Saturday Evening Movie Thread 06-23-2018 [Hosted By: TheJamesMadison]

It was Terrible, Except…

67. Bad Scenes Good Movies 01.jpg

I've stopped watching a movie part of the way through once. It was Sicko, the Michael Moore documentary about healthcare. It infuriated me to no end, not because it was an apologia for Cuban healthcare, but because it's manipulative technique was so obvious and forced that I just couldn't take it anymore. He'd start making a point with numbers, and then cut away to some sob story about a family who couldn't afford insurance. I found the technique itself infuriating, so I just stopped it (I paid no money to watch it, by the way).

However, with that said, I watch every new movie all the way through whether I love it or hate it. I don't need to explain the love it part, but why do I subject myself to a film if, through the opening minutes, I decide that it's garbage?

There are really two reasons. The first is that I always hold out hope that the movie will redeem itself. That it will build to some great ending that makes all of the mistakes over the previous 90 minutes or so completely worthwhile (this oh so rarely happens). The second is that even bad movies can have good elements.

You know what I'm talking about. That one scene or performance or design element that grabs you despite the awfulness of everything else around it. Yes, the movie as a whole is awful, except did you see that one part near the end?

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

67. Bad Scenes Good Movies 02.jpg

I've defended both The Motion Picture and The Search for Spock as misunderstood good movies, but that does not extend to William Shatner's directorial effort. The Final Frontier is bad. The story makes no sense (borrowing a plot line from The Animated Series of all places), with completely needless retconning, a total misuse of some beloved characters, and mostly questionable performances.

With that being said, there are three things in this movie that I genuinely and totally love.

First is the opening scene:

This does not feel like the start of a Star Trek movie. The slow motion, the desolation, and the color palate seem so off from what we expect from the series. And yet, as almost a short film unto itself, I love the feel of it. I buy the digger's isolation and desperation (and casting, he's got a great face). The weird and unexplained way that this new entity (Sybok) brings peace. It's really quick nice. The movie that follows doesn't really do anything good with it, though.

The second and third actually happen at once, but I consider them separate elements. The second would be McCoy's scene where he faces his pain.

I don't think I've seen DeForest Kelley give a better performance than in that scene where he has to relive the euthanization of his father. I don't know what Shatner said to him to get that performance, but it worked. Go back to the beginning of that clip to see the third thing that I absolutely love about The Final Frontier. You have to watch the whole thing, but pay attention to what goes on outside of the window. It's a surprisingly subtle effect that draws absolutely no attention to itself whatsoever, but the cluster of stars just gets steadily bigger as the scene draws on. It took me years to notice that (granted, I've only seen the movie all the way through perhaps twice), but once I did see it, I was a bit amazed. Through all of the cutting back and forth, and the fact that the effect was captured in camera with projection on a screen in the background as opposed to any sort of post-production compositing, it still just grows larger with every shot. There's a command in the handling of that effect that is absent in almost everything else in the film. It's obvious to me that a lot of thought went into that effect, and it pays off in its own way. I just wish the rest of the movie had that much thought.

Alexander

67. Bad Scenes Good Movies 03.jpg

Oliver Stone's foray into historical epic filmmaking on the heels of Gladiator and in the same year as Troy is…not good.

I actually saw this in theaters. I was excited. Oliver Stone is not a bad filmmaker, and the movie looks quite good, something that came through in the trailers very easily. However, no two actors seem to be performing like they are in the same movie. Colin Farrell looks like he's in a soap opera and Angelina Jolie acts like she's a monster in a horror movie. I think Val Kilmer gives the only good and grounded performance as Philip, Alexander's father. Even Anthony Hopkins seems to be half asleep as Ptolemy.

However, as implied by the movie's inclusion on this list, I do feel that the sequence that dramatizes the Battle of Gaugamela is quite well shot and assembled. The only clips I can find online are pixelated to all hell, so this will have to do:

There's a grand sweep to the sequence there that's missing from a lot of the mess of the movie. I genuinely find it quite engaging to watch on its own, separate from the rest of the film. But seriously, though, Val Kilmer is actually pretty good in his limited role.

The Lone Ranger

67. Bad Scenes Good Movies 04.jpg

Have you seen this movie?

Did you fall asleep during it? I almost did. Almost.

This was Disney making one of the largest miscalculations of the last twenty years, and it happened at about the same time that it also dropped the egg that was John Carter (addendum: that movie is awesome. Don't hate.). It was wildly expensive (actually less expensive than originally intended), had a huge star at the height of his power (Depp), was supposed to launch Armie Hammer to stardom, and was directed by the man who had brought Pirates of the Caribbean to the screen, Gore Verbinski. It was the kind of sure bet that Hollywood is always desperate for and further proof of William Goldman's adage, "Nobody knows anything. Not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what's going to work."

The move as a whole is largely self-serious and boring. It doesn't engage as it tries to build this weird mystique about itself that never settles while also using the US Army as bad guys in a super dense plot that made William Turner say, "Wow…that's overly complicated."

However, that being said, the final train fight and chase sequence is one of the most fun big budget sequences over the last couple of decades. It's the first time the familiar theme comes into the film. The action is big, brash, bold, and wildly inventive. Here's the opening to that sequence:

I don't own this movie because Disney has a very tight handle on the primary market for its films which keeps the price of its films high, but if I saw a copy for $5 or less, I'd pick it up just for that final sequence.

I'm not the only one here

Are there movies that you generally dislike but contain individual sequences or elements that you overall enjoy? I've listed a few up above, but mine isn't the only voice that matters.

Movies I Saw This Week:
Mother of Tears (Netflix Rating 2/5 | Quality Rating 1/4) Poster blurb: "Feels more like the work of a no-name than the man who made Suspiria. It's almost like Dario Argento forgot how to make a movie." [Netflix DVD]
The Taking of Pelham 123 (Netflix Rating 3/5 | Quality Rating 2/4) "Travolta was bad, and I don't like how Tony Scott makes movies in general, but it was almost entertaining enough." [Netflix DVD]
Backdraft (Netflix Rating 2/5 | Quality Rating 1.5/4) "Rote and tedious, but at least the fire looked nice." [Netflix DVD]
Suspiria (Netflix Rating 5/5 | Quality Rating 4/4) [Rewatch] "My second viewing of this jumped my opinion up a full star. Stylish descent into the logic of a nightmare." [Personal Collection]
The Four Feathers (Netflix Rating 4/5 | Quality Rating 3/4) "Handsome adventure story that holds up well enough. Could use some tighter focus, though." ["Library"]

See, you watched the wrong one. The original Pelham123, starring Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw, and released back in the 70s, was much better.

4 The only movie I ever walked out of the theater on was "Last Tango in Paris." I even made it through "Clockwork Orange," somehow.

5 I completely forget to mention The Black Dahlia.

The scene where they find the girl's body is great, and there's a sequence near the end that involves a staircase and a death that is classic de Palma in the best way.

7 What with the streaming services I tend to "walk out" of a lot of films now. If it doesn't get me quick or it wanders too far off topic, it's just too easy to stop watching and move on to the next film that catches my eye.

What OM said. The remake was... unnecessary. The original with Matthau was fantastic. Plus, though it was uncredited, NY in the 70's can be very interesting to watch and the original had all that.

"Rarely" is an overstatement. I doubt you could even cite one instance of it. But you hold out hope, anyway. It's cute, really.

26 Taking of Pelham 123 book was fun, and the first movie was at least watchable. The newer version, however, did not betray any awareness that the original book was completely unaware. Can't tie metanarratives to this extremely thin unpretentious story. Kind of reminds me of the remake of "Miracle on 34th Street." As soon as you try to take the narrative too seriously, it falls apart.

If you cut them some slack for making a SC-FI film based on what folks in the early 20th century (or maybe late 19th century?) thought was sci-fi, it kinda works. I like it too.

31 I give the new Jurassic movie a 'meh.'

Too much is recycled in my opinion, both in plot and shots. They keep casting a great hunter and each is terrible. Only the Aussie in the first movie is remarkable and memorable.

Jeff Goldblum gets another paycheck out of this.

The only payoff moments come with Owen and Blue. She still considers Owen a friend but knows he can't protect her as he promises. The other humans have shown her betrayal. So she runs off into the darkness.

71 I feel a compulsion to watch a movie I've chosen all the way to the end, even sitting there watching the final credits. There've been very few exceptions, even for stuff that's terrible.

I walked out on one movie in a theater--"The Gambler" staring James Caan. I understand addiction now, but at the time I did not. And the film failed to convey the absolute hold that addiction has over a person.
When I tried to watch it, it just didn't make any sense. Caan's character kept making such utterly stupid choices--despite absolutely knowing the danger he was putting himself in--that I just couldn't take what I thought was stupidity.
Well, it is stupidity. The film failed to make the compulsion real to the audience.
I've sent some films back to Netflix (back when I could afford a subscription) when they were only half (or less) watched. "Bad Lieutenant"--I really don't have time these days for vile people doing vile things. "Punch Drunk Love"--I got about 30 minutes into this "masterpiece" before deciding it was a senseless valentine to senselessness. And I've avoided Paul Thomas Anderson ever since. (At least Paul W.S. Anderson manages to be stupidly entertaining.) "The Last of Sheila"--I found it impossible to care about any of the characters.
And there I stand.

72 >>What with the streaming services I tend to "walk out" of a lot of films now. If it doesn't get me quick or it wanders too far off topic, it's just too easy to stop watching and move on to the next film that catches my eye.

I saw it in the theatre. Didn't really match the book, but it was so much fun that I bought it on DVD. Tried to lend it to one of my brothers, but he heard it was bad. Then he caught the tail end of it oin his travels and asked to borrow it.

Too bad Disney crapped on its marketing. It was better than the recent SW movies.

I liked Backdraft, too, especially the cut scenes. There's a future post for TJM: cut scenes good and cut scenes bad. The cut scenes from SW: Attack of the Clones actually gave a better sense of why the princess and the Jedi would have a relationship.

80 JOHN CARTER was good, not great. The issue is that it's certainly no worse than the Star Trek reboot that too many slobbered over yet it bombed with the critics and was basically abandoned by the studio.

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM gets points for continuing the idea that the dinosaurs are just examples of the destructive power of genetic engineering but loses most of them for a story that gets progressively stupider as it goes along.

124 John Carter isn't bad but it could have been so much better. First, Taylor K. was the wrong guy for the part. You needed someone who could play a Civil War vet who was done with humanity. A young Harrison Ford would have been the guy to play the character back in the day. (OT: Leading men need distinctive features. Perfect looking doesn't do it.)

Next they needed to scale back the film. Twenty years ago the film would have been a hit. Today, it was just another big CGI fest. It needed a tighter story with less CGI.

Finally, I don't think they ever had confidence in the material and it shows.

They objected to the humanizing of Confederates as opposed to portraying them as mere violent psychopaths who only took breaks from beating slaves long enough to go stomp on kittens.

I, on the other hand, couldn't stand the tedious melodrama and Robert Duvall's drawl. But, I did enjoy the attention to detail regarding sets, costumes, etc. as well as the cinematography--particularly during one of the final scenes depicting armies charging through the forest.

140 That clip on Gaugamela is entertaining filming, but also shows that Stone did not understand Alexander's military genius even one tiny bit. Few do. It shows Alexander planning the moves carefully, detailing the trap he would set - and yet that wasn't how a daring innovator like Alexander thinks and works at all. Alexander knew that he had the best people at their positions, and he knew they would hold their own. Then, as the two forces at Gaugemela faced each other, he made a move to create chaos, to do the unexpected, and to see what would happen. He had no real idea what would happen next; but he knew that he was the absolute master of Chaos in Action, that when things went out off the rails and everyone began reacting, HE would be able to adapt and take advantage of the new situation more quickly than anyone else on the battlefield. THAT was his genius, THAT was how he operated. He knew that his fly by the seat of his pants intuition was BETTER than all the planning done by all the military geniuses of his day. He didn't know what mistake the enemy was going to make - but he was sure that if he confounded them, they WOULD make a mistake, and he would spot it.

At Gaugemela, Alexander moved his cavalry unexpectedly to create some chaos. The other side was flustered, and made a mistake. Alexander saw the mistake instantly, exploited it immediately, and within a few minutes the massive Persian Army was scattered and Alexander was the new Ruler of Asia. That was his genius.

154 I don't really like Clint Eastwood as a director or actor. He was good in the spaghetti westerns that were directed by Sergio Leone only because his character was perfect for the part. You know. His character. Clint Eastwood the steely eyed, tense jawed movie star. As a director, I have never found him to be capable of nuance. He is just black and white. Always. Even when he uses good actors, they are reduced to some archetype that he is using to tell his story. Films like Unforgiven or Million Dollar Baby aren't bad. They just don't soar. There is a plodding nature to his vision.

That having been said, my favorite Clint Eastwood movie is Kelly's Heroes. It was not directed by Eastwood, but, once again, his limited acting range is perfect for his part. The one scene he messed up was at the end, when the German tank commander that blew open the bank for them was leaving with his take of the gold. He saluted Eastwood's character with the Roman salute, and Eastwood got all steely eyed and angry, like he's just pissed in his face. Of course, the German then realized his faux pas and changed it to the American army type salute. To which Eastwood responded in kind. His anger at the Nazi salute is ridiculous. It is an early 70's kind of political correctness of Nazi's bad, American's good. But, Eastwood and his fellow American thieves have already told the German that they don't know what the war is about and they're just going to get their share of booty. "Yeah, I'm a traitor and a thief, but that Nazi shit is just too evil!"

Kelly's Heroes had a great cast. Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Donald Sutherland, Harry Dean Stanton, Gavin McLeod, and more whose faces you would recognize.

It is a remarkable consistency that seems impossible.

If you don't like something in the first 7 minutes hit eject. You will never be wrong.

For instance everything that has Amy Adams in it is bad within the first 7 minutes.

198 As opposed to Starship Troopers, Dune is an honorable yet failed effort to do justice to the Frank Herbert novel. It had some great casting and truly excellent art direction. On top of that it had a very effective sound track.

Unfortunately, the sheer complexity of the book defeated the screenwriters and the film falls apart in the second half. One dubious achievement of the film is that is has two of the most unintentionally hilarious lines in cinematic history:

I am the Shadout Mapes, the housekeeper.

And the never to be topped:

Because he IS the Kiwsatz Hadarach!

Posted by: Anonymous White Male at June 23, 2018 08:18 PM (9BLnV)

Well, the Nazi's are the bad guys. Even Kelly recognizes that. He simply thinks the US army is incompetent.

The interesting thing about Kelly's Heroes is how the film walks the tightrope. They can't have the American actions be simply greed. But the characters can't be angels fighting for Mom and apple pie. So in the end, sure the characters are in it for the money but they blow a hole in the German line to help the army advance. In some ways it's a capitalist film.

220 The 2005 War of the Worlds movie was pretty mediocre (the bratty kids ruined it). However, there was one scene that stuck out to me and felt quite chilling.
It's the scene after the ferry gets tipped over and Tom Cruise and his kids swim to land. You can see in the background how the giant alien machines are methodically plucking people out of the water and zapping them like pests as they flee.
A follow up scene has a nice quote to sum up the situation; "This is not a war any more than there's a war
between men and maggots... This is an extermination."

To bad the super advanced aliens didn't know anything about bacteria...

231 Once Upon A Time In The West is one of the greatest westerns of all time and probably Henry Fonda's finest movie. He totally played out of character. One of the most evil villains put on film. Charles Bronson at his most Bronsonist (a GREAT thing) and Jason Robards wasn't shabby either. Claudia Cardinalle was a stunning beauty. Yes, I am a fanboy of OUTTITW.

I quote this in its entirety because I agree with all of that.

It's a funny thing, though, because it took me a while.

There's a girl, Italian, (Milan, not Jersey Shore) with whom I've been off and on for 20 years. Loves of each other's lives but we can't stand each other.

She tried to show me that movie one night when I hated her and it didn't work. Subsequently I realized that it's as good a western as has ever been made.

Having watched it and felt that it was appallingly bad, I couldn't help feel vindicated when the credits rolled and showed the director was Alan Smithee. David Lynch directed it, but was not allowed to use his own vision and did not get final cut approval. I felt the whole film suffered from the hey-we're-in-an-epic-so-let's-act-epically strategy.

290 A quick search sez that Ho-re-wood releases over 600 new movies per year.

I can't come close to watching each year's new releases, so I must be selective. That includes walking away on turkeys. I've dumped many a movie before the 10 minute mark. Quite a few of the new series as well. Westworld is awesome, btw.

The very first was Young Dr Frankenstein, in the theater. Becuz B&W. A point they avoided on their posters. I HATE B&W, probably cuz color TV came into our household quite late. It was a socio-economic thingy.

And yet, there was a brief part of it that made me very happy indeed, for a moment. 300 154 I don't really like Clint Eastwood as a director or actor.

People who love a book should rarely make a movie from it. They usually fail because they can't see what does or doesn't work on film.

Plus, Rand's books are pedantic screeds. I read The Fountainhead in HS and was skipping whole sections by the end because it was brutally repetitive. Compare The Fountainhead to Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Both are stories that want to espouse a philosophy. Heinlein's is lean, to the point, and has solid story. Rand rambles forever the group talk-athons.

339 A couple of night's ago there was a thread(I missed) where people were discussing.

"Infinity War" part 2 or whatever it'll be called.

And someone mentioned that maybe not all of the heroes will be restored to life.

I think that's essentially right but not quite on point.

Even Marvel has said this is the culmination of their first iteration of the Marvel Universe....So-

in order to get their SJW versions on board for future movies, I think-

this will be Marvel's version of DC's "Flashpoint".

"Flashpoint" is essentially the story of Flash traveling to the past to save his mother and that screws up everything. He's no longer the Flash, Superman is an near autistic weenie alien kept under gov't seal, etc, etc. The ripples of the destroyed time line make it impossible to restore the original timeline fully. DC used it to launch their new 52 craptastic reworking of their moneymaking characters.

My guess is that Thanos will demand a price for restoring the Universe or perhaps can't truly restore the Universe and the heroes will be replaced in this timeline by alternative SJW heroes.

Some will never have existed. Some will exist but as other (SJWoid) people. Some will exist but not as heroes. You can see the opportunities for poignancy - Old never was Captain America dying in an old folks home. The new heroes will remember adventures with the remaining heroes who have no idea what and who they are and if they can be trusted. ETC.

Captain Marvel will be the new leader.

Pretty sure that's the future of the series.

YMMV.

Amy Adams can be good in the right role - so good in "American Hustle," and appropriately over the top in "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day."

I have decided that Jessica Chastain is annoying, and it may be her personality that is off-putting. She was all "ra-ra feminism, strong powerful DC women!" describing her Miss Sloane character - and all I saw was a sociopath.

Exorcist III which was totally different from I and II is really good, I think. One scene in particular never fails to make my hair stand up. I read later that the studio forced a stupid exorcism scene because money. But George C SCOTT! is good in it.

That's not a bad bet. They've already said the Capt. Marvel is on path to be the leader. Whatever happens, anyone who is done with making these movies is going to die. Considering many of the ones most likely to be done are still alive, it is going to involve them making some sort of major sacrifice.

My prediction is this is the zenith for Marvel and super hero movies. After Avengers 4, it's going to decline because people won't want to start with new characters and SJWism is going to flow into the stories.

A funny thing about the movie -- the guy that wrote the book (renamed Gone To Texas) was a KKKster among other peccadilloes; Clint picked up the option on the book for $50k.

From wiki

Asa Earl Carter (September 4, 1925 - June 7, 1979) was a 1950s Ku Klux Klan leader, segregationist speech writer, and later western novelist. He co-wrote George Wallace's well-known pro-segregation line of 1963, "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever", and ran in the Democratic primary for governor of Alabama on a segregationist ticket.

Though not as bad as Darkman, or Grunt! the Wrestling Movie, or Richard Chamberlain's Allen Quartermain (the latter two of which were playing in adjacent rooms at the dollar theater back in the day--they were so bad that we just kept switching back and forth until we ran out of candy and left).

418 Good evening, all! I have been thoroughly enjoying all your snark and wit over the years, but too shy to jump in, I guess. Just wanted to mention the movie we watched last nite-- "The Last Movie Star" with Burt Reynolds - very sweet and poignant movie.

We especially enjoyed the parts where the older, 'mobility challenged' Burt is in the scenes with his younger, virile, self. (Deliverance; Smokey and the Bandit) Makes you realize how quickly time zips by, and how you look back at your life - either with regret and sadness, or with reconciliation and acceptance. Even though the film isn't specifically about him, I can't help but think that it mirrored his life somewhat, and that he probably realizes the irony. It was difficult to see him in such tough shape now, but a nice little movie over all.

I think that's it-have a good night, and God bless all of you!

From the mopey, Chi-com, Momma just can't even when fat boy bags a round eye hottie cartoon at the beginning, through the really wrinkly cast hyping the movie that **I'm about to watch so you obviously don't need to sell it to me, morons** and the Chi-comming of the Disney castle and then finally into the dull, boring, gurl-powr-boyz-druul, tedious, whiny, and most of all UNFUNNY main event, this movie wouldda stunk on ice.

Taken as a whole, its a hideous evocation of cruelty, nihilism, and despair. I sorta have a movie like that. Travolta and Sedgewick (Not partial to either actor,) in a pretty boring movie. But there is one scene where she shaves him and cuts his hair that is so intimate..way more than the wham-bam-ty mam' sex...or even the arty kind. I love that scene.

520 Meh on the Alexander scene. I haven't seen the movie, never wished to, and sure haven't changed my mind. What a beefless Alex. THAT's the Warlike Son of Zeus? NFW.

And he gets the battle wrong. Arrian quite clearly says that Alexander released his auxiliary cavalry first, a few at a time, drawing the Persians into a full on matchup with the Companion cavalry. Only after that was won did Alexander turn to Darius.

(BTW, it was the first known use of reserves in battle.)

I don't even LIKE Alexander, as a man. But after years of resisting, I've had to rank him #1, over even Hannibal and Nelson.

Just that. Actors do a basically weird thing. They get taken over by a character, and can actually play-act that, so well that you are convinced. To be really good at that is rare. To be so very good at it, and to scintillate on camera, is even rarer. So if you have been blessed with all of that, just go to work and do it, and count your blessings. No one cares what you think about the President.

Take a cue from one of the very best: Gary Oldman. Doesn't talk much outside the work, does he? Can't tell what his politics are, can you? Are you better than him? No, you're not. So shut up.

552 The Lone Ranger ... a movie I never saw, but the horrible, thudding disaster of it set off some discussions among the writer-ilk, about how we would go about re-launching the franchise if the power were ever given to us to do so.
My own suggestion - rack it back 40 years, lose the mask and the silver bullets, and make it a historical set during the time of the Republic of Texas -- and make it aimed at tween-teen boys inspired me no end.
Two collections of classic Western adventures later -- (but with the identifiable other bits carefully sand-papered off...)

He also talked about America, and how did we get here. Which I think everyday. So the difference is stark between the screechers and the sane.

556 Almost walked out of the heap of crap reboot Star Trek Into Darkness. The arrogance of the movie makers to take the greatest Star Trek movie ever and remake with a reversed death role? The original had years to build the Kirk-Spock friendship so when Spock dies (spoiler) happened it meant something. What a crap fest.

Saw Incredibles 2 and it was good but no where close to the first. The SJW theme kept getting in the way of great music, animation, and action. Good lord, every character that was in a power position was a woman. Elastagirl, Violet, the villain, and even the amabassador were the ones in power. The first had a balance that every character had a chance to shine.

It wasn't all bad although...Jack-Jack vs. the racoon was hilarious...Edna Mole steals the movie...and there was a fight scene between ElastaGirl and the main villain that was mind blowingly great. It did need more Dash in it and Frozone.

How about a good UESN vs. Romulan war? Primitive nukes and all. That would be a good way to introduce Vulcans, Andorians and Tellerites and make a UFP setup seem realistic.
Pacifist UESN vs warlike Romulans would be a near run thing at the beginning. Desperate former rival races unite to fight the common enemy that threatens to crush them all. Then the matter-antimatter vessels of the UESN would crush the fusion Romulans in the end.
Or something.

568 Are there movies that you generally dislike but contain individual sequences or elements that you overall enjoy?

Upon first viewing, I didn't like 'Boondock Saints II' (The original 'Boondock Saints' is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time). But upon repeat viewings, I liked it more and more. It's not up there with the original for me, but I can say that I genuinely like the movie and was hoping the last scene was setting up an eventual 'Boondock Saints III'.

That said, it did NOT seem to be very popular with many others.

But the infamous Rocco speech scene I think even fans critical of the movie could think was awesome. An awesome, awesome defense of 'toxic masculinity' that is simply... awesome.

Dr. Mrs. T. and I did "walk out of" a couple of movies on DVD. We bailed on Pearl Harbor after the attack was over and we realized that godawful movie was only HALFWAY OVER and we couldn't hope for Admiral Yamamoto to save us anymore.

The other one was Cameron's Avatar, which we gave up on about two-thirds of the way through because we both knew exactly what was going to happen and didn't really want to watch the cast going through the motions. Maybe it was better on the big screen.

A-freaking-men to this. I actually liked the movie, but those f-cking whiney-ass kids pissed me the hell off in every.freaking.scene.they.were.in.

I have watched the full movie once, hating the kids and hoping they'd die the entire time. Then tried to watch it again some time later when it was on somewhere and just couldn't. Because those annoying freaking brats.

575 39 Anyone see the new JP movie? Comments?

Mrs IMG and I just returned from viewing it (big screen, XD sound, barcalounger seating).

1. We liked Chris Pratt and his character.
2. There's a KAF type character that we did not care for. Fortunately, she's quite minor to the story.
3. Her counterpart character is a soy boy. Also very minor. Nuff said about that.
4. Overall enjoyable

Nit picking points:

1. Mercs never bring enough gun in the movies in this series, which makes no sense. They know they are going after predators the size of elephants. Those guys are supposed to be former Army and USMC. so they'd look at dino's as tanks and bring the HEAT and armor piercing rifle/machine gun ammo.
2. Dino's aren't tanks. More like APCs. Very much killable by guys on foot with proper weapons.
3. I don't buy some of the big dino's physics: 1 ton +, walk/run/jump on two legs. That's a lot of ground pressure and some stuff in this movies that should break from that doesn't. Dunno if that's ignorance or license to "tell a good story"

Overall, we liked it and would see again.

576 #411 "Has there ever been a SECOND sequel that was not a complete waste of time?"

I can only think of one: Toy Story 3. I was dubious going in but it totally won me over. I am dubious that there is going to be a Toy Story 4... 3 was such a great way to end the series, and I don't know where they will go with it; but maybe 4 will win me over too.

Note, the third James Bond movie, Goldfinger was good, but I'm not sure that counts as a sequel of a sequel.

#421 I also liked Edge of Tomorrow, but I prefer the title of the book it was based on: "All You Need Is Kill"

577 "Leaving Las Vegas" with the execrable Nicholas Cage was really awful, unredeemed by the presence of Elizabeth Shue , shown peeing on a toilet.

579 >>>The second is that even bad movies can have good elements.

This is also true of parties and other life events. And is generally true of life.

580 One day, I will die, and when I am approaching that final curtain, I can face my maker and say "I did not waste 2 hours of my life watching 'Taxi' with Queen Latifa and Jimmy Fallon."

You are right about the last 30 minutes of "The Lone Ranger;" they are fun. However, it's a real slog to get there; it takes 45 minutes just to get to the plot.

Go to YouTube and listen to a radio episode of "Gunsmoke," with William Conrad as Marshall Dillion. The writing and acting are flawless, and you are done in 30 minutes.

581 I walked out on Koyaanisqatsi in the 80s. No plot, just fast moving images of nature and what industrial man had built. Not recommended for epileptics, that's for sure.

582 I thought the new comedy "Tag" was a dud, but the first time they used the slo-mo effect to show Jeremy Renner avoiding a tag grabbed me. The novelty, and the movie in toto, quickly wore thin.

583 I think of "The Final Frontier" as a buddy movie, and less so as a Star Trek movie. I rather enjoyed it.

584 The Lone Ranger johnny Depps version of Tonto makes him look like someone on Halloween with a stuffed Bird on his head and never forget the fact when they made that other movie LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER the movie maker got a court order preventing the Original Lone Ranger(Clayton Moore)from wearing his mask the results the movie Bombed

585 I enjoyed "Alexander", especially the "Final Cut" version that restored the original design of the movie. I agree that Val Kilmer is quite good as Philip, while the other cast members are perfectly viable. My biggest problem with Farrell is that he doesn't believeably "age". By the end, I suspect Alexander was psychologically "tired", even if emotionally still "dreaming".

Is the quality of a movie mostly dependent upon its time and place in a culture? I'm thinking here of "Four Feathers" (1939). I consider this an outstanding film, but very much of its era. Does that reduce its quality?

586 I may be late to the comments, but I enjoyed Star Trek The Final Frontier. Best scene was Kirk telling Sybock that pain makes us who we are: "I need my pain!" . . . I don't think William Shatner could see it, (or maybe he could) but Sybock was a poor imitation of Christ who freely gives forgiveness and grace to those that come to him.
Funny scene: Scotty, " I know this ship like the back of my hand." Womp!

587 I agree with you on STV, but liked the camping scenes too. True, they were a bit corny yet still made me chuckle. The rest of the movie sucked big time. One more thing about the opening, the book explains that the alien digging holes in the desert had just lost his family and had gone a bit mad as a result (hence the hopeless search for water). I thought the movie could have done a better job referring to that.

I haven't seen the other 2 movies and since you posted the best bits, I guess I don't have to now.

588 Literally, the last "first run" movie I saw in a theater was "Dune" in 1984. (I added that because I might have went to see "The Wall" or "Rocky Horror" at the Midnight Movies after this).

It was so terrible I vowed to never pay to see another movie again. Never had HBO or Skinemax. Never have Netflixed or Hulued. They show up on free TV eventually.

34 yrs and counting...
