53 I know they're on an angle to the viewer but it seems to me that the door and shutter don't quite line up with the window. Door looks too wide and the curve at the top doesn't match the arch.

Now that you mention it, that's true. I guess it could be explained as an afterthought. They needed to cover the archway but couldn't afford something custom-made so they just took something that sort of fit, but not snugly.

69 I really like his use of color, it is appropriate to the scene and is restful to the eyes. The image itself is pleasant and relaxing and Sorbi's earth tone palette matches that. I would definitely like it on my wall.

I don't know if the artist belongs to a particular school. Some of his works are almost Impressionistic while others are nearly photo quality.

83 Had to look up Sorbi, the stub I found noted that he did quite a bit of work featuring 18th century dress, even though he worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. That explains the tri-corner hat, and the gentleman's riding gear. He was very popular with the English gentry, who eagerly purchased many of his works, and that would explain why this street scene has a much more English feel to it than Italian. The artist knew his audience. (not just the men, but the cloudy gray sky)

It does have a certain timelessness about it though, doesn't it? Not the characters, I suspect their dress is possibly anachronistic for that year, even in bloody old Italia. The style though, it's got a look that suggests it could have been painted in this century.

Need to say a thank you to CBD for yesterday's bright submission. I really enjoyed it but couldn't comment because car broke down and youngest was attempting to work from home with grandkids running around. (She will not attempt that again for a while.)

I do like that there are bits of unrelated color in this one, but the sky is gray, the stones are gray, etc. Nice representational work and worth second and third looks.

Peter Strzok testified to Congress behind closed doors. He pissed off

Republicans so much they brought him back to testify publicly where he

obfuscated, lied and pretended he couldn't answer a bunch of questions

because the FBI prevented him from doing so.

His public testimony was a flat disaster.

The next day his former "lover" Lisa Page began the first of 2 days

of closed door testimony to Congress. Guys like Mark Meadows came out

and said she was cooperative, rarely deferred to the FBI lawyers who

were with her (for some reason which is odd because she no longer works

for the FBI ..clue) and contradicted Strzok's testimony while providing

new avenues to pursue.

Republicans were so pleased with her testimony they said public

testimony wouldn't be necessary but they announced that they would be

recalling Strzok after the FBI told them that many of the question

Strzok said he couldn't answer they had no objection to.

Strzok and Page have been under investigation by both the IG and a

federal prosecutor for a year now ever since their text messages were

uncovered. Page was allowed to resign from the FBI, Strzok is still

there under FBI control. Page is cooperative, Strzok is not.

Anybody really think all of this is just happening randomly?

Interesting theory and would be fun to contemplate. My thought is that big horses belonged to the wealthy people and donkeys and ponies were something of a luxury to peasants who actually needed the physical help.

Just got back from Acadia a couple weeks ago, absolutely gorgeous. You can't really go wrong with any hike you choose, though some are far more strenuous than others.

Definitely check out Bar Harbor (the town right next to the park,) if you can. Cute little town that feels a little like stepping back in time (coming from Long Island anyway.)

Important point: If you do go to Bar Harbor and are in the mood for ice cream or sweets, DO NOT go to Ben and Bill's chocolate emporium. It might smell and look good, but everything my family tried there (fudge, candy and ice cream) was between outright horrid and average. For some of the best ice cream you'll ever have, head a block down to CJ's.

I do appreciate JackStraw's efforts to stay rational. There is too much pure emotion running around. And that leads to delusion and bad tactics. Recall how many were just sure sure sure that Moore would win the Senate seat; a mirror image of their certainty that Hillary was a cinch. Not new, either. I recall Henry Olsen getting savaged in the comments at NRO for saying Obama bin Lyin' was going to win in 2012. And the Democrat-Journolist delusion in 2004.

Of course most of Barama's policies were built around similar delusions.

208 the old time folks were quite comfortable next to a horse ... my Mom had a stroke and some "dementia", and she'd watch a slide show I had for her and think she was basically in the picture. A picture of my (dead) uncle would go up and she'd tell me "George came by".

So a picture of a horse came up and she said "that horse got loose, take him outside and hook his chain" ... perfectly casual like it was a normal thing. Of course in the earlier years here the horses were part of the daily work, and were "personal friends" in a sense. still makes me laugh (and I happened to record that comment)

Ackullaly, I came back later in the day because of the Column of Trajan conversation and saw your pix. I am incredibly jealous. The other columns look like those from the Basilica Ulpia which was right next to it. I cannot be sure from the angle. Flanking the Column were two multistory libraries - one in Greek and one in Latin - that also would have provided viewing space. The Column was the tallest structure in that Forum.

Cape Cod and 3 up in Acadia. Fairly loose itinerary atm - Newport
mansions, Provincetown, lots of beach time, then hiking in Acadia.
Haven't been out that way in 25+ years - any recommendations/must do's

Just got back from Acadia a couple weeks ago, absolutely gorgeous.
You can't really go wrong with any hike you choose, though some are far
more strenuous than others.

Definitely check out Bar Harbor (the town right next to the park,)
if you can. Cute little town that feels a little like stepping back in
time (coming from Long Island anyway.)

Mrs. OCiS and I along with our family dog went to Acadia end of June.Check out some trails around Jordan's Pond. Nice carriage trails for walking, plus some more challenging trails.
Cadillac Mountain - get up there to see the sunrise or sunset.
Atlantic Brewing has some interesting beers - if you have a down day or rain - worth exploring.
On your way back home, check out Dysarts -it is right when you get on I-95 South. Grab some blueberry pie. Strawberry Rhubarb pie was excellent too. Place is and looks like a crappy truck stop -- but trust me - the pies are fantastic.

Seconded. And his book, Spies of Warsaw, was made into a short series on Netflix (sorry, I know.) But it is excellent.

Check out Udder Heaven for ice cream. Mainely Meat BBQ is right next to it. Good BBQ (for not being down south).
We haven't gone, but I hear the Jordan Pond House restaurant is definitely worth investigating.
Another nice walking trail is the Ocean Trail. Round trip it is a good 3 miles walking along coastline.

The fall, after Labor Day the prices come down. Most things are still open, weather is still very nice and the water (on the south facing side) is warm.
If you have a 4wd, the Cape Cod National Sea Shore opens up a lot more beach that you can drive on. Google it if you want to do this - there are some vehicle requirements.

I agree with the early Forsythe being better. I think I only read one book of his after Dogs of War as that one seemed to be more of a how-to book on how to overthrow a small African dictatorship than a novel. Interesting and all, but not what I was looking for. Years and years ago I'm sure I heard on Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story" series that to write that novel he actually commissioned a band of mercerizes to overthrow a dictatorship which is why it reads like a how-to book more than a novel.

Not this time. I know I've been to it, it's got a very dark and closed feeling to it. I honestly forget if I've been inside.

The highlight of this trip (January) was a collection of Bernini sculptures and paintings. Paintings were kinda meh but the sculptures, omg!

I think I did a temporary post of them, too.

Also, the height of my dabbling in art in various media is a mermaid I carved out of a block of wood. It took me six months and it's not that good. I walked around the body of Bernini's work and was staggered that a human could do all that in one lifetime.

Looked it up - umbrellas began to get popular in Western Europe in about 1750, but they were known throughout the middle east in antiquity, and I think the earliest found was in China, dating from the 4th century B.C. They have been charging for personal care such as help bathing, bathroom visits, etc. Anywhere between $375 and $425 per month. She has been evaluated regularly and from what they tell me the only thing listed to recommend this charge is a food allergy. An allergy that she monitors on her own.
What do you think are the chances we will receive a refund?
Anyone that has an elderly parent in assisted living or memory care needs to look very closely at what the charges are for their living arrangements. Also, review their meds. Had an issue with the hospital and the rehab facility after she broke her hip.
I'm pretty diligent about these things but missed the overcharge for 2 years. Not sure what the elderly do that do not have someone to watch out for them.

Bernini changed Western sculpture. He and Michelangelo sit together atop the altar of sculpture, IMO. I honestly cannot think of a third who even comes close to those two. Maybe Polykleitos or Praxiteles, but that's going waaaay back.

It's hard to describe art enough. but with sculpture even pictures don't help. With Bernini, he is one of those you really have to see and walk around. he designed them that way. I haven't yet seen him in person and I know I'm missing out.

I second the cadillac mountain sunset, assuming there are no clouds. (It's gonna get cold though, bring warmth.)

If the stupid construction is still happening on the main road right outside Bar Harbor, don't always trust your GPS. It took us on a 20 minute roundabout when 2 minutes would have sufficed.

330 Regarding Cape Cod.

The Cape consists of three bodies of water, the bay, the sound, and the ocean. If you visit the bay or the sound (that would be the parts inside the arm and below the arm) you will ask yourself what all the fuss is about.

The outside, the outer beach, confusingly called the lower Cape, is the Atlantic ocean stretch from Chatham at the elbow to Provincetown at the hand.

It's a national seashore. The best thing the federal government has ever done is to protect that stretch of sand. There is no development, no condos, no boardwalks, just the best beach in the world.

If you're willing to walk a couple miles from any of the access points you can have the prime beach all to yourself and, if you're lucky, your companion.

Provincetown is precious, mixed Portuguese fishermen and gays. Gays mean lots of art galleries and good restaurants. Chatham is quaint, pricey, and sort of the epitome of the Cape.

I have more if there are any specific requests.

Again, you can stay in Nickerson State Park for $25/night. The best campground is North of Highland, in Truro, for $45/night.

As of July 1, the construction on Rt 3 as you get close to Bar Harbor was still on. It was one way -- you can get into Bar Harbor on Rt 3. Getting out was detoured.
Best bet would be to go to the Acadia Nat Park Welcome center and use the free buses to go into Bar Harbor. They drop you off right in the middle of town where the shopping and restaurants are.

345 Comment above reminded me of the parking situation at the park. They'll tell you it gets crazy crowded, and maybe we just got lucky the week we were there, but we were at the park by 9am and had no problem getting a spot.

The beach in the park is great too, though the water is way too cold to go in. Some of the hikes around the beach are simple but very peaceful, especially if you go down onto the rocks by the ocean.

383 For the person going to Colonial Williamsburg, may I suggest a side trip to Jamestown? Every once in a while they have a behind-the-scenes tour led by the head archaeologist. But the site is fantastic.

And the traffic - bad all the time. There is a ferry to Boston from the Cape, may be worth doing that. Once you are in the city you can walk everywhere. If you get tired the subway service is pretty good also.

Worked in the city for a number of years and over lunch could walk from the waterfront to (one of) the Backbay, financial district, Chinatown, North End, and get back within an hour.

The deep state people and the media are all behaving like they are invulnerable. If Civil War 2.0 goes hot I predict that they are going to find out that their assumption that they are bullet proof was false. I would like to point out that shooting any of these people now would be murder - which would be against both God's law and man's. However, if they were to become casualties of war, oh well.

In other words - don't put any names on any of your bullets, but I do recommend that you practice your marksmanship and own a felt tip pen.
