The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“It’s a weird case, right. He allegedly stole a bridge. I’m fascinated by it.” Judge Philip Simon

Quote II

"God forbid, Ruth Bader Ginsburg dies, or [Anthony] Kennedy retires or [Stephen] Breyer has a stroke or is no longer able to serve. Then we're not talking about Scalia for Scalia, which is what Gorsuch is, we're talking about Scalia for somebody on the Court who shares our values. And then all of a sudden the things I fought for with scars on my back to show for it in this state are in jeopardy." Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)

Scars? More like hemorrhoids.

Quote III

Where is the politician who has not promised to fight to the death for lower taxes- and who has not proceeded to vote for the very spending projects that make tax cuts impossible? Barry Goldwater

The Saturday Sunday Night Joke

A nun walks into Mother Superior’s office and plunks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh heavy with frustration.

“What troubles you, Sister?” asked the Mother Superior. “I thought this was the day you spent with your family.”

“It was,” sighed the Sister. “I went to play golf with my brother. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to Christ.”

“I seem to recall that,” the Mother Superior agreed. “So I take it your day of recreation was not relaxing?”

“Far from it,” snorted the Sister, “in fact, I even took the Lord’s name in vain today!”

“Goodness, Sister!” gasped the Mother Superior, astonished. “You must tell me all about it!”

“Well, we were on the fifth tee…and this hole is a monster, Mother Superior – 540 yard Par 5, with a nasty dogleg left and a hidden green….and I hit the drive of my life. I creamed it. The sweetest swing I’ve ever made. It’s flying straight and true, right along the line I wanted…and it hits a bird in mid-flight !”

“Oh my!” commiserated the Mother. “How unfortunate! But surely that didn’t make you blaspheme, Sister!”

“No, that wasn’t it,” admitted Sister. “While I was still trying to fathom what had happened, this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs my ball and runs off down the fairway!”

“Oh, that would have made me blaspheme!” sympathized the Mother.

“But I didn’t, Mother!” sobbed the Sister. “And I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from God, this hawk swoops out of the sky and grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in his paws!”

“So that’s when you cursed,” said the Mother with a knowing smile.

“Nope, that wasn’t it either,” cried the Sister, anguished, “because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the cup!”

Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest, fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and said… “You missed the freakin’ putt, didn’t you?”

On the look out for a bitch. And her dog to.

A social media hunt has been launched to identify a woman who allowed her dog to poop in the middle of the airport and didn't clean it up.

The incident was caught on video by an onlooker at Denver International Airport.

The foul footage shows the owner talking on the phone near a gate - ignoring the sizable pile of poop by her feet.

It is about time that the concept of shame was brought back.

New York's Junior Senator, Chubby McChub-Chub. Is not the brightest bulb in the pack.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., declared Thursday on national TV that the newest member of the Supreme Court, Justice Neil Gorsuch, did not receive an affirmative vote from “one Democrat” in his confirmation process.

Which is, in effect, a true statement considering Gorsuch received THREE Democrat votes.

Have to love the Left's permanent amnesia. Justice Kennedy's retirement for a Trump selection bad. Ginsburg retiring so Obama can replace her good.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one of the more important liberal litigators and jurists of her generation. She has been trailblazer on the issue of women's legal rights and a powerful voice for progressive causes as a justice on the highest US court in the land.

And she must retire. Right now. While we're at it, Stephen Breyer should retire too.

This call has nothing to do with either justice's job performance. Ginsburg's commanding dissent in last year's 5-4 decision to overturn a key provision of the Voting Rights Act is compelling evidence that she remains a vital member of the court.
But no longer is the decision of when to retire about them; rather it's about what comes after they leave the court. If Ginsburg and Breyer wait to retire, it will only serve to maximize the possibility that a Republican president will choose their successor and in the process undo much of what they've worked for their entire careers.

Thankfully Ginsburg ego is pretty damn yuuge.

171 If we start to tax remissions by illegal criminal invading wetback undocumented aliens, that will be the push that shoves Mexico into the shit for realz. Meanwhile, if the Saudis raise production and we continue to produce more of our own oil, demand and revenues for the other major source of income they have will also be hit hard. AND, to drive another nail into the lead coffin, whatever tourism business they may still have will go bye bye too. Venezuela will soon have company in the Socialist Hellhole category. Could not happen to a better bunch. And then we build the wall. The tourists can go to North Korea, the new Switzerland of Asia.

Maybe. Posted by: nerdygirl at July 01, 2018 10:11 PM (+lVUW)

We tend to forget just how effective a simple fan can be. Had a real hot day here last week, and I was in barn cleanup mode. There was the remains of an old service station battery charger in the barn, and I dragged back to the garage to dismember it, having a good one to use, now. I was sweating like a pig, had to stop every couple of minutes to wipe my brow. So I took the fan out of the battery charger, wired a cord to it, and clamped it to the rim of roller tool box, and turned it on. Instant comfort! That thing blows a huge breeze. Wouldn't want to get a finger in it, though.

How old was the battery charger? Well, it had a selenium rectifier in it, and those are 40 years or more obsolete.

223 I'm not as concerned with Obrador's election in Mexico as some are. First, the biggest problem facing any Mexican President is that large areas of the country are now essentially ungovernable, and completely out of control - the northern states run by the narco gangs is one obvious area, the Mayan areas near Central America are another. Left or right, the Government can do nothing in these areas until it re-asserts its control over these regions, and that will not be easy. The outgoing President failed miserably at this task.

Also, Obrador will need to raise money in order to finance any new leftist schemes - but Mexico isn't a place where there are all that many "rich". The only obvious place to raise a lot of money is to go after the Narco gangs, who control untold billions and who now make up a significant part of the Mexican economy. But again, this won't be an easy thing to do, these are some of the most scary violent people in the world. They aren't going away quietly.

Most likely Obrador will fail and become unpopular pretty quickly, just like all Mexican Presidents fail and become unpopular, and for the same reasons.

257 CFO mom, that's cool. Lone Justice is one of those bands that got some boosts in the 1980s, but never really took off. I think their lead singer Maria McKee did far better as a solo artist than the band ever did.

I first heard of Lone Justice on MTV, when I learned they were U2's opening act during their 1985 tour supporting The Unforgettable Fire. I was such a huge U2 fan at the time, I looked for and bought Lone Justice's album without even hearing a single track on it.

At the time I liked but didn't love it... but it's one of those albums that's grown on me.

283 Always thought Debbie Harry was the hawt. And some of her/their songs were good and have aged well.

Both quotes related to SCOTUS perfectly reflect the reason it is not, should never have been, and can never have supremacy or be considered "co-equal" - if we are to have a representative republic.

Sen. MacCaskill - what you "worked hard" for is not the judiciary legislating; if your "work" had legitimately succeeded, then the courts would not have to deliver for you. There would be these things called "laws", enacted and signed by accountable politicians, as was the design. The fact that justices delivered your goods reflects their lawlessness, the court's perverted status as legislative not judicial bodies.

Same applies to the other quote. The constitution created two accountable, elected branches to make policy decisions. Decisions on important matters not directly addressed in the constitution are for them, and/or for the constitutional amendment process, to decide. Not unelected and (obviously) incompetent judges.

311 Yeah the Mexizuela situation may end up being the least surprising crisis in a long time.

If to gets as bad as it might, Trump is going to have go far beyond tweets about bad immigration laws and do a national address and a special appeal to Congress to take emergency measures.

I'd say about 80% of the country (no exaggeration) would support him, and should allow him to push the Hill.

On-topic, but also real, this may lead to a situation where Trump and his team may regret not repudiating a lawless judiciary earlier (admissions EO nonsense). There's little doubt a dozen district courts or circuits wouldn't hesitate to try and hand-cuff Trump in a true border crisis - THAT's how far gone the country is, institutionally. He's literally have no choice but to repudiate, he'd obviously be in the right (by the law), and 80% of the country would back him.

Lots of long-shot things have to go right, but could end up being a turning point.

318 I think the lack of leadership in Congress and recent Presidents, PDT excepted, has led to the courts setting the rules.

I took a friend of mine on a train trip once. We got pretty blasted and the cafe attendant cut us off. I said "Okey Dokey" but my friend did not want to hear it and despite my pleadings that it was not a good idea, she insisted upon going to question the conductor about the decision. Now the conductor really doesn't give a shit, but he's gonna back his crew, as he should. My friend would not/could not shut up. Our station came before any real trouble could arise thank goodness.

340 we should have kept Mexico after we kicked their ass in the war back in the 1840's...

O I imagine we can work up some pretty wholesome name-calling over that.

For one thing that would have been slave-holder territory, by latitude and tradition. So the Knights would have had 2/3 of their Golden Circle, and the push would have been on to square that. Parts of it might have worked out just fine, but the end of slavery sure would have worked out differently. The stock of those involved in slavery would have broadened, and there well might have been separate classes of slavery.

397 I'm thinking we'll get Mariel Boatlift part II: Mexican Boogaloo. The socialist will try to export his criminals and gang members as a way of getting a hold on the northern states. The narcos run the country anyway; if he promises them a completely free hand at the border in return for giving him space elsewhere they can essentially split the country. It's like ceding Normandy to the Vikings.

This is why the Donald should ignore the judges, get the Corps of Engineers down at the border, and have them round up every construction company that can load up a truck and drive down. Work around the clock on an emergency basis with bounties for miles of fence erected. This could be a crisis so don't let it go to waste. By the time the lawsuits get cranked up they could have a significant amount of fence constructed.

405 Well, having been down that path, I'll say one thing about suicide and leave it be.

It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem in many cases.

If anyone knew how to stop it, we would. It takes a real reckoning to change how you view the world and your place in it. For some, thankfully the light bulb clicks on. For others, they are too efficient at their task.

I'm a firm believer that such quantum shifts can only come from the intervention of the divine. Two things changed my life from the self-absorbed hell hole it was: God and my daughter.

What I've come to realize is that it took the knowledge that I had to serve others, my Lord and my child, to stop fixating on my lot in life.

If I could offer any advice to anyone suffering from depression or with a loved one that suffers from it, it would be this, don't concentrate on making them feel loved, concentrate on making them feel counted on and depended on and needed.

Then life has purpose. Half of your feelings of worthlessness come from the constant internal belief that you are a burden to those around you.

420 Mexico's problems are best dealt with by them being on one side of a 40 ft. wall, and us safely behind it, on the other.

Their "caste" system makes India's look downright chummy in comparison... note that you'll never see a 5'2" Indio guy with dark skin, no apparent neck, barrel chest and VERY Aztec or Mayan features, being the Anchor on their news broadcasts.

Same with the women of those tribes...you're never going to see them doing the weather on Mexican TV. Ever.

And that stratification goes all the way down to jobs such as pumping gas vs. managing the gas station.

We DO. NOT. WANT. to "adopt" those problems as our own.

Hell, we still have issues such as Average White Male Trolls infesting this site with puking drivel, long past the point of Ace's or MisHum's legendary patience with such.

Know what'd make a fairly secure wall? A thirty foot high tangle of Concertina Wire.

Cheap, fast and very, very effective.

Mexico goes full commie, that wire ought to be deployed along every foot of Southern Border, within a one month time frame.

OK, this is a shallow dive, but I went and read some Krautish things.

I think the interior minister, Seehoeffer, hates Merkel's immigration policies so much that he committed career suicide. On purpose.

The "conservatives" rely on a coalition of CDU and CSU, which are exactly the same except that the CSU is from Texas. They call Texas Bavaria in German. And they pretty much rely on the CDU and the CSU being the same party until Texas says no.

Which I think is what just happened.

So maybe the coalition is coming apart. Maybe the CDU is looking for someone else to form a coalition with, which would end aeons of CDU/CSU solidarity.

Correct in the mid to long term, but inadequate in the Right Now term.

The Concertina Barriers are the Right Now solution that's needed to interdict the flow in the fastest possible manner.

Those other wall systems? They can be designed to be just right for their given areas, built under standard Fed contract RFP processes, etc. All of which takes time. Too much time.

Razor Wire NOW. Shoot on Sight zones...now, and always.

Tailor made border walls? Let the Concertina buy the time, and then make them so.

Don't need the SeaBees ("we build, we fight") or Army Corps, but we could use them - as managers of an emergency project.

Surge Nat. Guard forces to select areas - in their usual role as eyes, ears, logistics support, and comms for the BP (might even send civil affairs units for this scenario, as sections of the border might need to be "militarized").

Only question: would the judiciary, the Dems, the GOPe, and the "press" *really* launch that last banzai charge that demagogically opposing such emergency measures would represent?

438 Things would have to get pretty bad to justify a shoot on sight policy. That is almost certainly not going to happen, nor should it. We just need to have walls, whether concertina wire or high steel, to keep them on the other side, and to keep those we expel from just coming right back as they often do. The way things are now, it's like trying to bail out a leaky rowboat with a sieve.

Would only apply in certain places, but one nifty system I came to appreciate in certain govt. sponsored enrichment trips are Hesco barriers.

Giant square-shaped rings of heavy-duty chicken wire of a sort, inside that industrial-grade cardboard walls (also square), inside THAT - sand, dirt, whatever the ground nearby is, dumped in by backhoes. Stackable, up to 2-3 layers, at least.

Very quick, very cheap, very effective. A double-thick line of these was normally considered adequate against V-BIEDs (truck bombs). Would be more than adequate for the use in question. Miles of those in key spots could be erected in days.

We could easily launch a massive public communications campaign that by itself would have a huge impact. Make it clear that unauthorized crossings (and asylum requests) will *not* happen at the border, period. This would make much of the fortification moot - but that would still have to happen anyway.

As with a permanent security system, *part* of the value of it all is the visible concrete expression of political will to enforce sovereignty and the law. That by itself will both solve much of the ongoing problem, and shrink it in the future.

There is literally almost no constituency for the extreme irresponsible migration/immigration idiocies one hears promoted. Over 80% of people oppose "sanctuary" policies. A true border crisis/rush would be as one-sided as any political issue could be.

Again, the CDU/CSU thing is as if there were a GOP and a Texas GOP and everyone assumes they'll all get along and go along.

There was a really bad thing recently where a 14 year old girl got rape murdered, Susanne F., and apparently the Merkel faction is downplaying it and the Texas faction is saying fuck no.

This might be the biggest political earthquake since unification.

I still doubt Germans retain the sense and responsibility to right their ship - not any sort of harsh treatment, as I remain pessimistic about the US, too.

But it's about more than Germany of course. The third German attempt to ruin Europe in a century needs to be crushed ASAP. Berlin's Euro-weenie running dogs are nothing without the German back-up. And as Austria and Italy and the UK and most of eastern Europe show, even with Berlin pushing hard for disaster, there are many politely declining the invitation.

That's the sort of rich diversity which makes this country great. It's hard to believe that Trump would try to deprive the nation of his contributions. Another reason to abolish ICE, who would have packed him up and sent him back to his home country.

559 Reading the news accounts one can see the leftist media outlets report mostly on the fire with only a brief mention of Joergensen's arrest.

In the New York Times account, the Times tells us that "the authorities clarified that the person they had in custody had not intentionally started the fire."

Only the extreme right-wing propagandists report on the person and his apparent political beliefs.

We would have programs at the place I worked at, that corporate would come up with some goofy thing every 3 years or so. After 2 years of trying to implement it, they would realize, like we did the first month, that it was a waste of time. Sure enough, a year later, another stupid program that would be similar to one we had done 6 years before that didn't work either.
Then they would always wonder how to save more money.

Those corporate mandated improvement plans generately come with a corporate staff change/promotion. Their new pet project will fix everything once everyone is on board. The thing I love most is the reporting/auditing for the old systems never gets eliminated. We're left completing dead procedures for former bosses that will fill in check boxes for middle management that just go to the files, while also getting new reporting requirements that will also end up in dead files after the next suit is promoted.
