That's probably high, but there's a percentage of every ethnic slice that's in this category. a 1/4th of the shit I've heard out of youngsters mouths made me have flashbacks. I know for a fact my mother - God rest her soul - would have beat the brown off of me. And my father made have beat the white off of me after AND made me chew soap while he lectured me.
It's odd to think that Eddie Murphy's stand up I think "Raw" where he had the bit about taking inner city black kids to the burbs fucked with their heads because the white kids just talked crazy to the parents was a true thing. Truth. I tried swimming laps a couple summers ago at the pool of a racquet club to which I belong (and gave up after three different attempts). Bratty, uncontrolled kids running around and jumping into my path -- even diving on top of me! Narcissistic parents were to wrapped-up in their phones or chatting with each other -- and couldn't be bothered.
And, God forbid, you ask the idiots to control their kids. That's never ended well for me the past three decades.
I certainly don't blame the kids -- they receive zero discipline; We're witnessing the end of civility ...

Of course a few years back "youths" were attacking people on North Ave beach and the city, cops and media claimed that people were being taken off the beach in ambulances due to "heat exhaustion". That lie lasted a day or two until people flooded local radio stations telling the real story. They then told another lie about it be a random, minor incident.

There's a generational line where that was true, and then it stopped being true. Every older black comedian talks about how their dad and or mom beat the crap out of them if the crossed a line. But then younger ones... nothing like that. Suddenly parents stopped.
Now I think a lot of parents went too far. It was basically using the kid as a punching bag because they couldn't fight back. But I am all for corporal punishment as a way of discipline -- it has to be done in love and for the child, not out of rage or revenge -- yet done right, its a proper thing.

Just a simple quick example; when my mom was in school in the 60s(?) she was tired of hearing about slavery and that's pretty much it as far as blacks in history are concerned. I share that sentiment, Glenn Beck - before he went fucking insane - had black founding fathers Fridays and the amount of information I learned from him floored me and angered me.
Black folks have been persevering and prospering since emancipation, now granted they weren't in a great numbers but they did it against heavy odds. Why don't we hear about the triumphs? Yes slavery should be in any lesson plan but it's not as if black folks were some helpless lot the entire time.
Barely anyone knows the Fredrick Douglass quote on how to help blacks and I can't find it off hand but basically he says to leave us the fuck alone from a governmental stand point. He said we needed to show and prove we could do it all on our own.
We also need to point out the amount of whites who helped along the way. It would go a looooong way in terms of black self esteem and truth of how united we tried to be and ended up being even if it wasn't perfect from the beginning.

My brother you ain't lying. I remember when he came home and he was so tiny any noise or movement he made scared me to death. Now he's a ham, rolling over, making all sorts of noises and growing like a weed.
Sometimes between 5-6AM he'll take a bottle and be restless, I'll grab him and bring him in bed with me, I'll only be able to get away with this for a little while longer and then these days - rightfully - never come back.

Robert Smalls -- a slave, had the job of piloting a riverboat. After the ACW started, he was assigned to steer a Confederate gunboat, the Planter. One night, after the officers left the ship, he took the boat out, picked up his family and those of the crew, and sailed the boat to the Union forces. He presented the boat to them as a gift. He was 23.
He piloted multiple US ships through the war, including an ironclad.
In 1864 he was an unofficial delegate to the Republican national convention.
Also that year, in Philadelphia, he was ordered to give up his seat on a street car to a white. In 1867, in part because of the incident, Philadelphia integrated public transport. (Rosa Parks who?)
He served in the US House of Representatives and various state offices. In 1912, he wrote:
"I ask that every colored man in the North who has a vote to cast, would cast that vote for the regular republican party and thus bury the democratic party so deep that there will not be seen even a bubble coming from the spot where the burial took place."
I like the guy. I can't imagine why his story isn't taught in every school in the country.

It is not just propping those people up. It is bringing the better people down. I have long said that the K-12 system has been brought down to the lowest denominator while sacrificing those that could soar. Imagine where we could be if we promoted the gifted and let the unable or uncaring students not be an anchor. That is the ultimate "rising tide lifts all boats." As we are now, it is a constant lowering of the bar only to find out it needs to be lowered more. Give people a goal and they will strive toward it. Lowered expectations and they will under achieve. It is human nature.

And he took concrete steps to make that happen. He founded the Tuskeegee Institute to teach black people to read, write, learn math, learn to handle a business, learn a trade, learn to function in society. They had no buildings so the students built the school themselves as part of their education.
That guy was truly awesome. Its very sad that he's treated with such animosity today.

I highly recommend reading "The Negro Family in the United States," by Edward Franklin Frazier, a black sociologist who published it as his doctoral thesis in 1939, IIRC. It's a very interesting account of the state of affairs long before political correctness infected us.
I have downloaded a copy, but now using Calibre to search cannot seem to find it. (Let me know if you're interested, and I'll try to find a way to get it to you.)

I think some of it is well intentioned, but a lot of it is basically racism: black folks are too stupid and helpless to figure shit out, so we'll help them if in return they surrender their basic dignity. Around 1980 when I was working at a steel fabricator's for a summer job, one of the old guys told the anecdote about him and the wife going to Detroit (or Chicago?) BTW, Toronto is having a bad year for murders including fatal gang shootings and stabbings this year... up to 50 on the year that puts us a bit ahead of NYC's per 100,000 but that matches Chicago's total just for June.

I think you and several here have put their finger on something - the breakdown in "cultural authority" of adults, vs. kids. Manifests itself in various ways, but seems to be an element in a lot of what's gone wrong the last few decades.
As for history, I've long thought that social studies/US history, probably jr. high, should have a lengthy segment on the Japanese-American internment and aftermath*. Literal disposession, to top socio-economic status, in a generation - no govt. "help", no lawsuits, no "movement" - nothing but boring hard work and discipline.
Sure, everyone's past experience of injustice is different or distinctive. But it turns out *most* of the "solution" is always ....... EXACTLY THE SAME.
* of course I'd insist that the internment itself be studied realistically, based on facts, and not the ridiculous fairy tale endorsed by the "commission" in the 1980s that simply endorsed all the false and politically popular myths.

The bad in us doesn't come from outside. We're born with it and invent new ways to express it every day. If we ever found a perfect place, we'd ruin it by showing up, because its in us. And that bad in us has to be controlled and shaped and defeated by good that comes from without.
Then, and only then, can we hope to reach out to each other as fellow sinners saved by God, view each other as fellow people without condemnation or condescension. Then and only then can we have the motivation and purpose in life to do better and be better.

Pietism. A life defined by a strict determination to avoid sin, such as dance, drunkenness, sex before marriage, foul language, etc. It was an attempt to be a more outwardly holy person who lived a life of Christianity in contrast to a pretty wicked world.
The problem that I see in this is that its doomed to fail because we're all sinful from inside, and there's no hope. Either you end up lying to yourself (I'm pulling it off!) or you change the definition of sin (that was just a mistake, not a sin!) or you go crazy... or stop being Methodist.

Yeah....I was luckckier. My mum wasn't physical, but she pulled the verbal version of the same shit verbally for about 10 years. Still makes me twitch thinking about it.
When I finally took her beating belt away one day, that's when the psychological abuse really got ramped up. That's when she started locking me out of the apartment.
I really don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but I hope Teh Horde understands why I hardly ever talk about my warped upbringing. I wouldn't have wished it upon my worst enemy.
I was fortunate that I had a couple of friends growing up whose families sorta took me in and let me spend the night when I got locked out.

People who crack and become murderers or serial killers or whatever so often are ones who were horribly abused by especially their mother: who they should be able to trust and know always has love and comfort and protection for them. Yet that's not all it is. Because not everyone who goes through that snaps and starts building a throne out of the bones of children they kill and eat. There's something else, something horribly wrong inside them to begin with that is directed or shaped or broken to become the monster they are by these events.
Others become a better, stronger person as a result of their abuse and the evil they faced. Its like molestation or rape. Some women are crushed and filled with hate and anger or fear. Some become stronger and more loving. Humans are never just one way.

Words like liberal, conservative, and progressive have had different meanings in different times and places.
In England 200 years ago, a "liberal" was one who believe in the free market and extending the voting franchise to those who never had it before. A "conservative" was one who supported the traditional privileges of the hereditary nobility and the landed aristocracy.
Those who wanted to end slavery were certainly "progressive" by any real definition of the word. But they had nothing in common with "progressives" who believe that history is progressing along a path laid down by Karl Marx.
Today's American conservatives want to conserve the Constitution, which was one of the most radical political documents in history. And many of those who call themselves liberal today worship the centralized socialist state, which is totalitarian and tyrannical.
It's a mess. I don't trust any of those words any more.

If you try to compel people to do right, you can make them fake it if you have enough power.

If someone gives you the wallet back, but all the credit cards and money are gone, well, thanks I guess.
If they give you the wallet back with everything in it, wow, you may even give them a reward.
If they saved your wallet by pulling you out of the way of a taxi and picked it up for you, that's going to be pretty memorable, you'll thank that person and never forget what they did.
But if they push you out of the way when you are trying to pick it up, and die in your place... that's going to change you.
Its like Saving Private Ryan, the end of the movie, where Ryan is weeping openly, hoping he's lived a good enough life to make up for all those men who gave everything just to save him. "Am I a good man?"
Salvation isn't just a get out of hell free card. Its the motivation for everything you do from then on.

I agree, the motivation wasn't to be systematic, but that's what it ultimately came down to: they weren't trying to be pietistic, but pious. And the drive to do so, was a system of different things to avoid bad in the world. Wesley was, largely, very gospel-centered and his songs break my heart with their beauty and love of God (and even more his brother Charles).
But ultimately, unless the gospel is the center and focus of your life, the motivation behind your actions, rather than a determined effort to just be better, eventually it all falls apart as I described.

Actually, one could make the case that it was the conservatives who just wanted to be left alone and ended up starting a revolution and founding a new nation just trying to preserve the status quo.
Read David Hackett Fischer's Paul Revere's Ride - at the end there is a nice account of an interview with one of the veterans of the Battle of Concord, in which the veteran cheerfully observes that he and his comrades had never read Locke, Sidney, or Harrington, couldn't have cared less about the theoretical rights of man, weren't upset about the Intolerable Acts, or any of the reasons that are usually given for the American Revolution. Why'd he go to war, then? Because, young man, we had always ruled ourselves, and they intended that we shouldn't.
