Let's have state and federal government withhold union dues and directly fund the unions that supposedly negotiate with them.
I doubt the union would do anything for them. That's not what they say their job is. Example, a woman talks about the unions non-help for her in her Nursing job: SEIU did nothing for me. I worked at the state hospital as an LPN (I'm now an RN) and had an RN coworker who did not think LPNs should work in the capacity we did. To shorten a very long story, she gave my personal info to a sex offender patient. For my birthday I got a card with a penis on the front and a heart symbolizing my vagina. The inside was signed by that nurse, my manager, my assistant manager, and several patients. I asked to transfer units. I was told no. I went to my union rep and union headquarters. I was told I would have to hire an attorney because there was nothing the union could do because I was not facing disciplinary action. They could only help if I was. So, I got a penis card from a sex offender signed by my boss for my birthday and the union couldn't even help me transfer to another unit. But they sure collected my dues. "...difficult to implement." Yeah and also probably illegal. Their argument that the union dues come from government worker's pay checks and therefore ultimately comes from the government is wrong. The money is paid to the workers for service rendered. Except for taxes the government has no say as to where he spends it. Anymore than a restaurant customer can demand where a chef or waiter spends the money they paid for service rendered.

Public sector unions are an obvious abomination, but it's probably impossible to get rid of them. Might be the country's biggest problem - more consequential than all the rest. Not just fiscally. Not just the outrageous corruption of the self-dealing. But the public service ethic. Unionization probably a greater factor in the decline of that than any cultural issue.

Someone in the comments of some other thread talked about staying in the teacher's union because it offered protection in case they were sued by a student. Now that sounds like it could be worth something. I don't know what it costs to buy that kind of insurance on your own, but getting it as part of union membership has to be of value. Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at June 28, 2018 07:12 PM (pvjTE) I didn't join a union (AZ right to work) but as a Special Ed. teacher carried liability insurance. it was very reasonable. 75 i'm conflicted, I believe for the good ov union members it is great to disconnect the political activism to politicians not of their choice.
One thing that I believe IS an actual issue is the protection of public sector union members such as cops. being in a situation with a mayor such as in Baltimore , where the mayor is corrupt and siccing people on members, and the now lack of atty assistance if cops should find themselves in conflict Because OF political scams such as Lynch/ re NYPD and Freddie Grey as blackmail. police make a pretty nice salary but not good enough to withstand that onslaught. so .. whats the solution to this type of activity and lack of protection? ============= Look, the ruling did not abolish unions. It only stopped you from being forced to be in one. It now comes down to cost/benefit. If you are so worried about the above, join the union. If you're not, don't. This isn't Rocket Science. ++++ Eugene Volokh put up the same idea yesterday. https://reason.com/volokh/2018/06/ 27/the-limited-effects-of-the-supreme-court But, he fails to address the first problem in deciding to reduce the wages of the union workers. That is, UNION workers work under a contract. Their wages are already set in place. Nobody, not even the Legislature, can just reduce their wages in violation of their contract. Of course, the government can try to negotiate lower wages in the next contract, but doesn't the government already try to do that? In theory, anyway. Posted by: Anon Y. Look, the ruling did not abolish unions. It only stopped you from being forced to be in one. It now comes down to cost/benefit. If you are so worried about the above, join the union. If you're not, don't. This isn't Rocket Science.
Posted by: I'm the Honey Badger, BITCH! at June 28, 2018 07:42 PM (iJhFW) ----- It was more than that. It stops Unions from being able to forcibly collect dues from non union employees, a law that had been in place for years because these employees " benefited" from Union negotiated work terms. And those examples are just the illegal embezzlements. In Wisconsin before they changed the law some districts were buying the teachers health insurance from a union owned or at least union crony company. Not embezzlement but when the law changed the districts found better deals for health insurance. And then there are the fancy union clubs and so on for the upper levels of the unions. They give themselves a lot of $$ perks on the backs of the rank and file members as well as the PAC contributions. Its not like teachers now cannot donate to the NEA pac or directly to pols they like. Its just that the unions don't have the mandatory dues to throw at the Dem candidates.

I went to my union rep and union headquarters. I was told I would have to hire an attorney because there was nothing the union could do because I was not facing disciplinary action. They could only help if I was.
My parents taught. My father, vice-presidentially, would NOT be in a room alone with a female student (or a group of them.) Even if the union would have defended him from false harassment charges (unlikely), the accusation alone would have ended his career. And they would not have helped with any family-bankrupting civil charges. The school did have female non-teaching employees to "help out" in class... that is, hang around so head-case female students couldn't just he-said/she-said a 'Mr. Jones touched my butt' if they didn't like their grades. I was reading. The SJWs and abort crowd is going to go all out on the Kennedy seat. This is going to be worse than Bork, Clarence Thomas and all the others combined. Now, the idiot Dems gave up the filibuster by filibustering Gorsuch, which didn't affect the balance of the Court. But their lunatic base demanded it. So, now they can't filibuster, but their lunatic base is gonna demand they go balls to the wall, somehow. Now, remember when the Wisconsin Dems fled the state to deny a quorum in the legislature? Well, since McStain is not going to show up, we've only got 50 Reps. If all 49 Senate Dems were to go hide, then there would be majority for Constitutional quorum for the Senate to do business. The question is does VP Mike Pence count for quorum purposes. You may think that's nuts, they wouldn't dare do that. But you ain't seen nothing yet. Kennedy is the hill they're going to die on. In the PRoC teachers work 180 days a year, sometimes less. A normal private sector might get 3 weeks vaco and two weeks holidays which works out to 47 weeks at 5 days a week or 235 days a year. 235/180 = 1.31 multiplier. So a private worker would have to earn $157,000 per year. How many private sector workers get that? A small percentage and I bet those are working 60-80 hour weeks. Yeah and that's basically true (to the extent the union did anything) but the problems started with the unions then taking that money and dumping it into the pockets of leftist politicians and activists. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at June 28, 2018 07:55 PM (VM6ev) Pretty much. Remember the Vietnam War Brain Trust? That went over really well. You could go anywhere in the country and get someone who spent a few decades doing actual physical labor but got hurt and had to quit working and give them the title Harvard Labor Expert and the results would improve 100% Their day would consist of sitting in classrooms and dissertation committee meetings literally saying, "You've never done this type of work before, have you?" after listening to two minutes of some budding "labor expert" with baby soft hands droning on about their research paper. Pretty certain that scheme "to just take union employee's money" would be considered a Bill of Attainder since it targets specific individuals rather than being a general tax. Of course, obeying U.S. Constitution is the least of the Lefties's concerns.
I don't think this Benjamin Sachs character has thought-through the ramifications of this one: 1) Donk politicians help themselves to employee's money 2) Piss off lots of formerly reliable Donk voters 3) ? Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at June 28, 2018 08:03 PM (5Yee7) 266

The problem with unions today is that he pendulum swung from way over here
...where workers were just trash you replaced when they died from horrible working conditions while paying them pennies, which you then deduced 'expenses' from until they were in debt. to here ...where unions crush companies by their tactics and increase the cost of living on everyone with exorbitant pay, benefits, and retirement packages all the while taking dues to funnel into leftist causes We need the pendulum to stop wildly swaying and stabilize things. Unions and businesses, not so nuts either way. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at June 28, 2018 08:06 PM (39g3+) 276

BTW, I would be all for a state, post this ruling, to decide to tax their citizens on behalf of unions, on behalf of one political party.
Please do this. Please also don't just tax the members of your state who belong to unions, either. Please tax everyone--I mean, they're Public Sector Unions, right? The whole Public benefits! At the same time, please be sure to include raising taxes enough to covering the currently unfunded pensions for public sector union employees. One tidy package. We promise to resolutely uphold the principle of states rights in this matter. Pinky promise. Hell, we'll come applaud the signing of the bill. Thanks in advance. The weird thing is that today's tech billionaires, who are pretty much all lefties, work their employees to the bone almost in the fashion of the evil capitalist factory and coal mine owners of the 1890s.
And the ones who are globalists don't seem to have a problem with outsourcing our manufacturing to China and other countries with no real labor laws. Posted by: tu3031 at June 28, 2018 08:02 PM (O5Q3r) Had a sales guy working for our company a few years back who owned a Porsche, but whenever he did customer visits in the LA area where he lived, he'd either drive a rental or his wife's sensible mid-sized Toyota. The LAST thing he wanted to convey to customers is that he was making boatloads of cash off of them. More than one salesperson in our industry made that mistake, driving expensive cars to customer locations. Knew one of them who was enormously proud of his Dodge Viper (sweet ride, by the way). Nice guy, actually didn't need the sales job, he was loaded. And he lost a couple of customers when he cluelessly showed the Viper off. It makes you wonder - if the unions just took the money from the members and invested it into a stock market index fund, couldn't they then use the earning of that fund to provide numerous, and ever increasing benefits to the workers? Like...I dunno...free health care for life? Paid vacations?
College tuition for the kids? Added pension benefits? And wouldn't all those goodies then attract more people to join unions over time? And make unions more popular? And potentially reduce the cost of hiring union members to a employer, who might not have to provide those benefit gratis? Instead they steal the money, or give it away to politicians, who blow it getting elected. No wonder it is a failed model. Posted by: Dean Wormer at June 28, 2018 08:57 PM (fftfA) 310

We do union crime in Detroit far better than any of the pikers named in this post. The Chrysler UAW leadership and Chrysler management got together and looted $ 4.5 million from their 'National Training Center' over the last five years. The rank and file got screwed on their work shift hours in the last Chrysler contract as a direct result of this cupidity.
This thievery was facilitated through bogus personal 'charities' whose only charitable objects were the individual UAW fat cats in control. These personal 'charities' are very popular among union fat cats for the graft they deliver, surreptitiously. This chicanery is also occurring at the Ford and GM UAW Departments. The UAW is so badly compromised that they will be unable to deliver the votes, in Michigan, in 2018. The rank and file is stone cold furious. Posted by: 10x25mm at June 28, 2018 11:37 PM (Kz+di) 313
