Trump Pardons Ranchers Whose Unjust Imprisonment Led to Bundy Standoff

They're not actually the Bundys. They're the ranchers whose fire inadvertently sparked a fire on federal lands, and who were then, bizarrely, prosecuted as terrorists.

The Oregon ranchers whose conviction for arson became the catalyst for 40 days of protests at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016 were pardoned by Donald Trump today.

Dwight Hammond, 76, and his son Steven Hammond, 49 were convicted in 2012 of setting a fire on their own property that then spread to federal land. The Hammonds disavowed the protesters at the wildlife refuge where Robert LaVoy Finicum, one of the occupiers, was slain by federal authorities.

From The Hill:

Both men are currently in prison on five-year sentences, thanks in part to a 1996 antiterrorism law that imposed a mandatory minimum sentence on certain crimes on federal land. The length of their prison terms, in part, fueled outrage at their convictions.

Federal Judge Michael Robert Hogan originally gave the Hammonds reduced sentences in 2012, arguing that the mandatory minimums were unjust. But the Obama administration appealed, and federal Judge Ann Aiken in 2015 imposed the full five-year sentences.

"This was unjust," Sanders said in her statement. Dwight Hammond has served about three years of his sentence and Steven Hammond has served about four of his. Trump's pardon will set them free.

Cue the conspiracy theories from the left and the NeverTrumpers.

Its been kind of a trend, every Democrat President seizes more land in the west. Its a game or something "who can steal the most."

I've posted this before but here's the rundown of how much land the federal government owns in western states:

Alaska 62%
Arizona 39%
California 46%
Colorado 36%
Idaho 62%
Montana 29%
New Mexico 35%
Nevada 85%
Oregon 53%
Washington 29%
Wyoming 49%

Overall the federal government owns thirty percent of the land in the United States, almost 650 million acres.

That's bullcrap. Some for military bases, okay. But they own almost 90% of Nevada for crying out loud.

It would be an interesting court case. 181 EU President Donald Tuck or Tucks or some shit mumbled something , probably in French, about how the US doesn't have any friends and how Europe spends LOTS of money of defense.

Many of the nation states are spending the bare minimum, 2% of the budget. The US is carrying almost all of the cost.

I think Trump should just end NATO, roll it up. F you, you hate us and you don't need us any longer. The entire point of NATO was to protect from the Soviet Union and stabilize Europe. Now that most of Europe has the testicles of a flea and the Soviet Union is gone, good riddence to that huge cost.

And if you're still concerned about Russia, we'll stick around... in Eastern Europe, where we're closer to the danger. And coincidentally, with nations who love us and the costs are immensely lower.

Overall the federal government owns thirty percent of the land in the United States, almost 650 million acres.

And 66.5% of Utah. We are second to Nevada for the most land grabbed by the feds.

Govt was supposed to return most of that land back to the Western states and reneged on the deal. And under Obama it was assumed if returned, we would ruin it like a child ruins a toy. Which is why he grabbed even more land right before he left office.

Never mind that the cities in those federal areas are dying because the younger generation has to flee to find work and survive. Lefties think tourist dollars will somehow make up the difference. It doesn't.

258 These guys know mechanics, husbandry, real estate, commodities, etc etc.

They kind of have to, they are usually so far away from any authorities or resources, they have to do it themselves. And, to be honest, they want to. They can smith up tools, they know carpentry, medicine, botany. Its pretty amazing talking with someone who grew up just learning everything they needed to in order to make it through another year. And usually so humble and pleasant the whole time.

But if, say, someone raped a daughter or killed someone they loved? They'd just hunt you down, kill you, and bury you in some dark corner. Nope, never saw him, passed through. Dunno where he went. Want some coffee?

There were some chemicals mixed in there, but it makes me wonder if all that "Superfund" money for various cleanups isn't just another cash cow for various donors to campaigns. Millions for cleanup, half probably ends up downstream anyway ... or in some desert.

273 Regarding Star Wars, I finally watched, uh well most of The Last Jedi. I came away with two impressions.

1) Its really slow and dull. Boring. Inconceivable for a Star Wars film.
2) The black guy is basically played for humor the whole time. He's a hapless dork who is the butt of every joke. When he finally gets a chance to shine, chubby Asian girl stops him with some BS about love.

I mean loads of stupid crap and grrl power and lame Mary Suism and "what the??" moments but they didn't really stand out because it was like watching paint dry.

Most of the Land administered by the Feds is actually deeded to the States.

The States could toss the Feds out on their asses if they chose to.

But they'd lose all that sweet sweet lucre.

Posted by: garrett at July 10, 2018 06:13 PM (AkocS)

Can you do two minutes on what that means?

Back here in the settled colonies we don't always understand that dialect.

Serious question. How does federal land deeded to states work? TIA

Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 10, 2018 06:20 PM (fuK7c)

It depends. Here in Wash state, there are military bases, national parks, and a lot of national forest. There is also Hanford, on the Columbia River, where the Bomb was created in conjunction with Los Alamos, NM.

Military is it's own world with their own regulations as most are aware, national parks are accessed but you can't hunt, national forests are very large tracts of open land where most hunt and hike.
But as with any Federal Land, nobody can develop it, only walk on it, or ride a horse, or an ATV or pick up truck or motorcycle, depending on the specific area.
Understand that much of the West after WWII was nothing after one got away from the port cities or the towns on the major rivers. The Fed land just "was". People hiked, hunted, camped, even panned a little gold as a hobby, and nobody bothered them.

Then, more people and heavier use caused the Feds to become more active managing it. But they didn't listen to the locals, only DC. It went from an echo chamber, to open hatred of the Fed Gov by many. And these are folks that fly the flag and work their butts off every day.
There isn't as much ranching as before, but the open land is leased out to ranchers, where they let loose their cattle for grazing. There is a history on this issue and from the ranchers view, the FedGov has manipulated the situation for generations to the detriment of the ranchers.

The Bundy ranch incident was the result of the miscommunications, manipulations, and lies for generations between the locals and DC.

Didn't really understand all of it, but he was saying that each member state of NATO gets rotated into the top spot, the tip of the spear I guess. He was saying that Germany had something like 220 Leopard main battle tanks, but only 19 of them were operational. They have 14 heavy lift AC, but none of them could fly due to maintenance issues, and the list went on. PDT is right to beat these dead beat NATO members vigorously about the head and shoulders. We should just walk away and let them fend for themselves, except for some of the old Eastern Bloc countries and Poland.

338 I checked the Bob Dylan website. There are no songs with either "shoe" or "boot" in the title.

There are four songs that contain the word "shoe" and six with the word "boot". One song, "Fourth Time Around", mentions both.

340 Am I right that Bill Clinton is the one who vastly increased the amount of Federal lands in the west?
Posted by: TexasDan at July 10, 2018 05:57

I suspect what you are thinking of is Obozo declared a lot of Fed land as "national onuments", contrary of course to the legislation about such. That meant they couldn't be leased, drilled by private parties, contrary the past use of the land.

343 Alaska 62%
Arizona 39%
California 46%
Colorado 36%
Idaho 62%
Montana 29%
New Mexico 35%
Nevada 85%
Oregon 53%
Washington 29%
Wyoming 49%

Overall the federal government owns thirty percent of the land in the United States, almost 650 million acres.
That's bullcrap. Some for military bases, okay. But they own almost 90% of Nevada for crying out loud.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 10, 2018 06:02

Agreed, since we are over $22 Trillion in debt why not sell a lot of it off? Of course the bureaucratic process would consume a lot of the money but you would hope we come out ahead.

345 He said if we were going to have another civil war
it would start out west in a fight with the feds over land and water
rights. He said the ranchers out there hated the feds.

If you ever see "The Second Civil War" maybe on a DVD or something. Made by HBO back in the mid 90's. Bits of it are on YouTube. Anyway its all about the west and how they fight, push back the Feds who are sending immigrants into their states. Also the flood of Mexicans coming across the border. Many of the western states join up to fight the Feds.

350 I heard one a few years ago about a Farmer or rancher who was objecting to Wildlife Agents on his land he was told YOU MAY OWN IT AND PAY TAXES ON IT BUT WE CONTROL IT and that was still under Bill Clinton who wanted to give Diplomatic Power to the Eco-Aactvists and wanted to use our Military to guard the Rain Forests back when they were yammering that the Rain Forests were being Wiped Out which was a LIE
