FaceBook to Banks: Say, Why Don't You Give Us The Checking Account Balances for Your Clients on FaceBook?

They might have asked the actual users if they wanted FaceBook to have their account information.

But I imagine they expected the answer would be "No."

So they're doing an end-around their own alleged customers (FaceBook users aren't its customers, they're its products) and just asked their corporate partners in banking for the information.

Facebook has requested customer financial information from a number of U.S. banks without obtaining permission from users, according to a recent report. Included in the requests are credit card transactions and checking account balances for the customers.

Facebook has spoken with JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup Inc. and U.S. Bancorp. Their requests are ostensibly to "help" their users by showing their checking account balances on their Facebook feed, making it easier to sell products and services.

...

According to the Wall Street Journal, a person familiar with the discussions said that "Facebook has told banks that the additional customer information could be used to offer services that might entice users to spend more time on Messenger."

"The company is trying to deepen user engagement," the WSJ reported. "Investors shaved more than $120 billion from its market value in one day last month after it said its growth is starting to slow.”

A Facebook spokesman said, "We don't use purchase data from banks or credit card companies for ads. We also don't have special relationships, partnerships, or contracts with banks or credit-card companies to use their customers' purchase data for ads." The spokesman added, "Like many online companies, we routinely talk to financial institutions about how we can improve people’s commerce experiences, like enabling better customer service. An essential part of these efforts is keeping people's information safe and secure."

How thoughtful. They're doing this for us! Yes, we know how well that works.

8 All the more reason not to use it, and to pay cash for everything you can. But more than this, the overreach is astounding and I am not certain it is legal - finances are (somewhat) specially protected.
This would almost certainly be covered by the "how do I limit my sharing" stuff your bank *must* send you if you ask for it. I strongly recommend you ask your bank about how to opt-out from data sharing. You can't opt out from everything, but you can limit your exposure and you should do so.

10 Two thoughts on this:

(1) If you are using your real name and info on Facebook, you're silly. I know fake names and crap are against their TOS, but so what. They can still track all my likes and clicks and make connections to my contacts, but it would take a little more work. They don't have my phone number, real email address, real home town, birthday, etc.
(2) Big banks suck ass. Community banks, or credit unions are the way to go. BOA, Wells-Fargo, Chase, can all DIAF.

They probably actually do know who you are, especially if you're a frequent user, don't use incognito/private browsing mode, use it on a mobile device, and stay signed in a lot while doing other browser.

They have good dossier-building capability, especially for mobile users. They could connect you through known purchases with partners via your E-Mail address, find your addresses, correlate against your phone number, etc. It would probably be right more often than wrong, and that's all that counts.

Unless you don't trust them, of course. But why wouldn't you trust them? They're super-benevolent.

If it's not opt-in on the user's part, how do Facebook and the banks differentiate me from the 120,000 other Bandersnatches?

Facebook doesn't have my SS#, it doesn't have my bank account. It has fishing buddies, high school and college friends, and a dozen or so ex-girlfriends.

I should like to have the mechanics of this explained.

But then it turned out their staff consisted of an affirmative action hire (STEM woman!), a music (not CS) major, that allowed all of their clients information to be hacked? Remember that?

Even if you trusted facebook's intent, on one front (that they really wanted to safeguard your data), there's no reason to trust them on other fronts, ie. that they valued safeguarding your data above politically correct hiring protocol, so that they might actually hire people on merit rather than their ability to safeguard your data.

I'm still surprised the Obama White House had an affirmative action hire who was so inept she allowed a fence jumper to wander around inside the White House several minutes before he was apprehended. If political correctness is so important that even the person of Obama can be sacrificed, certainly your personal data is no biggie.

180 Facebook has requested customer financial information from a number of U.S. banks without obtaining permission from users, according to a recent report. Included in the requests are credit card transactions and checking account balances for the customers.

Now, there has to be something illegal in this. Even if the banks wanted to colude with FarceBook and expose the idiot FarceBook users' banking info, they aren't allowed to. And I'm pretty sure FarceBook is not even allowed to ask.

Right. I don't get the hate. A lot of people get something out of it.

For my generation it was because our kids were going online and we wanted to keep an eye on them. Then we saw that all of our friends who had kids the same age were doing the same thing and then we reconnected and sometimes had sex with each other.

I don't get my news from FB. I don't get my politics there. I keep in touch with people I otherwise wouldn't hear from regularly.

And I totally don't think I'm the only Hordeling who uses Facebook regularly.

184 The big thing that changed here is no the appearance of the technology, if you even want to call it that, of Facebook. They're just operating under the ancient business principle of "It can't hurt to ask."

We built ourselves the power structure that would answer their call under the decade of Banking Reform that followed on the Keating Five and "Ohio Savings and Loan" scandals. That reduced the effective number of banking companies in the country from several hundred to less than a dozen. The opposition squealed, while it went on, that this would happen.

Chances are good that if you have a good old-fashioned account with a li'l-ole local bank, or a credit union, the actual assets are held, and data processed, by one of this handful of megabanks. It's like the Six-Six-Six and Protocols of The Elders, rolled up into one.
Hey Calm Mentor, is any of this comprehensible to you?

196 States such as Mass. could take exception to allowing FB to have access to banking info. PII (personally identifiable information) is regulated. Depending on the info FB would need about a consumer, they are also dancing pretty close to the line regarding Visa's PCI DSS (payment card information data security standards) regulations. With FB's propensity to offer up their customer's data to whomever wants it (if you are a Dem), this could get interesting.

My guess is no and the reason is the extremely high bar that is required to get a FISA warrant.

Not only is there an exhaustive application to fill out the requester is asserting 1) there is evidence that the US person is employed by a foreign government and 2) that the person is actively spying for the foreign government. The application then goes through a gauntlet of sign offs that reaches the highest levels of both the FBI and DOJ including the head of the FBI National Security Division, the head of the FBI, the Deputy AG or the AG. And don't forget, before adding the Steele information they were turned down for a FISA warrant on Page.

This is why for over a year Andy McCarthy said it was crazy bananas for anyone to assert the application was fraudulent, he couldn't conceive of a situation where all of these people were in on the scam. He admitted a couple weeks ago when the redacted version came out that he had been wrong.

And this explains the extremely high acceptance rate for FISA warrants on US citizens. The rate is over 99% meaning by the time it gets to the judge it is basically a rubber stamp.

The belief was that the system was so rigorous you could never get a fraudulent warrant through. Obviously, they never counted on the Obama Intel community taking over.

They can still track all my likes and clicks and make connections to my contacts, but it would take a little more work. They don't have my phone number, real email address, real home town, birthday, etc.

It's RIDICULOUSLY easy to connect a Facebook account to a real person from Facebook's side of things.

All it takes is a bit of network analysis to see who you're interacting with. Some of them are going to be friends or family. Some of THOSE people are going to post their real info. Boom. Now you're narrowed down to one of about 200 real life persons.

Just a few personal details sprinkled in from your posting history and they have you.

A FISA warrant allows you to look at anyone within 2 hops of the intended target. It also allows you to look backwards.

Of course they didn't take the warrant on Trump. They didn't have to.

LOL. When in history has that ever been true of any government process? Hint: ... never.

And the FISA judges were in on it and as corrupt as the treasonous intelligence community. They all deserve to be perp-walked and, at the very least, serve serious hard time. Hard labor would be nice, but we're too stupid to allow something reasonable, and well-deserved, like that anymore.

254 I believe that when all is said and done we are going to see that the FISA process was systematically abused for years. Mainly by the Obama administration but it wouldn't surprise me if there was some under the Bush administration as well. This might be the most famous case but it won't be the only one.

And that's part of the delay. What happens to all the cases that were developed using FISA warrants? I know I'd sure as shit be telling my lawyer to file an appeal.

I've been yowling for ages now that the reason why the judges thought this was routine was because it was routine.

Also, that all of us super crazy civil libertarians turned out to be right about what would happen with a secret court.

Here's the thing, I do agree, though cautiously, that there needs to be some kind of system for obtaining warrants in case where there are legitimate security concerns. It's just that, as always, the pendulum swung too far towards utter secrecy and point blank rubber stamping of warrants.

Well, under Barky, everyone in the administration was corrupt. If they weren't they didn't last.

As to judges, I have about zero respect for judges. After watching the bukkake theater of 2008 when all the federal and state judges managed to find that American citizens have no standing in forcing a candidate to merely prove that he's eligible for the position he's running for (especially when it was proven that certain SecStates had not done their due dilligence and had allowed even NON-CITIZENS on the Presidential ballot) ... that pretty much did it for me.

And as bad as those regular judges are, I'm sure the sooper-secret FISA judges are 10 times worse. And from what we know they allowed the only reasonable conclusion is that those involved were dirty as all get-out and in on this attack on the Trump campaign up to their noses.

Did you ever see the commercial they used to run for it. I saw it more than a few times on Fox. It was the very definition of creepy.

A guy is seeing his doctor, on a stage witha full audience. The doctor asks the guy medical questions and questions about his history but before he can answer someone in a doctor's smock in the audience jumps up and shouts out his information. The guy looks surprised at this. It keeps happening.

And this commercial was supposed to make you desire to be in that sort of situation!

That used to drive me crazy. Then the commercial went out of rotation and I never saw it again. I couldn't even find any reference to it on the internet. It was like the video of the Iranians mobbing the fetid corpse of the Ayatollah, knocking it to the ground and tearing at it ... totally gone and impossible to find. *Poof*

That was the creepiest ad I had ever seen ... and I couldn't believe that anyone actually thought that that was a cool thing that people would love. Leftists are totally insane, in addition to being destructive.
