Judge Barrett said that the original For ruling had to do with married couples (I believe I was reading in an ambian fog) privacy. It could/would be viewed differently with unmarried person bringing a case forward as the privacy.

First of all, there never was ANY segregation in the entire state of California. Ever.

Second of all, the schools in Berkeley are all most "naturally" integrated, as there is only one high school (so ALL kids of all races go there) and only two junior highs, both equidistant between rich and poor areas.

Third, the Berkeley School District has been controlled by the hard-left since the mid-60s, so the schools were way way ahead of the national curve in compulsory "diversity: and afro-centrioc curricula.

Fourth, I know many people who went to schools BEFORE and during Kamala's time, and trust me, the schools were integrated.

If that's what she's claiming, she's lying through her teeth. Provable.

It passed in 64 but I remember in 1970 Boston and Detroit going through their first experience with busing. It was not pleasant, like in the South, these people were shooting at buses with kids in them. In the south city schools were segregated but county schools not so much. That and blacks and whites had been living together for about three centuries and had a common culture. Boston and Detroit had none of these things.

My dear departed southern Mother in Law used to say that the difference between race relations in the north and the south was that in the south, there were tensions with black citizens as a voting group, but individually blacks and whites got along just fine, and in fact were quite friendly with each other. (I can attest to that, having witnessed that) Northern whites professed to love blacks as a group, but they mostly hated them as individuals.

Not by state law, but by custom.

Of course there is de facto neighborhood-based "segregation" where kids all go to the local schools, because those are the nearby schools. Those, kids in Chinatown end up going to a school in Chinatown that is mostly Chinese kids, etc.

That's not the same thing as an actual Jim Crow Law stating that people of XYZ race are banned from attending a "white" school.

People are still arguing about de facto neighborhood-based natural segregation. In fact, many lefties who want people to live in "communities" now argue for kids to go to the nearest local school, rather than break up the community by sending kids on carbon-spewing buses to some distant location every day.

I think a lot of the protests are backfiring because they are for-hire low life's who know nothing about what they are protesting about.

People at these rallies are being exposed. Either the offspring of the elite left, or just clowns who will take the hourly pay to say anything. Either way, they are not earnest and people see right through it.

Generally true in my time. My grandmother and her sisters were up at the crack of dawn doing good deeds for those in need. Mostly need was defined as black. This came from being raised on a farm. On the farm were many blacks that had never left after emancipation. Not surprising since their choice was either Sharecropping or nothing until mills opened up. Freeing slaves is the easy bit, bringing them into the 20th century is the hard part.

There were 500 police guarding South Boston High at one point, and the first use of metal detectors in a school. It was an extremely violent desegregation.

I grew up in Anchorage.

We just didn't give one fat rat's ass what color anybody was. We disliked most of the oil-kids, who were mostly from Texas or Louisiana, because they were clueless and would be gone in a year or two, but those of us who were born and raised here just didn't particularly notice racial differences.

We have white kids, black kids, native kids, Japanese kids, Korean kids, Chinese kids, Old Russian kids, Mexicans, Guatemalans, Puerto Ricans, Europeans, Africans, Asians, Samoans (by the boatload), hippies, liberals, conservatives, lots of libertarians, Military brats, Catholics, Protestants, atheists, goofballs, dingbats, judges, hookers, plenty of coffee drinkers, etc.

Nobody cares.

Every once in a while we get some race hustler from California trying to stir up trouble, but none of the grievances they push makes any sense up here.

It's a nice change from the way people behaved in Madison, WI, I can tell you that much.

I grew up in two parts of the midwest in the 80s: a racially mixed area of Illinois and lily white rural Wisconsin. There were racial dust-ups in Illinois, but folks did belong to some of the same organizations (cub scouts, for example; our troop met in a black church) and seemed to nake a real effort to get along; our elementary school curriculum made a point of trying to foster good race relations and not without success (and not in a bullshit "yay, diversity" kind of way either). Rural Wisconsin could be a bit less couth, but there was no real animus against blacks (in no small part because none were present to hate). I spent a summer in the late 80s in Colonial Heights, Virginia. My next door neighbor cheerfully informed me on meeting: "I'm not prejudiced, I just hate n*******." First time I'd ever encountered this kind of brazen, unapologetic racism from a white dude. (I saw plenty of it from poor blacks in Illinois though.) YMMV. I'm not sure there's any one generalization that is true about north/south race relations in this country.

Interesting. I had never heard of that. However, according to the Asian American Law Journal, which closely analyzed the 1860 School Law,

"In 1874, the Supreme Court of California handed down a critical decision in an effort to open public education to all minorities. In Ward v. Flood, the court explained that the legislature could not exclude children from the public educational system purely because of race."

So, I stand corrected: between 1860 and 1874, there was some official discrimination in California.

But as the article notes: The same law actually helped spur the founding of the first US schools of any sort for Chinese immigrants, and even so, they were very ill-attended. Back in China, these was basically ZERO education or schooling for the lower classes, so the concept of "sending kids to school" was completely alien to the Chinese immigrants in California at that time. Took many decades for the idea to become accepted.

Regarding paid protestors.

My favorite anecdote was the time that I had to stay at the old Congress Hotel in Chicago for some convention as they were the only place left with rooms. Apparently there was a longstanding labor grievance and labor pickets were present at the front of the hotel. The labor union had outsourced its protests to people they picked up off of the street who never were in the union and never worked at the hotel in question. They were paid minimum wage.

I know because I went up and talked with them and found out that none of them knew anything about the protest in question.

So did the Mexican Army, in the Mexican War. The "San Patricios." They were mostly deserters from the US Army who crossed over to fight for Mexico, and about 50 of them were executed at the end of the war.
