Ace of Spades Pet Thread

IMG_3015.jpg

Welcome to the almost world famous AoSHQ Pet Thread. The animals hope you take some time out for the next couple of hours. They are looking for serious couch time and a S-N-A-C-K.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

What a good puppeh!!! Man's best friend no doubt.

July 2 (UPI) -- An Arizona woman branded her golden retriever puppy "a hero" after the dog jumped between her and a rattlesnake that bit the canine in the face.

Paula Godwin of Anthem said she and her two dogs were hiking on a Phoenix-area trail when her 6-month-old golden retriever, Todd, bolted out in front of her foot.

***

What do you mean, you don't like Meow-Mix? It's not Ka-Boom after all.

Yost made a veterinarian appointment for the next day and bought some soft cat food and kitten milk for the baby animal, but that evening his family became suspicious of the loud noises that didn't sound like a domestic cat's meow.

Howdy, part time commenter but mostly long time lurker, Edd Zachary.

A couple of things, a couple of pics of my best buddy, Leo, a 2 year old rescue English Shepherd.

Also a couple of links to a C&W singer from New Jersey that is a dog and gun lover. She was featured a couple of months back in the NRA 1st Freedom magazine in the NRA Country section. She has a new album and is asking for some support to market it, she is crowd sources thru Bandtwango.

I'd like to submit my dog, Masonboro for the pet thread. He's a borderline defective golden retriever who will only retrieve things when they are thrown in the ocean or lake. He also collects rocks from the bottom of the ocean and deposits them on shore. He's actually the 2nd Golden I've had that does that - the other was one I had when I young. Not sure how they think of this stuff but, well, they are dogs. He is an amazing cuddler though - and incredible bed hog. Defenestratus

And here I thought we were the only ones who called our dogs bed hogs. Great photo. Thanks for the submission. Curious as to how dogs get along with the salt water.

Hi,

I'm Joel, long-time lurker. Enjoy your feature.

This is Little Bear, my big black rabbit-eating doggie, who broke my
heart last week after a long bout with some sort of bladder problem that
antibiotics helped sometimes and sometimes not and then at the end WAY
not. We lived together way back in the southwest desert and while he
never achieved his life goal of starting his own outlaw biker club and
killing one of our local free-range calves, he did get lots of Jeep
rides and eat lots of cottontails. I'm not entirely joking - LB spent
most of his outdoor life on a leash or tie-out cable because when he was
young he liked to pack up with the other (all smaller) dogs and go out
to raise hell, and the neighbors did not find it as amusing as he did. I
did not bother locking the cabin door when I went off without him
because he did not approve of strangers coming around his lair.

I expect another dog will come exploit the niche he leaves at some
point, but it's hard to picture anybody really replacing him.

New dogs never replace the old ones. They compliment the memory of the deceased. Sorry to hear of your loss. Thanks for sharing Little Bear with us.

This is Julie, a momdog we’re fostering. She’s a very sweet cuddler. Her puppies are here too. The local shelter didn’t want the puppies to only see the inside of a pound and wanted them to be acclimated to a home before they got adopted. We’ve never fostered any animals before so it’s been quite an experience. Also, our other dogs (Jackson and Carmen The Dog) finally realized that it’s ok and they’re not about to be voted off the island. The puppies are three girls and a boy. They are May, Oreo, Cici, and Bryce. Named by different members of our family. We’ll be sad to see them go and hope they go to friendly homes.

Rihar

Those photos look like the fostering is going well. What a cute group you have there. Good luck on finding new homes for those pups.

This is the black kitty rescued by dumbass from a busy I mean damn busy intersection here in ETEX on Independence Day. Mrs. E said she would have filmed the rescue but thought she might capture me and kitty being squished by a tractor trailer. In retrospect I think she was wise to stay in the truck. Would have made a hell of a video though. -Eromero

It sounds like the dumbass is one hell of a good guy!!!! Thanks for saving the little critter. Hopefully it has at least 8 more lives. Eromero, thanks again!!

H/T and thanks to Laurie for today's opening picture. Also thanks to the Morons who submitted photos of their pets today.

If you have something you wish to submit to the Pet Thread please feel free to reach out to us at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Have a great week!

By the time he was a year old this guy would fetch 8x8x16 in. Cinderblocks like they were tennis balls. He was over 100lbs at one year. I once threw a four foot 2x4 and in twenty minutes he made matchsticks out of it.

Trust me, you do not want anything to do with any sort of non domesticated cat.

I was stationed in Great Lakes at RTC with the Navy and had a buddy there who went to Wisconsin and bought a Mountain Lion cub from someplace. This was in the 1980s and it was semi-legal then.

That thing grew up and was eating two whole chickens a day and trashed his apartment every day. It would literally climb the walls because it was bored. He finally gave it to a rescue place and IIRC it wound up in some wild life park back up in Wisconsin.

My hesitation is that he really seems to be mourning his old family (divorce), so I am not quite sure how to integrate him in and prevent him from running away to find his old family.

Also, since we have always had hyper-intelligent (sometimes hyperactive) dogs, how would we deal with a normal dog?

65 We were asked to adopt a relative's cat so kitty could have outdoor time. At the moment, we think it wouldn't work out because the neighbor's cats think our backyard is their territory and aren't shy about defending it. Anticipating many vet bills if we try the experiment.

73 I have a seven year old neutered male springer. He's been with us almost a year now. He was extremely spoiled but became jealous of their new baby. They were talking about putting him down. I had misgivings. Our now three year old rescued springer has issues with barking. I really didn't want to deal with a new dog. The new dog is now MY dog. He is so happy to see me in the morning. On long trips, he wants to be in my lap. He barks at dogs on the tv. He's learned how to run and how to play with our other springer. We did have some issues between the two boys at first. There were a couple of brief fights but we are past that now.

I'd definitely take in another senior dog. I'll probably never have another dog that takes a victory lap after he poops, like this one does.

77 Love the training video. Dogs are amazing and consistently my very favorite people.

In a couple of weeks, I will be dog-sitting my daughter's dogs while she and her fiancé go on vacation. This means I will have five dogs to contend with: 9 y.o. lazyass lab/catahoula (who is the world's worst retriever, but understands how to be a speed bump in the worst places), 9 y.o. rat terrier (neurotic money pit), 2 y.o. boxer/lab/ACD/AmStaff (scary smart and bouncy bouncy bouncy), 4 y.o. mutt whose DNA is so tangled that even the DNA tests couldn't figure a good percentage of her out (I honestly think that 37.5% mystery DNA is coyote; she looks and acts the part), and.... - this is the one that has me a little anxious - a 50-pound, 5 month old lab/rottie pup. He's adorable, but, man, I don't know if the house will survive.

78 I can attest to former and current golden retrievers being Olympic caliber tennis ball fetchers in salt water. Both swam from the time they were youngsters (usually once or twice a week-just about year round-I am in Boston) and they draw crowds every time. I made sure the new dog got a lot of attention, but made sure my other dogs did too. He's had to learn how to share and that some things just won't be tolerated. I think he might recognize his old family, if they showed up, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't leave with them. He's happy here and I don't get rid of my dogs.

You want crazy, you should have watched the Phillies-Pirates game last night that tied the NL record for the longest nine-inning game and set a new longest-game record for both teams-- 4 hours 30 minutes. My kittehs were fascinated by the fans' noises though, especially when the PNC Park announcer came on at 11:20 to announce that the game had broken the Phillies' record for the longest 9-inning game-- and there were five outs yet to go. It must have been doubly brutal for Buccos fans because the Phillies won, 17-5.

No little kids. I think his main job right now is to follow my daughter around and act like a toddler - to the point that he won't even let her pee or shower alone. I've had rottie mixes before (never owned a purebred; I'm more a 'scan the shelter/rescue' kinda girl) and they've been absolute joys. I'm not worried about his temperament, just his energy, puppy-specific stupidity, and clumsiness.

I do wonder if the people who first had him lied about his makeup, though. He's supposedly 3/4 Rottie, 1/4 lab. As he's grown, though, his big old head sure does look rather Mastiff-y. And he's striped. I suppose technically brindle, but the dog looks like a tiger with those stripes.

Whatever he is, he's going to be amazing.

King Of Queens had a great bit about how lead character Doug's parents were so sheltering, they lied to him forever about his dog, Rocky, ever dying. Instead they kept getting new identical dogs and telling him they were Rocky, leading Doug to think his dog was 27 years old.

When Doug confronts his parents: "OMG!! You mean this is Rocky II?!!"

His dad: "Actually it's Rocky IV."

She weighs 70 pounds and was manufactured from bone, muscle and springs and her dad was a pit bull. We found that out as she grew up.

If I had to guess, the DC Attorney decided that the time and cost of taking all of these people to trial, and the likelihood of acquittal being high with jury trials, it just wasn't worth it in terms of the time and resources that his office would have to put in. (Trust me, the jury pool in DC is small and it's not uncommon for people to serve multiple times. There would be people ready to acquit just by the virtue of, "I'm here for this!?!?!")

Chess thread up.

That story was odd, though. She was apparently uninjured enough to follow the dog. She could have regained her bearings and continued the hike. Far from being rescued, she was probably making sure the dog got home as a courtesy. She also had a locator beacon with her that she eventually used anyway. She was never in any danger.

234 Late to the party as usual.

Votermom: If you are looking to open a bookstore, whether new, used, or a combination, I would very strongly advise you not to. I owned a new bookstore for about twenty years, one I started from scratch. It's not just Amazon, it's the entire internet. There are a zillion places to purchase new and used books these days. Not to mention your friendly, local library, which has taught all of America that books have no monetary value because you can just get them for free.

If you are still thinking about it, my second piece of advice is to go work at someone else's bookstore, chain or indie, for a couple of years to learn the ropes. You need to know not just how to order from publishers, but also wholesalers, aka jobbers. You need to learn about return policies, how to return unused books to a publisher or jobber. You need to learn where to get magazines and how to return magazines from both your mail order and local distributors. Make your mistakes at someone else's expense, not your own.

Above all, know your market. Omaha is down to a couple of Barnes & Nobles, one general bookstore, a chain used bookstore, and a couple of religious bookstores. Even the Twin Cities area is losing bookstore right and left. Does your town prize intellectualism or is it anti- intellectual?

And, frankly, right now, the publishing houses are paralyzed with their fear of Amazon. Their policies make no sense. Nothing they do makes any sense.

Right now is a really bad time to start an independent bookstore. But I wish you the best of you decide to take a run at it.
