Bonus ONT

Guess what chillins? You got me again tonight. Mis Hum asked me to cover for him, but I forgot that tonight was my friend's annual 4th of July party. Guy lives out in the country, and not only does he put out a mean spread, but he spends thousands of dollars on a great fireworks show. I hope I A) remember and B) am not too drunk to post this at 10. Why don't we start with a bitchin' van?

Feeding the gods: Hundreds of skulls reveal massive scale of human sacrifice in Aztec capital

Couple of interesting things here. First, note that many anthropologists have denied the veracity of reports about this practice from conquistadors. I think it may have something to do with a reflexive antipathy for western Europeans; they were colonizing the area, and thus they were “evil”. I say this because there has been quite an argument going on on Twitter since this find was announced, and a great many academics are doing their “Who are we to judge? All cultures are equal” dance.

No.

I am a human being, endowed by my creator with the ability to judge the relative merits of things, and I say that this was pure evil. The Spanish were right to wipe these people out, it's a damn shame they didn't get there sooner. As a friend of mine likes to say “Why yes, my culture is superior to your culture".

Second, I also got in a discussion with someone who claimed that there was no way that people volunteered to be sacrificed. Sure, most of those killed were slaves or captives, but some weren't. I remember when I visited Chichen Itza that I was surprised to learn that the players sacrificed after a Mesoamerican ballgame were the victors. These men worked very hard to get good enough to earn the honor of being killed. I see this a lot with people, the assumption that our values are universal. They're not. Human beings are like computers. The hardware is universal, but the software (culture) can make people behave in very different ways. I'm not sure if refusing to recognize this is a Western conceit, or a human one. I suspect the later.

Look! Up in the Sky! It's a Bird! It's a (splash)...OMG! GROSS!

The 'Resistance' Is Turning into a National Lynch Mob

America is not magically immune to social unrest. There’s no law of God or nature that says so. When one political faction decides that losing an election is the same as enduring Nazi occupation, and every means of sabotage and persecution is legitimate… well, that’s how you end up in a state of civil war. Come November, voters should remember which side is trying to provoke that.

Funny Stuff from a Moron

In addition to being a doctor, an author, and an artist, Moron R. M. Huffman is also a poet. He describes these as a cross between “Fractured Fairy Tales and Lewis Carroll”.

It's

27 I remember the Aztec sacrifices and cannibalism were very controversial back in the '70s. Marvin Harris (Cannibals and Kings) spoke at our school, and there were protests with mass printed signs. Academics refused to contemplate cannibalism, and downplayed the sacrifices. I was prompted to do some of my own research. Cortez' men were battle-hardened soldiers and they wrote about wretching at the stench of the temple district. The scale of it was incredible. The Aztecs were literally the Nazis of Central America.

32 More scenes from the incipient civil war:

There was a riot in Portland this evening.

A right-wing group of Trump supporters got a march permit, gathered in an area controlled by the Feds, started the march, got one block into the march along the approved march route, and were immediately pelted with eggs, garbage, and lit fireworks by Antifa.

The Portland police stood by and did nothing.

I guess Antifa now controls who is allowed and who isn't allowed to march in Portland, since Portland city government isn't going to do anything to protect people with a legitimate march permit.

My BS is in Central American Archeology and Anthropology. Nothing new here. There are entire middens of human remains laying around in the Aztec jungle area, here and there. Most were ground up for fertilizer, but they are still there. Skull mountains and entire sink holes and pits full. Some butchered for meat, some not. An End Times degenerate culture that built on the Mayan and Toltec/Olmec and several other precursors who were far from lily white, so to speak, in these areas. But La Raza, er, sorry, I mean the Aztecs are, er, were vile...

And entirely voluntary as societies in the sense that they were far from resource poor. It wasn't Donner Party time. 'The Jungle Will Provide' and you have to be a fucktard to starve there if you are local and are raised in that environment. Even cities of 50K thrived.

I do wish Spain didn't burn all the Mayan books though, those would be a real treasure. But as to whacking the Aztecs? AMFYOYO...

63 One of the principal reasons why Cortez won is that the surrounding tribes were kinda sick and tired of being made into human sacrifices. There were maybe 100,000 Tlaxcalan warriors supplementing the small army of Cortez. There must have been large - and probably unrecorded - battles between the Tlaxcalans and the Aztecs and these may have done more to conquer the Aztecs than did the forces of Cortez..

64 I was late for the Shakespeare thread, but if you want to see a really interesting take on the tension between artistic vision, text, and money, check out the series Slings and Arrows. (Very strong language warning for that, btw.) The first season follows a production of Hamlet, the second MacBeth and Romeo and Juliet, and the third and final one does Lear. It's loosely based on working at a real Shakespearean festival in Canada, and the premise is that the new artistic director used to be a fantastic leading stage actor who was driven insane by playing Hamlet (and also by his fiancee cheating). Really interesting. I have them on DVD; I don't know if it's streaming anywhere.

Also highly recommended.

107 63 One of the principal reasons why Cortez won is that the surrounding tribes were kinda sick and tired of being made into human sacrifices. There were maybe 100,000 Tlaxcalan warriors supplementing the small army of Cortez. There must have been large - and probably unrecorded - battles between the Tlaxcalans and the Aztecs and these may have done more to conquer the Aztecs than did the forces of Cortez..
Posted by: Skookumchuk at June 30, 2018 10:09 PM (CeJUf)

MAY have done more? Three hundred conquistadors, armed with swords and blunderbusses, conquered an empire of a million people.

You bet your ass other tribes were front and center on that. Otherwise, the first charge would have resulted in 300 dead conquistadors and 999,700 jubilant Aztecs.

170 that book I mentioned 'When Montezuma Met Cortes' proposes that Moctezuma II took Cortes captive more than the other way around. Moctezuma was hoping to figure out Cortes' technology and if Spain could help him. There were still some parts of central America which weren't under Aztec domination, like Michoacan. Also Moctezuma (who wasn't a fucking idiot, idiots didn't last long in that place) wanted to prepare for whatever would be coming after Cortes.

That part of it ended badly for everyone; Moctezuma got killed and Cortes' men got ejected from Tenochtitlan.

Although less badly for Cortes, who survived, and got allies.

213 There's an episode of Mom that kinda pisses me off.

In the show, since the second (?) season, Allison Janney's character, Bonnie, is the building manager where she and her daughter Christy (Anna Faris) work.

Anyway, they did an episode where everyone is so angry that Bonnie won't do her job as building manager (fixing things, keeping up the property), they start up a petition to contact the owners and get her fired.

So Bonnie retaliates by spying on everyone and threatening to expose their secrets at the tenants' meeting.

Does life, unfortunately, often times work that way? Sure. Does it make sense in the episode? No, especially given Bonnie is already portrayed as extremely selfish and entitled. IOW it was typical Chuck Lorre boomer trash.

Thankfully, most episodes of that show are better.

225 Basic human sacrifice was about the worst of what the Aztecs did.

To quote wiki;
According to Bernardino de Sahagún, the Aztecs believed that, if sacrifices were not given to Tlaloc, the rain would not come and their crops would not grow. Archaeologists have found the remains of 42 children sacrificed to Tlaloc (and a few to Ehecátl Quetzalcóatl) in the offerings of the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan. In every case, the 42 children, mostly males aged around six, were suffering from serious cavities, abscesses or bone infections that would have been painful enough to make them cry continually. Tlaloc required the tears of the young so their tears would wet the earth. As a result, if children did not cry, the priests would sometimes tear off the children's nails before the ritual sacrifice.[7]
Note *none* of this is controversial. Everyone who has studied the history knows the Aztecs did stuff like this. Some people just don't *care*.

Part of the problem is that any conservative candidate that finds him or herself to be the "swing vote" is offered the world by the left. Money, adulation, sex - you can have what you want...and often that is combined with a pretty serious stick. Have something in your history? The left will find it. And if they can't find something they *will* make it up.

Remember how in the heat of impeachment the left managed to destroy both Newt and his replacement by somehow discovering they were having affairs?

And yet Dennis Hastert survived...and did very well for himself until he was no longer useful...

Maybe a promise that his replacement would be a certain person or that it would not be Willet or Pryor. Plus, Kennedy knows next year the senate will be a lot more red and conservative, so less likely a moderate would be named. Kennedy spent 30 years in DC ad it would be hard to believe that he wasn't somewhat co-opted by the left. Maybe that he would stick to the Federalist list. After next year, Trump will probably discard the list. He will have cemented his support with the base, especially if Roe gets tossed.

You ought to read some of the conspiracy theories the left is ginning up about Kennedy's retirement.

Kennedy's son is an executive with Deutsche Bank (Douche Bank), which Trump has done business with big time. They've loaned Trump billions over the years.

So one is that Kennedy's son is on all this Russian collusion business, and Trump offered him a pardon if Kennedy would resign.

And then there's less insane stuff that Trump has been wining and dining Kennedy. Something about Ivanka schmoozing with the family.

There was a post on JJ's morning thread about Muwaji's law a few weeks ago.

Indigenous tribes in Brazil ritualistically kill infants that are twins (bad luck) or have any perceived birth defects. These practices are defended by religious rights and tribal leaders and PC politicians have put a kibosh on outlawing these practices. The people trying to introduce this law outlawing such practices, Suzukis, are Christian missionaries. I find it interesting because Japanese tend not to be religious.

Posted by: REDACTED at June 30, 2018 11:30 PM (STPlW)

Roe probably won't get gutted all at once. More likely, presuming the votes are there, that it will be whittled down over a number of cases, each slash attacking individual aspects. Then, with newer and more numerous precidents, Roe can be RU-486ed.

Similarly with Gay Marriage. It would make sense to destroy "there is not difference between same and different sex coulples except irrational animus" by picking cases that show the lie of that, such as presumed paternity of a pregnant woman's spouse. Establish that there is a real difference and further action can follow.

As a friend of mine likes to say "Why yes, my culture is superior to your culture".

Considering our culture has legalized and promoted and celebrated mass murder of babies in the womb --- and selling dead baby body parts for profit --- going on 4+ decades...

one political party considers it a "woman's right"...

and the majority of women in our culture support this...

I'd say our culture is most definitely not superior to other cultures when it comes to human sacrifice. Because that is exactly what abortion is... killing/sacrificing a baby for the convenience of the woman carrying the child.

Thousands of years from now, people will be excavating North America and will find the remains of Planned Parenthood buildings. And they will be taken aback in horror as they discover what they were used for in the same way people now are judging the Aztecs and other cultures which participated in human sacrifice.

407 Ben Shapiro talked to Bill Maher, and in an act of masochism I watched. Here I decided not to provide a link, but I will tell you everything of note in the 11 minutes.

Shapiro (who is not tall enough to ride the Supreme Court) was previously on Dave Rubin with Jordan Peterson and Eric Weinstein. There he said that he hoped that Bill Maher would talk about politics and ideas, and not all about Trump.

Of course you know, if Shapiro decided to talk about pancakes, then after 20 to 30 seconds Maher would figit and turn the topic into an insult about Trump. EG "Pancakes, flat like the shape of the Earth according to Trump voters." *audience laugh* *audience clap* Maher's hero Hitchens told him that Bush-is-dumb jokes are jokes for dumb people. This haunted him, but it is all he knows, and he can't learn. Someday he will slip up and refer to Trump as Bush the same as Pelosi did.

This chasm of douchery will eventually force most people, even fucking Shapiro, to don a red MAGA cap. How did a man with a 3 in charisma ever get a show, let alone host on tv for decades?

Maher asks "Well all he thinks about is helping Russia." Shapiro spells out very quickly how he armed Russia's enemies in Crimea, and that US army killed 200 Russian mercenaries in Syria. I might add a third point, that the US is now an energy exporter. It give the US leverage with everyone, but especially Russia's influence in Europe and the middle east. Maher rolls his eyes and mentioned how Hitchens got something wrong and applies it to Shapiro. It is probably the first time Maher has heard these news items.

Maher impresses that Trump should be impeached if he colluded with Russians. He thinks he is making the bar unbearably low to get Shapiro to agree. The correct counter is to ask what he will concede in the face of hypothetical undeniable evidence. If Trump nukes Russia, will Maher say that he didn't collude?

The answer is obvious. He would say that Trump nukes a country to cover damning evidence about to come out. His unwavering devotion to "17 intelligence agencies" is unbreakable so long as Iraq doesn't come up. Hillary, as a senator, voted to invade Iraq. If it wasn't for Rs and Ds he wouldn't have a goddamn opinion about anything.

408 Maya archaeologist here.

The Aztec-Spanish story is a little more complicated. One, the Aztecs weren't really an empire, they headed a tight coalition of city-states called the "Triple Alliance." Once that hegemony was cracked, it really became a rebellion lead by a small coterie of Europeans lead by Cortez.

Two, the Aztecs actually won a number of battles and drove Cortez out of the capital and towards the sea. He convinced a large army of 5000 soldiers, sent to arrest him, to switch sides. Even, the next few battles were draws as the Aztecs figured out how to neutralize most of the European advantages. Lots of Spanish died and even more Mexica.

Three, the Aztecs were winning when smallpox and influenza finally broke them. What defeated the Aztecs was not (just) crossbows and arquebuses, but Old World diseases. This is not to slight the political canniness of Cortez and La Malinche, who were absolutely ruthless in pressing the advantage.

Four, the Aztecs totally engaged in human sacrifice and cannibalism. It is well-documented ethnohistorically and archaeologically. However... the 16th century Hapsburg Empire with its inquisitions, auto-da-fes, pogroms, religious wars, and tortures, was no moral superior to the Aztecs. Yes, in 1512 they sacked the Aztec capital. They also, in 1527, sacked Rome. This was two bloody medieval states beating the hell out of each other.

The Ottomans were still worse, natch.

419 The Maya are a completely different group. In the 16th century, they were a series of small, town-based kingdoms. All the old urban traditions were long in the past. They and the Spanish fought throughout the 1500s and 1600s, the last Maya kingdom falling at the end of the 17th century. Even then, periodic rebellions kept the Empire at bay and the Maya even had their own small state, Chan Santa Cruz, for a good part of the 19th century. The British even sent an embassy there. It officially surrendered to Mexico around 1915.

439 Thanks for weighing in, Keith.

One, the Aztecs weren't really an empire, they headed a tight coalition of city-states called the "Triple Alliance."

This was true... as of the middle 1400s.

By the late 1400s Tlacopan was roughly in the position as the member of the threesome who is off in the corner beating off whilst the other two, Texcoco and Tenochtitlan, are having all the fun.

As for Texcoco, Moctezuma II forced Cacama"-tzin" upon them, and seems to have been working toward making them a puppet.

And I'd propose that the Habsburgs (or Hapsburgs, I don't know how to spell it) for all they were inbred as fuck, bigoted, and incompetent at holding an empire together; were not running the death-cult on nearly the level (corrected for population) that the Aztec Sun God was.

The undesirables of society were ritually castigated, tortured, and killed in religious ceremonies, "acts of faith," blessed by the medieval church. This was done in large numbers, very large numbers. This is not collateral damage by bombs going astray. This was done in the context of sacred ritual.

468 Late to the ONT.

Query for Maya Archaeologist: For many years I have cherished a personal theory that the Aztecs were the losing side in a civil war amongst the early South-Western Puebloans.

The Aztecs mythology is that they traveled for over a hundred years South, arriving in 1325.The abandonment of Mesa Verde would seem to coincide with that. The evidence of civil war and canibalism amongst the early Puebloans seems solid.

The insistence of modern Puebloans that THEIR ancestors did not practice canibalism seems to fly in the face of the evidence - unless their ancestors did not - the other guys did.

My one brief trip to Mexico brought my up short when I realized the similarities between Aztec building methods and those in Mesa Verde, Chaco, and elsewhere in the the Southwest.

I don't have the requisite degrees, so my attempts to discuss this with academics has always been meet with derision.

Cannibalism was repugnant to the Jews from at least the time of Moses, and likely before. It was likewise repugnant to the Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia, Pope Alexander VI at July 01, 2018 12:57 AM (GXOTw)

474 Four, the Aztecs totally engaged in human sacrifice and cannibalism.

Posted by: Keith Eppich at July 01, 2018 12:17 AM (lf32P)

========

Eppich stupidity. Whatever you know about archaeology you don't know shit about "moral superiority". You equate a civilization that casually endorsed the regular sacrifice of human beings and cannibalism as a good thing, with one that thought that wrong dogma was dangerous and evil. You can disagree with the latter, but you can't just lazily assert that it is as bad as the former with no further explanation.

Then your last sentence seems to assert that just because two nations may be at war with each other, therefore their cultures cannot have any moral superiority to any other culture. Is that what you are saying? What exactly do you mean by "This was two bloody medieval states beating the hell out of each other."

You may be talented dusting off rocks, but maybe you need to dust off the liberal crap sitting on your brain before you venture your opinions on ethics.

I don't know. I do recommend 1491 and/or I solicit opinions on it since we're doing Maya/Aztec tonight.

(Which is good, because I can't always remember who was who at Shiloh).

There are a couple of premises in 1491 that I find fascinating.

One is that the exploration wave around 1500 reported all sorts of amazing cities and civilization. When the settlement wave around 1600 showed up all of that was gone and a lot of people called bullshit on the exploration wave's reporters. Our author posits that the explorers were telling the truth and that everybody died in between from European diseases.

The other is that the Amazon was not exactly God's gift of fertility, but it was a garden. Lots of evidence that all the fruit and nut trees were cultivated and the land was terraced and such, all of which was overgrown after everybody died.

No. No, from an archaeologists' point of view, they really weren't.

(I mean, unless you are specialising in Mayapan and other Terminal Post Classic sites from the 1400s. But - correct me if I am wrong - most Mayanists are hunting where the hieroglyphs are, which is the Choltian-speaking region during the 200s-800s.)

The Copts and the Greeks still exist today too. But that does not mean the Egyptologist studying Tuthmosis III has authority on the Lelantine War in Greece.

At least the human sacrifice practiced by Aztecs and Hapsburgs held a ritualistic element. Ottoman predation lacked that and functioned solely as instruments of genocide and political terror.

Yes, there were Maya in the isthmus of Teohuantepec and the Yucatan peninsula in the 16th century. They fought a war against the Aztecs in Soconosco. Cortez himself visited Tayasal, the Maya island-fortress in the Peten. Prior to the Conquest, he visited the Maya shrine of Cozumel. Maya archaeologists move across the chronological sequence, although the Classic period does get an awful lot of attention. I've excavated Classic Maya cities as well as Spanish missions.

If you compare the results on 1 individual ... well, even then the Aztecs lose.

"Five Letters of Cortes to The Emperor" details a lot of gruesome things the Aztecs did, including keeping captives ... for later. At least one instance is documented several months AFTER the Spaniards won.

Now compare numbers, and length of time of the practices. Magnitude and duration have importance.

Recall that The Spanish Inquisition started shortly after the end of The Reconquista. There was still a danger of Muslim revolt within Spain, as there were still Muslims in Spain. Judged by today's standards (which is what you've done) The Inquisition looks like an ongoing atrocity; judged by the times, perhaps it was an act of self preservation.

The Aztec practices ... feel free to make a similar argument for them.

Thank you for this answer.

The Ottomans survived as a culture for quite a while, and under great pressure. They were rough on a lot of people, like the Nazis were rough on those they hated.

But the Ottomans seeded their own defeat by driving the skilled and educated out of the Eastern Roman Empire and starting the Renaissance in Italy and Western Europe.

We can argue if at some point Evil is a continuum, or when society or culture becomes evil. We could amend the Scrogg decision point to make a culture evil, but then, who is representative of that culture?

505 I agree with Mr. Eppich. And, please note, in Jennings book he has the old Aztec contemplating his approaching burning as a sacrifice similar to the Aztecs priests.

Let me here note, as well, that we are here discussing atrocities from the past - the and every single one of them was 'justified' as religious imperative and, thus, moral.

Who was the guy (I'm not going to look it up) who in the Cathar crusade said 'Kill them all, God will know his own.' when told that his men couldn't identify the Cathars in the town from all the others?

Let's talk numbers. Give me your numbers. How many Europeans killed in the inqusition, and how many victims of the Aztecs.

And let's do actual deaths, not famines, plagues and shortages.

I would ask that you not hide behind "even one death diminishes me" because we are talking relative terms, and relativity requires numbers of dead to show what is related to what.

18th century accounts put the numbers around 30,000. The contemporaneous witch-hunts might double that number. It's a lot of dead people.

Can you trust these histories? Not really. But you can't trust the Spanish scale of Aztec atrocities either. We do know they did it. Contemporary accounts put both numbers pretty high. We do know it was a common practice with lots of witnesses, in Europe and in Native America.

(I hope they do, btw, there seems to be a lot of you who know more than I do so I'd like to sit and watch).

So, the rant is about Soviet casualties in WWII. The Sovietologists say things like 20 or 30 million dead compared to our 600,000.

Almost all of those dead were due to intentional famine in Ukraine and other self inflicted shit. Maybe 3 or 5 million combat deaths?

The really big numbers are just Stalin hated everybody and starved them to death.

556 Kindletot - let me take up Mr. Eppich's banner. (he seems to have left us for other pastures)

The issue, for me at least, is did THEY see their behavior as evil/barbaric. Posit this - the Aztecs genuinely believed those deaths, and the manner of them, were necessary to the continuation of the culture, and indeed, life itself.

500 plus years later we may laugh and scorn such impossible beliefs. But for them (absent those 500+ yrs of science and philosophical/ethical discourse) this was reality itself.

It was not so very much different from the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the Ottomans. They were prosecuting religious wars - spreading the word at sword point. They saw no evil in their behavior.

Evil is (to my mind) the deliberate and intentional actions by people who KNOW DIFFERENT. If the are taught, led, and believe their behavior is moral they will feel no guilt. Neither will their 'true-believer) leaders.

560 I'm not a scholar, but from reading bits and pieces it sounds like ritual human sacrifice was pretty universal at a certain stage of cultural development. I'll say it was during the Neolithic stage after agriculture was developed. I don't know if hunter-gatherers practiced it.

The Egyptians buried servants with the pharoahs, and I think the early Chinese did that as well. There are the bodies found in bogs in Celtic Europe.

As civilizations developed, they "grew out" of that stage. I don't know about Asian cultures, but in the Judeo-Christian tradition we have the stories of Abraham and Isaac where God said "you don't have to do that anymore" and later Jesus who served as a symbolic sacrifice for all time.

Eventually the more advanced cultures lost all memory of actual human sacrifice. So when the Christian Spanish arrived in the New World, they were horrified to see it live and in person.

The Ukraine famines of the 30's was separate.

20-30 million is reasonable. At least 10 million dead in the Soviet military, who were not starving unless they were in a German POW camp.

The Soviets were brutal to their own population in their "win". Think forced migrations, penal battalions, the million lost in the Leningrad Siege, and more lost in every urban or rural assault, by either side. Plus the Nazis were also brutal to the local populace. Lots of forced labor and executions there.

No, they didn't "know" anything of the sort. They knew that society viewed it as such, certainly, but did they themselves feel guilt for their actions? I don't think so. They thought what they were doing was just awesome, and the reason they didn't want to get caught was because then they wouldn't be able to do it again.

570 Lurking Cynic, the problem is if that is a call for me to accept those deaths because all cultures are equal.

Look, this is a technique to drive a political opponent down so they can be run over. All cultures are equal but your group should know better so you should repent, show your belly and let us rip you up. Those others? Less good than you and unreachable because inherent racism. Anyways we are talking about YOU, not them.

and from there you get to fork your opponent in a Kafkatrap about how trying to deflect to other groups prove there is something wrong, and all attacks and punishments are valid for that reason.

Wassname didn't shift to the Ottomans until he got cornered, so I will ignore that, as for the rest, his original argument was of relativity between Cortez and the Aztecs. I admit reading The Conquest of New Spain made me wish both sides could die horribly, but I think the weight of nastyness was with the Aztecs with that whole society based on torture and murder to make the rain fall and the sun rise

Posted by: Kindltot at July 01, 2018 01:58 AM (2K6fY)

571 > The guys who stopped the slave trade.

Yes. The thinkers of the European Enlightenment (particularly the UK form) were pretty much the first people in the history of the world who decided that slavery was WRONG, and then took steps toward ending it.

Earlier people didn't certainly want to be slaves themselves, and probably would even have admitted that being a slave kinda sucked, but they didn't think the institution was wrong in and of itself. Oh, you can probably find an isolated thinker or two in other cultures who argued against slavery, but as far as it becoming a wide-spread belief that it was wrong and should be stopped? Only Whitey did that.

Abortionists know they are killing children. The three that I have known placated their consciences with political placebos and round table group discussions reassuring those that wavered. When I challenged them on the good/evil issue they got VERY defensive. Two of them later found other work - both in hospice care.

Historical morality is, however, very relevant. Judging the behavior of members of long dead civilizations may make us feel good, but we learn little. The escalating behaviors of our political left can be better understood when we examine Aztec sacrificial practices.

We can learn from studying and decrying those past cultures. We. can teach present and future cultures 'a better way'. The Jihadi decapitators, however, are unlikely to listen until some Islamic leaders convince them God (Allah) has a different plan.

You and I don't believe the extremist dogma of Islam - but the evidence strongly suggests that they do. The apocalyptic belief that the end of civilizations will bring on a new era of benevolent and universal Islam is (for us) hogwash and evil. But for the suicidal bomber it is the greatest act they will perform.

Posted by: Lurking Cynic at July 01, 2018 02:14 AM (sycC0)

583 Bander, the moral calculus doesn't really change, but no, Soviet losses directly from the war were pretty large. The casualties (not all KIA) just by the fall of '41 were over 4 MILLION.

Yes, the Ukrainian repression/famine was an epic atrocity involving millions of murders, the "purges" and Great Terror added many many more, the Civil War and Revolution had a huge butcher's bill.

And one can fault Soviet tactics for some % of the combat casualties against Germany. Rokossovsky was running your "front", lucky you, at least compared to having Zhukov. But a lot of the Soviet losses were due to incompetence, lack of preparedness (not just in June '41, but in hastily launched operations using green troops and officers).

But this too was often forced by circumstances. The USSR famously had lots of space to retreat, but could not give it *all* up, and to avoid being pushed back to the Urals had to throw counter-offensives at the Germans, which they did throughout late '41 and all of '42 - almost all of which failed.

585 However, I do believe your idea of the Aztecs being refugees from Chaco and Mesa Verde is very good. I would want to look also at pottery styles crops and agriculture techniques, especially watering and crop management for arid farming.

It may be just that a successful culture coalesced in a few areas and pushed south into Central Mexicoand adopted the local agriculture and spread it north. The timing of adoption of the three sisters agriculture (beans corn squash) could indicate also when contact with the south was made.

If that Ag was adopted, say from conquering the Maya, we have to figure out how and why it spread north to Mesa Verde, but no further. Now if it was adopted by the Maya conquering or trading north, then we need to find traces of that culture in the archeological record.

593 Not that he needed schooling in any manner of ruthlessness or murderous tyranny, but Stalin as I recall it actually took his "inspiration" for penal units from the Germans, who were using them already in 1941.

In his infamous Order No. 227 ("not one step back", "nyi shagu nazat") of July '42, when the Soviets had been pushed back nearly to Stalingrad and to the North Caucasus, Stalin ordered creation of such units for insubordinate or cowardly personnel, as determined by military tribunals in the field.

Interestingly, many historians and contemporaries alike credit Order No. 227 with helping slow the dissolution of the Red Army that was taking place in the face of German offensives in the south. Same for Hitler's similar order of no retreat in the face of the Soviets' first winter counter-offensive near Moscow in '41/'42 - without which the German position may well have ended up being disastrously worse than it was.

Sometimes even evil, mad, mass murdering tyrants make the right call.

601 There's no incipient civil war, it's actually worse than that. There's a stunning degradation of standards, integrity, public institutions, and the civic culture - which sometimes manifests itself in kinetic incidents like today in Portland.

Or, last week in Portland - when local "law enforcement" refused to enforce the law against people illegally blocking a federal facility (ICE office).

Or just about a year ago, in C'ville, when a governor and local law enforcement failed to maintain order and protect lawful assembly (oops, guess who the ones with the right to assemble were).

It seems that just about nothing can actually provoke the feds (AG, Trump) into actually doing anything about the lawlessness that has eroded the basis of the society. Lawsuits and pin-prick funding hassles are extremely weak sauce in response to what we're seeing.

Maybe so. I don't know the background other than what I read in the earlier comment, but mass street demonstrations tend to be an activity of left-wing collectivists.

If it makes you feel a bit better, the local rag headlined that "hundreds" of people rallied downtown this morning to protest children separated from their parents at the border.

But, looking at the photos, all of which were shot at close quarters, it becomes apparent that there may, generously, have been one hundred there.

Summer Saturday in Anchorage, most folks are either out fishing, camping, hiking, or at Arctic Thunder this weekend, at least. Nobody saw that "protest" except the newspapers. And even fewer gave one fat damn.

I got terrible news, My estranged little brother (35 or so years now) killed himself. The fucked up part is that I'm just numb. shocked not sad. Suicide is never an option. ( the good moral one anyhow) my chickenshit little brother who never took any responsibility in life. Took the ultimate fucked up way out of life. Don't do Drugs mkay! Dammit. fuck, fuck fuck.

611 I don't know if I should feel guilt. I'm just blank, I feel nothing but anger at what he's done to my family. My parents my other brothers, his kids and grandchildren his two x-wives. I haven't had a real conversation with him since we were kids. I'm 50 this year. That is a long time not to talk. such a waste. his choice not mine. Fucking stupid ass. Fuck.

Posted by: USNtakim prfoundly deplorable! at July 01, 2018 03:14 AM (0OmEj)

612 Oh USNtakim, I am so sorry. {{{Hugs}}}

May your friends be there to support you. And you know we will in any way we can.

However you feel right now is legitimate. You didn't choose the timing of this.

If you feel differently tomorrow that's cool too.

The Horde is large, it contains multitudes.

There are no right or wrong emotions in this situation. Being furious is understandable too.
There may be unresolved feelings about your brother this will bring up, but you will get through it. And again, I am so very sorry.

621 words pretty much fail in times like these. at least mine seem to.

know that you yours have a Horde of friends to speak with, commiserate with or just to pray for you and your family in their hour of need.

624 USNtakim: When my cousin did this, I asked my priest what I should do. I was similarly numb.

He had one word: Pray.

When I asked him what to pray for, he simply said pray with all your heart.

Ask for what you need, it will be given.

8 years out, and it still feels like that, but daily offering helps an awful lot.

If you can't pray, I understand. I will do that for you.

{{hugs}}

USNtakim: Been there. Wife's brother, nearly the same age. Left behind a wife and young child. Drugs. They never realize that a drug that can make you feel *that* good is also one day is going to make you feel equally *that* bad on another day.

Serenity prayer comes to mind:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.

It's doubtful that there is anything you could have done if he was a drug user. Don't beat yourself up, or let others do the same to themselves.
