The Morning Rant: Middle School Edition

macaca portrait.jpg

[Punk Monkey is having his studs polished and his anal glands expressed, and will be back after Independence Day]

Baseball umpires, more than any other official in any other sport, think that they are an integral part of the game and have every right to insert themselves into every situation and make themselves the focus of the players, the fans and the TV broadcast.

And they are wrong. Just shut up and call balls and strikes. Nobody watches baseball to see the umps, and when they insert themselves into the game it is diminished. The cult of personality and the aura of ultimate power that they surround themselves with is a detriment to the game. So what if some .220 hitter is jawing about a bad call. Suck it up and take it. You called him out on a low and away pitch. You are the one who screwed up. So be a man and take 10 seconds of anger from an upset customer, just like most people have to tolerate at their jobs. This crap about instant ejections if a player has the temerity to say more than a few hushed words to an ump is ridiculous. Climb down from those high horses you pompous asses

And another thing. Aaron Judge is 6'7" tall. His strike zone is higher than most. Maybe you can compensate for it and actually call the strike zone for the player at the plate instead of the preprogrammed one you have in your pea-brain.

Hillary Clinton goes on a fact-finding visit to Israel. While she is on a tour of Jerusalem she suffers a heart attack and dies. The undertaker tells the Americans accompanying her, "You can have her shipped home for $50,000, or you can bury her here, in the Holy Land for just $100".

The Americans go into a corner to discuss for a few minutes. They return with their answer to the undertaker and tell him they want Hillary shipped home.

The undertaker is puzzled and asks, 'Why would you spend $50,000 to ship her home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $100?The American diplomats reply, 'Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. We just can't take the risk.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - An Indianapolis church is shining light on the immigration issues happening in our country.

Christ Church Cathedral started the "Every Family is Holy Campaign" to bring awareness to what what they call "humanitarian atrocities" resulting from Donald Trump's zero tolerance policy on immigration.

The church has erected statues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph inside a cage in its lawn facing Monument Circle.

42 From the last thread:

360 > Pretty good from a historical position.

Maybe if you mean "totally bogus from a historical position".

> Basically, says after the Arabs conquered Jerusalem

The Arabs didn't conquer Jerusalem until 638, six years after Muhammad had died.

> Mohammad is thought to be Abd-Al-Malik, the caliph who ruled the Arabs at the time.

1) Caliph is an Islamic title for a successor of Muhammad.

2) No one "ruled the Arabs" before Muhammad. They were a collection of squabbling tribes (which they still are, to some degree).

All this stuff is well-documented, not only in Islamic history, but in the histories of the Byzantines (Orthodox Christians) and Romans (Catholic Christians).

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia, Pope Alexander VI at July 03, 2018 10:51 AM"

There's also good reason to believe (and this the worst kind of death penalty heresy to tell to a moslem) that the Koran was a mid 8th century creation by writers at the court of one of the early Caliph's, who was seeking to legitimize his rule. This theory holds that they gathered together bits and pieces of Jewish, Christian, and Gnostic writings, along with those of some home grown mystics, and created the idea of a "Mohammed" who was the mythical author of a unified view.

This idea is backed up by the unusual fact that the oldest complete Koran every found only dates from the mid-8th century, 100 years after Mohammed's supposed death, and only bits and pieces of various parts of it have ever been found which are older than that.

For as much attention and devotion that has been paid to Mohammed, there is a real chance that he is an entirely mythical character, insofar as he is portrayed. (Although I could see him being an alter-ego for Abd Al-Malik)

96 As an umpire alumni in both baseball and softball at multiple levels, I was taught long ago that your main objective (besides making the correct call) is to be invisible.

However, you also have to manage the game and maintain control and flow and that sometimes requires you to tamper down managers, coaches, or players who cross the line. Vehemently questioning balls and strikes, using threatening gestures or straight threats, or intent to injure will all get your tossed.

The Justice Department raided Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's office and took all his files. The pretext is an investigation of his business activities, unrelated to Trump. He had shredded a lot of documents, and the Justice Department painstakingly glued those back together. They are confidential. They are either evidence in a criminal investigation or confidential lawyer/client work product.

Someone has now leaked the documents stolen from Cohen's office. Of course.

107 So ridiculously avoidable. It always boggles my mind when stories like this come out. So much so, that I wonder if people add in the "I was cleaning it when it went off" as an out for their mistake.
No sane person cleans a gun with a round loaded.
Prayers, of course. Just can't understand this from a gun owner standpoint.
Posted by: AlaBAMA at July 03, 2018 11:16 AM (pUDQf)

These stories are always the same and impossible at the same time. The gun didn't "go off". A round was loaded in the chamber, the safety was off and the trigger was pulled or hammer slammed down. How and why is the actual story.

No one should ever do anything with a gun unless they have removed whatever magazine if it has one, then open the action and remove any cartridge, etc in the chamber, action locked open and inspected(by looking down the action into the muzzle, not pointing the muzzle at one's face and looking in the barrel) before ANYTHING is done to the gun. And the above operation must be done either outdoors pointing in a safe direction or in a large room with muzzle pointing away from anything you don't want to shoot, and with no humans or animals anywhere within 180 degrees of the muzzle direction.
I"m with Alabama. I feel deeply sorry for the person who did this, as they will live with this forever, but I can't overstate how avoidable this is.

I think umpires are far from the biggest problem MLB has these days. Manfred is a worse commissioner than Bud the Chud Selig ever was, and that's saying a lot.

He's all about shiny new marketing techniques that do not respect the game, are geared toward our low information, short-attention span nitwit generations, and he's killing the game.

That, and creating a game that is dominated by power (don't try to tell me the balls and the players are not juiced), has rendered it to a boring boring monotony of strikeouts, walks, and home runs.

No amount of marinading or rubbing or sacrificing virgins to Baphomet will make up for improper cooking.

Use a probe thermometer. Pull it at 155-160 or so.

If it isn't a bad piece of meat to begin with, it will be juicy and delicious.

On the other hand, you could marinate the thing in the tears of Archangels, but cook it to 170 or higher and it will taste like a pressure treated 2" x 6" coated in a delicious glaze.

186 In many ways, the story of Selfie Monkey is the story of modern Democrat politics.

A wildlife photographer's camera is ransacked by an ape who accidentally takes a selfie. the decision is made to use the innocent ape as a political prop. The photographer colludes with wildlife activists in hopes of creating animal legal rights. They sue, pretending to be adversaries, like Brennan, McCain and Fakenews repporters colluding to frame Donald Trump. When it looks like a court is about to throw out their ridiculos attempt to use the legal system to obtain a politcal result, they settle amongst themselves, giving the ape royalties (to be administered by the wildlife group, naturally!}. Thus, after failing legally, they settle for impotent moral grandstanding.

As i said, the story of modern Democrat politics.

Mark Steyn wrote somewhere (I think in Broadway Babies Say Goodnight) about musical theatre composers who only have one show in them, Jonathan Larson and Rent being his example.

Sherman Edwards is the same, 1776 being his only show. I'd even plump for Meredith Willson being in the same category; though he wrote The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Here's Love and 1491, The Music Man was, arguably, his only show, as he poured all of himself and all of his memories into it.

237 in baseball the reviews will reveal if umps are being biased. imo football is harder to analyze, when one team maybe gets more holding calls, or whatever.

Some of those playoff games it sure seemed the refs/umps had certain preferences on the outcome, and with millions of ad revenue on the line, they might try to quietly determine the outcome. (one Patriots game iirc, seemed overly unfair)

Our shadow government is the same ... selective prosecution, but a preference to stay in the shadows. But now they are exposed, yet Mueller is calling all the shots ... Hillary is excused for obvious crimes, then they accuse Trump on no evidence, and unjustly penalize everyone from his team with lawyer fees at the least, threats to family and prison at the worst.

Jane, this morning on Fox it was reported that the mayor of Annapolis called Trump personally to ask that the flags lowering order be given. Apparently, this has become routine now when there has been a mass shooting. I always thought it was respect for someone in the military, law enforcement or a prominent person in government who has died, but now it's become coopted by the left as a signal(IMO) of the evilness of the country in allowing guns.

How many people have died in hurricanes, or building fires, etc, and we don't lower flags for them. As usual, the left is succeeding in watering down our most respected traditions.

258 Love the Hilary story!

As to the umps - my perception is that since the replay era began, they have been a bit more muted. perhaps since they can be overruled on a call in front of 40,000 people who are right there.

What bugs me is mostly akin to the Judge issue. I don't like the idea of the variable strike zone, where one day, "They're getting the benefit of the doubt on those low outside pitches today", and the next, "So and so seems to be getting squeezed today."

It can seem to vary from ump to ump, day to day and even from pitcher to pitcher. I get that it's an inexact science and understand how it happens that someone with excellent control will end up getting the benefit of the doubt, but sometimes it seems like it is more the ump exerting his will on the game.

The neatest representation I heard came from a circa 1950 baseball instructional book. It said to imagine a plate glass, five sided pyramid above the plate extending from the knee to the shoulder (I know the zone has changed). All a pitcher has to do is break the glass by hitting that thin plate glass pyramid, even nick it, anywhere, and it is a strike. Period.

Two reasons.

1) The left always needs something to agitate against in order to keep moving the ball forward on the Marxism project.

Today it's gay pretend marriage, tomorrow it's transgenderism, the day after that it's something else, poligamy or pedophila perhaps.

2) The use the issue they have selected to slipstream other crap behind it. Agitating against "police brutality" becomes hey why don't we just legalize drugs and reform have sentencing reform and while we are at it why don't we just return the vote to felons, and on and on.

Great, I assume that means they are willing to foot the bill for the billions of dollars in service and benefits these "holy immigrant families" will need each year? And they should also agree to be held personally liable to the U.S. crime victims for all damages they suffer at the hands of these "holy families," because that seems only fair.

Once they've ponied up a trillion dollar deposit, to show their good faith, we can talk. Until then, we don't need to hear any more from them.

Moreover these two Powers, inducing other countries to follow suit, increased military preparations on all sides of Our Empire to challenge Us. They have obstructed by every means Our peaceful commerce and finally resorted to a direct severance of economic relations, menacing gravely the existence of Our Empire. Patiently have We waited and long have We endured, in the hope that Our government might retrieve the situation in peace. But Our adversaries, showing not the least spirit of conciliation, have unduly delayed a settlement; and in the meantime they have intensified the economic and political pressure to compel thereby Our Empire to submission. This trend of affairs, would, if left unchecked, not only nullify Our Empire's efforts of many years for the sake of the stabilization of East Asia, but also endanger the very existence of Our nation. Reason does not apply here. Forget that logic stuff.

Collins knows any judge that anyone would consider a conservative would likely vote to overturn Roe v Wade presuming such a case would even get there.

She is in the catbird seat now as the Republicans need every vote.

So what she wants is a judge to be sufficiently opaque about Roe v Wade so that she can cover her vote that she will get in exchange for whatever pork she lands for Maine.

552 @524 - I blame 20-something laziness.

I'd learned most etiquette as a kid from my folks and other sources.

As I realized that it was, in fact, becoming somewhat uncommon, I reveled in it.

Sometimes it backfired and wound wind up actually making girls uncomfortable. "Sit down, what are you doing?" "Getting your chair." "Why?" "It's what I do."

I'm making sure it is passed onto my children. Young Master Reason knows to hold the door for his sister and mom, which is hilarious sometimes because he will do it even while in the middle of an argument with his sister. My dad made it second-nature to me, and I've made it second-nature to him.
