Our local paper used to be pretty good. Then they wanted to cover more national and international news. Of course the only way to do that is include the "big" papers articles. They then shrunk the size of the paper to where most older farts like me have a hard time reading it. So we canceled it.

I stll miss it though, like when it's time to lite my charcoal chimney

I used to get my local paper but they pretty much did the same thing except the local stories mostly disappeared. If I wanted national and world news I could have subscribed to one of our big city papers. Finally I just got rid of them, too.

45 Our local paper was nice when we first moved here 35 years ago. It actually covered local matters: town and county hearings, scheduled road work, fires, it even still had a 'social corner' for residents. I freelanced for it with stories about new businesses, restaurant reviews, nearby gatherings and attractions. I even had a column for a while. Money wasn't much but it was fun, especially the column and events dealing with local history. Just about every home subscribed. Sadly, it is long gone along with the strong sense of community.

MS primaries are over. Wicker (R) easily won his primary against some nobody and will likely retain his seat.

Ms. Cindy is a different story. She was appointed to take Thad Cockroach's seat (he waited until after the primary deadline to resign), and yes, she's a former Dem.

So, with this one little trick, she didn't have to face a primary challenger. So, come November it will be a top two battle for the seat as Cindy ain't likely to pull 50% + with several challengers in the field.

Her most notable opponent is Chris McDaniel, who almost took down the Cockroach two years ago in the primary. That's who I will be voting for, and doing a bit of campaigning for too.

That's "plotz" which actually has a couple of meanings depending upon context.

First, is to collapse from exhaustion or fall into a chair because you're really tired. The other, IIRC, is as a secondary way to tell someone to "drop dead." The literal phrase for that being "vayr ge-hargit."

But if you drink too much Blatz and get blitzed you'll plotz.

101 There's a great book about Garfield and his assassination, "Destiny of the Republic". Among other things, it leaves no doubt that the wound, while serious, was easily treatable even by the standards of the day, and that it is very accurate to say that Garfield was truly killed by the arrogance and incompetence of his white house surgeon.

There are some fascinating side stories - at the time, Alexander Graham Bell had just developed one of the first working prototypes of what would come to be known as the X-Ray machine. Garfield's doctors were obsessed with finding the bullet in his abdomen, and had introduced infection and caused great damage in their probing for it. (in fact it could have been left in place and he would have recovered nicely) However, they also thought Bell's new invention was too dangerous and newfangled, so they turned down his offer to let them use the one tool that could have put an end to all of their bungling.

It took two long and incredibly painful months for Garfield's doctors to finally kill him. A very sad story.

(just like many shooters today, Guitreau was almost certainly mentally ill)

My brother is a US Marshal and works very often with ICE. He tells me stories all the time of the absolute scum (my words) he has to apprehend. These ICE agents and US Marshals are bad mamba jambas (as in good). They're tough, disciplined, brave and they face extremely dangerous situations every single day by nature of what they do. I have deep respect.

LOL! Now of course this was a good thing to do, and we hope Trump and Salman are talking of BOPD (barrels per day, not cumulative) which only the Saudi's have the capacity to do.

But if you wonder just why the Saudi's would consider doing such a thing, just rephrase the request in financial terms - assume a price of $60/bbl, to keep the math easy (I think it's actually been approaching $80)

So what Trump was asking was "Prince Salman, for the good of all of us, could you see it in your heart to allow yourself to make an extra $120 Million PER DAY over and above what you are making already? Please?

And Prince Salman says, "Oh ok, if you ask nicely." SHOCKAH!!!"

I would rather the price go up, and let Texas oilfields kick back into production and bring it back down that way. But Trump doesn't want high oil prices leading into the mid terms.

Iran and Venezuela. Trump's ending of the deal with Iran is not only crimping their export ability because of the threat of new sanctions, it is also threatening their financial arrangements and now the unrest in the country is starting to impact production. Iran is in a lot bigger trouble than our MSM lets on, and it's showing up in oil prices.

But even bigger than that is Venezuela - 10 years ago Venezula was still pumping out 2.2 million BOPD, and even a year ago it was 1.6 million. Now Venezuelan production is crashing, and as oil workers on all levels have fled the country, it may have gone past a tipping point and be headed towards zero, as their entire system collapses completely. Last number I've seen is that the refineries they have are only working at 30% capacity, and that is because 70% of their capacity is broken down, waiting on parts. And because they have screwed over every supplier in the world, it's impossible for them to even buy parts to repair anything. They are collapsing almost as completely as Libya did after Qaddafi, turning into little more than another Mad Maxistan.
