nothing to advance the plot.

All this I could actually overlook, but the story is as rote as they come. The villain is supposed to be a surprise, but it's tipped very early on. Elastigirl misses so many obvious cues as to what's going on—mind control is the hoariest of superhero clichés—she ends up looking dumb. This is not coincidental.

Everybody looks fine in here!
movie8-18-4.jpg

I've often said that critics have a gut reaction to a film, like everyone else, and then invent "reasons" to "explain" that feeling, much like people do with politics. With SJW-based fiction (not exclusively, but especially), we see artists desiring to create specific outcomes played out by certain demographics, and retrofitting stories completely to make those things happen—however little sense it ends up making.

This happens big and small throughout "The Incredibles 2", as when Violet's character arc shows her accepting the possibility that a teenage girl might occasionally, maybe, sometimes when there's no other option, be suited to babysitting.

The action is competent, the final set piece is solid, and there are a few good gags, but we learn nothing new about our heroes. The art is good, of course, and Michael Giacchino's score is great but we didn't hate it, but we couldn't muster more than a "meh".

But we were just marking time before the real feature: A Chinese thriller about the no-holds-barred world of underground rock-scissors-paper.

As I've mentioned ad nauseum, I went to Vienna, Prague and Budapest recently. The town square of Prague has an enormous number of street performers and some are quite good. I was taking pictures of the wife in front of a guy dressed as Alladin's genie, but carefully balanced on a hidden steel structure, so it looked like he was coming out of a lamp. Anyway, in the background, I noticed two performers in what were clearly Mickey and Minnie Mouse ripoffs, but both were just a litttttttle bit off - enough to avoid a lawsuit. They looked like Mickey and Minnie were a pimp and whore, or possibly meth-heads.

I did not feel sorry for Disney in the slightest.

There is a godawful WWII movie called Escape From Athena from 1979. In it is a scene where Elliot Gould is walking through a POW camp and leaning against a barrack is William Holden. Gould does a double take and says, "You're still here?" Holden just puffs away on his cigar. Nice cameo in a very silly movie.

32 Last week I caught a special 20th anniversary showing of "The Big Lebowski" at my local googelplex. It improves with each viewing. I had a new appreciation for how well John Goodman portrayed the bilious Walter Sobchek (supposedly based on director John Milius), and how thoroughly he trounced the Nihilists outside the bowling alley.

I hadn't seen the film in ages and while I remembered plenty of scenes, I had forgotten the story as a whole and the convoluted plot was a pleasure to rediscover.

Fuck it, let's bowl.

It's moviegique's content.

Now, Incredibles 2 is worse than this movie review suggests.

Let me go back to Incredibles one. It was about something. It was about middle-aged people mourning the loss of our youthful glory.

It was also a good enough cartoon movie that our kids didn't have to notice that. (Unless we were mean and told them that the movie was made for us).

We used to be cool, we used to feel invincible, now we're stuck at this stupid desk and we don't even know why.

Incredibles 2 has chase scenes. That's about it. I don't even mind the SJW stuff, whatevs. The Mr. Mom thing could have worked it just didn't.

And I hate Jack-Jack and his infinite powers. You sort of have a gag there where we didn't think Jack-Jack had powers, but then he has all of them?

Bullshit. Utter bullshit.

Same with Mission Impossible : Fallout

And The Equalizer II. Anything to escape from current events.

"Lucy" (Scarlett Johansson), with Morgan Freeman making all the fantastical BS believable. (You have to want to believe.) And Amr Waked, the french detective that sees the impossible, and just adapts to it.

The movie is pure fantasy, but the images are interesting, the action is satisfying (evil is vanquished while good prevails). And who doesn't want to be a superhero? If only we could create the right synthetic drug that would unleash the power of the human brain.

Superheroes were still being held responsible for all the mayhem and destruction of the big showdown in the first movie. They needed a more media-friendly and less threatening public face of Superdom so that they could get back in the good graces of the populace, hence Mrs. Incredible.

143 I find it incredible that snots think their sneering at somebody else's entertainment does anything other than waste their time.

Hey, NASCAR isn't for me, but I don't insult those who find it fun.

As to the movie:

Money was tight when "The Incredibles" came out, so we waited until it finally arrived at a second-run theater. The day after we saw it, we bought the DVD, wiping out what we saved by waiting.

I don't think we'll buy this one. I enjoyed it -- and I didn't think putting Elastigirl in the spotlight kowtowed to SJWs, nor did I think Bob failed as a homemaker. He made errors, yes, but he learned and did better. The next generation of "supers" didn't have anybody whom I want to see in solo adventures, but it was good to see that the Parrs and Frozone aren't the only ones left.

No, we'll pass because the kids are grown, and the calvacade of super-hero flicks is making them all look the same. They (and we) are suffering from the overload. Who of us in fandom would have thought this would happen?

I'm never trying to change anyone's taste or ruin a movie for someone else who enjoyed it. I'm glad you did.

But by the end I was convinced that everything had been backward engineered by Disney's highly paid diversity experts.

156 For the most part the SJW aspect didn't bother me much. If you take the Incredibles world as presented then the character choices make sense. It's set in a 60's analogue. A man would of course have a rocky start as Mr. Mom, but he's shown coping with the role. It makes perfect sense for an attractive woman to be the face of the comeback. I would think that Superman would have a tough time taking a back seat to Lois Lane. I wished that they had found a larger role for Dash though. They extended Violet's powers why not his?

It's just that against the backdrop of psycotic SJW insanity permeating everything that it's hard to keep it from infecting everything we see. It's likely that you are right, but I found it possible to, for the most part, separate it from my enjoyment of the movie as it was.

Overall I thought it wasn't equal to the first, but it's tough equaling an origin story with its introducing a whole universe sensa wonder.

Yeah, Mr. Incredible gets his moment even WITH the "new math", which nearly saved that plotline for me.

At some point, on some level, aren't we supposed to admire Mr. Incredible? Violet? Dash? Where are they in all this? What happened to pulling together as family? Was that not the entire message of the first movie?

- Willard/Ben/Crispin Glover's Willard
- The In Like Flint series, from the 1960s

... I'm sure others here can think of other forgotten franchises.

maybe i should give it a go, then. in the brand new this week moviepass scheme of limiting us to selecting one of our three movies a month from a slate of six acceptable movies, it's the only one that is playing near me. it's not on the slate today, though; today none of the movies i'm allowed to select are actually playing in my neck of the lack of woods.
mrs. chronda signed me up for moviepass just before it started getting weird. she didn't ask me if i wanted it, just signed me up.
the most hilarious bit so far has involved mission impossible. after refusing to give me a ticket to mission impossible since it came out, they sent me spam about how much i wanted to go see the thing. and now it's not among the six movies they will let me pick from for the next week or so (for however long they've published the list).

234 @204 junior, true, in most of the Bond flicks Q was oftentimes not much more than a cartoon character.

Not so much an IT guy as a magical wizard.
--------------------

It's not just that. It's that the hack occurs because Q violates the single biggest rule of network security, something that anyone who spends any time at all working with computers should know not to commit. It's flat out the single most stupid thing he could possibly have done. You NEVER hook an unfamiliar device up to your network. And yet he does exactly that. And promptly gets hacked.

Funny story about that -

I was explaining to a friend of mine why that scene in Skyfall bugs me so much. The friend in question happens to run his own store. And it just so happened that later in the day, as he was recalling the conversation, he spotted an unfamiliar flash drive connected to the computer that they keep at the counter (not the register - it's used for other stuff). So he asked one of his employees where the drive had come from. And the employee explained that he'd found the drive on the way into work, and had connected it to the computer so that he could see what was on it.

My friend promptly facepalmed, told his employee to remove it, and then explained why that was a *really* bad idea.

241 Supposedly the Russel Crowe (IIRC) Robin Hood movie started as a script about the Sheriff of Nottingham, making him a much more complex and sympathetic character. But, then, no, just a (reportedly, I haven't seen it) bog-standard Robin Hood film.

(For me, what's interesting about things like Robin Hood that get a new version or iteration fairly regularly is what new things or twists are added, and what sticks from the previous version, that kind of thing-- sometimes Robin Hood's a Crusader returning home, sometimes not; sometimes he's a actual criminal who becomes a hero, sometimes he's always been the hero, that kind of thing. Making the sheriff-- the tax collector and de facto law-enforcement officer of the area-- less of a mustache-twirling 2-dimensional villain and more of an antihero or whatever intrigues me.)

Regarding Network, 'Weird Al' Yankovic's movie UHF IMO covers some of that subject matter way way better (and much funnier). That being said, I'm young enough to have seen UHF well before Network.

One of the awesome things about campus movie nights was that they'd show the Bugs Bunny version as a trailer to the movie they were showing, so we got "Welcome to Shoi-wood" before we saw the Errol Flynn movie. And "To Have, to Have, to Have" before the Bogie Bacall thing.

Now, the twist, for whoever asked about that sort of thing upthread, in the Russell Crowe Robing Hood is that it's "La Retour du Martin Guerre".

Crowe's a returning Crusader but he has to adopt a fake identity to return the Maguffin to someone, and he ends up having to pass as Kate Blanchette's husband.

(Richard Gere did a "Martin Guerre" remake, but I forget the name.

There's a Spanish film called "Fermat's Room" about 4 mathematicians locked in a room who have to solve puzzles in a certain time or the walls of the room start moving in to crush them.

I liked it. But it's one of those movies where I remember seeing it, and I remember liking it, but I don't remember hardly any details about it! Anyone else have that happen?

300 #294 Colorado Alex --

I felt it was over-praised, though I liked it a great deal.

I thought, as mentioned, that it was a philosophical model. "If everyone's super, no one is"? What does that even mean? That we all have to be average in order for people to excel?

I mean, if Syndrome is going to empower people with mechanical devices, why wouldn't that be a good thing all around? (See, Industrial Revolution, The.)

301 Oddly enough, the old Blues Bros is wearing very well 40-odd years later.

Animal House, Blues Brothers, Rocky Horror -- all of those slightly 'off' movies still are enjoyable. What makes various movies work even when the fashion has moved on?

Aretha was a joy in Blues Bros; one of the times where I was 'monitored' to make sure that I didn't need to be ousted. Dancing in the aisles for 'Think' was a lot of fun.

More times than I can count. It gets really old after a while! That's what the internet says, but the internet also says that it's a Flatbush accent which is the equal mix of Brooklyn and Bronx. (That makes no sense, Flatbush is in the bottom middle of Brooklyn and the Bronx is way up there).

I've always thought of Bugs as having an extinct Manhattan accent, sort of Hell's Kitchen, which also doesn't exist any more.

Accents, like neighborhoods, change over time as new people live there.

Unless NASCAR is paying for those cops ... that's a waste of public funds. And if NASCAR IS paying for those cops ? I've never liked the notion of cops moonlighting using the uniform. You're either On Duty or Off Duty. And if you're Off Duty ... wear your own fucking clothes.

338 I loved The Incredibles 2! My California Man and I saw it twice. I agree that at first it felt like it was going to be all "grrl power, yay!" but I think the point of it was that everyone in a family all needs each other. It didn't feel wrong that Bob was so upset and jealous of his wife, because he was so obsessed in the first movie to return to superhero work. He had a taste and then it was gone.
I thought Violet looked like a stressed-out 50 year old and Dash looked too much like Buddy from the first film. That distracted me the first bit of the movie, but the story pulled me in.
I thought it was real how hard it was for anyone to watch Jack-Jack. It's a thankless job, taking care of a baby, especially when you have to put off "fun" things to stay home. But that, too, was a lesson learned--it's worth it and it's important to invest time in your little ones.
Anyway, I think this movie is worth a chance.
Was it a perfect movie? Nope. But it was incredible.

That woman was the most Nazi-ish Jew I've ever seen.

Very chilling.

My memory is that the Underminer got away, as well. Also, except for a hint of grrl power with Elastigirl, I saw nothing SJW in this movie. Maybe you were just in a bad mood when you saw it?

Posted by: Kate Winslet's boobs at August 18, 2018 09:49 PM (+q3Wx)

399 No, actually, as much as I had lowered my expectations for this film, they weren't low enough, and the subsequent film I saw was surprisingly good.

I recalled it as The Underminer didn't get away with the money, or that he was to some extent foiled by Mr. Incredible. If I have that wrong--I don't really care. It had nothing at all to do with the quality of the film.

Though, if you think about it: What's up with that? Shouldn't they have brought him to justice? Was that just a dangling failure left there?

Posted by: moviegique at August 18, 2018 09:55 PM (CcUfv)

Posted by: moviegique at August 18, 2018 09:55 PM (CcUfv)

No. The Underminer's voice actor is in every PIXAR movie. I assume he got away so they could make a third.

That's so strange that you hated the movie. I went in hesitantly, worried about SJW crap, and was very pleasantly surprised.

Posted by: Kate Winslet's boobs at August 18, 2018 10:00 PM (+q3Wx)

402 I thought it was okay. The Mr. Mom thing was tired but I didn't think it was SJW tripe. He's tired because, well, parenting is tiring. I do agree with the complaint about the other super heroes. They were complete freaks. I thought the fight scenes were excellent.

I will say the intro short was one of the worst Pixar shorts I have ever seen.

404 My text got mangled in the transfer process. But you may note at the end "we didn't hate it" (should have been its own sentence).

Also "I thought it was okay."

I had to chop the review down a lot from my original and some mistakes were made. My bad.

I didn't hate it. It does not, at any level (except the CGI) , rise to the standard Pixar set from 1995-2008.

406 Melissa McCarthy is another one of those "comediennes" who only is one because she has been so designated by producers and directors having a specific agenda. Much like Amy Schumer.
Posted by: Insomniac at August 18, 2018 09:01 PM (NWiLs)

I don't like her as a person or an actress, but Melissa McCarthy is a comedienne like Lucille Ball was a comedienne, although McCarthy picks a lot of crap movies. She was funny in Mike & Molly, and very funny in Bridesmaids, and Spy. And the Sean Spicer thing on SNL was pretty funny, too. I think she earns the term comedienne.

407 I liked Incredibles 2. It took the entire family working together to save the day; in the end family power trumps over Grrrrl power. Which is a good message. The scene with Bob and Violet, dad and daughter, where he spills his guts to her showed that at the end of the day he WAS taking dad duty seriously, he was just in uncharted waters. He wants to be a superdad as much as a superhero. That whole scene is the climax for his parental development in the movie. I liked it. Violet ditching her date to solve crime with her fam at the end made me laugh.

Any SJW balloons that popped up got holes poked into them at some point, especially with how the REAL villain's arc turns out. And she's not 100% wrong, tbh. It IS better to protect your fam yourself than to solely rely on someone else (superheroes or the govt) to save you. It is a somewhat libertarian stance. She just takes it to a villainy extreme. The most annoying SJW thing was the hint that superheroes = illegals. It felt strong in the beginning, but died away once things with the plot kicked up, thank goodness.

Definitely agree that the secondary superheroes character designs were terrible. Like an unfinished draft, bleh.

Any of the scenes with Jack Jack stole the show. Edna's my fave, I LOVED her scenes with him. And yes yes yes, Jack Jack's scene with his first superhero antagonist ever, the backyard raccoon, was probably the highlight of the film for me!

409 >>> I thought, as mentioned, that it was a philosophical model. "If everyone's super, no one is"? What does that even mean? That we all have to be average in order for people to excel? I mean, if Syndrome is going to empower people with mechanical devices, why wouldn't that be a good thing all around? (See, Industrial Revolution, The.)
Posted by: moviegique at August 18, 2018 08:43 PM (CcUfv)

I think you would like the How It Should Have Ended version of the Incredibles! It touches on your points.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0VJaFN4bnc

I think with Syndrome, it comes down to intent and motivation. His being rebuffed by his superhero idol turned his idololization into jealousy and resentment. He wants to level the playing field and destroy the illusion that anyone is special, take his once idol down a notch. It is a rather SJW thing to do; I can't have what you have so I'm going to destroy you. He takes a good idea, making machines to help people, and twists it into a villainy angle that ends up destroying himself. (Kinda also what the SJWs do.)

Posted by: LizLem at August 18, 2018 11:05 PM (hvf9s)

410 I love that the Muslim character from Prince of Thieves gets called Asneeze in the Mel Brooks Men in Tights version, and his son is Achoo. And that it's a gag that pays off a few times in the film. Yet another joke you could not make today! So grateful Mel was at the height of his powers before the SJW culture clashes began. The world would be poorer for it.

Posted by: LizLem at August 18, 2018 11:10 PM (hvf9s)

411 Bud Luckey was a lot more than Mr. Dicker and the narrator for Boundin' (which he wrote, designed all the characters, played the banjo and directed). He had a long and illustrious career in animation before Pixar hired him to design the characters in Toy Story, their first feature. This was after he'd done dozens of classic shorts for Sesame Street (Ladybug's Picnic, etc) which he wrote, animated and sang and played songs he wrote. Much more, google him.

412 LizLem-- good points, and I had a lot of same thoughts watching the first "Incredibles" movie.

docweasel-- Absolutely. I went off on a lot of that, but i was trying to keep the review under 1,000 words. =P

Posted by: moviegique at August 19, 2018 11:26 AM (CcUfv)

413 I agree about the awkwardness of the actors appearing at the beginning. Other than that this is a terrible review. Obviously you went in with your political hammer and whaddaya know...you found yourself a nail.

The characters acted in accordance with their own actual motivations. And as some point out, it was pretty clear they poked fun at over the top SJWs along the way.

When does TJM return?

Posted by: parsimony at August 19, 2018 12:05 PM (eWf6q)

414 Awww, parsimony, I wouldn't call the review terrible. I have differences of opinion in certain places with moviegique (heaven forbid!) but I think some really great points were brought up on subjects I had not thought about concerning the movie. Which is important to me in reviews. And I thought the review sparked some interesting points of discussion in the comments. I just wish I could have chimed in sooner; on Saturdays I usually get to reading the movie thread after all the hubbub has died down.

Coblogging is an intimidating gig (I imagine), so I can't imagine what guest coblogging is like! Thanks for doing it moviegique, and I hope you get the chance again sometime.

Posted by: LizLem at August 20, 2018 06:10 PM (hvf9s)

415 Thanks, LizLem!

Parsimony, I can only tell you that you're wrong about my mindset going in. I can't make you believe me.

At some level, if I see a 90%+ Rotten Tomatoes score I can't expect a bad movie. And it wasn't bad. Just mediocre and larded up with SJW nonsense.
