Hubby and I have kept out finances totally separate for the last ten years, ever since we paid off the house and all other debt. No joint checking/savings, no joint credit cards. We each handle certain household expenses and the split is fairly equitable altho his retirement income is double mine. I have been *kinda* nagging him for a while because he has one credit card that I am on as jointly responsible on and I know that he opened that without me agreeing to it. It bugs me because it shows up when I go online to my bank and I see the balance. Well the balance was steady for a long time, but recently went up to about 7.5k and I don't like that. I started thinking about how I pay all my stuff off every month, paid for the new roof, paid for the kitchen remodel, etc and started wondering why he doesn't pay this the hell off and get me out of his hair.
Well, I looked at his pile of bills on his desk this morning and the sob has racked up almost 75k in credit card debt!!!! On nothing. On cigars. On lottery tickets. On buying crap on Amazon. A knife here, more bullets there, survival gear/food, a second computer for his desk, etc. I knew he was buying things, but I never looked at prices or his bills because I assumed he knew what he could afford. I want to weep. I want to strangle him. This is the third time he has run up bills irresponsibly. Twice before I took things over and got us out of the mess because we were jointly committed. I don't know what to do this time. Not sure I care. I am demoralized, depressed and profoundly disappointed in him.

Sounds like she was part cat as well. I used to try to give Kira medicine using pill pockets, and she would eat the pocket and leave the pill.

Glad to see the White Horse Tavern is still doing well. It is a landmark in my home town. In its time it has served pirates and possibly presidents. Or presidents-to-be. IIRC, Rochambeau, Lafayette and General Washington dined there. It was a cool place.

I admit I have similar issues with my own credit and money. Sometimes I get into a funk and just go nuts trying to climb out of it by spending tons of money on music, movies and gambling.
I've gotten a lot better but I still slip up sometimes. It's just that now I can usually stop myself after about $100-200, rather than like a few years ago, when I literally had something like 11 payday loans.
I don't blame you for being angry, but if I were you I would blow off steam *before* speaking to your husband about it. Maybe he needs some counseling, both credit and otherwise. Maybe he's having a hard time at work. Maybe something else is going on that he's not talking to you about. It's easy for me to say because I'm not the one on the hook, but please try to talk to him before you lay down the law. Just my two cents.

Shit. I'm sorry to hear this. I think the first thing you should work on is getting yourself OFF that damned credit card. You don't want that liability. If he got you on it without your approval, you might want to speak to a lawyer about it.
You need to try and protect yourself financially in the event things get worse. I hope this can be worked out. He apparently has a problem(s), since you indicated something similar happened before.

I only in the past two years have finally been able to start bringing my credit back up. Have two low-limit CCs with NO late pays, and an auto loan, also with no late pays whatsoever.
Also I stay away from the payday loan places and just let myself go hungry or without certain necessities for a couple days sometimes, if I absolutely have to.

If you want to get your shit straight, get a list of all your creditors, send them a letter saying that you will only accept communication by letter to an address that you choose, give them that address, and deal with it from there. Whether you choose to hire a lawyer or declare bankruptcy (which is often a pretty liberating option) or make payments or whatever, at least everything is done through one channel and you don't have to worry about them calling you.
Though for the first few months after you do tell them that you won't speak to them over the phone, keep a mini digital voice recorder with you so you can put them on speakerphone and get a record if they call you. They aren't allowed to do that if you've told them to contact you only by mail.

When I was a young teen, I was the family navigator. It seemed every trip I would be woken 30 seconds before we had to make a decision. I developed some skills there.

I just want to make sure that you are taking steps to protect yourself financially, which it seems you are already doing that and have presented at least one option.
I have been in a situation where another party had done something similar. For me, it was a make or break situation, and things were resolved without the 'break', and so far there is no evidence of any 'backsliding'.
Try to keep working on moving forward. Yeah, easier said than done, I know. There will be time for venting later.

Collection agencies and the credit rating companies are rackets. They don't take stuff fake and fraudulent stuff off, they don't keep their records updated, they take zero responsibility&accountability&consequences for their actions, and they make money by fucking people and lying to them. They prey on the poor and middle class who can't afford lawyers who will do shit. They make it impossible to fix an error on their end. Their records are pure garabage. I left a leased car in my driveway for a year without moving it because the car company said they would send a tow since I was out of town and the lease was up. A year. They had a tow truck and a PI investigating the wrong adddress for a year. I picked up the phone one day and it was the Private Investigator. I told him the car has been waiting in the driveway for a year and I have not even turned in on. Come pick it up, I'm not paying because the dealership had the wrong addrress. Fuck em.
I have zero love or sympathy for them. Retards.

Mark Levin had a credit counselor (Anthony Davenport) on to talk about his new book ("Your Score") a few years ago. I'm not a financial expert by a long shot - and some commenters here, in point of fact, are by profession - but I checked it out from the library and it seemed concise, logical, reasonable, etc. That was one of the things he mentioned, getting a handle on who you owe how much to and how they can communicate with you. It might be worth checking around to see if you can snag a copy from the library, or ask here and see if anyone who knows what they're talking about has an opinion on it.

Find out how much of your husband's debt is Priority (i.e. to the government, particularly the IRS, State, property tax or local tax authorities), how much is Secured (i.e., your home, car or something else substantial has been collateralized to back up the debt), or Unsecured (where NOTHING stands behind the debt, besides a promise to pay).
If it all turns out to be unsecured, your credit rating can still be ruined, but legally there is NOTHING the creditors can take from you to enforce their debt. If you don't pay, all they can do is (a) ruin your ratings, (b) blacklist you from any more loans of any type and (c) pound sand.

Student loans are considered PRIORITY debt in bankruptcy. They CANNOT be discharged under any circumstances, even if a judge wants to discharge them or they have usurious interest rates.

Since you mention you're both retired, a painful subject to bring up, but one you need to consider as a possibility, is early onset dementia/alzheimers. It can subtly destroy someone's judgment, and it's onset can occur at what most of us would consider far too young an age - early 60's, for example.
I have also known of someone who was prescribed medication for early symptoms of Parkinsons, and who as a side effect of the medication developed a compulsive gambling habit almost overnight, when they had never had one before. It's surprising the psycho-active counterindications that some prescription drugs can have.

All of which is clearly explained before signing on the dotted line. There's even a required lecture/meeting thing to attend before accepting the loans.
And in return there are nice benefits as well, such as with Stafford subsidized loans where the Feds pay your interest while you are in school.
I don't like the effect that financial aid has had on allowing universities to raise tuition through the roof year after year, and there is far too much peer/authority/societal pressure to attend college which inflates the demand, but these are (nearly all) adults taking out these loans, so they are ultimately responsible for paying that debt back.

And as you reference, you've had a bug about this in the back of your head for a long time.... as soon as you said that the two of you kept your finances completely separate, I wondered what the rest of the story was, since not many couples do that, especially when they're retired. Box Office: Kevin Spacey's 'Billionaire Boys Club' Earns Abysmal $126 on Opening Day
In 10 "select" theaters not including in NY or LA. A whopping $126 dollars. That works out to just less than two people per theater on opening day. Not sure how that breaks down to people per showing. Gotta wonder if they'll be a second weekend.

Depending on how much stuff your hubby has amassed, this could take a respectable bite out of the Debt Pie.
And I'd think that if you listed all of his books in the Book Thread, you'd pick up some green there, too.
You should sell your hubby's stuff down to the substainence level. If he's not actively using this "stuff" in real life, it gets sold.
You might also get an attorney to set everything up into a Revokeable Living Trust, where you have full Power of Attorney over every aspect of his life, health, finances, medical, etc.
And if your/his doctor can declare him to be incompetent, well, he's not going to alter that Trust in court, thereafter.

I do believe he has been exhibiting dementia/alzheimer's symptons for a couple years. His dad died of it. But at this point it is only evident to a person as close as I am. I remember when his father began to fail and it was years before anyone else realized there was anything wrong with him. Right now, he would seem quite competent to any judge. But I am planning on the sale of the ammo, the books and the *extra* guns.

Another resource to look at is Dave Ramsey. He is something of a cheerleader, but a lot of people need encouragement peppered with direction and someone willing to tell you "that was as dumb as what I did".
I took an ex girlfriend to one of his stadium presentations once upon a time, and I found it useful. She had all the debt and couldn't get over the hump to do something about it, but I found it very useful.

I do a metal cruise every year. 60 metal bands. Great frigging cruise. One year we actually drank the ship dry before it left the port, and was delayed while it was being restocked. Think of that shit. Devastated a cruise ship's booze inventory in 5 hours.

The captain was, lol. Seriously, I talked to the captain one year. He said it was his favorite cruise. No fights, nobody complaining, nobody in the brig, break all booze records, and everybody has a good time. This is one of the bigger Royal Caribbean ships. Even the crew has a blast, because they don't have to be prim and proper to impress rich old foggies, so they can cut loose. They actually volunteer for that cruise.

No. The reparations were based on gold standard apart from the domestic currencies of Germany or Austria (which also had reparations). The hyperinflation in both countries was not a result of making payments to the victors.
However, Keynes argued against any reparations, as he considered that any long term national debt would destroy any economy, and lead to nasty social/political consequences.
Ask any Keynesian about that today, and....

I remember reading a short time ago that Germany's reparations to France under the Versailles Treaty weren't paid off until the mid-1980s (which was around the date stipulated in the Treaty). Hitler stopped paying reparations and used that money in rebuilding Germany's military.
One of Hitler's complaints in getting elected was The Versailles Treaty as a whole and the issue of reparations for starting the war in particular. IMAO, Germany was right to feel unfairly blamed for starting the war. That doesn't excuse the atrocities Germany committed in Belgium and elsewhere during the war, but I never thought Germany started it.

I glanced at a Wiki article on the subject after posting the above (warning - Wiki). It stated that the reparations themselves were paid off in 1932 (due in part to some renegotiations), but that money was borrowed during the course of making the payments. Those loans were then paid off in the '90s (there was a post-WW2 agreement that the loans didn't need to be paid until Germany was reunited).

With the old exposures you got one or twenty shots, each one at an expertly estimated exposure, and again if there was any question about missed images or artifacts of the exposure.
The digitals can be rolled through and enlarged, the intensity and saturation can be modified right there on the screen to look for those wee tiny little fractures and flaws. The detail is amazing and I am told the xray dose is much lower that with film.
I watched a tech explain to me what he was doing and seeing and he showed me, I was dumbfounded at what was possible.
Even my dentist has the digital system now, I am a fan.

--Medicine is the best American counterpart to the British dream pop bands (I never liked the term "shoegaze" because it referred to a look, not a sound), and while I regrettably never saw them live, I've heard they were technically superior to MBV, who allegedly went more with loops than actual play when performing live. OTOH, Brad Laner was by accounts a genius with guitar, and could perform all the sounds on the album live. Side note: Laner's previous band was Savage Republic, which IMHO must be one of the ten best band names ever.
