There is one and only one social responsibility of business–to use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud.

-- Milton Friedman
***

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

-- Karl Marx
***

This is a war, an ideological and spiritual one, for the minds and souls of America. It's Enlightenment reason vs. Postmodern subjectivism. It's a belief in right and wrong, and a desire to cleave to the right, versus a rejection of good and evil, which produces nothing but servants of evil.

You win a war by destroying the enemy until they stop fighting and surrender. We win this war by destroying their false, craven, self-contradictory ideology and soundly mocking their faux-piety at every opportunity.

If we lose the ideological and spiritual war to these forces of evil, the struggle that follows will be far, far worse - will it will be for life itself, because these people are the allies of death and show it every time they gain power.

-- Cato the Rebel Without a Party
***

Wherever they burn books they will also, in the end, burn human beings.

-- Heinrich Heine

Make no mistake, they are book burners, disguised as "anti-fascists" and "anti-hate-speech warriors," and "Moms against 3D Printed Guns" and a host of other pseudonyms for the apparatchiks of a police state.

But enough politics for one night...here are some fun things I have put together in lieu of actual content. Yeah, Misanthropic Humanitarian spoils the crap out of you, but The Dildo is here to drag you back to earth!

In case any of you actually read it, I have decided to be combative and inflammatory, and I am curious how long it will take for Twitter to marginalize me or just cancel my account. 92 Some of you have likely read the article about the young Chinese woman whose life was destroyed by employees of Vice magazine, including Sarah Jeong. She has a YouTube channel in which she shows a pretty Chinese woman (namely herself) solving various engineering problems.

For instance, here she is designing a cyberpunk outfit that generates a strobe effect through her breast implants.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a929IRtg4YU

It's a neat effect, and, well, there's a reason that she picked the handle "Sexy Cyborg".

(a quick NSFW note - early in the video, she shows where she got the original idea; namely, there's a short segment of a topless camgirl with censored nipples)

I wish I coulda kept the dealer I had at the first table I was at in that tournament. In the first hand, I busted two other players (tripling my starting stack) with 4 aces against 2 different full houses, and then in the next 5 hands I busted one more and won 4 out of the 5 hands. They broke the table up before it even got around once. After that it was all downhill though.

182 That classic "opiate of the masses" quote that always gets trotted out is really not explicitly all that anti-Religion.

It's actually pretty damn accurate coming from that old piece of shit.

Religious Suffering *is* all those things he states, precisely because there is Sin in the world. But Marx makes the lazy, half-witted jump from that to conflating the Sin in the world with the "sin" of Capitalism, et cetera, et cetera, and once the Workers are liberated and in control of their destinies, Religion will no longer be necessary and shall wither away.

He's still a piece of shit, but he's technically not wrong about the premise of this particular argument.

He just takes a perfectly valid premise and mangles it into an incomprehensible glop of evil and stupidity. You know, like every other facet of human endeavor he focuses his five-year-old-disposable-razor-like wit upon.

OH-12 2018 (special)
Balderson (R): 101,574 (50.2%)
O'Connor (D): 99,820 (49.3%)

In 2016, Tiberi won every county in the district easily. In 2018, O'Connor carried the most populous county 2:1 and Balderson narrowly the next most populous counties while easily winning the rural parts of the district.

O'Connor got 89% of the 2016 DEM vote from 2016, Balderson got 40% of the GOP vote from 2016.

It's truly amazing what short-run runs of luck can do.

Once upon a time, I was invited to a free invitation-only poker tournament at Harrah's in Vegas. Mostly, it was a promotion to bring table and slot players to stay in Vegas for a few days.

The first day was a freeze-out, with regular tournament Holdem the second day. (Each table starts with ten players. As players at the table are eliminated, the seats remain empty until two players are left - you stay at your starting table until two are left. The remaining 20% of players then all start day two with a new set of chips.)

To get to the point, at my table was a player who not only had never played Texas Holdem before, but probably never played poker before.

He eliminated six of the ten players. He never raised, never folded, just called.

I eliminated him with pocket kings versus his A7. After he left the table, one of the guys he had eliminated came back to the table to thank me for knocking him out.

Strangest thing I have ever seen at a poker table.

The judge is apparently not happy with the prosecution, although he's generally trying to keep the extent of the unhappiness from the jurors (smart move; minimizes the chance of an appeals court declaring a mistrial due to the judge). On the way home this evening, the newsradio quoted a WaPo reporter who said that the judge kept hammering the prosecutor, although he (the judge) toned it down when in front of the jury versus when the jury wasn't present.

The reporter was making a note of it because apparently Federal judges tend to be much more deferential toward prosecutors.

I decide to leave up $300 but can't find a rack.

415 387 Evening Horde. I don't think we've seen the last of this Ohio election since it was close enough for the mail-in/provisional ballots to make a difference. Ah well. And people, do we need a better reminder than this to get off the couch and vote in November?

388 So the Ohio race is going to take weeks to figure out?
Posted by: redridinghood

According to an article I just read, that's not true: the final totals were

50.2% Troy Balderson GOP 101574
49.3% Danny O'Connor Dem 99820

... so the difference between them is 1,754 votes. BUT, there are only 600 mail-in votes yet to be counted. So he can't lose. And, there's only a recount if second place is within .5%, but here O'Connor is .9% back. So, no recount either.

Maybe I misread the article, but it also said the Balderson just gave a victory speech. so there's that.

459 Learned something interesting today.

The China market is a big deal for movies due to the large population of potential viewers there. It turns out that Disney's latest won't be showing in that country, as it got banned there before it was even released.

"Christopher Robin" is about what happens when Winnie the Pooh and his friends track down a much older Christopher Robin. Apparently Xi Jinping, the leader of China, has been getting a lot of negative comparisons with Pooh. For instance, people will take photos of Xi Jinping with other world leaders, and replace everyone in the picture with Pooh and his friends. Xi Jinping is always represented by Pooh (in one picture, Obama was represented by Tigger; another picture had Abe represented by Eeyore). So China being fascist as it is, Xi has arbitrarily banned anything and everything Pooh.

And that includes the new Disney movie.

I find that amusing.

Driving home tonight, a fawn ran across the road left-to-right, far enough ahead I cold easily slow down.

Suddenly, he decides to dash back across the road, right in front of us. If I'd been going any speed at all at that point, it would've been bad. Instead, we just stopped and got to see the little critter up close in the headlights.

Hope he learned a lesson.

And to finish on the Manafort stuff, anyone interested really should look at Techno Fog's daily wrap-up today. IF Lancelot is correct, and intent is an element of the crime to prove a criminal tax violation, and IF Gates is *the* star witness for the prosecution in proving intent, and IF I'm not missing a lot (which is quite likely, since I don't know the full set of facts for the case, or how such trials typically go), then ..... seems Mueller may have a situation on his hands.

Techno Fog his own self has opined that the documentary case against Manafort is overwhelming, so I don't think he's shading his analysis here. But I'm not sure of that either. But Gates today comes off as a serial, relentless criminal, fraudster, and liar, who can't keep his story straight even on the stand. Time will tell, but I wonder if this case is the trainwreck it appears to the very untrained eye.

Posted by: rickl

Human eyes are close together, and have receptors clustered in a small region (the fovea). So we have very good depth perception, and great resolution in what we focus on. But poorer resolution everywhere else (peripheral vision).

Deer eyes are further apart, and have receptors in a wide band. They more-or-less see everywhere at once. But have crappy depth perception and no real ability to focus on something. All their vision is peripheral vision.

And thus, no ability to "look away" from a bright light to prevent being dazzled.

(They have terrible color vision outside of blues and greens, too; thus blaze-orange hunting camo.)

So, they're unlikely to stop playing chicken with cars, especially at night, since they don't realize they're doing it.

Though my real interest remains the Flynn case (which I *still* don't understand) - as it seems to have tantalizing possibilities of felonious misconduct by such stellar American public servants as Strzok and Yates (how TF do sub-mediocrities of this intellectual and character level advance beyond the most menial positions?).

570 once found a "Dukakis-Bush Debate '88!" t-shirt in a thrift store. I always wear it on election day just to freak everyone out. It's right on the cusp of being really far in the past but maybe still close enough in the past that someone might think I'm confused about what year it is and am voting for Dukakis.

I love freaking people out.

574 And rickl, with the perfect follow-on comment.

It is amazing.

In 2008, there was a British historian who had an interesting commentary on Palin. As all the swells and dumb "educated" and Beltway-mindset sorts were venting their ugliness and bigotry about her, this guy - pretty sure he was Oxbridge, "legit", serious academic - was positively celebrating her existence as a VP candidate. He gushed about how only in the US, the most powerful and successful country on earth, could a figure like this arise - a true grass-roots citizen-become-politician, not at all of the political class. He wasn't endorsing her or her stances, just her quintessential and unique American-ness, an actual outsider who was within reach of national leadership.

Trump - um, a *slightly* different sort, with a different path - is nonetheless the outsider who actually made it to the top.

Wow -- you've never heard of the Epoch Times? Where I live, they have newspaper boxes in every corner. Seriously.

The Epoch Times is a very odd duck. It started out as the newsletter for Falun Gong, the weird philosophy/martial art/religion that emerged in China in the '80s as the main anti-communist theory in the country. As the number of its adherents grew exponentially, the Chinese government branded it a "cult," and banned it, and executed many of its leaders. But that only made it go underground. The Epoch Times then grew even bigger and evolved into the primary Chinese anti-communist news source for a general audience, and it no longer strictly about Falun Gong.

Not sure of the details, but I think the Epoch Times is now published in the US.

Being so staunchly anti-communist, the paper is naturally pro-American, and in recent years I assume pro-Trump too. Sometimes, the only true reporting coming out of China can be found in the Epoch Times.

Overseas Chinese love the Epoch Times, for getting the "real" news about their forlorn homeland. The ChiCom government hates it with a passion and regards it as enemy #1.

Around here in SF, you see it everywhere. They even have staffed booths in heavy Chinese areas, handing out free copies.

591 My view of the special elections since 2016 are as follows:

The Democrats have been pulling out all the stops on these elections because they want it to appear that they are strong and motivated so they are blowing through cash as fast as possible to achieve the wins.

Originally they had attempted to nationalize these special elections, but several times that wound up backfiring on them because it had the effect of informing people that aren't tuned into all the politics of their area that there was an election for them to vote in they might have missed.

Because of those backfires, they have taken to going back to just pumping money in without going for the major promotion like CNN pimping a "Democrat has a great chance of winning a district that went heavily for Trump!"

Because these have been isolated they can focus pretty strongly on each of these elections.

Well November is coming soon and people aren't going to be caught off guard that there's an election, and they have to cover them all and not just pinpoint targets.

Hmm...

Might be worth checking into.

As for the article itself, it's always hard reading into exactly what's going on in China. It's a big country, after all. Taking an opinion poll in Shanghai and claiming it represents the country is a lot like taking an opinion poll in Los Angeles and claiming that represents the views of the citizens of the US. Further, the Chinese government does its best to suppress anything that might make it look bad.

Having said that, I read something just within the last few days (over on Instapundit, I think) that said that Trump's tariffs have Xi Jinping in a very tight spot right now. Xi is essentially a dictator, and that means that the buck stops with him. If the nation does well, then he gets the credit. If the nation doesn't do well, then he gets the blame. He can't pass the buck. The goodwill that exists toward the Communist Party (which is more fascist than communist these days, mind you) is there because the PRC has enjoyed tremendous economic prosperity over the last few decades. Trump's tariffs threaten that. And if Trump doesn't back down, then Xi has two choices. His first choice, obviously, is to get into a long-term trade war with the US. Since the US and China engage in tremendous amounts of trade, this will badly hurt the Chinese economy, making the population restless and upset and Xi. The second choice is to cave to Trump, and cut a deal of some sort to end the tariffs and mitigate the long-term damage. But this will make Xi look weak in the eyes of his countrymen.

From what I've seen of Trump, he's not likely to cave. So Xi's probably having some sleepless nights right now.

Wow, that's a lot of full-frontal nudity for YouTube! I'm surprised they let it stay online.

I just finished watching an anime myself -- "Your Name," a weird time-travel/teen romance mashup, where a boy in Tokyo and a girl in a small town keep switching bodies -- even though they live in different years! So their souls are traveling through time, from body to body. When their bodies are switched, the boy keeps fondling his own boobs, fascinated by them.

Eventually, there's a big disaster crisis they must avert, and they need to communicate through the years to save the girl's life! And needless to say, they fall in love, even though they can never meet.

Anyway, pretty good for an anime -- perhaps a bit too soap-opera-y and not enough time-travel-y for my tastes, but it was made for a Japanese teenage girl audience, so my opinions don't matter.

The really weird part was they recorded the Jpop soundtrack with English lyrics! Never heard that before.

Anyway, here's the link, in case anyone's interested:

--------------------

As I noted above, a reporter with the WaPo noted that the judge has been unusually harsh with the prosecutor. The judge has done his best to shield it from the jury, but there have apparently still been some times when the jury's present that the judge has found fault with the prosecutor. He just phrases it in a nicer fashion when the jury's around.

601 According to Johnson County KS election commiosioner, the glacial reporting of votes tonight is being blamed on "thumb drives loading real slowly": yjat's right, thumb drives. Whcih usually (he says) load in a second or less, but tonight are taking over a minute each.

Each of the 196 voter locations has a thumb drive with the voter data on it, and they are ALL loading 60-80 times more slowly tonight than they are supposed to.

Uh-huh. Sure. JoCo is extrememly GOP-ey, even never-trumpy; I'm afraid this bodes poorly for Kris Kolbach (whom they hate because he took on Planned Parenthood and is pro-Wall and is otherwise icky.)

If you like that sort of story, that's all Makoto Shinkai tells. Though every new movie refines it a bit more.

His first "big" production, Voices of a Distant Star, became famous for the one-man-band nature of it.

He wrote the story, did 100% of the artwork and animation, both drawn and computerized, and voice-acted the male lead.

His wife acted the female lead. There was one other voice actor, and one friend of his did all the music. The one song with lyrics is sung in English. (OK, I guess the singer was a different person, too.)

But to put together a whole animated movie with basically 5 people, in 2002, was pretty cool.

Just after midnight, on the road home, I was approaching the little town of Linden, Alberta, and saw a big white shaggy dog on the center line of the highway. Managed to slow and pull to the right, and missed it, and as I went past, I saw it was no dog, but a shaggy white Shetland pony. Ponies shouldn't be running around loose on 60 mph highways. I turned around and went back to look for it, and there was no sign of it. Ghost pony!

652 Alex Jones really does have the mother of all lawsuits to smack all of these media entities.

Since they all acted in concert at the behest and instigation of "news" outlets he can hit all of these companies with slander, libel, tortious interference, restraint of trade and conspiracy to name a few.

He should seek punitive judgments in the billions.

And if these companies start widening their net to unperson other conservatives then you can also sue them together as a class as well.

These media companies need to be regulated as utilities and public accommodations.

Or eminent domain them and make public their IP and algorithms.

660 @656
Uber has for me been a paradigm shift for getting from point A to B when I'm traveling.
In cities that have it I no longer rent a car as the expenses and convenience supersede that of a rental car.

I used to do a lot of work at South Bend at Notre Dame before Uber I rented a car once Uber came to SB i never rented a car again and saved a bundle of money.

I take an Uber when I need to deliver stuff to and from site in NYC where before I either had to use a rented car or van.

It really is a game changer for average citizen which is why powerful interests want to kill it.

Like any new business it has had growing pains, the company was founded in 2009 but really only hit the field in 2011, 2012, so it's only really been what we know as Uber for less than 8 years and has seen it's growth explode as it became more popular and has from it's inception had power interests arrayed against it.

731 Today is the first day in the rest of your life without YT, Gooble, and Fakebook. You can live without them and it won't hurt, I promise.

732 I have very specific tastes that involve Russians, onions, and beer. But mostly beer.

Beer I could help with. I'm no expert, but I do know my favorite, and that's the next one

Posted by: Bruce at August 08, 2018 07:33 AM (8ikIW)

733 And I see that Kris Kobach pulled off a win after all.

How did the rest of Trump endorsements go?

734 Only reason I still have Gmail is so my damned Android phone will keep the apps running.

I fvcking loathe goggle and their spying.

735 I've got a customer that insists on using gmail for their company email. They are pretty conservative and I have told them that gooble is spying on them but they don't seem to care. How do you turn someone like that?

736 Vice News posted a video report yesterday in which correspondent Dexter Thomas claims to have discovered a secret strategy used by Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson to MAKE Antifa look bad. What is the secret strategy? Gibson shows up, gets attacked, and refuses to fight back.

740 Download their last months worth of email headers as an example of what is available, without even trying. Then show them that there are alternatives. And finally sell them a solution. Wind for you and win for the customer.

Huzzaah! A nail biter.

And that's with an all-out effort by the GOPe here. I had three robo-calls from Bob Dole for Colyer. Bob Dole! Hey the 80's called.

In the KS general he should do better. There are some voting areas with zero Dems.

If you are up to it I'd love to meet. I'll be there for a week. I'm really not THAT freaky.

Don't know. Waiting for J.J. to tell me. The race in Ohio was very close. Don't know if it's been called yet.

745 Chores start early.

Have a wonderful day, everyone.

I'm chuffed that Kobach won. He is a good man. But boy does he like to talk.

746 But boy does he like to talk.

Which puts him ahead of Balderson.

Posted by: Grump928(c) at August 08, 2018 07:45 AM (yQpMk)

747 Troy Balderson (R) has 50.2 percent of the vote with 100% of precincts in, compared to 49.3 percent for Danny O'Connor (D). There are still 3,300 provisional ballots and some more absentee ballots outstanding.

That's not entirely comforting, tbh.

A politician who doesn't talk all the time might be a blessing.

749 They can never find proof and they'll keep moving the goalposts. But, to them, it explains why they lost.

Rush has said repeatedly that the real threat here is that this is establishing a precedent for the larger population to question the results of any and all elections that don't turn out like a) the polls, b) the liberal pundits, c) the exit polls, and d) Democrat expectations said they would!

Posted by: Cyrillic Hrothgar at August 08, 2018 07:48 AM (n9EOP)

750 That Broward County article did not mention the name of the judge they went to. We know that county is a Democrat Hell but are the judges too. If it is a local judge that would be yes, if it is a federal judge then its a maybe.
