Robin Hood

So, let's talk about a movie no one remembers because it was pretty derisively received by critics and largely ignored by audiences: Ridley Scott's Robin Hood!

I can feel the excitement!

I bring it up because I think that when trying to talk about a director's work, it's a bit easier to focus on something that isn't universally considered great. Being able to balance between things that a director did well in a particular picture with things that he did not do well in that same picture provides a great view of what the man creates as an artist.

I am, of course, a Ridley Scott fanboy, but I don't love everything he's ever made. In fact, one of his movies that's most often held up as a jewel of his career (Gladiator) I find boring. I overall genuinely think that he's one of the most talented filmmakers working today. With that being said, let's dive into one of his more recent historical epics that I feel was unfairly maligned upon its release.

Theme

When thinking of the theme of the Robin Hood story in general, it usually gets boiled down to "Steal from the Rich and Give to the Poor", which I find simplistic and easily used to justify a terrible morality. Looking at previous incarnations of the Robin Hood tale on the silver screen (in particular the Errol Flynn starring The Adventures of Robin Hood), there's usually a dramatic emphasis on freedom from oppression, but through having the right king in charge. Richard is seen as the savior that England is waiting upon to free the people from the tyranny of John. The story itself is traditionally very pro-monarchy.

Ridley Scott's movie is decidedly not that. Richard isn't some great man sneaking his way home, he's a violent, vengeful drunk trying to pillage French castles to pay for his return home from the Crusades. I think John comes off a bit better in this version than normal since he's not usurping the thrown, he genuinely ascends to it through Richard's death. The third monarch in the movie, Philip of France, is trying to incite a revolt in England in order to make the country much more ripe for invasion. What I came away from with this movie the first time I saw it was how decidedly anti-monarchical it was, and it had been directed by a Knight of England, no less.

That negative depiction of kings is important to the thematic core of the film. Robin isn't a nobleman brought to action because his land was stolen by a usurper king, fighting to return the rightful king so he can, implicitly, get all of his stuff back. No, Robin is a commoner fighting for "liberty by law".

The key comes in the quote that comes up frequently throughout the movie, "Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions." It's written on the hilt of the sword that Robin takes back to Nottingham, and it was a line written by Robin's father. It was the idea that lambs (the common people) should continue to fight against oppression (kings) until they become lions themselves (self governance).

Commoner vs. Nobleman

One of the complaints with the film when it originally came out was that it overcomplicated and changed the origin of Robin. He starts the movie as Robin Longstride, a common archer in the king's army returning from the Holy Land. Robert Loxley is an advisor and friend to Richard who is tasked with returning the king's crown upon his death. Robert dies en route, and Robin takes up the mantle selfishly. He disguises himself and his band of merry men as knights, bound for England with the crown and all the loot they can carry, making their home country wealthy men. Robert's dying words, though, get a promise from Robin to return Robert's sword to his father. Robin, of course, takes up the task, and that is how he gets to Nottingham and meets Marian Loxley.

That does seem overcomplicated, especially when compared to the simplicity of the original tellings, but I think it adds a new dimension to the story.

No longer the nobleman fighting for his stuff, he's a commoner fighting for the basic rights that every man deserves. This outlook really comes to its culmination at a speech in Barnsdale. King John is trying his poorly best to head off a rebellion of the barons when Robin gives the below speech:

John has a line that I consider key: "A castle for every man?" Take that single line out and think about it. It's the perfect distillation of the "Take from the Rich and Give to the Poor" mentality. He's asking Robin if that's what he wants directly. Robin responds with, "In England, every man's home is his castle." Robin isn't asking for more stuff, he's asking for freedom.

It's a much better message overall, and it's a much more mature take on the Robin Hood legend.

Look

If it's a Ridley Scott movie, so it's going to look good. Robin Hood is no exception.

All of his historical movies share a gritty, grimy, but painterly and polished look that I simply love. They are all expensive, and they look like so much of the budget goes into costumes, sets, and smoke machines instead of digital effects (there's plenty of that too, to be sure).

I couldn't tell you how much of that above shot it real or digital, but it's so dense with texture and visual information.

Just look at the detail and classical framing that provides clear spatial relationships and depth of field. Look at how big everything looks so easily.

How good Ridley Scott's movies look are one of the reasons that I always find something to enjoy about them.

Not Perfect

I really like this take on the Robin Hood tale overall, but the movie is not without its flaws. One of the best parts of the movie is also one of its worst: Marion Loxley. Marion in this movie is a woman who married her husband just to see him leave for the Crusades within a week of their wedding. She's been living with Sir Walter Loxley, her father in law, ever since, negotiating a hard life under a massive tax burden from the state to fund the Crusade with a few hard years on their harvest and corrupt local officials (in particular from the sheriff, of course). She's become very independent, especially after Walter was struck blind, leaving the running of the estate to her. Her interactions with Robin when he arrives bearing her husband's identity are fun.

But then the movie tries to make her into an action star, and it's just…ridiculous.

A quick comment on the difference between the theatrical and unrated cuts. The single largest addition to the unrated cut of the movie is to add more to the subplot about the children of Nottingham who have run away from home and become pillagers living in Sherwood Forest (an obvious first step towards the Merry Men). In the theatrical cut, they appear once in the beginning, get referenced a few times, and then, almost inexplicably, show up for the final battle against the invading French army with Marion riding a steed in full armor leading them. The unrated cut just adds more scenes around these kids, but their addition to the final battle is still inexplicable.

Marion's addition to the final battle could have been so easily cut out of the end result by simply pulling the shots she's in. She's not integral to how the battle plays out at all. All of that makes me think that some producer forced Scott to include Marion in battle, and he said, "Fine, if I have to do it, she'll be useless and her addition will be funny at best."

So, why?

Why bring up Robin Hood at all? A couple of reasons. The first is that I do think it's underappreciated. It's not perfect, but it's smarter than people insist.

Roger Ebert taught me how to watch movies, and one of his favorites was The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn. He once wrote that on good days his favorite movie was Citizen Kane, but on bad days it was The Adventures of Robin Hood because of its ability to cheer him up. That affection for the "original" really colored his viewing of Ridley Scott's take. He insisted that the tale of Robin Hood should be fun and the fact that the 2010 movie wasn't fun meant that it wasn't good. We're all human, and I think that Ebert's affection for the Errol Flynn version blinded him to the qualities that are actually to be found here.

The second reason I bring it up is to try and convince a few of you to check it out. Just remember, watch the theatrical version, it's still not perfect, but it's got a wonderfully mature message about the common people, the preference of self-governance to dictatorial rule, and the general inappropriateness of the rule of kings.

And I done seen a few movies.

Seriously, it's amazing how movies affect viewers so differently. I've never heard of any single movie that was 100% loved by everyone.

nevertheless, not kidding about Gladiator. I friggin' love that movie.

What's weird to me is that I truly am a Ridley Scott fanboi, and I feel so cold about Gladiator, which everyone seems to love. And then I turn around and appreciate both Robin Hood and Kingdom of Heaven so much more than just about the rest of the planet.

20 Gladiator is in my Top 10.

The Battle of Zama sequence is superb. There's this scene where Russell Crowe comes galloping around the wreckage on a horse and someone tosses him a sword. He catches it by the handle effortlessly, without even glancing at it as he goes galloping past. It's so cool.

21 Dressing up a bad movie does it no justice, and it diminishes the credibility of the reviewer. It's much better to just acknowledge that the movie was bad while noting that you liked it anyway, as that keeps credibility intact.

Scott's Robin Hood was a bad movie.

Robin Hood-related: In college we had movie nights organized by someone and held in classroom ampitheaters. One of the themes was that they'd show a Bugs Bunny short in front of the movie.

When they showed the Errol Flynn Robin Hood they started with the Bugs Bunny one. I still hear "Welcome to Shoi-Wood" when I see Errol Flynn.

There was a Robin Hood spoof in the 80s with George Segal as Robin Hood. Morgan Fairchild played Maid Marian and Tom Baker played Sir Guy de Gisbourne. She's going to be married off and goes on a long rant about being an independent woman and will make her own choices. Baker leans towards her and says, "My dear, this is the 12th Century. Go find a white dress."

As for "Men in Tights," very much not my favorite Mel Brooks movie. The editing was sometimes clunky, and some of the joke setups seemed forced.

But the Kevin Costner Robin Hood had the BEST Sheriff of Nottingham.. Alan Rickman.

Rest of the cast was mediocre at best... but he shined.

Perhaps "I Claudius" spoiled me forever on the genre; it is so far above almost any other Roman period piece ever down that everything else fails by comparison.

The theatrical posters might as well said "Ridley Scott: Starring Hans Zimmer" for how rote tick-the-boxes it was.

I mean this in the very best way possible, without a hint of derision. It's fun as hell to watch and it checks every one of the Ridley Scott/Hans Zimmer boxes with a huge chisel-tip red marker.

Rilly? His death scene was excruciating. I think he purposely played it huge, wondering if the director would tell him to tone it down a notch. Director instead hollered "Cut! Print! Brilliant!"

53 I am on the tail end of a cold and so have just sat inside today watching movies, some of which were direct to video and it struck me that the problem with the bad low budget files is the pacing. So many are so sloooow. As though they want to stretch the content out to make a short film into a feature length movie. The modern tech lets more people make movies, but you have a lot of chaff in with the undiscovered gold.

I haven't seen Titanic, Avatar, or any of the Star Wars movies besides the original trilogy and the first prequel. I'm the same way now, I don't care whether I see any of them or not, but it's gone from apathy and disinterest to the perverse pride of being That Guy.

63 Lion in Winter is on my top 10 list - the script is magnificent, and every part is played by someone stellar.

The best part is watching O'Toole and Hepburn each try to steal the scene in every scene they're in together, always working to upstage the other one - and when you read the history of Henry II and Eleanor, it's easy to believe that's exactly how the originals acted whenever they were around each other.

SUBJECT : Re-boot of MARY POPPINS

After watching the original 1964 movie once I know how we could improve this beloved children's classic and make it relevant for today's theatergoers.

The color scheme must be grey. Most of the film will take place at night. It is still a period piece but we update it slightly. It now takes place during the bombing of London in World War II. Let's take some creative historical license and blow up Big Ben and the Parliament building. We have the means to do that in a very cool way. To punctuate the moment cut to an Englishman saying SuperFUCKINGcalifragilisticexpialidocious!, as a double-decker bus almost decapitates him. We can still say two fucks and keep our PG-13.

Bert, the street performer, is a loner with a dark past. Dick Van Dyke was fine for his day but I see Steve Buscemi. He should always be an ominous presence. He himself was abused as a child and we must always be afraid when he is around children. His fellow street people are all damaged due to the horrors of World War I. There might be some comedy in seeing them act silly as long as we understand it is because they are deeply traumatized.

Take us out of the reality of innocent people being slaughtered is counterproductive. Modern children don't want fuzzy bedtime stories. They want to be scared shitless. Let's do that for three hours.

Mary Poppins arrives. She too has a dark past. Sexual abuse and forced into prostitution has caused her mind to snap. Her sunny optimistic disposition is really psychotic repression. She thought she was applying for position of madame not nanny. but to avoid a savage beating from her pimp she takes the job.

Julie Andrews was serviceable for the time. But now we need a warrior. Casting suggestion: Katee Sackhoff as Mary Poppins. The kids take to her right away. She still has the magic bag filled with wonders that they've never seen. But those wonders are dildos and handcuff and cock rings. The kids play with them. We get our heart, our comedy, and our bonding. If time allows, Bert comes over and teaches them how to play doctor. Keep some of the familiar conventions but justify them.

The floating tea party is the result of the children being drugged. The dancing penguins is a bad acid trip. I have some leftover designs for the Penguin in DARK KNIGHT. We can use those. Keep the scene where Mary takes the kids to the bank to see their disinterested banker father (who has a dark past, by the way) and it turns into chaos. But let the chaos be a bank robbery. Let the children be held hostage. Let their father learn to appreciate his children by seeing guns to their heads. Let Mary impale one of the robbers with her umbrella. Let it go right through him. This starts a gun battle. One of the children dies. That will get the dad's attention to really love the remaining ones. Let the dead child be his favorite. That ups the anguish -- always a crowd pleaser.

Eventually the family's home is bombed so there's no further need for a nanny. Mary moves on thus setting up the franchise for sequels. I have some ideas for how she can clash with Mr. Belvedere but I'll save those for MP2: THE WAR OF THE APRONS. As always, these recommendations are non-debatable. Please confirm their brilliance at your earliest convenience so I can get the wardrobe people working on Mary's armored house dress.

70 My biggest gripe with the Errol Flynn Robin Hood is how they butchered history with the return of Richard The Lionheart from the crusades. I realize that historical accuracy has never been maintained in many movies but that one was so far out it was absurd.

Richard never did return from the crusades and he died in France. He didn't even speak English.

I wouldn't guess at the term, but I would guess part of it is the time between movies. You've got almost 20 years between the Star Wars Trilogies.

Add in that you have Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, and Legolas completely bridging the connection to LOTR and the Hobbit.

157 Those of us that grew up with the Errol Flynn version are partial to that swashbuckling, colorful type of portrayal. I guess I am in Ebert's generation on this.

Scott's version is good.. but it is dark and dismal - as it would be in those times! But reality is not always as entertaining.
The Adventures of Robin Hood played here on Chicago local TV (WGN - Family Classics series every Sunday afternoon) every year for many decades.. I grew up watching it as did my kids.. always a delight!
The Kevin Costner version is good as well, if for no other reason than Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

It seems almost like an old-fashioned adventure epic, were it not for the gruesome things that happen to Burton and Speke, to include Burton taking a spear through the face, Speke being tied down and stabbed repeatedly with a spear, a bug crawling into his ear and driving him so mad he punctures an eardrum trying to kill it, and most horrifying of all, Burton twists his ankle walking over rocks (I am always twisting my ankle and winced in sympathy).

Not a movie, but "The Returned" ("Les Revenants") is a flippin' good series that has probably been mentioned around here before. It gets compared to "Twin Peaks" a lot, for what that's worth, and it's one of those where the setting is almost a character itself. Brilliant soundtrack, too. There was a shot-for-shot US remake, but I never saw that, the original is in French with English subtitles on Netflix (or was the last time I had an active subscription). I only saw the first season, but I would absolutely recommend it; if you're the kind of person who likes that kind of show then it's the kind of show that you would like.

I was surprised Ridley Scott could direct (and John Logan could write ) such a disappointing movie. Too much of the plot depends on the Fassbender bots imho. It's not an interesting character.

There was one OK set piece involving trying to shoot alien off of transport while flying just above the planet surface. And I kind of liked Danny McBride in a dramatic role. Otherwise, meh.

Sorry, I found Scott's Robin Hood to be boring. It took herculean effort to make it to the end credits.

Gladiator is somewhat overrated, but a lot of fun to watch. Like Scott decided that he was actually going to ENTERTAIN the audience.

All too often, filmmakers forget that the most important job they have is to entertain. They forget that film's origins are in the penny arcade, the carnival peep show. And the first two films that truly define the narrative film are genre films (sci fi and a western).

215 I saw a good movie this week -- here's the wiki blurb:

Predestination is a 2014 Australian science fiction thriller film written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, and Noah Taylor, and is based on the short story "-All You Zombies-" by Robert A. Heinlein.

It's a fairly low budget film, with few special effects. It's a time travel tale, and supposedly (since I don't recall reading it) follows the short story closely. I didn't know it was an RAH story until the closing credits.

Two takeaways from it -- It has a unique take on time travel (with lots of twists), and it isn't a remake of anything. Character development is splendid.

Two thumbs up. Rotten Tomato score of 84% agrees.

I can buy Brienne of Tarth, more in the book than the movie, but not that little waif.

I just don't see the point of watching a movie that's going to piss me off. It's why I avoided Solo and Antman and the Wasp....I just did NOT like the Wasp character in the first movie. Why take the risk? I have other hobbies, other movies.

They're both mine.

I see the 4 and 5 start ratings as reflecting different things.

The 5 star is more about a purely emotional reaction.

The 4 star is more of a gauge of artistic quality.

There's a blur between them, but I find the distinction useful, mostly for those things that fall in between good and bad.

A 3/5 movie, I call okay, but I still find worth in it. However that seems to me to put a more positive spin than a 2/4 rating like I would usually give the same movie.

245 215 I saw a good movie this week -- here's the wiki blurb:

Predestination is a 2014 Australian science fiction thriller film written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, and Noah Taylor, and is based on the short story "-All You Zombies-" by Robert A. Heinlein.

It's a fairly low budget film, with few special effects. It's a time travel tale, and supposedly (since I don't recall reading it) follows the short story closely. I didn't know it was an RAH story until the closing credits.

Two takeaways from it -- It has a unique take on time travel (with lots of twists), and it isn't a remake of anything. Character development is splendid.

Two thumbs up. Rotten Tomato score of 84% agrees.

I would like to point out that the LL murderer wore a bowtie. In the other movie, the guy who was betraying his family for a criminal, sometimes wore a bowtie and other times a necktie.

I always say never trust a guy in a bowtie.

Now, I fell asleep before either movie finished, but not before I also read up on the gruesome story of the Papin Sisters. Then, I fell asleep. Though I don't remember what I dreamed, I'm pretty sure it was awful based on my mood when I woke up.

Never heard of the Papin Sisters before. Sometimes I curse you PBS. This is one of those times.

I will watch just about anything that puts the protagonist in a kind of self-perpetuating purgatory of surreal impossibility and absurd naked terror where everything is just perfectly fine except it's all subtly wrong, which is probably why Jacob's Ladder is perennially one of my top five all-time favorites ever. I always thought it would be fascinating and exciting to be caught in that kind of inescapable twilight world between rational reality and something disturbingly wrong, but it turns out it's not really that fun at all and you watch the movies and think "first thing I'd do is this" but when it really happens to you, you can't find your ass with both hands.

I'm currently reading a novel with the same theme. In Praetorian: The Great Game, our hero is an ordinary soldier who stumbles across a barbarian ambush and saves the praetor's life and is thus elevated to a praetorian by Marcus Aurelius himself moments before Aurelius' death. He then allies himself with Commodus, who is (so far) presented much more favorably than he was in Gladiator. I'm less than 1/4 way through but I'm quite enjoying it so far.

(Autocucumber wants to change Gladiator to Radiator. Makes me hot under the collar.)

A bullet knocks off the control rod thingie that hooks onto the thingie that controls the angle at which the blades meet the air so the choppers knows whether to go up or down or left or right. So the chopper is bouncing around like an eighteen year old on a Tijuana whore. So the Rock crawls out and fixes the problem not only in midair, not only while the chopper is bucking like a rodeo bull, not only while the bad guys are gunning for them, but also while they're flying over mutant killer rhinos. So my question is, does this happen often?

I see the 4 and 5 start ratings as reflecting different things.

The 5 star is more about a purely emotional reaction.

The 4 star is more of a gauge of artistic quality.

There's a blur between them, but I find the distinction useful, mostly for those things that fall in between good and bad.

A 3/5 movie, I call okay, but I still find worth in it. However that seems to me to put a more positive spin than a 2/4 rating like I would usually give the same movie.

I love it when that kind of thing crops up in noir, where no matter how hard the protagonist tries to move on or resolve the problem, he keeps being pushed back to square one. Example: Red Rock West. Nick Cage steals money meant for a hit man (by mistaken identity), but every time he tries to skip town, something happens to pull him back. All ends in tears.

367 I love it when that kind of thing crops up in noir, where no matter how hard the protagonist tries to move on or resolve the problem, he keeps being pushed back to square one. Example: Red Rock West. Nick Cage steals money meant for a hit man (by mistaken identity), but every time he tries to skip town, something happens to pull him back. All ends in tears.

Heh. That was the other example I considered, it's one of my favorites. Out of the Past is the better film by far, but I went with RRW because it's more surreal and darkly humorous when Cage keeps finding himself back in Red Rock.

Two things I liked about The Swimmer. One was Burt Landcaster. Two was it showed just how shallow and empty the lives of the Californians were. It wasn't an attack on suburbia itself, rather a certain type of suburbs in LA

He was the bad guy who was trying to steal back the McGuffin that he had stolen and was stolen from him by the guy the Rock is trying to get out of the jungle. Walken tries to explain his feeling analogizing to a kid whose Tooth Fairy money is stolen from him but gets frustrated with the interpreter who had no idea what he's talking about. Pretty funny.

The letter explaining her firing was full of the proper lefist BS PC buzzwords.

I really hope what happened leaks out, bcz that is the one thing we don't know. Without knowing context, it's difficult to make a determination if she was being stupid in her word choice, or if the outrage mob was doing their usual MO. Or if those were words she even used. It's that vague at this point.

It is only if this stuff keeps happening that a backlash will occur. I long for a backlash...things have gotten absolutely ridiculous. Feels like mob rule.

Or Where Eagles Dare. The Allied commandos played by English and American actors use English and American accents while speaking German in the story but English on-screen. And the Germans are a mix of English and German actors speaking German in the story but English WITH GERMAN ACCENTS on-screen.

448 A quirky little Christopher Walken movie I enjoyed was Scotland, Pa. It's "Macbeth" set in a fast food joint set in a small town in Pennsylvania. and most of the soundtrack is by Bad Company. Best part is that it never takes itself too seriously - I was entertained.

Pretty sure that's true.

Netflix's business model is really built on binge watching, which comes from television, obviously.

I read they have a few hundred movies available (as opposed to the roughly ten thousand in the DVD service).

On top of that, studios want to keep the rights to their libraries tight to their chest. They want to establish their own streaming services so you have to pay them regularly to watch their stuff instead of Netflix.

The future will be separate streaming services for every production studio.

I prefer physical media.

I'm sorry, but Robin Hood is a quintessential English archetype. Even the other American actors, like Christian Slater, attempted a British accent. I realize that there wasn't an English/British accent in King John's time, but if Costner as a director decided he should do an American accent in a remake of an English icon, why didn't he just update the franchise so that he, as a White American, could help the downtrodden Northern Plains Indians by fighting the Blue Coats and boinking an Indian squaw? Watching the trailer scene of the bomber pilot screaming where are the fighters turned me off. Because in the same shot tucked in tight on the pilot's side of the B-17 are two Merlin powered Mustangs.

Then they decide to give the Red Tails some kind of generic Nazi nemesis of a fighter pilot for the whole movie. A beautiful CGI Bf-109G-6/R-6 Beula is ruined by the spurious and incorrect markings for the ace pilot. The last time the swastika was on the rudder/fin break of a Bf-109 was in 1940, after 1940 it simply was painted on the fin. Then they carry over the same incorrect markings on an Me-262.

Mostly, the movie looks twice as expensive as it actually was. It looks like the boss man squeezed Lucasfilm and ILM for every point of value.

596 I agree with everything about the Ridley Scott Robin Hood although the French king subplot is ahistorical but then the whole Robin Hood story is not history. The village of Nottingham was two years old when they finally shot the movie as it had been built but the movie did not get greenlighted for two years.
I also love the Errol Flynn version and have DVDs of both. I also like Gladiator and was in the pub where Oliver Reed died arm wrestling a British sailor. That was before the movie, though.

I will say it made some sharp points about the use of entertainment to lull the masses under a repressive regime... but The Hunger Games does this better. A lot better.

We all wear kilts. BTW the Germans were almost a scared opf the Scotch as they were of the 5th Marines. Jarheads were Truefel Hunden Dogs from Hell; Sotch wer "Men who wear dresses"; am a former 5th Marine so I know that but I can not translat the name the Huns had for the Scotch. But the Scotch scare 'em almost as much as the Jarheads! and that say a lot!

I was in the room when wife and daughter watched "Mama Mia." From what I could hear, it ripped off the plot of "Buena Sera, Mrs. Campbell." Gina Lollabrigida as single mother who dunned three WWII vets for child support. Frothy comedy.

671 Love the Errol Flynn Robin Hood. Tried to show it to my nephews, but I don't think they had the attention span at the time, so I'll show it again later.

Never saw the Ridley Scott version. At the time I didn't need to see another version, and I think the visual of Maid Marion in armor put me off.

I'll probably skip the upcoming version as well. While I'm really excited about the 'revisionist' action-bowman aspect of the movie....The rest of the movie looks just as off putting as the recent King Arthur. An obligatory black guy, terrible modern action, and I'm all but sure its gunna be filled with SJW cringyness...

673 I love a good apocalypse type movie. Since I know how the real
Apocalypse is going to take place, movies with these kinds of themes
(think end-of-civilization scenarios like zombie movies or alien
invasion films) can be fun fantasy adventures with an opportunity to
examine the human condition in alternate realities. That being said,
I've got two strong recommendations which fall under this category:

THIS IS HOW IT ENDS - A Netflix original starring Forest Whitaker (you
should be watching this just because he's in it) as a military vet who
sets out from Chicago with his intended son-in-law (whom he does not
care for) and heads for Seattle to retrieve his daughter who's trapped
there after an extinction level event causes massive seismic eruptions
on the West Coast and shuts off power across the country. As expected,
things go Lord of the Flies in pretty short order, but the film plays
for realism without explaining exactly what the disaster is (which I
like; either give me a good explanation for your apocalypse scenario or
don't explain it at all). The movie keeps its focus tight, and shoots
for realism, though as with all such disaster/apocalypse movies, the
choice of vehicle is baffling (seriously, no one's getting through a
Road Warrior scenario in a Cadillac STX...why doesn't anyone ever say
"Hey guys, I think we'd be better off in a Hummer or something"?), the
situations are believable and there are a couple of bold choices that
earned my respect as a picky viewer. Loses a couple of points for very
brief and unnecessary nudity but overall a fun ride.
A QUIET PLACE -
Available to rent on Amazon, this is John Krasinski's stunning
directorial debut about a family trying to live in a world where
predatory creatures hunt/kill based on their sensitivity to sound. I'm a
huge fan of Krasinski almost solely because of his portrayal as the
affable Jim Halpert from 'The Office', but I honestly never thought he
would go beyond that. Happy to say I'm wrong as Mr. Krasinski definitely
has a career as a storyteller ahead of him, after seeing the almost
perfectly paced thriller he offers up here. The entirety of the film is
about the difficulties of living on an isolated farm while making the
least amount of noise possible. The reason for the creatures' presence
is wisely left unexplained and instead, the focus is on the
near-impossibility of trying to live a normal life in silence. Krasinski
examines the small things, and because of this, aspects like playing a
simple board game become attempts to tiptoe through a mine field. Of
particular note is Emily Blunt's outstanding performance highlighted by a
nerve-wracking scene where she attempts to give birth without making a
sound, but also without any help (minor spoiler: the baby arrives a few
days earlier than expected, thus the rest of the family is out foraging,
etc.), and "nerve wracking" is just this film's starting point; there
are places where you'll be shouting at your screen, I guarantee it. Some
splatter factor, but nothing that feels gratuitous. Just make sure you
move your seat cushion up to the edge because that's where you'll be
perched.

674 Scott's Robin Hood bored me. That was my takeaway. I watched about an hour of tedium and quit. He's really hit and miss, he can make great movies then he can make something that just doesn't work. And several times his great movies have been great despite his vision (Blade Runner, Alien).

675 Just because it was summer and it was on Netlix, I rewatched Jaws this evening. I haven't seen it in years, and picked up some odds'n'ends I missed the first twenty or so times around.

I think what impressed me so much was the way it has held up these forty-some years. There was no glaring anachronisms to throw you out of the story, such as weird hairstyles or weirder clothes. All too many times I've watched movies I used to love only to discover the acting was really cheesy, but not Jaws. Rob Schneider, Richard Dreyfuss, and especially Robert Shaw gave incredible performances. There was no crappy CGI looking thirty years out of date. It was just a damn good movie.

I'd already read the book before seeing the movie. I was really impressed with the way Peter Benchley stripped every nonessential detail out of the script, especially the stupid romance between the Woods Hole guy and the Police chief's wife. Jaws will always stand in my mind as one of the very, very few times when the movie was better than the book.

679 The upcoming Robin Hood film looks ... terrible. No purpose. No reason to exist other than to reboot a 'beloved' property. The trailer shows the 'spin and shoot' arrow move again and again, desperate to make the weapon cool. It's not working.

That does bring up a good point: Avatar made a ton of money but does anyone list it in their top 10? Does anyone even talk about it any more? Is there really anyone going "we gotta go to the Avatar ride next vacation!!!" like Harry Potter, for example?
