And my assessment: It's NOT a heavily left-leaning newspaper. In fact, it's almost deliberately middle-of-the-road and noncontroversial. If anything, I might lean a little to the left, but nothing to the degree of my of the major dailies in the US these days.
They have a few lefty editorials, but not a lot of them.
Most of their coverage is about local crimes and "fireman rescue cat in a tree" type stories, and city council arguments about garbage collection and other local-news trivia.
So it hardly seems like the kind of paper anyone would target for political reasons.
Thus, my guess is that it was a personal grievance, unrelated to politics: Either a disgruntled ex-employee, or a romantic relationship gone bad, etc.
I could be wrong, but it just seems so unlikely to target this small-time middling nonpoliticized paper for political reasons.

On Fox, some reporter said they looked too and also said mostly local news, not too politically bent, although they supported Democrat moderate candidates etc in the editorials.

One can expect to find any number of armed citizens when one goes out in public, and that is a major deterrent for most reasonably sane folks to keep it in check.

It takes hours and hours to process the suspect and a certain kind of (booking?) bond must be taken out before the authorities can legally release his name and the press can legally report without getting sued and effing up the prosecution.
If the suspect is dead, then there is no need.
When the name is immediately released or leaked (aka Nick Cruz) something is fishy and is a huge red flag.

I have told my family the sound of reloading is a time of opportunity. I have reloaded various weapons and dropped mags so they know what it sounds like. This is critical to fight or flight. Doing nothing is not an option.
Now I don't necessarily blame people for freezing. It depends on the circumstances. When I was trying to survive September 11th, I encountered people in various states of shock, some literally unable to speak or move. That's just war, and people who aren't prepared for it, in the midst of it.
However for my family that's a NOGO.

Gunfire indoors ain't like the movies. There's no talking between
gunshots. And the idea of being remotely close to multiple shotgun
blasts indoors and being able to hear anything is beyond absurd. The
sound of one shot is absolutely staggering. Much less multiple.
I've mentioned this before. And the shooter is as deafened as anyone, or he's wearing hearing protection. He won't be hearing people coming to get him.
The calculus in a situation like that isn't the way it looks in the movies.

On my desk I have a copy of the active shooter training sheet. Everything is common sense. The police pretty much are encouraging pastors to have licensed, trained CC members at various places in the church.

U.S. charges hundreds in major healthcare fraud, opioid crackdown
(Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday announced charges against 601 people including doctors for taking part in healthcare frauds that resulted in over $2 billion in losses and contributed to the nation's opioid epidemic in some cases.
The arrests came as part of what the department said was the largest healthcare fraud takedown in U.S. history and included 162 doctors and other suspects charged for their roles in prescribing and distributing addictive opioid painkillers.
"Some of our most trusted medical professionals look at their patients - vulnerable people suffering from addiction - and they see dollar signs," U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said.

In srsness, I think we all really would. Right now, the investigation appears to have gone dark, leading us to conclude that one of two things have happened:
1) the investigation has been a total bust, and they have learned nothing about the man or the motive because they are completely incompetent investigators, but they're embarrass to admit that publicly, OR
2) the investigation WAS successful and they did find out a lot, but for some reason they do not want the public to know a word about what it is that they found.
So we can take our pick - I can't really think of a 3rd option at this point.

It's just as horrible to do it to people you know.
A friend of my husband's invited a cousin to their holiday dinner because they didn't want him to spend the holiday alone. He thanked them by murdering half his family including his little girl.
Apparently he was mentally ill, but he was not delusional. He just hated their happiness.

that if something like this had happened at my workplace, some of you
would have thought I deserved it because all journalists are evil
traitorus scum? I suppose that if, God forbid, something like this ever
happens at my current workplace I'll just be getting what I deserve
because I'm an evil gubmint worker... yes I realize you all are just
venting but maybe you should think twice about tarring "all"
