Because she's a Lady she gets a comfy cushion to kneel on so that she doesn't scuff her knees in the last seconds before her head gets chopped off.

As a painting, this is fantastic. I will go look up things after we've exhausted speculation.

That is correct - she and her husband, I believe, were beheaded after Jane's father led a rebellion against Mary who had assumed the throne with popular support ( Henry VIII was a really, really popular King). Jane had stepped down after 9 days a queen in favor of Mary and was imprisoned in the Tower. After her Dad's rebellion well . . . she had to go . . . too many loose ends . . . . if ya know what I mean. Think the end of the Godfather and you'll get what I mean. Could also google - but I , as well, am too lazy. Moar covfefe.

70 Jane was a threat to the crown. English had a tradition of beheading such persons.

Posted by: runner at July 11, 2018 09:44 AM (bUjCl)

71 Interesting coincidence, since this time period is the anniversary of her nine-day reign (in 1553). It was in the period following the death of Henry VIII's son, Edward VI. Jane Grey, who was a grand niece of Henry VIII, was being used by her husband's family to thwart the accession of the next legitimate heir, Mary (Henry VIII's oldest daughter) as Mary was Catholic. As the painting depicts, it didn't end well for poor Jane.

I hope this is helpful to you!

77 I've always liked this painting. There's really nothing too spectacular about it. It's pretty run-of-the-mill Academic classicism, but the way Grey is rendered is haunting. Her face is full of shock. There's no terror there, just a stunned teenager who is having a difficult time trying to understand what's happening, or how she got here.

If I recall, her father used her in his political powerplay for the throne. She and her young husband died, but he got off almost scott-free.

100 42 Lady Jane was post Henry VIII, correct? It was Bloody Mary who did her in? Must Google...too lazy..."

You're correct, although it's even more complicated in that, and was in large part due to the Catholic/Protestant struggle for power after Henry VIII broke with the Pope. Upon Henry's death, his son Edward VI became King, and continued Henry's protestant policies. However, Edward died at the age of only 15. Both of his sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, had previously been decreed illegitimate and banned from succession to the crown, so the closest legitimate legal heir was his cousin, Lady Jane Grey. (who was innocent of any crime) She also was protestant.

Mary's Catholic supporters sensed weakness in her support, and stages what today we would call a coup de'etat, executing Lady Jane Grey and most of her supporters. She became known as "Bloody Mary" for her extensive executions of prominent Protestants who had come to positions of authority during Henry VIII's reign.

Catholicism would have retaken England completely, except that Mary died childless only 5 years after she became Queen. Since her accession to the throne had swept away any questions about her younger sister's right to succeed her, Elizabeth was named her successor, and the rest, as they say, is history.

"Delaroche was not born a painter," Gautier wrote. "He belonged to the
middle classes. He tried to be interesting, which is a matter absolutely
secondary in art."

Pope's plan was to have England become one province of Spanish Empire.
Posted by: Stringer Davis at July 11, 2018 09:39 AM (8ZmvG)

Not exactly; that's not the way they thought then. For examples, look at how England remained England when Phillip was King/Consort. Or how Charles I/V kept his Holy Roman Empire separate from Spain's.

Or for that matter, how Portugal's empire remained administratively separate from Spain during the dual monarch of 1580 - 1640 (though this is the closest union of those I've mentioned.) Scotland and England were under a common crown, but 2 kingdoms for over a century.

The idea that a common crown entailed a single political unit came later. Hell, even in the 18th C, the early opposition to British rule took the form of accepting George III as king, but not rule by a Parliament in which we had no votes. (Of course that changed later.)

191 66 It was Mary who had her beheaded

I think Mary was going to let her live, but Jane's dad took part in a failed rebelion, so Mary decided she was too risky to keep alive
_______________

Yes, it was risky in those days to let a relative who was a potential claimant to the throne live, especially if the reigning sovereign was a Protestant and the relative was a Catholic, or vice versa (as in Bloody Mary's case). There was always a possibility of rebels from the other religion coalescing around the would-be sovereign of their preferred religion and using him or her as their rallying point to stage a coup against the reigning sovereign. That's why Elizabeth I had to imprison and eventually kill her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots. Mary kept allowing herself to be drawn into Catholic plots to kill Protestant Elizabeth and put Catholic Mary on her throne.

Well, NRA has always focused more on legislation and Congress rather than the courts, which is more the Second Amendment Foundation's thing. Which has caused some bitterness when NRA has trumpeted several of these court victories, as some have accused them of only jumping in with support at the end, when all the hard work has been done.

The one year it went absolutely gangbusters with blooms was about 8 years ago when we had the snowiest winter I can remember. Then spring came early and wham! Blooms all over the place.

That means any single Republican can dump Kavanaugh if every Dem votes no.

I hear noises that Manchin and Heitkamp "have to" vote yes, but I don't think it makes a difference. If they can pull off the "I'm a Dem in a +30 or so Trump state," they can pull it off whether or not they vote for Kavanaugh. And if they can't, they can't.

If you don't kill it then it can grow 150 feet in one year, vertically or horizontally it doesn't care. And the instant it touches the ground it will root and grow another 150 feet from there.

I have a next door neighbor that has the stuff overtaking the fence and bushes closest to my yard and house. Apparently they don't care. But every few weeks I have to cut their stuff back before it devours my house. And now it crawled across one of their utility lines and is trying to kill one of my palm trees.

314 Name the source of these quotes:

Looking ahead, to avoid the very real possibility of collective military irrelevance, member nations must examine new approaches to boosting combat capabilities - in procurement, in training, in logistics, in sustainment. While it is clear NATO members should do more to pool military assets, such "Smart Defense" initiatives are not a panacea. In the final analysis, there is no substitute for nations providing the resources necessary to have the military capability the Alliance needs when faced with a security challenge. Ultimately, nations must be responsible for their fair share of the common defense.

....

The blunt reality is that there will be dwindling appetite and patience in the U.S. Congress - and in the American body politic writ large - to expend increasingly precious funds on behalf of nations that are apparently unwilling to devote the necessary resources or make the necessary changes to be serious and capable partners in their own defense. Nations apparently willing and eager for American taxpayers to assume the growing security burden left by reductions in European defense budgets.

The liturgy was basically the same--so were the vestments the priests wore, the stained glass, the prayers, the communion wafers etc. No it was politics, pure and simple. England's two main rivals, Spain and France were Catholic and the Pope was a political player in a way he's not today. Henry VIII and Elizabeth 1 considered themselves Catholic--just not ROMAN (the Pope, ya know) Catholic.

But the Dissolution of the Monasteries were a waste.

Mary Tudor was a crazy and did more for the acceptance of Protestantism than any other single person. She burned 300 'heretics' in five years.

443 Mary Tudor was a crazy and did more for the acceptance of Protestantism
than any other single person. She burned 300 'heretics' in five years.

On this date in 1537 [July 12 ironically enough], Robert Aske was hanged for leading the Pilgrimage of Grace.

Robert Aske, the barrister who had come to the fore of the Pilgrimage movement and had personally negotiated terms with Henry, was among about 200 to suffer death for their part in the affair. In Aske's case, it was against the will of Jane Seymour, Henry's demure third queen and also a Catholic-inclined traditionalist; she made an uncharacteristic foray into state policy by ask(e)ing for Aske's life, summarily vetoed by the king's reminding her the fate of her politically-minded predecessor.
