Economy Grows at 4.1%, Fastest Quarterly Rate Since 2014

Trump has set 3.0% growth for the full year as a goal, which would have been likely if the quarterly rate had been 4.2%. But at 4.1%, economists now say 2.8% yearly growth is most likely.

Still, within striking distance, certainly.

t Anthony Chan breaks down the second-quarter GDP and the outlook for the U.S. economy.
U.S. gross domestic product advanced by 4.1% in the second quarter, the fastest pace of economic expansion since 2014 – when third-quarter growth reached 5.2%.

After the GDP report was released President Trump tweeted, "Great GDP numbers just released." In a press conference at the White House Trump said annual GDP growth "will be over 3%."

The Trump administration has implemented pro-growth policies, including a sweeping tax reform package meant to bolster businesses. The last time annual GDP growth was above 3% was in 2005 when it came in at 3.3%. George W. Bush was president when the U.S. economy hit this growth rate. The best annual GDP reading under President Barack Obama was 2.9%.

Back in the 90s, Jonah Goldberg was on one of those panel discussion shows with a fat ass lefty bitch by the name of Julianne Malvaux (sp?) who came right out and said she hoped Clarence Thomas would eat a bunch of greasy, fatty foods and die an early death of heart disease like so many other black men. Goldberg was speechless.

In darker news, though, I do fear for the midterms. The Republicans in congress seem to be doing their all to keep from winning. How about a compromise for August recess. Either that, or they must go to San Francisco and clean the streets. With their tongues. That way they'd replenish the store of all they've been spewing.

There is a difference (not just a factor of 4) between "quarterly" GDP and "annual" GDP.

Hopefully Q2 gets revised upwards. And with the tax cut and that proverbial "back to school" shopping - Q3 is at least 3.5 - 4%. I don't buy some people talking about the Europeans (see export/import) stocking up on goods before the tariffs took / take effect - having a large impact on Q2. Q2 ended 30-Jun and certainly Trump was talking about tariffs. But they'd have had to order a boat load of stuff in late April / May for it to have a material effect on Q2.

I've said it before: the investigations, the backstabbing, the Twitter follies, all of this pales in importance before the economy as far as most Americans are concerned.

The key questions are:

1. Am I working?

B. Are my family members working?

III. Are we doing better?

Answer these "yes" and you're doing well politically.

120 OT Willowed comment from last thread:

I encourage everyone to read this article. It's at Gizmodo, but don't let that discourage you.

There's a lot to summarize, but bear with me. A Polish immigrant to the US who became a realtor is online arguing with the crazies. Remember the freakout about the young woman who took a cheerful selfie when she was at Auschwitz? The realtor was arguing with them, basically saying they need to calm down.

Two different strangers independently decided to dox her, then one posted a false story on "She's a homewrecker" claiming the realtor slept with her husband in a house she was supposed to be showing them. That story got reposted on her Re/Max review site.

After hundreds of thousands in lost wages and legal bills, the realtor discovers the identity of the poster and another person who decided to pile on. She got them to desist, but "She's a homewrecker" refuses to take the post down.

But one R - who is considered to be in a toss-up seat in KS, no less - actually spoke in favor of one of the pernicious items. Items covered both the Imbecilic Moral Narcissism front (expanding asylum claims to include fear of criminal activity) and the Commercial Greed front (expanding temporary labor visas).

Dear Lisa Abramowicz,

I know economists are pig ignorant when they're not being batshit insane, but the reason Treasury yields are falling isn't because the economic boom isn't "sustainable." It's because with GDP rising this quickly, the Fed is almost certainly going to raise interest rates. Rightly or wrongly, it is certainly predictable.

251 I know economists are pig ignorant when they're not being batshit insane, but the reason Treasury yields are falling isn't because the economic boom isn't "sustainable." It's because with GDP rising this quickly, the Fed is almost certainly going to raise interest rates. Rightly or wrongly, it is certainly predictable.

Sucking off elderly creeps might have helped Andrea Mitchell, but if that's the case please find work where your basic incompetence is less obvious.

Back to school spending is roughly the same every year and the tax cuts won't have much of an effect if $billions were rushed out the door last month for import/export to beat the new tariffs. Not only will the tariffs make a dent but that economic activity squeezed into Q2 will be missing from Q3.
I'm not predicting horrible Q3 numbers, I'm only suggesting expectations be set properly so that a growth number in the 2%'s for Q3 won't be spun as a huge decline instead of what it is, more growth added to continued upward trend.

numbers are year over year I think, so it will be compared to last school spending time.

If Europe drops tariffs (as hinted/agreed) then perhaps numbers would go up in response, instead of down ... hard to say. But if there was some inventory build up in advance of expected tariffs, that could depress the next quarter ... hard to find good analysis that is politics free.

310 Paul Krugman - The lawn gnome of economics the day after Trump won:

It really does now look like President Donald J. Trump, and markets are plunging. When might we expect them to recover?

The disaster for America and the world has so many aspects that the economic ramifications are way down my list of things to fear.

Still, I guess people want an answer: If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer is never.

Under any circumstances, putting an irresponsible, ignorant man who takes his advice from all the wrong people in charge of the nation with the world’s most important economy would be very bad news. What makes it especially bad right now, however, is the fundamentally fragile state much of the world is still in, eight years after the great financial crisis.

Now comes the mother of all adverse effects — and what it brings with it is a regime that will be ignorant of economic policy and hostile to any effort to make it work. Effective fiscal support for the Fed? Not a chance. In fact, you can bet that the Fed will lose its independence, and be bullied by cranks.

So we are very probably looking at a global recession, with no end in sight. I suppose we could get lucky somehow. But on economics, as on everything else, a terrible thing has just happened.

It's not that I don't care, it's that after years of the Left making every election about social issues - abortion, SSM, etc. - Trump has completely redirected the focus to the things a POTUS *should* be focusing on - the economy, jobs, tax cuts, foreign policy, protecting Americans here and abroad.

It's quite a feat, and a welcome one, since the Dems use these social issues to smear the GOP as old, white prudes who want to turn back the clock to the 50's.

The president typically did not have much to he could do about things like abortion, marriage, but then the Left made it the government's business through PP funding, Obamacare and so on. I LOVE that Trump wants to get the government back to a reasonable place in our lives, not in every corner, every personal decision.

If he keeps Hulk-smashing every issue he turns his attention to, the general not-paying-attention public will start to get suspicious.

If he can be wrong every once in a while about something, then the general cavalcade of asskickery seems more plausible.

As a corollary: It shows emotionally that he's willing to bet big on America, and not be timid or underestimate the economy. It shows strength, vigor, and hope.

Last thing I saw was Sanders was saying it was all a Republican hit job because the person requesting the investigation happened to be a Republican party local official, although he made the complaint in some role as a representative of the local Diocese. For those that don't know, the Diocese had prime lakefront property they had to sell off to pay sexual abuse claims. Mrs. Sanders swooped in to pick up the land for Burlington College, and both the Diocese and a local bank were hurt when the college could not pay.

right ... if we imported ahead of the tariff it decreased GDP
if Europe agreed to buy more soybeans (I think they did just two days ago) ... that will increase GDP this quarter (Q3)

I was probably confused/confusing on inventory build up .. it depends who was avoiding what tariff, or what expected tariff (which may become them dropping tariffs, not us adding tariffs). If they respond with dropping tariffs (and we don't add them) ... that also will help future GDP.

I've had this discussion with my daughter, who is not a Trump fan.

She asked me how I, a Christian, could support Trump, who cheated on his wives, when I condemned Clinton for doing the same thing.

I told her actions speak louder than words, and that through Jesus Christ and true repentance, people can change.

Discussion pretty much ended after that...oh well.

I am heartened by the things that Trump is doing.

But I put my faith in Christ, not man; as in the days of Noah, people will go about their business and thinking that all is well...until the deluge.

Enough sermonizing from me...gotta finish getting ready for a road trip.

Not what you're taking about, but:
My understanding is that the Obama "Stimulus" ($1 trillion) largely went to bail out union pension funds. In the U.S. economy, the multiplier effect, i.e. dollars of economic activity resulting from a dollar spent, is generally thought to be about $2. The estimated multipler for the Stimulus was $0.75. That could be seen as an achievement of some sort, I suppose.
