For starters, these are just new recruits. They are not soldiers, and haven't gone to basic training yet. All they did was sign a piece of paper and hold up their right hand. All of that stuff hinges on all their paperwork and background info being up to par. AP actually used a recruit from Iran and Pakistan as examples. Those of you outraged do realize a lot of people in those countries don’t like America very much, and therefore vetting recruits is very important? Let me put this another way. Most people support background checks on people trying to purchase a gun. Well, these people are going to be given live grenades and automatic weapons and security clearances. When it comes to the background checks for foreign recruits, it's a BFD. I very clearly remember the enlistment process. One of the last things is to sit in a cubicle with a lawyer. They say if you lied about anything, or if your background check isn't as clean as you say, we will kick you out and then sue you to recoup any money we've given you.

If these people have so little regard for our laws, why would you give them guns and entrust them with our nation's security? Army detailed Field Recruiter back in the late 80s. At that time, you needed proof of US citizenship or a green card in order to enlist.
Misdemeanor conviction or higher required a waiver, as did multiple minor non-traffic convictions. The era of enlisting to avoid jail (i.e. a judge acting as a recruiter) was over by then.
Records check was done, unless you were going into one of selected specialties/duty assignments requiting a clearance. Then a full background check was done.

I remember my daughter's pediatrician telling me that teaching her to swim was statistically more important than getting her vaccinated. She was swimming at two years old.

Back in the day we had an annual quota of how many Philippineos we had to take into the Navy each quarter. The line of applicants was enormous. We would not even consider an applicant unless they had 4+ years of post HS education.
Most of them stayed in the US after their enlistment was up or retired from the Navy.

People are different. I took YMCA lessons every year as a kid and still couldn't learn to swim. Also I was made of pure bone and just sank. They'd say "just roll on your back and float". Sorry, that's like asking a stone to float. It may have the best intentions, but it's not buoyant.
Then one year, maybe around 12, it just clicked and I could swim. Got to be pretty good at it in a few years.
But the one time when I was seven and we visited some long lost friend of Dad's who had a pool and said "the way to teach him is to just throw him in"? Yeah, child abuse.

I"m an OSU alum and attended OSU about the time Jordan was there as either a student or as an assistant coach.
The Debasio guy filed a petition regarding sex abuse allegations with the university in April of this year. Jordan wasn't mentioned at all at the time, but the timing of this petition was right after Michigan State settled with the Nasser victims and started paying them $2M each. The petition was reported in the student newspaper and additionally on 11 Warriors, a well known OSU sport's blog and then the Columbus Dispatch.
The allegations were that Richard Strauss , MD had groped, or sexually harassed student wrestlers when he was an athletic dept. physician back in the 1970's. The guy who filed the petition was a former wrestler and then it was finally revealed it was the guy who owns a sports media company in Columbus.
Richard Strauss left the university in 1994. He moved to California and then in 2005, committed suicide.
So we are to believe that 30 plus years ago, an athletic dept MD grabbed the penises of young wrestlers on numerous occasions during exams for sexual reasons and no one has said a word about it for those 30 years.
Right at the end of Baiers interview with Jordan, he read a new report from Politico that said that these wrestlers said that the team had to walk a gawker gauntlet through Larkins hall on their way to the showers.
Uhh, yeah. Larkins Hall at the time was where most of the athletic courts, pools, etc. that were open to all students were located. When you finished whatever athletic endeavor you were attempting, you had to walk across the building to showers and lockers. Big deal. And I can remember doing the gawking along with my female roomates when an obviously buff guy was walking by.
I 100 percent believe Jordan in this case. This case is so bogus and for OSU to have hired Perkins Coie back in April to investigate this is so upsetting. Jordan said in his interview that PC stated that he refused to return their investigative calls, that they couldn't reach him. He then said that since they were able to find a British spy to fabricate a dossier, they should have been able to find a congressmans public email and phone number.
He is being set up and if OSU wants any more money from me, they better correct this.

Speculating. One commonality with fear of water is fear of having one's head under water. If you have that fear practice overcoming it first. After one overcomes that fear learning to swim is much easier and possibly fun.

Heh. Part of the big finale when I was doing resort scuba tours was hand fish feeding. I would take a loaf of bread out with me and go to the same spot everyday and the fish got to know I was coming.
I would have literally hundreds of fish surrounding me and trying to get at the bread. I don't think you would have enjoyed it.

Yeah they hate the woods. It's just how it is. If the cities ever burn and empty out, you'll be safe from the yufs if you're somewhere without pavement.
I love the woods but even I can get pretty freaked out there at night. Or when things suddenly go very quiet. That's really a nerve jangler because it likely means a sizable predator is nearby.

You can get it at CVS. It's completely inert, has no carbs, no calories, no nutritional value. It comes as a powder, you mix it with water and chug it.
Once it's inside you it expands a lot and sort of scrapes everything clean on its way out.

My mother never learned to swim. When she was at a picnic, her classmates decided to help her by throwing her overboard. She was terrified and had to be fished out. They did not know that her uncle, a great swimmer, drowned in less than three feet of water. A leg cramp.Nearby canoeists thought he was goofing around.
Funny enough, my dad worked as a life guard as a teen, and he used to push her around on an inner tube. She made sure all us kids learned to swim.

Conversely, I once read an account of an astronaut making his first spacewalk on the Mir space station. As soon as he exited the hatch, he saw the Earth far below and suddenly got a sense of how high he was.
He was in orbit, so he had no chance of falling. He was on a tether so he couldn't drift away. But he spent a few minutes hanging on for dear life until the feeling passed.

If you're not in severe pain, don't have a fever, and haven't vomited, I doubt you've got peritonitis. Loss of appetite can be a sign, though.

There actually was news news today, amidst the fake news, but as usual it seems to be getting ignored.
The latest twist in the FBI stuff. Memos showing (apparently) pretty clear political motivation in hurrying up the faux "counter-intel" investigation against TrumpWorld fall of '16.
There's a sub-kerfuffle over the timing of this release. But if I understand the structure of the IG's investigations, this timing seems unremarkable. The FISA abuse investigation is ongoing. These memos related not to the Clinton crime wave at State, but to the Keystone Coup attempt.

Yes, good job. It's very hard to explain. I have often said that my father's generation were "John Adams Yankees." They shared a certain cultural background that included pragmatism, asceticism, Puritan work ethic, a love of country life, and an acerbic wit and love of irony. I'm not sure that this type even exists in New England anymore, with all of the immigration and population changes, and I can't make up my mind whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, or just something to be melancholy about.
