Truncated ONT

I usually try to bring about 6-10 links, pics or assorted other content to an ONT. I've found that more than that and good stuff gets overlooked. Well lets see now. Ace did the Die Hard anniversary, he did the Jonathan Chait troll, he did the guy stuck in an escape room. STOP STEALING MY CONTENT BOSS! What's left? Maybe we'll just talk about the weather or something. Sure is hot in Texas, innit?

RARE COPY OF DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE FOUND IN BRITISH ARCHIVES

Dating tests completed earlier in July finally confirmed the researchers’ hypothesis that the Sussex Copy, as it has been dubbed, was produced some time in the 1780s, just a few years after the original declaration on July 4, 1776.

Although there are other printed and handwritten copies of the declaration, the Sussex copy “is the only other contemporary manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence on parchment apart from the signed copy at the National Archives in Washington DC,” the West Sussex County Council said in a statement.

Why Do Americans Call It ‘Soccer’ Instead of ‘Football’?

I brought some of these facts to a snooty British bint who was snooting about the word soccer last week on Twitter. He sneered at me and said “I know all that bullshit, it doesn't matter, that's why nobody likes Americans”. I gave him my best O'Rourkean reply:

Merica 2.jpg

He snooted at that two. Hmm, maybe I should find the conversation and reply back “HA-HA! Croatia, bitch!”

Trolling for Clicks

Let's be honest, America: Dogs are parasites, not man's best friend

I read the clickbait article. It completely ignores that humans get as much from dogs as dogs get from us. The relationship is mutualistic, not parasitical. The whole article struck me as an attempt to force a mutually beneficial relationship into the victim/oppressor mold that is so prevalent on the left these days, a legacy of Marxist thought that has pervaded every aspect of what passes for "analysis" in the West.

Remember last week when I posted an article about how Obama let Hamas run wild with his batshit insane version of “diplomacy”? Well, it looks like he shut down US operations against major drug smugglers too. It's going to take us a long, long time to fully recover from that cockholster, if we ever do.

41 I used to find it odd that the Brits completely forgot that they came up with the name Soccer. How does a nation forget things that are not just history, but still exist today? Like how the oldest UK "football" magazine is named "World Soccer".

But looking at our own pop culture's complete lack of historical knowledge and sense of self, the soccer thing does not seem so out of place.

57 Re: drunk gulls.

In the book thread we've talked about "When the Killing's Done", a T. C. Boyle book in which two schools of enviros clash about which particular state of Eden nature should be returned to in the Channel Islands off Catalina.

The same thing happened in real life in Chatham, MA in the 90s. (Chatham is at the elbow of Cape Cod, arguably the toniest town on the peninsula).

There is a stupid unimportant bird called the piping plover which seems to insist on nesting in Jeep tracks on its way to species suicide. The entire Cape has become committed to saving the plover, no matter what it costs in terms of beach access, over sand driving, and don't go there.

We're protecting 50 or a 100 nesting pairs of a bird that's not good at staying alive.

So, in the 90s, someone said hey the problem is that the seagulls are eating all the plover eggs. Let's kill the seagulls.

And they put poison in peanut butter sandwiches and dropped them all around Monomoy Island, which is an important rookery.

Did I call Chatham a tony town? I should mention that that means it's a tourist town. So all of a sudden you had thousands of poisoned seagulls wandering drunkenly around rich tourists and dropping dead in the street.

Hilarity ensued.

Honestly, both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could make this work by having one of the agents sent to Guantanamo (with VIP privileges and armed guards in case Mueller is truly desperate). Then dunk on the Special Counsel even harder before the midterms.

I'm mildly annoyed our President hasn't simply jailed or liquidated Mueller and his team yet, but then he's much better at playing this game than I am.

I'm not sure that is true. If a GRU agent comes back to America to face "trial" and Mueller is obviously caught with his pants down, it will be one more hard punch to the balls of the DOJ and FBI.

The media, which disgustingly includes Drudge, makes every little thing into a huge indictment against the President. The sheer ease with which even i could turn things on them means things are really looking bad for Mueller, and even before the midterms.

Our magazines all have fire suppression up here so cook-off is unlikely, but we can't rule it out. I'll look into seawater flooding systems, thanks for the suggestion.

There'll be a whole roast suckling pig as part of the feastivities.

Lots of guns, lots of shootin'. After the guns are safed n' cased, the gastronomical firing line will be called "hot", and it'll be free-fire grazing and full-auto chowing.

After dinner, various bottles of interesting liquids will appear, as if by magic. And begin to disappear, albeit a shot at a time, of course.

I'd wager on a few post-prandial cigars making their own appearances and contributions to the conversations, stories, laughs and lies.

Come early, plan to stay late. Let your liver burn off some of the rocket fuel before you launch back to your hotel, of course. Be safe, and be legal.

The CenTex Mo Meet isn't the first, isn't the original.

But it is without doubt though, the best.

185 That picture of the dying child brings back memories. Had been doing Hospice about 15 yrs at the time and considered myself tough.Got called for the death of a 4 yr old. Dad would not give up the kid. Sat there and rocked it for 3 hours until he let him go. My first Hospice cry.
2nd was a woman in her 60's ( I've told this story before so I apologize) She had a dog that was 17 and could hardly walk. About an hour before she passed this dog jumped up on the bed and laid next to her. Wouldn't leave her side even as we tried to remove the body.

Uh, isn't the most effective way to cope with a disability to cure it?

You can see the full "intersectional" brain damage at work here.

- It's wrong to cure a disability because that would imply that the disabled person was not in an optimal state, which is hate speech.

- It's especially wrong for minorities to be cured of their disabilities because they need to show whitey that they can live perfectly content lives with their crippled bodies without having to rely on white devil medicine.

And she apparently didn't get the memo that it's not disabled, it's differently abled.

oh, btw, cats are better than dogs

"Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.

"Gentlemen of the jury: A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

Death is life. When you go, how you go, who is with you is what matters.

Americans have become so insulated from it, we have lost sight of this.

Grandma 1000 miles a way passed last night? A phone call or a text. I'll try and get back.

Uncle Fred who you haven't seen in 17 years? Didn't know he was sick. Send some flowers in my name.

Take a good look at that picture. See the beauty, the dignity, the love. How it's supposed to be.

I don't have Molly's experience but I have been involved in a few hundred deaths over the years. The cold knock on the door, the arrival at the accident scene, the ICU or comfort care bed.

The Burden and The Privilege.

256 I was really deep in denial, but this Russian hacker indictment really beat the truth into me: I now realize that the only reason I didn't vote for HRC was Russian interference in our sacred election process!

Had it not been for those wily meddling beet-eaters befogging my reasoning, I would have walked into that voting booth with an unpolluted mind, and pulled the lever for the (now) obviously logical, only possible candidate with axiomatically true policy positions and depth of experience, Hillary.

I believe 2016 was the first election in American history, if not world history, in which false and/or misleading info was available to the voters. This unprecedented breach of thousands of years of infallibly true information in the public sphere must be seen for what it is: a lethal first-strike against all that we cherish and hold dear, nothing less than spitting in the face of God Himself.

Perhaps we can survive this attack with a do-over. By shielding the USA from all foreign communications, silencing the fifth columnists at home, and then re-holding the 2016 election, the True Voice of the American People may be heard. There is little chance of success, but we MUST try everything to save the republic.

When I go, I'll be lucky to have anyone by my side. I'm here in Texas with family on the East n' West Coasts, twice divorced, no kids.

Funerary wishes are that I be properly mulched and used as fertilizer.

What, you gonna let 210 lbs. of Top Grade B.S. go to waste?

If the County won't allow that, y'all pyros can send me off by way of Viking Funeral.

I'll try to remember to die very, very drunk, so as to make ignition less difficult.

Do keep in mind though please, that I'm in NO HURRY for the festivities to begin? I figure I'm good for a couple more decades, anyway.

And my dad asked that I visit grandpa and I did, because dad was out of town; and the change was so shocking - I had seen him the month before - he thought I was dad; I didn't disabuse him of that because why? And when I went home I sat in the kitchen, just thinking, and when mom and dad got back I said "you have to go see him now" in exactly that flat voice, the one that says 'no joking, I am actually out of jokes now' and dad went and saw grandpa; and later that night I heard the phone ring and it was the call, the old man, my grandfather, had passed.

It is so strange when it is like that, the person you knew isn't there, and that person is going away. If you can you talk, digging into memories to find some part of that person you can hold onto, and at the end it all folds back into your memories, that person refuses to stay.

Lots of family in the house and Mom was hanging on more every time someone would come to her bedside. I told the SIL no and that was the end. I kinda feel guilty for making that call.

334 Prayers for all dealing with the bitter things. Death, pain, illness are our lot sooner or later. We are born to die. What happens between cradle and grave will be mostly filled with happiness and a satisfied mind if you are fortunate, not so nice otherwise.

I am fortunate. I count my blessings. And I must count sheep now, bailing hay tomorrow in the sweaty Iowa summer; unless the 50% rain forecast proves true. Then I will mildly curse and ask my neighbor to bail once it drys out. Because we are headed for a two week vacation in a cabin on a lake in northern Minnesota.

Here's my problem, as a radio program director (and this isn't directed at you, specifically):

Play too few songs, listeners complain of repetition, and leave.

Play too many songs, listeners complain they don't hear their favorites often enough, and leave.

I can't please everyone. My job is to keep as many listeners as possible for as long as I can, and it's not always as easy as some people think.

Went to the Grey Cup both years we were in the league. We lost to the BC Roughriders in '96 and beat the Calgary Roughriders in '97. Still the only American team to win the Grey Cup, and it really did catch on with some folks down here. There's a contingent of Baltimore fans that go to the Grey Cup each year, everybody looks for them.

Speaking of Calgary, they're 4-0 right now. Wonder if they are going to go all the way and lose again. Seems they're yearning to be the Bills of the CFL.

When I hosted a morning show in Abilene, TX in the mid-90s, one of my "crew" was a "traffic reporter" who sounded a lot like Elvis. Back then, the rush hour in Abilene was 10 minutes. 370 A passing that I was not present to attend, but which has changed the life of the young man's mother, who I've been with now fourteen years.

Her youngest son (of two), had undergone open heart surgery for a bad heart valve, at age 11.

Wed at age 28, he was at home in Glasgow, Scotland with his wife and young daughter, when after one hell of a yelling shouting domestic argument, he blacked out at the top of the stairs, and collapsed down the stairs to the bottom.

Despite the efforts of his wife, neighbors and first responders, he failed to revive, and died at age 33.

Folks, I'll tell you.

That was one hell of a long flight from Houston to Scotland.

Due to my having to return to work, I missed the services, which were much delayed by Police & Coroner's Inquiry. I had to leave her there in the U.K., until the authorities released his body to the family.

Over a thousand were there to see him off at the chapel and crematory. He was absolutely one of the best, MY BEST FRIEND, and I miss him terribly, still.

My loss though, pales in comparison to the devastation weighed upon his Mom. Nearly four years on, and it's still an open wound in her soul.

There is no "good" time to say goodbye. Goodbye always sucks, and it always will.

Until, that is... we join them again for that next Hello.

The Holy Reunion, so far beyond our entire vocabulary of words to even describe the anticipation, the joy, the reward, the Glory of His presence.

Then death loses it's sting, and is transcended by life, evermore.

Sounds like you are doing Classis Rock, anywhere from late 60s to early-mid 80s. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

The problem that I have, and I have to remind myself that this is a 30 y/o problem, is that pop hits were overplayed THEN. So, when I hear them again today on classic rock stations, I still think of them of overplayed today.

Does this make any kinda sense?

400 Calm Mentor,

It's more "classic hits", or what oldies stations have turned into. Mostly 70s and 80s, with a little late 60s and early 90s sprinkled in.

And yes, that does make sense. I've done my research, though, and what is a constant is that many of the songs some complain of being overplayed...are the ones the majority of our listeners still want to hear. It sounds weird, I know, but experience over the last 32 years keeps proving it true. Some songs play more often, others less often, and there are some I hold back for special theme weekends, or specialty shows like our dance-themed Saturday night show.

It could be worse...our main in-format competitor in the nearest metro area, has a playlist that's half the size of ours, and they are way more repetitive.

This really hits home. My only sister died in 2001, leaving three young kids. They've all grown up now and made lives for themselves, but there has always been that missing piece that just can't be replaced. My niece especially. She has an eating disorder and weighs nothing. I worry that she won't make old bones because of it. And I can't do a damn thing about it. I miss my sister every day, but more than that I miss what she could have been in her kids' lives.

You ever consider it's your fear that's the reason for dogs going nuts? Dogs are predators and can smell fear. With me it's the exact opposite. I love, and am genuinely happy, seeing dogs and when I walk around the neighborhood dogs whom I've never met before reciprocate and love seeing me. I've had people say things like 'My dog never does that around anyone' and I always reply 'I'm not anyone'.

I was told as a young kid by my older sister: 'You can't be all bad, Rick, dogs and kids like you'. I didn't grow up around cats but even strange cats like to rub their scent against me and claim me as theirs. Now human women are another -- and completely different -- story.

I still love most of the songs we play -- it's the music from my teens and twenties, and I have an emotional connection to it.

But also, since it's my job, I tend to listen to talk radio in the car or other music that's on my phone.

The one artist I kind of liked in the 80s that I'm totally sick of now is John Mellencamp.

We had a neighbor who had a mastiff named 'Frank'. We all called him 'Frank the Tank'.

Their biggest problem with Frank, was that if stopped to talk to anyone while walking him, he would lie down on his side and go to sleep.

I have heard there is a group of teachers in CA that are working on a class action suit. One of the theories is that since this is overturning a previous ruling it is valid to go after back dues that fair-share employees were forced to pay as a condition of their employment. From there you have to wonder how far back such an action would be valid. A full 25 years? That would bankrupt some unions.

If you could claim that it was an overturned decision that made fair-share requirements legal, and the only thing allowing these amounts to be taken from a check was laws saying that the only reason such a taking was legal was this decision, you have something to work with,

And of course you would have to pay back any deductions claimed on the sums paid, and you will most likely have to pay a ginormous tax bill on it as it shoves you way up in revenue for the one year.

Kindltot, I'll kick in for printing costs.

I spent three days of vacation (first two visits were wasted when they cancelled the meetings) in Olympia protesting my being Shanghaied to a stacked board that took 5 minutes to deliberate and rule that I was officially a member. Was a victim of a secret election. I spent another day of vacation at the union office to apply for an exemption from paying any money going to political activities. They got tired of me giving them the evil eye in the lobby and finally signed the papers.

Fargin' icehole bastiges! It's WAR!

Think maybe I will offer to run interference for anybody who wants to dump their union. I got through bucking a Teamsters election in the 70's so these clowns aren't scary.

Invest in a reasonably large drone, one that can carry 200 8.5x11 flyers (or 400 smaller ones), and that has a range of at least 1/4 mile.

Fly it over an SEIU rally or two, and drop trou a big pile of leaflets.

492 i was w*rking at a 2nd world hospital located in the 3rd world part of a First! world city when the SEIU goons decided to go on strike for a bigger raise than what was offered.

i was, from day one of w*rking there, non-union. and outs spokenly so. i even started circulating an anti-union petition, which drew Boo-Coo flack.

came down the hallway one day towards one of the units i serviced and the local Union Steward, and her so-w*rkers say me coming and loud talked shit so i could hear.

left w*rk early that day, because i could squish hours, and went straight to the NLRB office in Left LA to file a beef over harassment.

one of the reasons they were so pissed at me is because i had been dropping on page sheets, for which i had the printing receipts, of fun little things like "Top 10 Differences Between The SEIU and a Street Gang" and other love notes.

i also got a strip of SEIU stickers some idiot let out, and put them in employee urinals all over the buildings.

they hated me, hence the threat.

the NLRB folks made me wait a bit, then interviewed me, and i gave them all the gory, names, titles, dates, etc, to include copies of all my writings. she was like, well, don't you think they have a reason to be upset? and i was, isn't the law clear on the 1st Amendment and union intimidation, or do i have to get representation and sue?

not much more was said, and the particular folks in question never had much more to say to me than the bare minimum for the rest of my time there, but it was fun to watch the biggest union shills head for cover like quail when i walked onto a nursing unit.

493 256 I was really deep in denial, but this Russian hacker indictment really beat the truth into me: I now realize that the only reason I didn't vote for HRC was Russian interference in our sacred election process!

499 I am not as down on the "dogs as parasites" article as WeirdDave is. It's more a symbiotic relationship, but I do think there is an element of parasitism in pet vs. human interaction.

Traditionally, dogs helped us as hunters and herders, and cats helped control the vermin feeding on our food stores. But modern pets are a bit different. They don't have a practical purpose besides companionship, and they've developed behaviors that make us want to have them around. In that sense, they are very sophisticated and successful parasites.

Hell, no.

The Russians did us a service by revealing the incompetency.

But did they really want Trump as president? That defies logic. Did they want to sow discord? Perhaps. Look who is so miserable and calling for 'resistance' and veiled calls for violence. The left. Playing right into the Russians game. Good work, idiots.

If so, I would strongly recommend that he buy you out of your share before you let him do this, or sue him to stop, if you do not want to be involved.

There are many dimensions to yesterdays bullshit indictments.

Muller made an error in his Russian indictment in that he indicted companies and some individuals.

He was not counting on the companies showing up for their day in court and demanding discovery.

So yesterday's bullshit indictment remedies that error by naming only individuals.

More than likely the indictment of the Russian companies will be dropped for some bullshit reason and yesterday's indictment will be the one they keep on the docket.

Yesterday's indictment is also being conducted out of the DOJ proper so they can keep using the, "we would love to turn over documents and info but we have this ongoing investigation" excuse.

And this investigation is designed to never be resolved or closed so this shit is going to be going on forever.

554 Calm Mentor, what is your skill set? Are you willing to relocate? Can you work remotely? I only ask because I was in a similar situation a few year back and doing contract work out of state led me to a full time position there.

COJ, my skill set is technical sales, and project management, specific to the AV/IT area. Primarily, AV/IT rental installations and operation.

Absolutely willing to relocate. Nothing really holds me here (North GA area).

I do come with quite the kicker, though. At this time, I am considered partially handicapped. This is due to an illness that came with an injury that left me walking with a cane, and only about 25 % use of my right (strong) arm/hand.

Ironically, a years worth of PT and Occupational therapy would have me ready for the road again. One needs to come first though, and I have not found an employer yet willing to take the chance and invest the time.

This sucks. Thanks for listening.
