Thread before the Gardening Thread: Art, Not Gardening [KT]

notgardening.jpg

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Okay, a pile of dirt is involved, but this does not qualify as urban gardening. It is called 'Resistencia'. Video below the fold. David Thompson posted a longer video of a similar performance here. You might like to take a look through the comments.

You see, Ms Lopez describes her mission as nothing less than "expanding the consciousness of human beings." As will doubtless become clear.

She seems to like the pose above. Dirt, water, who knows which medium will inspire her, and us, next? You may need to scroll past some other works of art to reach her interaction with water.

By way of contrast, in case you missed it earlier, VDH discusses the history of The Good Populism in ancient Greece and beyond. (H/T Maggie's Farm) He notes the importance of middle class agrarians to the emergence of democracy. Agrarians who produced something more tangible than the art featured today. When nature cooperated, anyway. Farmers, gardeners, those types.

The mesoi, or "middle guys," both predated and remained somewhat at odds with contemporary radical Athenian democracy. Yet these agrarian property-owning classes were also originally responsible for the Greek city-state and thus for Western civilization itself. The Jeffersonian idea of preserving ownership of a family plot, and passing on farms through codified inheritance laws and property rights, were the themes of the constitutions of the early polis. The citizen--neither a peasant nor a subject--remained rooted to a particular plot of ground, and thereby enjoyed the tripartite rights of citizenship: military service, voting rights in the assembly, and the ability to be self-supporting and autonomous. The mesoi, then, lent stability to otherwise often volatile consensual politics.

Back to today's Art.

And here's the video where Roger Kimball introduces VDH, who discusses The Good Populism, among other things. His grandmother understood something. The Q and A is interesting.

Hope you have a great weekend. Hope your life does not imitate today's art.

53 interesting subject ... it is concerning to see those fake paper trillions made in leveraged gambling casinos (markets where the 2Big2Fail/Jail get bailouts) ... those trillions are buying up the countryside, and the proles are pushed into little boxes in the metropolis.

Mass production may be efficient, and bulldozing everything in the way, but the family farm should get the tax incentives, not the farm "conglomerate" that buys up everything he can, using "outside billionaire" funny money from the inflated markets.

Local bankers back in depression days were shrewd enough, and farmers struggled to hold on to the farm if they had debt. But if we let the funny money trillionaires buy up the land itself, and the people become the non-owner servant class, we lose 'America' and liberty goes with it.

I'm listening to VDH now, thanks for that link.

96 for the MotherEarth Gaia believer, perhaps the head in dirt worship could reveal some deep (weird) thoughts. But a chemistry degree, or at least an agronomy class, would be much more helpful in understanding the dynamics of "dirt".

I do no-till farming, so I feel really bad for that soil that was taken from its family, basically murdered with its tilth stolen from it, and then its lifeless corpse put on display in some concrete sterile environment. But it is befitting that she has her head up ... where the sun don't shine.

99 Speaking of digging in dirt, Buckley the Wonder Dog found an entire deer leg (looks like the femur and still-articulated lower leg of probably a fawn) in the woods last week. He brought it back to the cabin and slunk (slinked?) around for twenty minutes trying to find the best spot, dug a fairly good-sized hole, dropped the leg in and covered it back up by shoveling dirt with his snout. Since then he has dug it up and relocated it to a different spot no fewer than 5 times.

He looks worried.

But I digress. I'm ambling down the street, when a very attractive young lady in a short skirt joins the flow immediately in front of me. We're walking along, and pass Mecca man. Sure enough, his head pivots as if on an axle to watch sashaying girl. I busted out laughing and told him he'd just blown his cover.

I'll say this, and then I really do have to get on with my day.

Here's your consciousness-expanding: Way too many people are abused as children. Some of them sexually. All this nonsense we see, the gender ident doofuses, the rage spitters on the streets, the absolute nitwittery we see from so much of the left... it is for many, directly traceable to their abuse history. A direct line, from then to now.

Simple as that.

So yeah, let's expand our consciousness. You were abused as a child, and that's why you are acting out. So I'm sorry for that, but indulging your insanity? Yeah, no. It doesn't help you at all, so we're going to not do that.

Eric Blair = George Orwell

I always wondered about that. You would think that "Eric Blair" would be the pen-name since it sounds handsome.
I mean, if you were writing a romance novel, you wouldn't name the hero "George Orwell" in preference to "Eric Blair," would you?

Then again, you might not want a pretty name for grim and serious work. In mid-20th-century terms, George wears glasses and Eric does not. And as Pol Pot would say, those folks with glasses are half-smart.

My personal rule of thumb concerning choice of nutritional sources is that I will eat any thing that doesn't eat me first. That's pretty much it. OK, I'm not comfortable with the cannibal thing, Cannibal Bob, but I want to keep an open mind about it and am willing to have my consciousness expanded. As long as I don't have to stick my head in what I'm about to eat.

That reminds me of Tommy Boy: "I can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take a butcher's word for it."

my goal is to get natural populations (that I like) that will dominate their own little area, look nice, and require minimal maintenance. Or to find the right chemicals to keep the weeds in check while good plants thrive.

But plenty of people want the "toes in the sand" lifestyle ... every day at the beach. But "producing" from the ground is pretty cool.

Well don't get thinking you're special. ace hates all of us equally, collectively, and individually. The HQ is purgatory, and this is our penance. We all deserve to be here. We wouldn't be here if we hadn't earned our place.

Eckhart saw the HQ too. He said the only thing that posts in threads is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. ace burns them all away. But he's not punishing you, he said. He's freeing your soul. So the way he sees it, if you're frightened of dying and... and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really ace, freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all. So don't worry, okay?

222 99 Speaking of digging in dirt, Buckley the Wonder Dog found an entire deer leg (looks like the femur and still-articulated lower leg of probably a fawn) in the woods last week.

I think our Dolly has about three dozen remnant bones, Himalayas, and rawhide chews stashed about the house and dog pen. She rotates them from place to place. It's a hoot to watch her "shovel dirt" with her nose when stashing it under a blanket or laundry. It won't look quite right or something, so she uncovers it and starts all over, in the same spot.

She doesn't dig outside and really bury, though.

The only time I've been to Washington St. was when I met some family for a vacation in Port Townsend, located where Puget Sound meets the Juan de Fuca Strait. Wonderful vacation spot, took a boat out and saw killer whale pods, and very beautiful. The abandoned shore defense fortifications are all grown over and feel like Mayan ruins now.

Anyway, just a few miles below Port Townsend I saw "The Egg and I" Road. Turns out that's where the events that the book was based on took place.

259 I always wondered about that.

Posted by: Margarita DeVille at July 21, 2018 12:21 PM (0jtPF)

He said at one time he hated the name "Eric", but also (post WWII) that in his personal life he used both. Some people called him Eric, and some George.

If you read a lot of what he wrote - beyond the usual collection - you do see that he really was a left winger. But also a liberal in the old sense, and that was stronger than the socialism. In any case, he is simply the greatest man of the left who ever lived. Could anyone imagine a recent lefty saying Tom Wolf was the best contemporary novelist? The idea is absurd. But that's what Orwell said of Waugh; and Waugh was much further from the mainstream that Wolf ever was.

You're *only* supposed to spend about 25% of income on housing expense. This is a long term recognized standard. That number can be bumped higher if you're willing to make some concessions on discretionary spending; buy cheaper cars, don't take expensive vacations, brown-bag not buy lunch... The wife and I have always been willing to make those concessions for the better house.

Why aren't people allowed to make their own financial decisions Ms. Warren? The better apartment in a better neighborhood with the smaller car, the brown bag lunch, etc.

275 Two longtime favorites, Kimball and VDH. Hanson's talk was interesting, but I always have one problem with his position. I don't see any evidence that the kind of middle class agrarian populism has much staying power. Their very virtues, which make them good rulers, entail they don't maintain the compulsion to ram their programs down everyone else's throats. That's a severe disadvantage in any political system. (Plato notes this in the Republic. People often miss the fact that the careful education of the philosopher kings is explicitly intended to choose people who really don't want to rule. Of course, that is a bit of a fantasy.)

VDH also doesn't discuss (it's only one speech) the extent that other Greek cities also were largely ruled in the manner he describes. I have one friend who, arguing from VDH's Other Greeks*, that it's really the more obscure ones that got it right. Athens, on this view, went corrupt early.

*I still think its his best book.

288 So... I have regrettably always had bad luck with jalapenos.

Any tips?

Posted by: Shameless at July 21, 2018 12:57 PM (eGFSg)

Get 6 large firm whole ones and wash them well. Put on latex / nitrile gloves for all the prep work. You'll thank me later. Slice off the stem end and then slice longwise. Clean out the guts and every last seed. Wash the 2 pieces again.
When you have 12 slices, get the cream cheese and cup/glass with water in it. Wet the knife each time and spread the cream cheese into each slice, smoothing the top and open end.
Open a package of thick sliced bacon. Wrap a sliced bacon around the cream cheese filled slice of jalapeno, starting at the open end of the slice and wrapping down and then back as far as you can go, stretching the bacon slice slightly. Fix the bacon onto the jalapeno with a toothpick or two, making sure all of the cream cheese is covered by the slice of bacon.
With your charcoal grill ready to go (sorry, Mr. Hank Hill), put each slice face down (flat side down) and close the cover. Watch for flareups from the dripping bacon fat. Use a cooler charcoal fire than you would for burgers. When the downside bacon is cooked to your liking, flip the wrapped slices. Be gentle and careful in using tongs as to not squeeze out the hot, melty cream cheese. Close the cover and watch all the smokey, greasy goodness waft through your neighborhood, setting off all the dogs to start barking in ravenous hunger.
Gently remove from the grill (don't squeeze the tongs!) and take inside to share with drooling family and friends. Feeds 3 - 4 adults or 1 small adult plus 1 teen boy.

290 One small thing that VDH said which isn't quite right. He says that "peasants" are wholly different from the "yeomen" he is talking about. That does seem to be the standard American usage. But not English.

Take for example Goldsmith's "bold peasantry, their nation's pride"; that clearly refers to what he means by middle class or yeoman farmers. I've read Brit authors (including GKC) who described us as a 'peasant republic". It was meant as praise.

Its a problem that the Babel effect can work within a single language.

"Their very virtues, which make them good rulers, entail they don't maintain the compulsion to ram their programs down everyone else's throats."

Hence people like Donald Trump, who acknowledge them but may have such compulsions?

I think he emphasized their place as citizens more than their place as rulers in the speech above.

Posted by: KTbarthedoor at July 21, 2018 01:19 PM (BVQ+1)

But the very Greek notion of "citizenship" is built around taking part in the running of the polis. And that fact is clearly at the core of the idea that such a state can be kept decent.

As to Trump, I'm not clear he has such a compulsion. For fame, admiration, prestige, notoriety, call it what you like, he certainly does. And certainly for winning. But he's shown a lot of flexibility on actual issues. Trump is hard to put into any of the usual political categories.

How can you even joke about net neutrality? Millions of men now suffer the effects of throttling back their connection speed to PronHub causing millions of cases of ER 'blue ball syndrome' diagnoses.

Health care costs are going to rise, productivity among government employees will plummet, and a generation of men will suffer the permanent distention of their testiculars.

No joking matter.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 21, 2018 01:28 PM (AllCR)

It's instructive to consider the origin of this "internship" crap.

I think it's several-fold:

1. The educational system churns out lots of useless wankers with a sense of entitlement, so a kid's educational achievement is meaningless;

2. Owing to various labor laws, and of course affirmative action etc., businesses are loathe to hire people that they may have to fire later. Much safer to get a free tryout and see what the kid is like;

3. Businesses get free labor, which is always nice. The worst that happens is the kid is useless, in which case you've not lost anything; you just send him out to get danishes, pretty much the way Sidley Austin used Obama.

Posted by: Puddin Head at July 21, 2018 01:23 PM (vV/gB)

If so, it must be the yeoman who is the essential ingredient, as merchants have been pretty much universal. There were Chinese and Arab merchants all over the Indian Ocean long before Da Gama.

But on the other hand, neither Greece nor Rome seems to have moved from slavery, despite the free farmers. The first reduction of slavery came in the middle ages, when there was the progression of slave to serf to freeman, (merchants had little to do with it, so far as I can see).

But then, I'm an extreme skeptic about historical causal laws.

You know, taking half your paycheck, giving pallets of cash to regimes that want us dead, not having an actual budget for the federal government in over a decade.... that sorta shit.

I remember reading something in Durant's massive "Story of Civilization" books that slavery was valuable because it gave us our sense of toil, and without being made to do something nothing of merit would get done because humans, like everything else that breathes, wants to do as little as possible.

So slavery led us here. Pretty neat to ponder.

People getting degrees in fields that count as "an education" take internships while they're being educated. Once they have a degree, they can get a paying job.

Post-graduation "internships" are usually for the indoctrination-without-education majors, aren't they?

That's certainly true. And getting a Noble Prize does not guarantee happiness.

A lot of guys would say they'd be happy when they finished their Ph.D.

But then they did, and they weren't happy. They'd be happy when they got a good postdoc, they said.

But then they did, and they weren't happy. They'd be happy when they got a good faculty position, they said.

But then they did, and they weren't happy. They'd be happy when they got tenure, they said.

But then they did, and they weren't happy. They'd be happy when they got an endowed chair, they said.

But then they did, and they weren't happy. They'd be happy when they got into the National Academy, they said.

But then they did, and they weren't happy. They'd be happy when they got the Nobel Prize, they said.

But then a few did, and they weren't happy. Now what? A second one, maybe? Or are they scratching where it doesn't itch?

----

Also, why would you WANT to be widely known? What good is that to you? If I were in Hollywood, I wouldn't want to be an actor; I'd rather be a director, producer, or studio executive. Then you can go to a 7/11 and no one bothers you, because they have no idea who you are. Perfect.

Having an easy time with classes through high school leads to terrible habits later on. People who had to work hard for grades learned study skills and time management skills that put them in a good position later on, whether or not they go to college or do something vocational instead. Waking up to find yourself failing out of college because you can't just show up on exam days and ace the final any more and then discovering that you never learned to study and don't know how to start is pretty miserable.

I've enjoyed the college/employment discussion. It aligns with a situation in our household. (Not going to go into detail.)

Still, it's amazing how many types of jobs exist. Reminds me of when I went to the counseling center at college. I took a test on job interests. Scored evenly on everything except farming, which was way at the bottom of the scale. As I had grown up on a farm, I was not in the least bit surprised.

Posted by: mikeski at July 21, 2018 02:11 PM (P1f+c)

I've changed careers twice. I don't think either of these is necessarily all bad. For the glorified secretary, I'm very much in favor of people starting on the ground floor, and then being promoted up. We all know people who started out at the bottom and really learned the business and how to work with people. As for wasting the PT degree, true that she's not directly applying it, but I bet she had to work with patients in a practical internship of some type, and being a headhunter is still all about working with people. Farming overlaps a lot with engineering -- the farm is a factory where you take the inputs, apply labor and technology, and get outputs. There are machines. Agriculture may be a better major for a future farmer, but an engineering degree isn't totally wasted.
