Reminder: The Russians Targeted Republicans, GOP, and Trump Himself In Their Spearfishing and Hacking Schemes, Too

The media and the sillies don't like admitting this, and Mueller doesn't draw much attention to it himself in his indictment. But he does mention it on page 13.

Don't expect to see this on CNN.

Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election wasn't as one-sided as Special Counsel Robert Mueller charges in his latest indictment.

...

"RNC emails were stolen through the same spearphishing scams used against Democrats," a senior U.S. intelligence official familiar with the investigation told RealClearInvestigations. "In fact, prominent Republicans were targeted and similarly victimized by the disclosure of sensitive emails during the campaign."

The indictment acknowledges this on page 13: "The Conspirators also released documents they had stolen in other spearphishing operations, including those they had conducted in 2015 that collected emails from individuals affiliated with the Republican Party."

But that is the only mention of Russian attacks against Republicans in the 29-page indictment that focuses on the targeting and victimization of key Democrats...

In fact, U.S. intelligence officials say the attackers penetrated GOP organizations at both the national and state levels, as well as the individual level, and successfully "exfiltrate" Republican emails during the 2016 election cycle. They add that Trump officials themselves were targeted by Russian intelligence late in 2016, often by phishing schemes, in which fraudulent emails seemingly from trusted sources (e.g. the government, banks or Google) are sent to gain access to personal information.

Mueller's office would not say whether the criminal breaches of GOP organizations carried out by the same bad Russian actors were investigated by his team with the same level of forensic analysis and scrutiny as the Democrat-related cybercrimes.

"We'll decline to comment beyond the indictment," Special Counsel's Office spokesman Peter Carr said.

Yeah, I'll bet you decline to comment.

Read the whole thing.

5 I think over a year ago it was released that Repubs were targeted the same time Dems were. Whether was RUSSIANS is largely speculative as the Repubs cooperated with law enforcement to interdict the attempts to gain access while the Dems refused access.

If they are sure it was RUSSIANS it is because access to Repub servers allowed law enforcement to track the attempts and are assuming the Dems had the same attackers.

The only reason they grabbed them in the first place was that they were trying to develop a route to contest Britain's control of the Indies.

It was called the "Great Game" and it played out throughout most of the 19th Century.

That's how we wound up getting Alaska. Russia couldn't defend it against the encroaching Brits in Canada, and decided they'd be better off selling it to us than losing it outright.

80 So the Russians had 8 years of ascendency during the Obama reign. The botched "Reset" complete with the cheezy plastic button was orchestrated by none other than Hillary herself. By all accounts, Hillary was certain to win the election, and with her leading the U.S., Russia was guaranteed to continue its upward trajectory. Trump was an unknown factor, but he did campaign on a strong America, promising to undo the weakening under Obama/Clinton.

So, if Russia wanted to sway the election one way or the other (and not just create instability as some propose), which way would they want it to go? Who did they want to win?

And, if some of Russia's machinations hurt Clinton, was it to make her lose the election, which just about everyone agreed was nigh impossible, or to ensure that once she took office, she would hit the ground hobbled by scandal and thus less effective against Russia?

I just started listening to an audiobook entitled "A Pope and a President: John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, and the Extraordinary Untold Story of the 20th Century" by Paul Kengor.

He kicks it off with a bang claiming that sources who have seen the document told him:
. William Casey performed a CIA investigation of the assassination attempt on The Pope; and
. It was traced back to the GRU/Kremlin, who orchestrated it through their puppets in Bulgaria, who in turned used Turkish patsies (whom they planned to kill after the assassination) -- as they considered Pope JPII their enemy and greatest threat to communism.

He says it's the most secret document from The Cold War and he implores those in power to release it.

If true, and he's aware of it, could this could be something that PDT could hold over Putin's head?

112 Russia gets pretty much what they want from the 'stans, and operate with impunity there, generally. So not much need for muscle.

Besides, Russia's only aggressive moves have been exactly where one would expect them, based on common sense and hundreds of years of history - the Black Sea region. Georgia is somewhat a special case of obsession, not a very practical one, unlike Crimea. Abkhazia and South Ossetia don't give Moscow a border with Turkey, and only replicate Black Sea port access they already have.

Ukraine was last thread, but a few did note that the parts of Ukraine nibbled off in fact have had ethnic Russian populations forever, and are a natural, as opposed to convenient or ridiculous, pretext for shenanigans. I'm just mildly surprised that western Ukraine - itself lopped off of Poland as part of the Magical Moving Borders resulting from the German defeat, hasn't seen more trouble (i.e. against Kiev).

It was one of the few (possibly ONLY non-Baltic, and non-southern republic) scenes of actual anti-Soviet activity in the good old days. Don't think Kiev is all that much more welcome than Moscow as a ruler.

I'd read that we'd groomed White Russians and Ukrainians as agents to be sent back to the late, unlamented USSR (who else could pass?), and that they'd all been betrayed by moles/Democrats in the intelligence community/State Department.

Which is pretty easy to believe, in the circumstances, since half of the government had been penetrated by the Reds during Roosevelt Administrations. See, e.g., Harry Dexter White (chief negotiator at Bretton Woods), Alger Hiss, etc.

156 > Or is it that she will be on the ballot in Nov. but the other guy will be running as an "independent Socialist Democrat?"

California has what are called "jungle primaries". The top two vote-getters (or vote-stealers, whatever) move on to the general election, even if both of them are from the same party. Thus, voters in the general will have a choice of Communist (de Leon) or Communist Light (Feinstein).

The party machine wants to go full communist, even though Feinstein got way more votes than de Leon in the primary, so they endorsed de Leon.

It's yet another of how the communists have started favoring political fundamentalism over everything else, including the ability to win elections.

I expect them to get still angrier and more dogmatic after they get another curb-stomping in November.

Well, there are generic horses because it has Montana and cowboys. There's also a specific horse that they're trying to break who is proving a test of character to our guys.

Kevin Costner gave it a shot but said oh heck, I'm like 70, we need a young guy with rubber bones. So they took a young guy who doesn't know how to break horses and duct taped him to it.

That's not the worst case. The CA dems are already backing her challenger because they want him to become established as an incumbant with the name association and the requisite war chest that helps them keep the seat on lockdown. Feinstein dying sometime during her term is a disadvantage because it means a viable challenger might appear sometime.

Also, reliably left-wing as she is, she is on occasion rational. And rationality is verboten in the modern democrat party.

Wow, lefties can still manage to impress me sometimes with their ability to shit all over something awesome.

Walter Carr is clearly something special. His boss saw this, and rewarded him with a frickin' new car after one day on the job. How long did you have to wait to get any sort of benefits or bonuses at your job? Yeah.

Walter received a bonus that's probably pretty close to 100% of his annual salary after one day on the job. He did something really amazing, and his boss did something pretty awesome for him in return

And Walter isn't even gonna be working there long-term! He's almost done getting his Associate's Degree, and then he's joining the Marines. Where, by the way... I think he'll fit right in. Marines tend to be impressive dudes, after all.

Here's what ultimately happened, here... one good man really impressed another good man, and received a great reward for it. They both deserve some serious praise!

First of all, EVERYBODY gets foreign phishing emails. There's no way to insulate stupid pols against clicking links in malicious mail, except to ban their internet use.

Second of all, such disputation grants foreign actors the power to CONTROL our elections by simply sending us malicious emails.

This whole "meddling" thing is a g$ddam nothingburger because of the PHONY premise that our democracy cannot withstand disinformation. We need to firmly, explicitly reject that premise! 99% of what voters see is ALWAYS slanted information, from a million different sources, domestic and foreign. Why are we even a republic if we can't trust voters to be skeptical and use discernment? Will we need to muzzle parodists like The Onion and Clickhole, simply because there are stupid voters who believe facially phony content?

Cali has this most open of primaries. Everybody, regardless of party, runs in the same primary. The top two vote getters get to do it again in the general election in November. 272 Preliminary text of my felony complaint against the governor of the Virgin Islands.
On or about September 7, 2017, as part of the preparations for an expected strike of Hurricane Irma, the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Kenneth Mapp, ordered the National Guard to seize lawfully owned firearms and ammunition from residents of this U.S. Territory. Each weapon seized is an individual felony count of violation of 18 U.S. Code 242. (Since the National Guard troops were armed at the time.) The appropriate section of 18 U.S. Code 242 reads as follows:
Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States...

The governor was apparently acting under color of some law granting him some sort of emergency power. That does not matter, as 18 U.S. Code 242 says, no law may override constitutional rights. His action, and the actions of the National Guard troops involved, directly deprived the victims of their crimes, of their second amendment rights to keep and bear arms, and are, without question, textbook violations of 18 U.S. Code 242.

I have filed these charges as soon as became aware of the actions of the Governor and National Guardsmen.

(from Newsbusters) Ocasio-Cortez gets herself into trouble when she starts talking about the Middle East and referring to Israelis who have settled in the West Bank as occupiers of Palestine. Hoover follows up, smartly, and Ocasio-Cortez begins to talk about an increase in settlements that makes it more difficult for Palestinians to access "their housing." Sensing that she is making things worse not better, Ocasio-Cortez admits: "I am not the expert on geopolitics on this issue."
