Easier Problem - White To Play (722)

Every player knows (or ought to know) that you can't get a checkmate with only two knights, i.e. KNN vs. K is a draw. Yes, you can arrange the pieces on the board in a checkmate position, for example, starting with an empty board, put the black king on h8, place the white knights on f6 and g6, and put the White king on f7. That is, indeed, checkmate. But such a position can never be forced. Unlike, say, KBN vs. K where you can, step by step, inch by inch, force Black's king to the edge of the board and then waltz him into the corner for the checkmate. But you can't do this if all you have is two knights. The king will always be able to wiggle free.

Actually, that's a bit of a lie. You can do it if there are other black pieces on the board. Like the position below. The presence of the black pawn makes the mate with 2 knights possible. I put this one up as an 'Easy' problem because Black's king is almost completely restricted already, so it's not difficult to bring the other knight up and force the checkmate.

And you should be able to do it in 4 moves.

Black is up in material. White's last move, Qf5, was a blunder. How can Black best put White out of his misery?

Hint: Force White to exchange pieces to reduce his material even further

This is a great photo of Audrey and of course the dress is lovely, but something about her eyes isn't quite right. It looks like the photographer tried to make them brighter somehow, but the effect is very unsettling. (h/t MP⁴ for the photo)

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play

8/5K1k/8/5N2/8/5p2/5N2/8 w - - 0 1

The way I solved this problem was seeing that I needed to drive the black king to the corner. So first I needed to bring up the knight on f2:

1.Ng4 f2

1...Kh8 is also a possibiliy. I'll deal with that line below.

2.Nf6+ Kh8
3.Ne7

This is the key: if Black didn't have a pawn on the board, this move would result in stalemate, and now you can see why KNN vs. K is a draw. But because Black has a pawn, he has a legal move.

3...f1=Q

He's now got a queen, but he'll never get a chance to use it.

4.Ng6#

Also possible is 1...Kh8 2.Nf6 f2 3.Ne7 f1=Q 4.Ng6#

1...Re1+!

This is just a preliminary check to drive the king to a more vulnerable square.

2.Kh2 Bd7

And now the threat is not just ...Nxg4, but ...Nxg4+, which packs a bit more punch.

3.Qxd7

Yes, coughing up the queen is probably the best thing White can do at this point. If he tries to save it, he'll lose quickly, for example: 3.Qf4 Nxg4+ 4.Kh3 Rh1#

3...Nxd7
4.Bxd7 Bxd4
5.g4 Bxb2
6.Kg3 c3
7.Bf5 Re2
8.Kf3 Rd2
9.Ke3 c2
10.Kxd2 c1=Q+ and wins.

I assume there is a way to trap the Q. So it would have to move to g6 or f4 or f3 to protect the B. But it can also move to a5 or c5 and give up the B. In the latter case, I suppose the mate threat becomes an issue. Very complicated. I will think on it a bit more.

I have a programmable thermostat and keep it set at 80 during the day when I'm at work. In the winter I keep it in the low to mid 60s and wear a sweater indoors.

64 I realize this isn't the food thread, but I just tried making a cheesesteak for the first time. I've been trying to work up the courage for a few days. The last time I was in the store I bought steak rolls, SteakUms, a pepper and an onion. I already had provolone cheese for sandwiches.

I started by preheating the oven to 250 in order to warm the roll. I chopped up some onion and pepper and started heating them up in a frying pan. I had way more than I needed.

I had never tried cooking SteakUm before. My idea was to push the pepper and onion to the side and cook the SteakUm, putting a slice of cheese on top when it was done. The SteakUm started falling apart, so I just mixed the whole mess together in the frying pan.

I took the roll out of the oven and it had dried out a bit. I dumped the ingredients on the roll, and the overflow landed on the plate and I had to eat that part with a fork.

Verdict: Passable for a first attempt. Next time I'll use less onion and pepper and cook them longer. I'll try not heating the roll, and use more SteakUm. Maybe I'll try mozzarella in place of provolone.

Try cooking the steak umms first and drain off all the grease as they make a lot of it. Pat the steak umms dry with a paper towel then add back to the pan with some Worcestershire sauce (a couple of tablespoons) and salt and pepper then add the onion/pepper mix to the pan and cook until they are soft.

As for meat, thin sliced Ribeye is the way to go. You will likely have to get your butcher to do it.

108 Rickl- I pretty sure I live somewhat near to you. I live in Ambler Pa. Anyway, if you could get to Sam's Italian Market in Willow Grove on Moreland Road, they sell "chipped steak" by the pound. It is beef sliced thin and I used this for years to make steak sandwiches for the family. They also make their own Italian rolls.

It is my contention, and I say this as someone who grew up in the Philadelphia area, that the cheese steak is the only food that gets better the further you get from its place of origin.

No......Just use a medium setting and stir to keep it all moving and the steak ums are loaded with fat so they hold up well and your sammich won't be a grease bomb.

Kroger too. They have thin-sliced "stir-fry beef", which is not bad if you don't feel like doing a lot of slicing. I'm not sure what cut it is, but it's not full of fat or connective tissue or anything. I think it's meat-flavored.

definitely try it, it won't kill ya. I prefer provolone, particularly good provolone but I see why some like processed cheese at times. There is a place for it though not lots of places lol. For example, try making a good queso dip out of farmhouse cheddar or provolone. Then try it with processed American cheese. Different applications for different needs. But I can't think of many reasons to put Cheese Whiz on a sandwich these days. The taste is is not there.

Oh, cool. It has become nice. I have tried to explain to young people and imports that it used to suck and they don't believe me.

There was nothing there. I mean, the quaint Victorian housing stock was there, but there was nothing in terms of retail or cultural life. The most "exotic" thing that happened was we got Nat's Sicilian Pizza and all of a sudden you could get a pizza that was square and deep.

Now it has Afghani Tschotschke shops, Asian fusion restaurants, vintage vinyl and comics stores. It's cool, it's tony, it's twee.

I swear to God it was a wasteland.

198 I was briefly involved with an actual German woman in my younger days who would make some sort of smashed and breaded chicken, a weird noodle-ish dish (schnitzel?), and a potato salad that I remember containing maybe vinegar and lots of bacon. It was always delicious.

I mostly use it for Queso dip and standard cheese burgers. For all other applications I go with the gourmet stuff.

The singles are a nice pantry option. They store as well as Twinkies so a good backup. And dips usually have other tasty ingredients so the cheese is less important.
